I review these videos to try to catch mistakes, but the amount of time that I could spend QC'ing these videos takes way more time than I have. The unfortunate part of about doing these trips in wintertime is the short daylight times. I will say that this will be my last major road trip done in wintertime for a while. Oh, thank you! I chose this trip only because I had to go to Seattle for business, and I wound up having a free day that Friday (1/21) to fly back to DC, but I decided to skip the flight and get a rental car to drive back instead. Except for having issues with my windshield wiper fluid freezing in Minneapolis and having to deal with a dirty windshield for much of the rest of the trip, it went rather well.

      The camera that I have has a temperature sensor, but I could never get it to work inside a car (unless I have the sensor inside the car, which would be pointless), so I just started tracking the temperature readouts from the display above the steering wheel, about every 15-30 minutes. The temperatures were changing rapidly up and down while I was driving through the Rockies, too.

      I will be uploading them next, starting in about 2-3 weeks for the first part. The routing of this is very different from my DC-WA trip. I stayed in the northern most states, which was interesting because of being January. It was downright frigid in eastern North Dakota and into Minnesota and Wisconsin. The temperatures were so cold that the windshield wiper fluid froze, and I had no way to clear the windshield during the drive while driving through Wisconsin. I had to stop several times, sometimes along the freeway, to clean the windshield. Not fun.

    5:49:02 If you’re like me I bet it felt super awesome to walk outside into air this cold and exhale super thick clouds from your mouth. Coldest I’ve ever experienced is -4°F (-20°C) just a week ago Saturday morning and when I went outside it felt so nice after a warm and boring winter that I didn’t want to go back inside until the temperature went above zero. It was awesome to watch my hands steaming so much, my mouth producing such thick clouds, the air shaking so violently with the window cracked open, and the interesting frost formations forming on my window when I cracked the window open

    • @unclecoolie
      @unclecoolie  ปีที่แล้ว

      That was the coldest since January 1994 when It got to -32F at my house. We had a mercury thermometer showing that at our house in West Virginia. The bank in town officially registered the temperature as -28F. One thing I've noticed is that, as the temperature drops further below 0F, it doesn't really feel any colder, but the amount of steam emanating from your body increases. That morning in 1994, I remember a big blast of steam when I opened the front door.

    I took a very similar trip in 2019, mere months before the pandemic hit. Seattle to Cleveland (then on to Ottawa, CA) then back. It's crazy seeing snippets of road and remembering exactly what we were talking about or what happened as we drove past there. It's like reliving the entire trip in my memory.
    I remember seeing Keechelus lake for the first time, nestled deep within the Cascade range. Traveling for what felt like an eternity through the mist fading in and out, separating the green PNW from frontiers unseen. Coming down off the cascades, there's small hill on the eastern foothills (right around 19:24) where you can look back and see picturesque Klondike peaks with beauty unmatched, snow-capped triangular mountains just traversed, and the frisson that you feel imagining pioneers on that hill hundreds of years ago facing down the final barrier between them and the coast.
    The eastern WA basin was long and boring, punctuated by the suddenness of Spokane and the Coeur d'Alene valley. I remember the wonder of Lookout pass and the feeling of being in deep country, staring out into the endless, thick and uninhabited coniferous treeline. "We're not in the PNW anymore", I remember thinking. Then that one stretch of downwards slope just outside of Missoula where a freak hail storm rolled in and hail chunks the size of golf balls smashed our car up really well, followed by rolling snowstorms that almost took us out of commission. We kept trucking in our car at 15MPH staring down incessant flurries for hours until night fell and we finally crawled into Billings.
    I remember that one endless discussion we we had as we crossed the endless badlands throughout ND. The fields were endlessly flat and snowed over and the sea of rolling badlands eventually gave way to the Great American Prarie. Then, suddenly, halfway through Minnesota, the whole scenery changed and it felt as if we had swapped over from West coast to East coast. The Great Plains disappeared behind us, replaced by deciduous forest, treelines, and a more populous settlements. Minneapolis truly felt frozen as we stayed overnight, there somehow was a violent atmosphere in the air almost as cold as the crusted salt on the roads. Little did we know that in less than a year, the city would be burning.
    As we descended through Wisconsin, a looming behemoth towered before us. As we approached, it felt like time slowed down. The highways went from rural and uncluttered to passing through peripheral industrial zones, clogged with cars and construction. I felt a low, constant droning in my head as we approached. An ominous, constant tone, only brought louder and louder as we entered easternmost Chicago. The craziness ramped up to 11 and what followed was 3 hours of crossing Chicago's inner core at rush hour reduced to a high-pitched blur. The toll lanes, the crushing traffic, the beaters cutting up in the freeway at 90 MPH. I have a memory of staring at an automated toll booth as a line of cars behind me laid on their horns. Before me was a basket. A basket?! I grabbed a fistful of anything we had in the center console and tossed it at the basket - pennies, nickels, buttons, a paperclip and some desert mints, half of which fell all over the asphalt. Mercifully, the gate opened.
    After the nightmare of Chicago passed, we were at a rest stop just outside of Gary, Indiana. Night had fallen and I remember hearing gunshots off the freeway some distance. I was shaking, having white-knuckled the steering wheel for the past hour. I took a sip of water, hacked it back up over a trashcan and let my friend drive the rest of the way that night. I slept comfortably in the passenger seat as we drove through the most dangerous city in America.
    Approaching Cleveland felt like we were firmly in the East coast. Cleveland itself felt unremarkable, a modernizing rust belt city with wide flat East-Coast style boulevards. Snow burdened the bare deciduous trees as we drove slowly through the city and stopped at a Walmart. We tread carefully, as if foreigners in our own country.
    Once we passed Ohio we had a quick Jaunt through Erie - the highway passing through deflowered forest littered with some trash and inhabitation, state patrol cars staking out in the median - then it was onwards into the great state of New York. An old-school, unionized, blue-collar feeling of decades past descended on us as we drove through Upstate. There was something fundamentally older than all of us were used to as we drove through Buffalo, Rochester, then Syracuse, medium-sized cities existing at the very edge of the peripheral orbit of the great Empire City unseen.
    Once we turned north from Syracuse, we penetrated into an immensely rural void, albeit one unfamiliar to us from back home. Eastern forests, a cold emptiness barely visible from the confines of the occasionally-lit interstate. We passed some tiny localities and arrived to the frozen border. From there, it was an hour of driving between two towering treelines before we arrived to Canada's capital.
    When we turned around and did the trip again in reverse, everything felt three times less intense, time went by three times as fast, and there was no conversation in the car. It was like rewinding a tape at speed, quickly replaying all the moments from our heroic trek in fast-forward, seeing first Cleveland pass, then the deflowered highway, through and past the Chicago hellscape, racing sundown through Wisconsin back into Minneapolis. Leaving Minnesota, penetrating the Great Plains once more, passing through endless badlands as the growing anticipation of returning home filled our hearts. We left the flats for the immensity of Montana, then methodically conquered the Rockies, descending through the WA basin as night fell. We drove through the darkened Klondike peaks once more as sleet pounded the road, and just like that we were back home, in the western WA basin. It all felt like one big dream.

      I was a bit worried about taking this trip when I booked it less than two weeks prior, mainly due to the unpredictable weather, especially in the upper midwest and Rockies. The only hiccup was losing my windshield wiper fluid from the Minneapolis until the end of the trip. I was also glad that I didn't have to have cash for toll plazas on this trip. What you described about the crime in some of the cities, that's why I avoided driving through downtown in cities, such as Minneapolis and Chicago. Why didn't you take a different route to go back to Washington?

    I did this trip only in the other direction and in August. I had my two elderly dogs with me so we stopped much more frequently. After blasting my way up to Chicago to visit an old friend, I took the rest of the way a little more leisurely. I took I-90 in South Dakota and visited Sioux Falls then stopped to see the Minuteman Sites, the Badlands and Mount Rushmore. After that, I checked out Deadwood and Devil's Tower before heading to Yellowstone through Cody, WY. And finally rejoining I-90 in Bozeman, MT and continueing West. August is a great time to do this trip. It's light out so late that far north and makes the driving very enjoyable. As well, stopping in the national parks really changes the experience. Having lived so long on the East Coast, I didn't have an appreciation for the wonders of the national parks. Anyhow, thinks for sharing your trip.

    A tougher winter trip for parts of this journey. Like all of the vids, I am amazed at the lack of pit stops to see historical stuff. Or maybe those excursions are cut out. The temptation to make the trip twice as long must be great.

      Too often when I do long road trips like this I don't have much time to do them, so I have to maximize distance over sight-seeing. Sometimes, I can get some extra time for points of interest stops and to avoid only taking interstates. One such trip is my trip from last year when I drove to Mt Washington. You finally uploaded another long Road Trip. Congratulations! I haven't seen it yet but looks to be interesting because I've always wanted to see what the Northern States looked like in the Winter.
    It looks like there's some sections in the darkness which I know you try to avoid but I understand that it's difficult to do an all-daylight trip in the winter on a strict time schedule, especially up there where the days are even shorter. However, only one of them is in the Mountain West and it looks like you were able to get most of the more scenic Mountain passes in the daytime. Also thanks for covering I-94 Eastbound. The westbound trip was covered by Barbiepoledancer back in 2013 but she decided to go on I-90 when heading back east. All in all, great video and hope to check it out (and post my album list) in the coming days :)
    EDIT: After watching the entire video, it was quite the adventure. Loved getting to see the scenery of the Rockies and Appalachians covered with snow as well other scenic landmarks such as Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It was also nice to get a good idea of which areas regularly get snow in the winter since this was filmed in the middle of January. The windshield didn't bother me too much as a viewer. It was also nice to take a look at the progress of Seattle's LINK Light Rail extension and see some of the DC Metro in action. Also DC proper leading up to the WH area seemed to be a very exciting area to hang out. Only bummer was that most of the scenery of Montana (particularly the transition from Rockies to Plains east of Butte) wasn't recorded in the video due to being driven during the night. Great work! Some good trip ideas would be all of I-10 or the entire Trans-Canada Highway (in the summer, of course).

    • @unclecoolie
      @unclecoolie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! The biggest downfall with driving in the wintertime is the short days. I had some other issues with this trip, such as having the windshield wiper fluid freeze when I stayed in the Minneapolis area, which made keeping the windshield clean a major problem. So, I don't think I'll be doing any northern road trips in the wintertime anytime in the near future. My next road trip will likely be through the warmer southern states.

    Could you upload the final stretch from Minnesota to Washington DC please at normal speed so I can complete my trip.
    You totally rock but trips at high speed are useless if your on an excercise bike.

      I will eventually. I've been fortunate enough to have been able to do more road trips this year, including an awesome one that I just finished yesterday. I can't wait until I upload that video, and then I'll upload the rest of this trip in real time.

    Mi 239 in Berrien County???? Maybe 139? And Indiana 39 ?!?!? Where are these roads? They aren't showing up on Google maps! Oh, wait... I sneezed when crossing into Michigan, so I missed the immediate turn onto 239, then Ind 39. Really close-up view and fine print - only drove c. 2 miles on I94. My bad!

    do you have a cross country video doing the southern route? This one was awesome, and I've always wanted to do this, and the southern route. I've driven cross country on I80 several time because it was the quickest to get to family. The Northern and Southern routes would be for pleasure, someday.

    You took the I94 all the way up to New Buffalo MI before turning back to the I80/90. This is when there was no GPS info so I am guessing that is the reason..?

    • @unclecoolie
      @unclecoolie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The GPS data just happened to drop out for that period of time. I deliberately drove into Michigan because I had never been to Michigan before. I was using navigation on my phone for this trip. Normally, I try to get rental cars that have navigation already.

    How about a trip on I-80 from San Francisco to New York.

    • @unclecoolie
      @unclecoolie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have I-80 covered from western Nebraska to Illinois already, and, especially in Nebraska, if wasn't particularly interesting. So, if I do another cross-country road trip, I'll likely choose I-90 or I-70, or even I-40 or I-10 first.
