Thank you for talking about this. I have love for my Mom but she is toxic and like you, I have tried for years to develop and have a relationship with little success. I was molested during my childhood so much so that I don’t remember having one. I did face my molester. I talked with my Grandmother a lot and she was very honest with me about many situations and helped me develop into who I am today. I have risen above the odds and become a Dr. in Education. I’ve stopped trying to make excuses for her behavior or generational curses and live my life. I choose to be happy and not victimized to that curse of dependence.

Growing up with a mother with Schizophrenia was one of the most difficult experiences of my life. I’m almost 50 and it isn’t as painful and traumatic as it was when I was younger but I still carry the burden. When I’ve shared this (the few times) with people, it’s hard for them to hear, let alone understand the breakdown or dysfunction of one of the most important relationships in a woman’s life-the mother-daughter relationship. I often times think back searching for a time when I’ve felt a bond or closeness with my mother and sad to say, I can’t recall not one. SMH. When I became an adult, I had to sever any and all communication and interaction with her in an effort to hold onto that last little shred of sanity and self esteem that I had left. Some friends and family members have criticized and judged me for doing so. I don’t give hoot. I tell them “That’s between me and God and no one else” and that shuts it right on down. But by the grace was I able to make it through what felt like living everyday in sheer hell. God kept me and I’m 💯 certain of it. Still does. I hesitated to write this but I’m glad I did. Sis, God bless you for being open, honest, and strong enough to stand and speak your truth and provide a platform for others to do the same. 💜 🙏 💪

period! God is your only judge .. i’m so proud of you babe .. it hurts .. having a mother that isn’t mothering
when I was a child growing up with my mother at one point i considered suicide .. i couldn’t understand why my life was so horrible and i felt death would be easier than living with her .. but God

@@KiKiCarr I considered ending it many times. It was rough. Ooh and the stigma and shame surrounding mental illness not to mention parental mental illness in the black community is extremely problematic.

Sounds like generational trauma going on. I see it everyday in my work with trauma survivors. The raising of a child is very different from giving life and that doesn’t make someone a parent. We do carry those sometimes hidden scars that actually continue to show up in how we interact with others. Know that you are loved and that starts with you.

people don’t like talking about it, but there are toxic mothers out there and toxic fathers, a lot of times we don’t wanna talk about it or people don’t wanna hear it because they wanna live in a fantasy world, but the end of the day it needs to be talked about, not everybody was raised up in a loving relationship with their mother, And I’m praying for you and believing God for that generation curse to be broken, you are walking in the broken this other generation curse because you refuse to pass that on, and you don’t have to you already know.😍👩🏾‍🦲🥰

You are so right. It’s almost blasphemy to speak ill of a parent no matter how vile they are. All family members aren’t necessarily healthy to our wellbeing. Don’t let anyone guilt you into, “but that’s your family .”
