Also shout out to the cop who responded to the call. As soon as he saw them he immediately knew what was actually happening and informed the mother of the call that was made. Couple things this story didn't mention. The man who called the police was their neighbor. In the 911 call you can hear him say there's a "strange little woman" putting something on the trees. Mind you this is a grown man, if he was that concerned why didn't he just go outside?
The young girl's mother happens to walk up when the police arrive, and as soon as the officer explains to the mother she knows exactly who called because this is not the first time they've had problems with this person.

But the initial police call just exposes how bias works. A little black girl is killing insects that destroy the trees in the neighborhood. But instead of being seen as a child, she is seen as a very short adult woman. He notices that she is getting close to the trees (in order to catch the insects). What was she was doing? Was she some kind of a tree terrorist.?!! Or a tree pervert sexually assaulting the trees on a public street!!?? Whatever is was, it MUST be something wrong!!! In fact, so wrong that the police needed to be called right away! Even though her mother was following the child a half block behind her!
This is too often how black people are perceived by white people. I'm sure the caller would swear that there wasn't a racist bone in his body. He was just concerned, thats all. But he would not have been "concerned" at all if it was a little white 9-year old girl was doing the exact same science project. This is how white bias against black people works. They see a completely different reality when a black person is involved.

A few minutes later security came and asked us if we were looking inside cars and trying to open them (we were 9 and 6 years old). I’ll never forget how unfair it felt to be accused of something when all we did is stand by a door. Anyways my dog peed and we started walking down the neighborhood more and a woman got out of the driver side of that car and called me a dirty nword for ‘letting my dog pee on her car’. I had to explain to her that he peed on the grass and that there’s nothing wet on her car. I don’t even allow my dog to pee on peoples trash cans. So why would I let him pee on cars?? There really is a serious problem in our country when grown adults keep calling the police on children ... weeks ago I heard hammering outside my door, I looked out and a young boy was hammering into one of my trees ... I walked outside and asked what he was doing, he holds up a piece of notebook paper that said "Help me find my cat" .... he had his name and number and an "actual" photo of his kitty ... he lived with his grandmother and she called everywhere but he was no where ... the sadness in his little face just broke my heart, I looked through the 5 pictures he had, chose one and asked him to wait, I scanned the photo and printed pages with the number at the bottom to be ripped off, I told him to go back and switch all the ones he had already done and get his pictures back, I kept one poster and printed a few to take with me while I was in public areas, also posted to our city's Facebook lost/found pets and shared ... took me maybe an hour of my time, but the best news was when I came across a post a few weeks later, the little boy was smiling as he cradled his kitty ... I wish everyone reacted first with kindness and not the police ... let's keep focusing on the amazing people we have and teach our children to strive for greatness ....
