The more I studied the Ubermensch by Nietzsche the more Luffy came to mind I was so excited to see the title and the vid didn't disappoint. Luffy is the final state, the child whom creates his own values and rejects things that don't matter to him
This is a great take on Luffy and it's why he stands out compared to other manga/anime protagonists and characters in general. Luffy, to me, always symbolized "the most free" because his actions reflect Taoist values. He is freeing the world as a byproduct of his personal goal and lays no claim to praise or accolades from it There's a remarkable depth to Luffy's character that's masked by his apparent simplicity - it's an intuition he has and the easiest way to describe it is for all the thinking that Luffy doesn't do, he intuits while upholding his values of freedom, fairness, and fun. Luffy has been like a breath of fresh air in that regard because of what he has removed or detached himself from. It's why he seems uncharacteristically wise in so many moments throughout the show - he lives in the present exclusively and doesn't cling to things He is already the most free, Pirate King or not
Very refreshing take on Luffy. The closing statement made me immediately think of Kamen Rider: Gaim and its tagline "just live more". A Nietzschian gem i cant recommend enough despite its childish appearance.
Luffy is "the child" I've made this connection years ago when I first read "The three metamophesis". He play freely and fiercly without fears. This characteristic is personified in the name "joy boy" and the Nika fruit. When he is in his awakend form, he is full of laughter and full of "joy".
I think it’s really important to contrast Luffy with Kid here. Kid has the same values of Luffy, similar willpower and goals, but he always fails while Luffy always suceeds. Kid is kinda what we in the west pictures to be a strong male model. Takes what he wants, doesn’t need anyone else, cruel because he has the right to be over those who fail to have the willpower to match him. Yet he lacks the child-like innocience that Luffy has making him fail while Luffy succeeds. It’s important to not just be strong in ideals and physicality, but also carry joy or else you will fall into nihilism. The way that Kid views connections to others as pointless due to being burned by Hawkins and Apoo while Luffy carries joy even after being betrayed by Robin, Sanji, and others
There's a form of Nihilism called Optimistic Nihilism. It's the acceptance that because nothing matters that is true freedom. They're not bound to anything and thus they can choose freely how they want to live. It's a life without the constraints of meaning so as such they make the meaning they choose.
@@Mephilic I don’t think we can label Luffy as that until we know his true dream. For now I think that is a very safe assumption to make, but there is always the chance that Luffy reveals he believes that this is fate rather than purely his own doing

Didn't expect a one piece video to touch on this subject. I always saw a blatant connection between Nietzsche's coming of the Übermensch and the prophesied return of the Messiah. The concept had been misinterpreted through the past. the Übermensch is not a state or a race, but a singular man. One with the willpower to set the entire world to right through not succumbing to the influence of those around them or their own desires, but do naught but what is right and live in Truth and freedom. It's poetic how the man who is famous for proclaiming the death of God would be one to fortell of his return. Great video, just whenever someone mentiones this concept from Nietzsche its all i can think about. God bless.
It's good to see that I wasn't the only one who saw the parallel between Nietzsche and one piece. There is a lot of parallel between Undermechen and the Celestial dragons. As well as the parallel of the camel, the lion and the child with Luffy's character journey.
Luffy genuinely inspired me to develop the outlook on life that I have now. I've had all of this philosophical background that I studied and pondered in hopes of developing it, but it took Luffy to make it click in place. Now I have this sensation of grabbing the infinite and ever-moving ropes of fate, twisting them around my arms and pulling, as absurd and pointless as predestined rebelling against fate may be. I've decided to do this, and will keep doing it, regardless of the bone-shattering, vessel-popping, muscle-ripping pain that the pull of these ropes causes, as long as I have arms and teeth. Should my arms be ripped off and my teeth pulled out, I would stand there, bleeding out, dying a proud man with a now bigger smile and no regrets.

great vid man! I love how, while Oda probably didn't sit down in 1997 and think about intentionally writing an ubermensch shonen protagonist, Luffy's behavior is still so accurately modelled by the philosophy. This is by far my favorite interpretation for why Luffy's absolute lack of internal monologue lends itself so well to a satisfyingly story, why he reads as both dumb and incredibly sharp at the same time, and why One Piece always feels like so much more than just a quippy "try hard and believe in yourself!" shonen battle manga.

I find the comparison with Nietzsches for Luffy is an interesting one because recently I've made comparisons between the ideals and concepts of freedom portrayed by Luffy and Aang from the last airbender. Aang, raised as a peaceful temple nomad remained a vegetarian his whole life as one would assume to be due to his respect for life. But as the avatar his ideals of freedom revolve more around balance and societal order. When I make this comparison to Luffy or that of even Joyboy it does feel weird to be a meat fanatic when at its core is striping the freedom away from another life, unless the view on freedom is centered around power and one's own ability to stand for what they represent. Ultimately, it comes back to Doffy's marineford speech lol
I mean, I suppose that depends on whether or not animals actually have "freedom." One can argue that it's part of an animals life to be eaten. Predators hunt prey. It's just the natural order of things.
Emerson is actually held in quite high regard by Nietzsche, even if they aren't 100% aligned. Things he said about him include: "a glorious, great nature, rich in soul and spirit” “the author who has been the richest in ideas in this century.” “Never have I felt so at home in a book" Not trying to hate. This is a good capturing of his values of recognition of the moment, and the vital, creative power of action. I definitely think Luffy fits the definition in many ways, and The crossover of people who actually read most of his works and are big anime fans is extremely low, so im thankful for this content nonetheless!
I appreciate you. And yes I'm aware of the high regard nietzsche held Emerson but for the sake of trying to stay on topic, I decided to omit that and just focus on the origins of the concept.
This is really interesting because I see Luffy as a contradiction of Nietzsche's Ubermench. Luffy is a Ideal Man but not by the definition of Nietzsche. He is strong willed but he lacks individualism. Luffy as far as I see is defined by his lack of Individualism. His freedom isn't built on his force of will (even though it drives him to his goal) but is enabled by the community he has built around himself to achieve that goal. In turn his will and strength is used to enable those around him to achieve their goals. This can easily be seen throughout the series from Water 7/ Enies Lobby to Wholecake Island but nevermore clearly in Amazon Lily and Post-Marineford. In Amazon Lily, we see Luffy who has had his community uprooted unable to fend for himself in the most basic way. He is trapped, in an island, lost, hungry, with no way get off. This shows the need for community that one needs to depend on. In Post-Marineford, Luffy who is on the verge of death and is mentally broken is brought forth from the brink of destruction by the existent of his crew, a community he has built. In a way Luffy can exist without the Strawhats and its the existence of the Strawhats that makes Luffy free. In a way, One Piece rejects the idea of the ideal man and proposes the ideal community, a community were each persons ability is applied towards achieving each others goal because on their own they can't achieve anything. It is each persons skill and support that allows Luffy to be the "Ideal Man" rather than his individual qualities.
I love this interpretation. And honestly this video isn't necessarily to be taken as law, but to open up a discussion about an overlooked aspect of the character. I look at a lot of what you referred to completely differently but I don't necessarily think you're wrong per say. Either way, it's great to see intelligent discussion of characters
So fing well put homeboy! Great job in the desernment of truth beyond the waves of the shallow shore line and jumping into the deep ocean the old man mentioned. Bravo mate
Great video man! There is a lot of similarities in the philosophies of Nietzsche and one piece. For example the godly cast of dice. Where blackbeard is filled with resentment and takes the safest routes, choosing the strongest crewmates, not engaging if win isnt assured, luffy is allways casting the dice and affirming the moment even if it meant death, cause due to constant repetition he would not live a life wo those moments coming back for eternity
Omg, i can't believe you actually saw my video. This video was heavily inspired by you and I feel honoured that it reached one of my inspirations. Hopefully we can work together somehow in future
So if I get this correctly... Luffy is the Nietzchean Übermensch but not only that he is literally THE second coming of Jesus in the One Piece world (IC CK NI KA) and is simultaneaosly Maitreya of Mahayana Buddhism (Maitreya is basically a Second Coming figure in Mahayana Buddhism considering he is to be the last Buddha to incarnate in this physical plane to bring back to the public the knowledge of Dharma which is what Luffy is effectively doing after some 800 years since the previous JoyBoy and Zoro being an outright explicit Buddhism themed character and represents the Asura that became submissive to the Buddhas while staying true to it's nature)? Bravo Oda, you are one of a kind. It's worth mentioning that no one has done an Islamic or Hindu parallel yet with Luffy so I wonder what those will be (Is Luffy Kalki? The avatar of Vishnu that arrises during the 300 year period known as the receding Kali Yuga? I'm actual not knowledgable on Islamic Eschatology but I have to think they would have a messianic figure that would mark the end of days).
In Islam it is also the second coming of Jesus, but also along with the Mahdi, a messianic deliverer who will fill earth with justice and equity, restore true religion, and usher in a short golden age before the end of the world. Great analysis btw
Ever since I read "How to Philosophize with a hammer and sickle" by Jonas Ceika I was more interested in Nietzsche. But seeing Nietzsche's thought being connected to my favorite work of art (One Piece) really gives me incentive to dive deeper into Nietzsche
For a long time now I've lived my life through the path that involves the most happiness, and so I've cast aside doubt, fear, insecurity, embarrassment, most that know me often describe me as free or unbothered, its truly a freeing idea, once you simply stop caring so much you can enjoy the small pieces of life, and its in the insignificant moments of life which we find the most importance, how often does one win the lottery? Not often enough id say, but how often does one buy groceries or other such mundane tasks, maximizing ones happiness, freeing oneself from permeance, conformity, secrecy, it is how I've found happiness, and now thanks to this video i have a concept which ties it all together, thank you my friend
Instead of lamenting the fact you dont currently have the subscribers you deserve, i hope you will have them in the future. Refreshing takes paired with nostalgic anime. Homesick for a time long gone.
If I could, I would travel to the Past and show Nietzsche the Manga with the screaming Rubberman and say "Siehe, dein Übermensch" (Behold, your Ubermensch)
Cool video, I can see the correspondence between the conceptual figure of the Übermensch and some of Luffy's traits... Nevertheless, Luffy... Is... A... particular representation of... THE MONKEY KING (of pirates). (Maybe we can draw some similarities between Sun Wukong and the Übermensch as well, who knows)
i haven't meet someone that could bring concepts and ideas out its ass like you did in my entire youtube watch. what aterrible interpretation of nietzsche
there is a lot more left to be said about luffy but a Great analysis my friend. Luffy as a character can be easly disregarded as a goof ball a comedy character a happy go lucky guy ... but He is one of the greatest characters in all fictions a Joy boy a god . the nietzsches lens was a bit unexpected to me but a very good one . I more often bring up buddha when i explore luffy in a discution with my friends . great to see someone seeing more into luffy because the mainstream analysis videos like the one totally not mark did recently while good and has some on point observation can be a bit flat and dismissive also headcanony a bit putting worldly enterpretations and words in the mouth of this unworldly character .
I agree, there is a lot to explore with luffy. I think he's one of the broadest characters in fiction, which is obviously a by product of being the main character of one of the most expansive works of fiction ever. I noticed that there isn't really actual 'analysis' of luffys character and more like a narration of his attitude or things he's done or something. I have many thoughts on Luffy in different aspects but those will be for future videos. Appreciate you for watching

Luffy is not an ubermensch. The idea of the ubermensch has to go through corruption of man of society to emerge as over man. Luffy bypasses the whole process. He never negotiates or wrestles with any ideals, with any becomings. He just is what he is.
I heavily disagree. While I do believe luffy has always been who he is, pretty much the entire story has involved him negotiating or wrestling with ideals, like in his battle with crocodile, or doflamingo or the entire battle vs katakuri which epitomises this point. Nietzsche himself just suggested a path he thinks that man could take to achieving that true potential, becoming the 'super man', luffy not following that exact path doesn't make him any less of one, rather it's whether or not he embodies those traits that determines his status, in this case, he happens to. Regardless tho, I still appreciate your comment, I love thoughtful discourse
The truly free is free from all social bonds of norms, has absolute Clary i.e, no doubts i.e., no thoughts not because he has figured out everything but because he's not trying to figure out life, he's just living it. He who is as as stated, is master of his fate....as he's the master of his present
And then he himself said i know no better life purpose than to perish in attempting the great and impossible.....and perhaps this is his great and impossible To be totally free socially, mentally and physically To live in the present to living life by constantly moving but still being focused on the present and not constantly trying to figure it out be standing and observing. Dont try to measure the ocean's depth from the shore , jump in swim to the floor and find it urself, well we might never find it either way but we can atleast enjoy the water if we folloe the latter. So live . Carpe diem.
i wonder if oda projects his own way of living into One Piece & Luffy, or does he do this unconsciously? Driven by the universe? I would love to know more about that man…
After a sea of slop video essays, this is actually a really good one. One nitpick, Luffy is not the titular character because the title of his story is One Piece, not Luffy. That's just semantics tho

It really help me and remind me exactly why I like Luffy. I should not think too much. I have 2 or 3 things which I really wanted to do and I think I will do those soon. Great Great Video 🎉🎉🎉 Subbed
Thank you, and I'm glad this video was able to inspire you.
I'd add that Luffy, especially after Gear 5, embodies Neitzsche's praise of 'cheerfulness' in The Gay Science.
Cool video!!
Thank you. And yes, keen observation
Very well thought out writeup. Appreciate you for watching
Things he said about him include:
"a glorious, great nature, rich in soul and spirit”
“the author who has been the richest in ideas in this century.”
“Never have I felt so at home in a book"
Not trying to hate.
Not to glaze or anything but such a decent video/essay. Definitely some erudite piece of work yet so authentic which we love to see. Made my evening
Appreciate your kind words.
the best description of luffy philosophically
Thank you for this. It reminded me of my own dream ba of freedom, the freedom to create and invent. I cannot shy away, so thank you
You're very welcome
My favourite philosopher and my favourite media combined , i absolutely adore this
Thank you
So fing well put homeboy! Great job in the desernment of truth beyond the waves of the shallow shore line and jumping into the deep ocean the old man mentioned. Bravo mate
Much appreciated
I was reading Zarathoustra and one piece and i was struck by the parallels
Great video man! There is a lot of similarities in the philosophies of Nietzsche and one piece. For example the godly cast of dice. Where blackbeard is filled with resentment and takes the safest routes, choosing the strongest crewmates, not engaging if win isnt assured, luffy is allways casting the dice and affirming the moment even if it meant death, cause due to constant repetition he would not live a life wo those moments coming back for eternity
Indeed. Great point. I'd suggest you check out my recent video, where I also point out some other blackbeard parallels
Very interesting take on luffy. Beeing free means also beeing free of you inner dialogue and just be present
A video on Nietzsche and Luffy? You might convince me to finally pick up One Piece again
Do it
hmmm
Omg, i can't believe you actually saw my video. This video was heavily inspired by you and I feel honoured that it reached one of my inspirations. Hopefully we can work together somehow in future
this channel is really underrated i have been binge watching after i found this video
Aww, I really appreciate that. Thank you for watching
This is an awesome perspective on Luffy. Great video, thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Much appreciated. Thank you for watching and hopefully subscribing lol.
Subscribed right away, looking forward to more content!@@Phantom-gz1mm
Legendary video, keep it up man.
Appreciate you. I'll do my best
I love the delivery of this whole video I was gripped all the way through, amazing work!
Thank you
This video reached me in the algorithm
Finally someone is speaking ❤
You.... Just gave me like 20 different video ideas 😭
Daymmm bro daymm...
In Islam it is also the second coming of Jesus, but also along with the Mahdi, a messianic deliverer who will fill earth with justice and equity, restore true religion, and usher in a short golden age before the end of the world. Great analysis btw
I’m going to watch this video a few times because I hope it will stick with me
went in thinking it would turn into "luffy is a sigma grindset gigachad" but this was a pleasant surprise
For some reason a lot of people thought this too but glad you stuck around
You better quote Luffy when he says "I don't want to be a hero, because heroes have to share the meat!"
Better be in this video. Better be.
Missed opportunity
i dont think that quote has anything to do with what hes talking about
Wow . What a video. I was playing a game when I started , but I had to give my full attention.
Excited to see your future videos
Much appreciated. Comments like this motivate me to such a massive extent
Underrated channel. Can't believe you have less than a couple thousand subs.
Much appreciated man. And hopefully we get there, in due time.
Arguably one of the greatest video essays I have watched
Much appreciated
Finally someone who r in my wavelength much appreciate it bro
great video man. I came to the same ideas as well but you perfectly articulated it all very well. new subscriber!
@@HP-tw6tl much appreciated
Amazing analysis!!
I also see a great flirtation with existentialism and absurdism at Luffy
Thank you. And funny enough, I do have a video that will come out in the future that adresses this
Ever since I read "How to Philosophize with a hammer and sickle" by Jonas Ceika I was more interested in Nietzsche. But seeing Nietzsche's thought being connected to my favorite work of art (One Piece) really gives me incentive to dive deeper into Nietzsche
This makes me happy to see. I'm glad the video resonated as intended. Thanks for watching
You're most welcome, and this is a beautiful comment
Very inspiring! To achieve this mindset of the present moment i would really recommend meditation on a regular bases.
Instead of lamenting the fact you dont currently have the subscribers you deserve, i hope you will have them in the future. Refreshing takes paired with nostalgic anime.
Homesick for a time long gone.
If I could, I would travel to the Past and show Nietzsche the Manga with the screaming Rubberman and say "Siehe, dein Übermensch" (Behold, your Ubermensch)
thats an insanely interesting outlook on luffy, wow
Thnx
this was fascinating. also, the edit is phenomenal
Thank you. I appreciate comments like this
thank you for the video. I found your analysis very interesting
Such a well made video essay... keep em coming!
Thank you. That means a lot, I'll do my best.
i haven't meet someone that could bring concepts and ideas out its ass like you did in my entire youtube watch.
what aterrible interpretation of nietzsche
Thanks for watching!
Damn I needed this!
Thanks for the vid, it's well written !
Luffy is more of an Absurd Man as described by Camus. Absurdism is the Philosophy that solves the problem of Nietzsche's Nihilism.
This is amazing, thanks!
Im sold brother, thanks

Awesome and insightful video!😁
Couldn’t have said it better myself!🤘😎🤘
Much appreciated
Great video, love to see good video essays❤❤
Love the vid, unique and cool comparison
Much appreciated
there is a lot more left to be said about luffy but a Great analysis my friend.
Appreciate you for watching
yeah man i've been wanting to make videos about luffy for somtime but the time never seem to come among other things of course but this character has captivated me in a way like no one else did
exited to see what you'll make next and hopefully i'll make mine by then hhhh
Let's meet in the new world @@Phantom-gz1mm
THAT is a CRAZY title.
Hahaha
Luffy seems to me to represent Plato's the form of the good more than Neitczhean Uberman
Perhaps. No other perspective is necessarily wrong, this video is just opening discourse to the existence of such perspective in the first place
Video cuts short at the end, but great video!
Apologies for that, accidentally cut it short because there's a copyrighted section. Wish I could fix it. Anyway, I appreciate you for watching
The truly free is free from all social bonds of norms, has absolute Clary i.e, no doubts i.e., no thoughts not because he has figured out everything but because he's not trying to figure out life, he's just living it.
He who is as as stated, is master of his fate....as he's the master of his present
7:37
Mentally strong with strong will
And then he himself said i know no better life purpose than to perish in attempting the great and impossible.....and perhaps this is his great and impossible
To be totally free socially, mentally and physically
To live in the present to living life by constantly moving but still being focused on the present and not constantly trying to figure it out be standing and observing.
I would love to know more about that man…
Did you actually say Monkey D Luci? Love it!
I haven't seen one piece the same since I read thus spoke Zarathustra
Great vid man
great video
Thank you, I really appreciate it
Good video. Lacks some grip.
bro tricked me in thinking it is a german video, anyways I can understand english so Im listening
Great vid keep it up!
Thanks so much
Nice vid bro 👍
After a sea of slop video essays, this is actually a really good one. One nitpick, Luffy is not the titular character because the title of his story is One Piece, not Luffy. That's just semantics tho
Thank you. That means a lot. And hahaha, noted for when next I do a luffy video
Ahh yes the Ubermensch Sun God Joy Boy NIKA D. Luffy
This applies to Goku as well and Luffy is inspired from Goku
Great video. New sub.
Thank you, and welcome to the community
