I'm considering doing a follow-up video where I add a bunch of FF spin-off characters to the list. (Tactics, Legend, World of, Chrono Trigger, what have you.) Let me know if that's something you'd like to see!
I'd be interested in seeing the Mystic Quest characters ranked.
Do we discount TGC a bit because his supposed perma-haste comes from the Excalibur and not his class or do we bump him up even more because he comes with a free auto-haste weapon?

EIko is, in my opinion and that of speedrunners, the better of the two summoners/white mages. Statistically she not as good as Garnet (but you can abuse the game mechanics to make her have some of if not the highest stats in the game) but is just better as a white mage and I think as a summoner as Madeen is the best summon in the game for consistent high damage output with little to no setup and double cast is just better and more reliable then Garnets trance ability. But in general the best way to differentiate them is Garnet is a dark white mage and Eiko is a light white mage due to Eiko having the holy attribute and Garnet having the shadow attribute.
I'd like to see that if you haven't done it already.

I think you have Aerith criminally underrated. Her attack damage lags, though as others have pointed out, you can steal a staff that puts her well ahead of the curve for a while. But what isn't lacking is her magic damage. And thanks to the Enemy Skill materia, you can quickly access some real good nukes (like Matra Magic) that don't use a lot of MP and just wipe everything in most random encounters.
But the real thing that puts her ahead is her Limit Break (and not the one you think). The real S-tier limit break is FURY BRAND, which instantly fills the limit breaks of the two other characters in the party. This is great for grinding limit breaks to unlock the next tier, and it's even more amazing for boss fights where you can hit the boss with four straight limit breaks right off the bat. If limit breaks matter at all for determining tier placement, then having a character who doubles your limit break output is surely noteworthy. She makes every party better.
Hey Brickroad, great video. Wanted to add that I think Garnet gets a bad rap in FFIX, and is a lot stronger if you focus on summons and build up a stock of stones for a few of the key summons. If you get 99 Ores, the Odin instant death is something like 50% on the entire enemy group, and 99 garnets makes Bahamut regularly hit for 9k+ damage on the entire enemy group (as opposed to other 9999 damage abilities that generally only hit one enemy.) It requires a bit of grinding, but honestly I found it easier than grinding out all of the frogs for Quina's frog drop (and pretty much all of the "farm for damage" characters, to be honest), since you can just farm with Jewel and refine the materials. Atomos is pretty legit too. I dunno, I feel like people sleep on Garnet because she spends a decent amount of time being unresponsive, but I found her to be a late game powerhouse. The White Magic is a modest bonus, but I rarely used it.

Selphie has The End though, which kills absolutely everything but the undead. It even beats Omega Weapon, so technically she‘s the best character ever

You know your stuff! I'm impressed. Really enjoyed this. Just one thing: Tifa with Powersoul and Death Sentence is surely S tier. Btw I'm just curious, how did you select the background music? There were some great choices like Besaid and Mt Gagazet
Cyan is a beast and so slept on when people rate 6 , give him some haste boots a what ever shield you want . Level 7 end game with the quick spell and he deals 80 k . Only have to level his Vigor up to 110 to get max damage without his final sword . Yes that means you can get max damage and have 2 of the final spears. Quick eliminates the down time issues of charging has it pauses everyone else's ATB . all while being in the back row
I'll be honest, I think Locke is definitely worse than that. He's forced into your party during more of the WoB than pretty much anyone else, and he's basically always the worst one in the party. Celes at least comes prepackaged with some spells that make her passable, but the best thing you can do with Locke for most of the game is give him your Genji glove and the best weapons you have available, and he'll still do less damage than anyone else. Even by the time he gets the Valiant Knife, everyone else is starting to bring their endgame builds online. Meanwhile Locke is still just swinging the Valiant Knife + Atma Weapon, and doing less damage than them. You can give him the Offering/Master Scroll if you want him to really shine, but anyone you give that to is gonna shine. Setzer will still do more damage than Locke would by using Fixed Dice (unless you level up well past 50+, which is super unnecessary) and he'll do it without the Genji Glove, which frees up a relic slot for a Ribbon/Miracle Shoes, and lets him keep his shield.
Love Locke but he's pretty mid. I'll sometimes always keep him in my party just because I like him but that's nothing more than favoritism.

Celes deserves at least A! Runic isn't the best but with the right set-up she's a parallel of Terra.
14 is just 11 with an aesthetic upgrade and more busywork before you unlock the classic Final Fantasy series jobs for worldbuilding. It's even got exactly the same race lineup of human, elf, big bruiser gorillaman, catgirl, and magic midget, just with different names and minor aesthetic differences. 14's catgirl race look better than 11's, fight me.

The only major disagreement I have is Barret. Strong throughout the whole game, strongest character endgame. Certified S tier.

The VII placements in general are the shakiest, considering the sheer number of characters you covered, that's not bad going at all. Nice list, made me want to replay some of the old classics!
Celes is the best character in FFVI, imo. She basically carries a huge chunk of the game especially if you're trying to keep your level low throughout the game. Magic boosting equipment makes her level 2 spells melt every mob.
She gets:
Ultima Weapon
Paladin Shield
Genji Helm
Force Armor/Minerva
Miracle Shoes
Offering
Also in FFVII, Yuffie is a lot stronger than I thought. She has an early limit break which is her best move and it charges constantly.
Cloud, Cid and Yuffie are my main 3, Cid has Highwind which is arguably the 2nd best Limit at the end of the game, he also is the only other character besides Cloud that has a Triple growth weapon for leveling up Materia (of course he also has a 5 slotted Double growth weapon which is better if you're trying to level up tons of Materia at once)
Yuffie has my 3rd favorite Limit which is actually her Level 3 limit Doom of the Living, end game it does a TON of damage. Also her Conformer is by far the best way to Morph enemies, which is of course useful for Source farming.

The XIV protagonist probably needs their own dedicated tier above SS.
End game Rosa is MVP IMHO. Her healing is invaluable and equipped with the Artemis bow she can actually do solid physical damage from the back row. Pray is actually a fairly useful spell when dungeon crawling. Top all of that off with her learning Holy which deals huge damage to Zeromus.
love the list and your perspectives. I do have to argue Gogo. I personally would put him at least B tier for the flexibility alone. I do understand that he's directly "not" better than any character due to the lack of stats and equipment; but having a "steal" command w/Blitz/Tools or whatever, makes him a better version of Locke/Celes for example.
Gogo? You didn't even mention his Mimic command! Terra/Celes/Gogo/Mog was my MVP team in FFVI! (Gogo knows all spells known by any other character in the party.)
Prompto was actually my favorite of the alternate FF15 characters to play once they brought in the party switch function. His whole thing is that he Has Guns, which is hilarious. There are some enemies you can just absolutely demolish with his machine gun.
Spamming magic is strong in disc 1 of FF7, and Aerith hits noticeably harder with it than anybody but Cloud. She also can get the Striking Staff as a steal in the train graveyard which can put her over Tifa and Barret's attack damage till Kalm and on par I think until Corel. Personally I'd put her at least on par with them.
Is what he said about Terra true? I don’t remember any ability points in battle affecting morph?
I think Sazh is more of a B-C tier because once you get to Pulse, you can craft items that grants Haste at the beginning of battle for about a minute which is more than enough time to clear the field with more powerful characters.
Also, no Marcus from FFIX? He's in the party for longer than some of the guest star party members!
Barret has second best limit break in the game after cloud, then Cid
Tifa should absolutely be SS tier tbh, once you get to Mount Nibel you get her weapon the Powersoul, which powers up when Tifa is Near Death. You can cast death sentence on her and she will being doing like 2000 damage each attack when Cloud will only be doing maybe 500 - 800. Then if Tifas HP is critical with Death sentence it stacks and she could do max damage with a critical hit. Then Later On in the great glacier, you can't get the added cut materia which you can link to Deathblow, so she will get a critical hit AND a normal hit or miss the deathblow but still get a super strong normal hit. Then in Mideel Tifa is made even more powerful by finding the Cursed Ring, which increases Tifas strength by 30 points, and auto equips death sentence (which you can have added effect linked with Odin or destruct materia to be immune to the instant death when timer hits 0) which with deathblow and added cut, Tifa will be doing insane damage. And Totally unnecessary but if you wanted to, using the powersoul to do a lot of damage you can pretty easily morph an enemy in the gongaga mako reactor to get power sources to increase Tifas strength, before even getting Cid. Tifa also later in the game gets a weapon like vincent that has max accuracy, but it pales in comparison to the damage Powersoul can do.
Yes this is the one. The only true SS tier character in the whole series but you really have to know this trick before hand. The biggest problem is that it actually ruins playthroughs once you know it by making the game way too easy unless you force yourself to not use it.
As long as the "Can do everything with all of them" list doesn't depreciate how good those games are.. I'm cool with it. Still right on all the good levels here. Well played.

To me FF4 had the best predetermined roles and balance in the whole series overall. FF9 was also a close contender and soo was FFX untill the end when you can make yourself completely stupid stupid overpowered.
Agree with most stuff but Vivi is definitely not B tier. He consistently does more damage than most other characters through the majority of the story, can be a crazy boss nuke if you use auto reflect, and hits for 9999 one of the earliest in the party, and is the only one who can double hit for that much with his limit break (except double holy from eiko but she is less consistent).
Faris is NOT baseline. She's easily the best character due to her stats being the highest, most versatile and powerful and Krile/Galuf are subpar because the same job classes have to apply to very different stat blocks.
When you play Prompto with The Clever's Talisman his SMG gets infinite ammo it's a game changer if you pair it with high crit.

it took me hours to find the way to progress in the story in FF3 and so when I found Minwu my characters at about 2000hp... so he was pretty much F tier for me, like all the temporal characters xD
Steiner's sword arts are just outclassed by MP Attack.
I know this was a while ago, but I’d argue with Lighting’s placement. It’s solely because of Army of One. AoO is a Ravager ability, and the thing about ravager is that they build up stagger. AoO is the fastest way to get the stagger damage to 999%. Especially if you give her the Axis Blade which will get her atb bar half full each time she uses AoO. Just make sure to cast haste on her.
Why is Gogo so low? They can pull down the entire parties spells with the magic command. Two other good commands can be added to the palette, and you can mimic to save the use of an item.
I'll have to finish watching later, but lemme just say you gave me the cursed mental image of Strago and Gogo taking turns bench pressing the airship. Thanks.

Kimahri's location and ability to get early Holy is OP
He will genuinely solo the game until postgame if you break him into Holy on Yuna's grid
Though that is a very specific ability, and I think he suffers from how his Ultimate Limit Break is a Single Hit Attack in a game where everyone hits the damage cap. Even if his is outright the strongest attack in the game (and would be stronger than the multihit ones if it broke the other damage caps, like, if limit breaks had no damage caps Kimahri's ultimate would oneshot every boss in the game because it ignores magic defense and has absurd power, it just gets capped too early by being single hit and not breaking caps)
I thought Realm gets the Interceptor stuff if Shadow dies on the Floating Continent
if my memory serves me right, I belive you are correct.
You can also use Strago’s Rippler spell to give anyone Interceptor.
Snow has the fastest casting speed in the game. I'd honestly put him in B Tier but you really don't unlock his potential as Ravager or Medic until you push past crystarium lvl 8. Totally understand why he's at C
steiner has charge that alone makes him S tier, also shock, stock break, climhazard are good, but at one point his attack command is enough if not using charge
I would honestly place Auron as S Tier because he just constantly puts out great damage and will survive any attack thanks to his much higher strength and HP at any point of the main storyline right through to the Final Boss and the Omega Weapon fight where he’s still basically the strongest aside from Rikku doing tricks with Mix.
It’s only when you really start powering up for the Super Bosses that then Wakka and Tidus with their Overdrives surpass him.
He is also supercritical to the No Sphere Grid Challenge alongside Rikku.
I love the debate and the comment section. It's really hard to put in a tier list ALL the playable characters throughout different games. I would love to see FFIII and V having their specific jobs even if that would be a huge work :

I think I am going to take the time to do the full list proper like this, but I do want to say in regards to FF2, I appreciate your logic and I totally understand why you rated most of what you did where you do but I think I would rate Leon at an A solely because in a Speedrun, he is the star player that carries the party since he does actually start with a few decently high end game levels in a couple of weapon categories. I would probably also swap Josef and Gordon (maybe stick Gordon in C instead). Josef is only with you for a single dungeon. He has no skills leveled to start except I believe like 1 or 2 levels in unarmed, which is functionally worthless because it takes 30 seconds to grind weapons to level 2 and unarmed super super sucks in FF2 consistently throughout the game and only has any value at all if you grind it super high very early on as your power can far exceed that of the weapons you will have access to. Gordon, meanwhile, is pretty pathetic, but here's the saving graces that save him from the F tier IMO: you get him in your party for a decent chunk of time, twice - depending on the version you are playing that gives him a lot of chance for stat growth - also he comes predisposed to use a spear at the precise times in the game when your absolute strongest weapons available, whether you sequence break and hit up Mysidia early or not, are spears. I might also place Ricard in A because swords and spears are dope, the length of time you have him, and in Soul of Rebirth, he and Minwu totally carry Josef and Scott's sorry asses.
Na, this one is easy. Gordon has a cape. Capes are bad (according to our lord and savior Edna Mode). Gordon also looks a lot like Edward from FFIV. The name "Gordon" even sounds like "Edward" if you squint really hard and are mostly deaf. Ergo, Gordon is an easy FF tier, no question.
FFX is the only non job system game I have played deeply enough to assign tiers. So before I reach the point, my guesses and justifications are (assuming international/HD version)
S: Wakka, Rikku and Yuna (Both have an overdrive capable of doing well over 1 million damage total, while rikku has powerful buffs in her mixes, though wakka could go lower if playing blitzball is annoying and you don't savescum the final league game to get the desired prize to pop up on the next league. Beyond that, summons are essiantially bonus character slots, Wakka can hit flying mobs and has the status attacks which aren't completley useless in this game.)
A: Tidus (Has a multi-hit overdrive, exclusive access to time magic is also relatively useful before the regular sphere grid can open up to others. But the fewer hits of the overdrive and inability to hit flying *just* keep him from S tier)
B: Auron (good attacker with armor piercing and debuffs, one overdrive does two hits)
C: Khimari (the blue magic becomes far less useful in the endgame, but some are situationally useful)
D: Lulu (literally painful overdrive that isn't worth the effort without maxing magic, which is only absolutely needed endgame for the very arena monster that drops the items that let you max magic.)
ehh, kinda close to your choice, and I mostly agree with your choices. Though I still think that Lulu having bad overdrive and losing uniqueness early to aeons makes it hard to see her as a B tier.
I'd also be interested in your opinions of the tiers for the jobs in the games with a job system, maybe in that spinoff video.

Lightning totally beats Noctis.
She killed the God of her universe and made a new universe. Her powerlevel is cosmical. Noctis is marely the strongest guy on his planet. Lightning is a conqueror of a universe.
She’s very disliked compared to many other FF characters so people look past that. She has her moments but she kinda is unlikeable

Lightning is the strongest main character in Final Fantasy. She kills the creator god of her world.
The Aerith/s pixel art looked like a startled boar to me till you said her name. Also, remembering 99 nonsense anime names is perhaps what impressed me most about the video.
Only placements I might disagree with is Cyan and Strago. I'd peg each one a spot higher:
- Cyan cleans up the second quarter of the game (Magitek Factory to Floating Continent) with dual Kazekiris (Tempests). It is quite reliable, and there aren't really any other standout candidates for that Genji Glove. That ultimately doesn't change his abysmal endgame prospects, sadly. I honestly think he's the worst in the game at the finish line.
- Strago has reasonably good endgame options in GrandTrain and Aero. You're going to get the former guaranteed anyway if you're doing all the things, and Aero is at worst a five-minute detour for a random encounter right outside Thamasa. Nabbing both and just using those is much more time efficient than grinding out standard high level magic for him. You can round out the kit with Big Guard and White Wind in a few extra minutes and he functionally covers the bases of attack/heal/support with zero grind. You know... IF you're going to use him, which anyone would be forgiven for just not. I know I never did for many years and many runs. That said, in current year I think he's kinda okay as opposed to kinda crappy. I like the old coot.
At the very least, he's probably not going to be sitting on my bench come endgame anymore.
I love that you actually say tidus correctly. Sick of hearing titus out of everyone.
I will also say, if anyone does the end game grinding in FFX, then yuna, Tidus, and wakka become the best team. They are the best damage with their overdrives and obvious summon cheese.
Rikku is solid with the mix, but the other three are seriously too good
If you are going to take out yojimbo, then yeah; I'd use rikku. But the one shot any boss is OP

FFIV: Kain > Edge - Mostly due to i hate throwing and Edge is way to squishy, meanng both are B. I would rate Fosya lower, due to super squishy even if in the back row.
FFVI: Celes > Terra - Mostly for the story though. Gameplay wise I agree with you.
FFVII: Barret & Vincent - Are either B teir or SS+ tier due to a weapon and easily going beyond the cap & can one shot any enemy in the game, which Barret's is easier to get to that point.
FFXIII: All characters should be F tier, I do not care about their damage, it is all about that they made 2 and 3. /s
In ff8 if you have enough ammo and are very fast irvine can do more damage than squall also quistis with degenorator is the most broken limit break in the game or at least against enemies especially whenever you run into ruby dragons also in my opinion slots in any of the games is so frustrating because you constantly have to pause if you want to get the right one
Celes is B?! Shocking!!!!! She is so OP after a shot spurt of grinding.
Kinda messed up that Aerith is dead, while Minwu, Josef, Ricard, Tellah, Galuf, Vivi, Tidus, Auron, and Noctis are just fine and dandy.
The only disagreement with your list is Edge vs Yang. Yang can take a few hits because of his extreme HP, but is equal to or superior to Edge in damage output in my experience. Edge is made of wet tissue paper. I've had *Rydia* survive attacks that Edge didn't. And these were attacks that ignored row defense bonuses. When I get to take Yang and drop Edge, I do so.
I’m a year late to the party but loved the video and your insight. The only three things I disagree with is Aerith is way to low. Imo she’s the second best character in her time with the game easily A tier. The second is I think Shadows evasion and powerful throw puts him in low A tier but small gripe. And third did you really say Cait Sith is your favorite FF7 character. Lol I’m just messing with you but damn if me and my buddies talk about FF7 we always talk about how the game would be better if he didn’t exist.

This great list would have been even better with Laguna, Kiros and Ward (I can understand skipping Seifer and Edea since they're only in the party so briefly). I guess they would all be B tier though. They're not really exceptional in any way.
And for FF IX: Marcus and Blanc are also B, while Cinna is F and Beatrix is S Tier
I'd argue on one hand you can't technically rank the "freelancer" characters, or have to rank all their jobs in the context of their game, which would get insane. I understand you're basically averaging out their potential, but FF 5 characters feel they have the potential to be the strongest of the entire multiverse.
You're the first person I've ever heard mention FF 8 infinite limit breaks. It's something that's long made it one of my least favorite games, on top of all the controversial Draw system, consumable spells, and the affect that has on stats.
I feel like with Vivi, he can fall behind very badly. I felt he only keeps pace if you do the chocobo hot and cold game to get some good spells as early as possible. And personally on 9, I preferred even just Garnet or Eiko over Vivi, because I get white magic and damage magic on par or better than Vivi much of the time.
Yuna's MP 1 ability also makes her Holy spell crush almost everything in the original game, and her ultimate weapon was the easiest to make. I also like to refer to Yuna's summon overdrives as the Aeon Bomb. When I play JRPGs, I'm often underleveled the first time due to desire to see the story. And this put me in a bind once I got to the second Seymour fight. My characters didn't have enough speed stat to keep up, and Seymour kills your summons in one hit, however, you can stock pile every summon's overdrive, and then just have all of them unload on bosses, often defeating them with ease. I want to say in the original, she's also S tier starting early-mid game due to basically being easy mode to set up and use.
Locke with a genji glove and offering using the valiant knife and atma weapon is just stupid. He will do strong damage regardless of his health pool. Setzer is b tier his kit is way to random

Umaro isn't going to crack 2000 too often? Uh what...
I just beat the pixel remaster and he was rocking 9999's on every slam/throw attack. No need to even equip berserker ring. Used him in my final party against kefka and he did about 70% of the damage due to how quick he attacks relative to others (since he will attack while selecting your commands).
People sleep on Umaro but he trivializes the whole final fight. Give him Miracle Shoes and Ribbon and you're good to go. All you need is a healer and you win the game.
Also... Strago is D tier? What... That's pretty ridiculous... Is big guard a joke to you? Aqua Rake is a carry for world of balance and much of world of ruin. he is really easy to obtain (which is something you didn't consider for your rankings at all). Grand Delta is also very solid.
He isn't better than Celes/Relm/Terra but he sure isn't worse than Celes IMO. Not all lore are useful but the ones that are, are quite strong.
You need to give Aeris another chance. She is easily A tier with Fury Brand, the level 2 limit break that fills the other party members' limit break up. Give her the cover materia and she is easily filling it up and your other two members can start throwing around level 3 limits every other turn. Her higher magic stat also means she can easily clear every random encounter with matra magic.
I am least confident about my placement of the 7 and 13 characters. I'm definitely willing to revisit this monster at some point down the road. Even with Enemy Skill though, you don't get to use Aeris's strengths during any of the actually hard fights in the game and I think I'll still end up counting that against her. (Apparently Barret's natural magic stat is also good enough to consider maybe bumping him up to A.)
I didn't really think about it until during the premiere, but I didn't factor in the 13 cast's summon magic at all. I literally only use summons as a full HP and ATB refill in that game, and have no idea how Gestalt Mode even works, oops!
@@brickroadbrickroad Not getting to use Aeris''s strengths during the hard fights seems a bit unfair since in every other game you were basing characters on how they were during the time they were available and not how they could be in if you could mod them into parts of the game where they are unavailable.
@@rikudaman I have to disagree. Aerith is indeed top-tier if you put in the "unnecessary" grind, and that's what makes her comparison different than... let's say Dark Knight Cecil for example. He's Top tier for time he's in your party and without the need to grind him up. Take Aerith's final LB for ex, while really good, is still a pain to get and is not needed. Most characters in your party already carries the team good enough. Futhermore, there's also no missables or broken items to collect during your journey to make Aerith OP. That being said, yes she is a powerhouse but... is almost like sarcastically saying "Setzer is a powerhouse for his Fixed-dice but he belongs in trash-tier because fixed dice is a final dungeon item." @@rikudaman I understand your point and I see the same broken potential on her Lv2. The game's design during her time is just not challenging enough in such way that Aerith is noticeably that much better than what you already have, which really doesn't make her stand up even if we know what she's capable of. That big WOW factor is just not there during her time. I still believe she is up in the same rank as Cloud if she was a permanent party, given the many challenges later on where she would definitely be the key to many many challenges, however, thats not the case because due to her obvious fate. If she was a permanent party then she would be ubber SS tier.
imo already a mistake in the very beginning when you were doing baseline. there s different frame data with different weapons on all the characters :p pedantic i know.
cyan is the only char in ff6 that can hit 80k damage in a round with no relics at end game tho.....

Setzer is S tier??? hell no. While I agree fixed dice is nice but you get that in WOR which is late in the game. Setzer's slot is almost useless.

Great list but I feel like Kain should be at least A tier. He is fast and easily out damages Edge as well as being able to equip both swords and spears to hit various weaknesses that Edge can't. His jump is also effective from the back row. Edges ninja magic is mediocre at best and he has no elemental weapons aside from the throwing ones plus his defense and magic defense are terrible throughout the time you have him. I do like Edge but Kain is just better.
Also Kain is in the logo so that has to be worth at least a couple points.
@@brickroadbrickroad I have to say I was wrong about one thing in that Edge can use claws for some elemental weaknesses but Kain can use the avenger and defender so still think the dragoon should be at least equal to the ninja, other than that I think the list is pretty good with maybe some very minor tweaks here and there.

Force Armor, Force Shield, 2 Zephyr Capes, bard's hat, Illuminina... NOTHING hits him. Not a single thing. Invicible Edgar, with access to tools? Broken AF. SS certified
Same goes for Tifa... Tifa is the most powerful Tank in any FF game... Long Range Materia, Counter, Cover, Enemy Skill and don't slap any debuffs from green materias on her, Leave her on hyper and just watch her Limit Break every 2-3 battle... SS.
Locke is too high and Celes is way too low. Edgar is also equal if not better than Sabin.
