I know quite a few kids who came back at Christmas from college and their coaches told them the same thing. Then they had more time to develop the change up they were lacking. On my son’s high school team he is the only pitcher who has a change up out of twelve pitchers. It makes sense especially for younger pitchers.
@@youfound_natman5546 I doubt it. Slider is his main strikeout pitch. In the 2020 season he threw his slider 39.9% of the time whereas he threw his curve 18.8% of the time
I’m 16 and I’ve spent almost a year trying to figure out the difference between the two pitches, and never before have I heard (paraphrasing) “their the same with a different angle”. Thank you so much for this video. This video finally showed me the difference and how throw both 🙏
Whatever works for you. I threw a slurve and slider. All about preference and how effective you are with particular pitches. If I threw a curveball, it would hang more often than not, and people could go yard. So I never used it in a game. And for my change up, I would just throw a low two seamer. My fastball was hot and has break so that was great to lean on.
Great video, as usual, but I do not see why you should not throw BOTH a curve ball AND a slider. I have a very good curve ball, but I am also working on a slider, which looks pretty good at times. As a hitter, what bothers me the most is a pitcher who can mix up lots of pitches. So if I have a very good curve ball, and a pretty good slider, why shouldn't I be throwing both, especially to the bigger guys with the big, fast swings who seem to always be looking for a fastball to crush? It seems to me that a mediocre to good 3rd or 4th pitch, thrown not too often, can still be very effective in keeping hitters off balance. But it also seems to me that most major leaguers do choose between a curve ball and a slider, so I am wide open to the idea that you are right, I just can't figure out why you would be right.
I think he was just give an anecdote about his specific experience, rather than giving you advice that you need to implement now. I guess you’re 3 years older so maybe you’ve forgotten all about watching this video, but hopefully you’ve been using both throws in your games and didn’t abandon one of them.
Thanks ive been getting thrown off cus announcers always say "breaking ball" i was trying to find out what was a curve and slider, i guess they're both breaking pitches. Nice easy vid
I think that a curve is better since, realistically speaking, vertical breaking movement (Curve, sinker, etc) is better than horizontal movement (Slider, cutter, etc.) since the bat is moving on a horizontal plane and the batter cant really control vertical movement in their bat swing.
Playing ball I threw both of them just complete different arm slots. I think having both in your arsenal is a good thing. I also threw a fork ball and a split finger fastball and a 2 seam fastball. Granted most of them moved a lot being a lefty.
The 12/6 curveball your describe. Isn't that more of a sinker, or drop ball? I always thought the slider broke inward on a right handed batter, and the curveball breaks outside on a right handed batter. I guess i was wrong.
how much pressure on the baseball should you have as in should you hold the ball tight or loose with the slider? If tight which finger should have the most pressure on it
I'd actually throw a tight grip slider that would be about 8 mph slower than my fastball, a tight grip curve that would be about 12-15 mph slower than my fastball, and then a big arching loose grip slow curve that would be about 25 mph slower than my fastball. On my slider, I would move my middle finger a little bit off the seam and have my index finger more on the seam. But with that being said, everyone has their own feel. Everyone's hand size is different. So something that works great for me, may not work for you. The best approach is to keep trying out new grips yourself.
I was always a proponent of having a small array of multiple pitches.4 seam 2 seam fastballs.a hard low curveball.a slower 10-4 chest high curve that broke sharp to keep the hitter honest. And my best pitch a nasty slider thrown just like this guy showed.I usually didnt strike out alot but I mixed it up and kept the hitters off balance.Hitting is timing.throw off their timing and when they do hit it, its not on the screws. this keeps your fielders happy lol
I grip my slider like the way you do, but I throw it more like a fastball, and it has a sharp break kinda to the side. I’m tempted to trash the cutter I throw and keep the slider, and add a knuckleball
I no nothing about how and what baseball players throw and when.. I'm new to your site I hope you touch on the approaches used to get batters out. It's like anything else the more you learn about something of interest the more focused you are. I know the basics of baseball as I have paid for several Blue Jays nose bleed seats in the past. You probably just teach pitching but you may want to look at teaching baseball strategy
At 66 years of age and mainly focused on ice hockey... the Blue Jays have brought profound interest to many Canadians who otherwise never would have tweaked their interest. We now have baseball programs galore and way more opportunities for the young at heart... learning the rules and strategies of the game makes it so much more enjoyable.
I thought that most pitchers (Steve Carlton for example) throw the slider with a fixed or hooked wrist, while the curve is thrown with a snap of the wrist.
He mentioned the doorknob effect. Picture a closed door. The act of turning the knob is the slider just before release. Now stand to the side of the door with it open so that you are at a 90 degree angle to it. Work the doorknob from that angle and now you have the hand action on the curve right before release.
Philosophy vs statistics , many pitching greats throw both so choosing one seems like a practical philosophy but looking at stats pitchers with more choices tend to last longer and are successful. So having a great slider doesn't mean having a good curve isn't useful. Another old philosophy is 4 seam is better than 2 seam but that doesn't statistically matter.
True lol. That said, anyone would kill to be drafted by an MLB club good or bad. The difference between a good MLB club and a bad one is often management/front office not necessarily talent.
If a 2 seam fastball has more movement then a 4 seam? Then why would you throw your curve as a 4 seam? Thank you for your videos. I enjoy them. Keep them coming.
I throw 4 seam, 2 seam, 12-6 Curve, Slider, and changeup. I throw the slider 2 ways sometimes I throw it like a frisbee and other I throw it like a curve it has little sideways movement and breaks down late. I throw my 4 seam 85 and 2 seam 82-83 my curve ball is at 64 and slider is at 80 my change is 70.
Wow, so the Padres player development program is a joke. No wonder they have sucked for decades. Having a curve and a slider is a huge advantage. When you throw both, your curve makes your slider look much more like your fastball. Then again, so many MLB pitcher don't actually pitch, they throw. They have a 100 mph fastball and live off of that. So when the Paders tell them to pick either a slider or curve, it's because both of their pitches suck.
Yeah and how long was your career for having the number one pitches in the organization? Good answer. Have never heard your name with the greats. Take a seat
YouGoPro just too many like you going around offering 'expert' advice when really you're just a washed up ball player who was good from far but far from good.
You need a new hobby because this trolling your doing is pretty bad. If YOU haven't played pro ball just your opinion or questioning an actual pro players career is invalid.

Half the starters and Major League Baseball have both the curveball and a slider. How is everybody getting rid of one of the two helpful to a team?
id like to see you pitch some of these live in action against a batter to get a better and more full understanding of the mechanics
Ditch slider or curveball? Imagine the Padres telling Kershaw that.
So true
I think he’d choose curve
Fifty-one seasons of Padre baseball, zero championships. Screw their pitching philosophy. Throw both of them.

Great stuff. I shared to my 14 years old who works his slider everyday...he mostly used 4 seam and change up and a cutter
NICE!
Im glad your described them both bc being a lefty i had a really good slider i always called a curve. Had a pitch that curved away too threw hard

Why did they make you choose 1 ot the other? Why not both?
Try spamming the left arrow key when it starts.
Did you know Jared Wells? He also pitched for the padres. He’s one of my son’s select ball coaches in Angleton, Tx.

Can we see a video on slurve vs. curveball
Thanks ive been getting thrown off cus announcers always say "breaking ball" i was trying to find out what was a curve and slider, i guess they're both breaking pitches. Nice easy vid
Can we see a video on the splitter vs the change up or splitter vs cutter
Got splitter vs fork in next video!
YouGoPro ok thank you

Da Boss as a hiter a difrent arm slot tips pitches atleast that is what i obzerve
Nathan and The Water it all depends on how you approach each pitch. I kept the same arm slot for every pitch.
@@daboss3505 you just said you used a completely different arm slot? And now your saying it was the exact same? So which one is it? Your funny. 😉
"I threw both of them just complete different arm slots" and "I kept the same arm slot for every pitch". Huh?

Two very similar pitches you can disguise when throwing. Why not throw both?
Great video man! I have been trying to learn the grip of a slider and this video really helped!
Have you ever sanded the ball or thrown a pitch with vasoline or pinetar in The MLB or AA or AAA / dose it help
U always explaine but never show u should show us the pitch it would definitely help me a lot more
Dam pros wanna keep it to themselves.
Another great video. It just seems that more variety keeps the batter guessing more!
This is what a true baseball player is. I remembered him. He had a slurve.
Never heard of him.
i can throw a nasty slider but my arm is kinda going sideways when i release it
I can also throw a slider I play baseball and hockey
Never heard of him lol

Great explanation!
Is a 1 seam fastball usually a slider
I thought that most pitchers (Steve Carlton for example) throw the slider with a fixed or hooked wrist, while the curve is thrown with a snap of the wrist.

My Arsenal is slider is my best pitch followed by slurve change up sinker/2 seam curve 4 seam/cutter
Hi! Nice video as always. What are your thoughts on the crossfire delivery for sidearmers?
Im a major leager now but i cant pitch some curve and slider
Don't think anyone has told Scherzer, Verlander, Buehler, or Kershaw to choose one breaking ball
If you cant chose, use the slurve ;)
Thanks Mr.Maden
Excellent, you should be coaching in college or in the minors or the majors.
1:27 "Now you've heard of a 12 to six curveba- .. HEY JOEY STOP MOWING THE FUCKIN GRASS IM MAKING A TH-cam VIDEO OVER HERE!"

When is the giveaway video coming out?
Hopefully today!
JC W lol I was literally looking if anyone else noticed
What one do think is best to throw that doesn't hurt your arm as much? Smoltz said the curve because your not throwing it as hard.....?
Kal-El Darrin curve yes less power
Because the San Diego Padres are soooo good.
True lol. That said, anyone would kill to be drafted by an MLB club good or bad. The difference between a good MLB club and a bad one is often management/front office not necessarily talent.
Aren't both of these pitches terrible on pitcher's arms long term?
After a whole lifetime of baseball, now I understand the difference 😂
Muy buenos vídeos
I can def throw both
How come Kershaw has one of the best curveball and sliders if you had to trash one of them?
Kershaw is on the dodgers not the padres
wu jimmy ... I thought that immediately. He’s retired and still giving the advice, so the Padre argument don’t fly.
If you can locate both, use both.
00:48 kershaw wasnt on that team huh???
I find to throw a curveball easier than a slider. I can localize it a lot better too. Maybe i'm doing something wrong with my slider
Created a pitcher that had A+ grade on all (slider, slurve, 12-6), but ended up losing the slurve for a palm ball.
Most good hitters are always looking fastball a flat slider is like a mediocre fastball a curve is more of an offspeed pitch with a bigger break
Imo baseball players have the best builds. Thick yet muscular, and always masculine.
Thanks from Texas.
Good game
Cool video!
If a 2 seam fastball has more movement then a 4 seam? Then why would you throw your curve as a 4 seam? Thank you for your videos. I enjoy them. Keep them coming.
We're talking frontspin here, not backspin as in a fastball
The best pitch is the one the batter isn't expecting. So by definition, a pitcher that always throws the same pitch can never throw the best pitch.
This guy is so laid back lol
Then what’s a sinker?
10/10 slider is harder to hit then a 10/10 curve ball but a 6/10 curve ball is harder to hit then a 6/10 slider
dont get why you would have to het rid of one of those pitches, a lot of succesful pitchers have both
I throw 4 seam, 2 seam, 12-6 Curve, Slider, and changeup. I throw the slider 2 ways sometimes I throw it like a frisbee and other I throw it like a curve it has little sideways movement and breaks down late. You know what would have been a lot cooler than you NOT showing the pitches? ... Yeah
Nice glove
What glove is it?
when were you with the Padres Organization? were you ever called up to show? Why arent you in the show now?
Curveball is better !
Could be a slurve
Slider moves more and is a lot faster. Slider all day
What on my GOSH
W0W!
No wey
SLIDER......SE RANDY JOHNSON
guy is giving a demo but never actually throwing the ball...
MLB caliber slider lol
