  • Opel, Vauxhall, Nissan and Renault vans
    20/11/14: These vans share the same engine with a very expensive design fault: one or more injector gets fused into the cylinder head because when it's raining or in car wash the water is dripping on one or more injectors.
    Release date: 21 Nov 2014 by BBC WatchDog
    Please, drop me a note if you notice that technically anything is wrong with this video, like no audio, or the audio is completely messed up, maybe the audio is from another video.
    At the time of posting everything is OK with this video, but it did happen in the past, that someone, maybe a hacker(?) messed with this video and made it totally useless.

    Just recently heard it from a mechanic, that 1st he sprays a lot of WD-40 on the cylinder head at the injectors, then he runs the engine for about an hour to get it hot, meanwhile he sprays more WD-40 near the bottom of the injectors a few times during this time. Then he shuts off the engine and removes the injectors. He said, that since he is using this method, he managed to get all injectors out. I no longer have the Vivaro, but if someone tries this method successfully I suggest to post it here for feedback.

      Unless the injectors are shorted inside, then the engine will not start for more than 2 seconds before the ecu cuts the power.

      Although it might take several hours, eventually one or two days and stinks when applied!
      I suggest to let it soak in a VINEGAR bath.
      Never heard or read about anyone else using this basic method. But the reality is that vinegar is an excellent acid to remove rust! It's cheap, effective, easy to use, not poisonous, the only issue is that it stink!
      Whatever the case it will "eat" the rust away. When using it the only concern is to keep the parts submerged in it. In other words don't let it dry... Oh! While speaking about it. Get the strongest vinegar you can find. Works faster! ;-)
      In my neck of the woods it's available in 7% and 35% concentration. The later being my preferred choice.
      Procedure: Let is soak for 24h or more. Clean the mess, a thin and long screw driver and rags. Combined with a wet dry vacuum. Works perfectly. After that follow the example of the OP above.
      Soak it in WD40. Leave it for awhile if the van start even better, warm it up. Than slightly release the bolts that hold the injectors in place. Do not remove them completely. Two or three turns should ne enough!
      Start the engine and let it's internal pressure spit/push the injector out... It will come off nice and easy. ;-)
      Cheers

    Injectors on dci 1.9 recon cost £120 each. Four injectors failing at once is bullshit. The 2.0 vivaro the injectors may seize but why break because seized? All four injectors 100,000 miles? The he repair bill £5k? The garages charging that should be on watch dog themselves. Nothing mentioned about how that charge is extortion. I wouldn't charge anywhere near that. Under a grand for sure. Likely one injector and a hundred pounds labor so £250 plus vat.

    • @MartinMurray1966

      the £5k bill is the cost for a new replacement engine and fitting

    • @crpth1
      @crpth1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MartinMurray1966 - Which in all honesty is bullocks!! In the WORST case scenario. Engine head would have to come off and the failed injector(s) would have to be drilled out. Notice, this is the worst case scenario! If using proper tools and methods. Head removal would be pretty much never needed! But OK accidents happen so some cases would come to that.
      Also very dependent on how long the situation as been going on. As usual early detection and correction saves a lot of time and money.
      Like the saying goes. "A gram of prevention is worth..." ;-)
      Get an entire new engine... Well, it's a perfect solution for the garage/mechanic involved, that's for sure! ;-)

      @AngryPostmanSthlm2 honestly i think its more an flaw in the injectors themself. Just an bad badge. My vivaro has ben running for 330.000miles. As an company car so its the slut of the company. She takes it all... No problems so far. I did have to replace the egr. But i costed me 30$ and 5hours work.
      It would run fine with the faulty one but not recomended of course

    • @crpth1
      @crpth1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DiyNuke - It's not an issue of the injectors. This same engine is in several other vehicles from Renault (Megane, Espace...) and others, namely Nissan (X-Trail...).
      And in none of them this issue comes up! In fact it's one of the best and most reliable engines out there! Kind of sarcastic we're talking about it failing, isn't it?!
      The problem is really a seal design and/or implementation. Many times combined with a blockage in the rubber drains. On both sides of the scuttle panel. Those rubber hoses can be easily seen just by opening the bonnet! Pull them out and clean the leaves and debris accumulated in there. It's just a few minutes task!
      For you guys parking under trees be specially aware of this detail. BTW this is an extremely important cleaning point for vehicles of any brand and type. Be it a Toyota or a Mercedes... Chose a name! ;-)

      @@camwinstone - For what it's worth the 2.0 DCI also has the plastic cover over the injectors area. Although water can still sip trough/around. The rest is history.
      BTW for what it's worth, the failing seal. Is a regular neoprene seal that is, pretty much, the standard in the industry. Dependent on conditions it can fail relatively fast or last for a long time. This same type and seal material. Can be found, literally, in every model and brand sold nowadays!
      Whatever the case, when it fails, unluckily in this particular model the water accumulate precisely in the injectors bay!
      Improving/replacing the seal and keeping the scuttle panel drains clean are some of the actions that can avoid/minimize several head aches in the future. ;-)

      Something's not right in the ridiculous general assumptions! When I was looking to buy my Renault Trafic (cheap). I had trouble finding a, I'll say again, cheap one with relatively low mileage.
      What came up at the time was usually above 450k and generally above 500k km, one in particular with 700k! Mine was on the 230k range. Now is slightly above 300k, for the time being!
      I guess you don't need to be a genius to figure out that both versions of the story don't match! Do they?!
      If it's such a junk. Why on earth are all those km's in there?! Hmm!
      BTW 300k and the engine is smooth as new! Once again, strange! Hmm! ;-)

      its a NISSAN fault. Renault made the prievious engine, which i have. injectors are at the front, and the airbox covers it all at a shallow angle. oddly, my 2005 1.9CDTi also don`t get rain water leakage..

    Horrible engineering. Such a vital component is relied on by a windshield seal? Nothing else? No covering of the injectors or anything? Just a window seal? It's this kind of lazy, half-done crap that manufactures try to get away with. That's why you don't reward them by buying their products when they can't even offer you a reputation for producing reliable products. Stick with toyota and Lexus.

    • @crpth1
      @crpth1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're a bit delusional! LOL 😂 Maybe that's the reason why Toyota also has several issues going on. On their own quarters! Some went all the way to group lawsuits! Shal we say, Oops!
      Wonder why, one of the best reputed Toyota's ever! The "famous" Toyota Hilux, in so many places around the world. For example, from South America to South Africa OR even Australia, Just to mention most of the South Hemisphere. LOL 😂!
      Is so "affectionally" called Toyota "Rolux", because of it's tendency to roll, with the occupants inside.
      Or why so many have oil consumptions issues. Or VVTi issues and so on... My wife's Toyota had ABS issues "happily" solved/payed by ME! Because as usual they didn't give a sh_t! In spite of being a well know issue, ON BOTH sides of the "pond"! My brother in law, exactly same model and year Toyota, had exactly the same problems! Oops! Again?!! At least for the Airbag and the steering, they made recalls! These three examples is in one Toyota model! Not several models. I repeat, one!
      Now the sarcastic part. When my wife's Toyota break down, not so long ago. It was my Renault Traffic 2.0 DCI that towed it back home... My wife was joking that her (Made in Japan) Toyota couldn't be towed by a FRENCH car! LOL 😂
