I agree with the folks at JRPGLife ... wildly criminal that FF16 was voted ahead of Octopath Traveler II. OT2 deserved to WIN and wasn't even nominated. This exact category decision made me lose a ton of respect for the voters attached to the Game Awards.

Every play through I like it a little less but It’s still my favorite ff. Really connected with music characters and junction system. Playing it first as a moody teenager really helped

I’m blown away. When I bought 13 I was probably about 15-18, and I loathed the game. Every single equipment being the same model and simply a reskin was incredibly underwhelming, the combat was alright, and the linearity made it an absolute slog that I quit within the first 20 hours.
I have a hard time believing it’s worthy of going back to! I’ll have to take it into consideration!
If you didn't like the combat you might not enjoy the rest of it, but we sure did!
Similar experience for me. 13 was the first Final Fantasy game I didn't play to completion and walked away from it unfinished. It was a little of everything that bothered me. The story was hard to follow, I hated the characters except the guy with the chocobo in his afro and Vanille, the first part of the game just dragged on too long before the world opens up, the bootleg sphere grid wasn't a good progression system. Most importantly, I hated the combat system. Some years later, I did try to give it another shot and actually finish the game. I tried my best even reading all the lore stuff. I still hated it.

Final Fantasy Tactics is my favorite FF, but mainline would be FF7 due to it being my first. 5 I feel is the most underrated.

Seeing XIII ranked top tier is a surprise, I don’t consider it a bad game, but the story and characters weren’t for me. But I put VI in C tier so I’m used to having my ranking called “hot takes”

Would love for you both to try 14. I never had the ability to play 11 when it came out, and had a bad experience with an MMO prior to 14, but I couldn’t be happier that I have played/play it now. 100% a final fantasy, and you can play solo easily/the party system matches quickly most of the time and a lot of the game is getting the in game characters able to complete dungeons etc with. Amazing! Maybe you play them and just haven’t counted them, I’ve never seen your channel until right now, sorry if you play and I just don’t know!
I used to be a WoW addict so I vowed to steer clear of MMOs moving forward 😅
I totally get that, that’s the only mmo I had played before. I wanted to like wow but always felt behind, I played because you’re supposed to like it, for two years I struggled. I played FFXIV at PaxEast and fell in love with the controller controls (I only play on console outside of my WoW attempt) and the characters and story hooked me like other ff games. It doesn’t require time like I think we think mmos do, designed that way to be able to jump in jump out. Anyway, I must sound like a seller of the game haha it’s just great!
@@JackpotToys Yeah, the thing with XIV is that you can play the entire story solo and not have to ever interact with others if you don't want to. So if you just want that RPG story experience single player style, you can do that.
@@JRPGLife I’m agree. I don’t play MMO RPG for two reasons. There is no real end and I don’t believe in paying a monthly fee after I pay $70-$100 for the game already.
Final Fantasy VI is my favorite game and FFVIII was the first JRPG I ever beat alongside Pokemon.
Just finished the video, great job of breaking down the aspects of each game. First time I’ve heard people who loved the gambit system of ff12 as much as I did! My favourite is 10 with 12 coming ever so close!

My favorites are 10, 7/7R, 8, 15, and 6. For me 10 and 7R have the best combat
FF 10 is my favorite, the story holds a place in my heart, loved the characters loved the combat, loved the story. My least favorite would be probably 15. Also one thing i hate about 9 is the character models. FF8 looks sooo much better then ff9. The combat system in 9 is ehh. But black mage vivie is cool af in 9. Main character in 9 i hate like probably more then every ff character ever. But in saying that I enjoy the story.
Vivi is one of the best FF characters ever 😀

@@JRPGLife Update: I loved it. It's not my favorite but it's in my top somewhere. Vanille and Sazh had some of the most powerful moments in the series. Paradigm system was a nice change of pace. And now, 13-2 is ordered and on the way.

FFVI was my 1st FF game. Appreciate the backstory on VI as I also did the NUMEROUS rentals at BB and I kept dying on the tower (didn’t know about auto-revive😂). Went back later and played origins, chronicles and anthology. I would say VII (along w/ FFT) are my fav followed by VI, and then FFX. I also loved FFXIII. I did find VIII tedious, especially XII…only FF I haven’t finished.
Final Fantasy XIII and XII are amazing games with amazing storylines and if I can add XIV to the mix then these three are my favorites. The sound tracks on both Final fantasy XII and XIII are sooooo good I still listen to them to this day.

While in gameplay and story for 13 and 12 wasn’t to my liking (12 gameplay and story was pretty good. Just not as good as others). I do agree there sound tracks was great. One thing that all ff have is good sound tracks.

As someone with half a tattoo sleeve of FF...Pixel Remaster was a god-send. Even if it was very pricey. Its nice having 1-10, 12 on Switch! FF9 was my first, went back to 7 and hated it since it felt so dated (I was 11) but 7 grew into being my favorite FF and game of all time. Also, FF13 S-tier? That is one hot take haha.
Haha we know it's a hot take, but we really think more people should give 13 a shot 😅
My favorite Final Fantasy is 2 (SNES; IV Japanese) and my least favorite was 8 (PS). I stopped playing Final Fantasy games after 9 (PS) because I just don't like the more open world/MMORPG/Purchase content type games.

As someone who's been wanting to get into the series for a long time, this definitely gives me some ideas on which ones I'd like and which I wouldn't. Great discussion! One question, where would you guys rank VII Remake? (Sorry if I missed that, if it was discussed) Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on how that compares to the original for you (Although maybe it's premature to say since only part one is out)
We didn't include remakes in this list, but we both enjoyed the remake a lot. Personally (Dan) I liked the remake better than the original 😀

this would be my top 7 (I didn't play XI tho and I'm missing quite a lot of the least popular non mainline ones)
7 is literally the best one and is objectively not A and especially not C. The graphics are "bad" because they went with a chibi style, it was on purpose and you can blame retro blurry pixelated games for that inspiration anyway. In combat sequences everything is in correct proportion and in important cutscenes everything is in correct proportion. The game looks fine, if anything the chibi style makes some moments of the game funnier, and 7 is a genuinely funny game. The game in fact has a wide range of tone, it's sad, Zack and Aerith's death are THE most iconic deaths in gaming history, it's suspensful, because of the president's death and the nibelheim flash back, it's metal, giant butcher knife wielding hero, one handed nodachi weilding villain, 2 minute long animation of blowing up solar systems in other dimensions and the knights of the round summon. it's funny in the most uncensored and self aware way. I love how brilliantly funny bait it is that Cloud's fake personality is a parody of trending angsty anime characters. The game also has tons of mini game modes.
I mean the game was designed to be ff6 on steroids. I don't see how you can't put it at S when you have 6 up there.

If you ever want to get a feel for 11 try out HorizonXI. That said, pretty sure only those of us who were on there originally have the requisite stockholm syndrome to really get into it. Such a brutal game.
14 people swear by, and I've put a ton of time into, but its tedium is in all the boring main-line quests and I find the theme-park dungeons really annoying and boring. I really love exploration and 14 really does not have that, where 11 did, but 11 is really hard and you die for trying to explore... haha.
My favorite is snes FF6 or FF3 in NA
And my least liked but enjoyed many tines is ff10 and 10-2 on ps2

Objectively FF VI is the bigger and better FF game, but if you played FF IV first on release in 1991, and know there was no FF game availible until VI in 1994 hats 3 long years. 3 years of only playing FF IV and listenting to its very great and magical OST, since V was never released on the SNES outside of Japan.
3 years is a lot in console terms, when finally FF VI arrived, the PS1 was ready too, to be precise the PS1 arrived as a 32 bit console in december, 1994. The next game in 1995 was allready Suikoden 1, which was similar great in theme and pacing as FF IV - very simlar story(you start at the bad side) very similar OST and a story based on good old fairy tales and myths.
So, if you have this background, there is no way FF IV is not the best Final Fantasy for you, heck i even like Suikoden 1 more than 2. Just because i like the theme, pacing and OST better. And Suikoden II is for Suikoden 1 what FF VI is for FF IV. Basicly bigger and "better".
These games are not really just games, they are pieces of art. Ranking them is a very subjective and delicate thing.

I don't get the complain of FFXVI being _too dark_ to the point of _not being Final Fantasy_ when one of the top tiers games is FFVI which is as dark and could be argued, darker than XVI.
Both games tackle similar _crude_ topics like slavery and the atrocities of war, and in both games magic is not seen as whimsical lighthearted ability, but is rather feared and even hated by some as it's primary use within the setting is being a tool of mass destruction.
But what arguably gives VI the edge are both Kefka and Celes, the first because is without argument the most evil villain the series has ever seen, guy practically is committing a different war crime each time he's on scene (not to mention he kinda won at the end) and the second because not only she has a messed up backstory but also features one of the most infamous scenes in the whole series in which she tries to _off_ herself.
I can get XVI not ranking as high due it's gameplay being divisive, you either love it or hate it, but _deducting points_ for being “too gritty” while VI is on top is a major discrepancy.
Your argument totally makes sense. It's tough to think of retro FFs like 6 as dark, considering the cute sprites and such, but it can definitely be considered dark, contextually. I think the main reason for 16's lower rank is due it barely feeling like a Final Fantasy at all, gameplay-wise. I could see it both ways though!
@@JRPGLife Is not only VI, thematically most mainline games have dark themes to them, FFX story is a romantic tragedy with a more bitter than sweet ending, FFIX starts pretty lighthearted but gets more melancolic as the story progresses to the point it becomes a plot about existentialism (mainly due to Vivi's arc) and like VI and XVI delves into the topic of casualties of war.
Even FFV which is considered as the _goofy one_ of the series features the first perma-death of a main party member.
I have a little bit of a love hate relationship with RPG's. I'm not a huge fan of tactical games, though Persona 5 Tactica was fantastic! Yet again, the only reason I gave that game a chance was because of Persona 5. Most action games are alright, though I prefer a game to be like Zelda since that's my favorite single player game series, especially the older games now. TotK is my least favorite game in the series, but I'm not going to ramble about it now. Turn based stuff I'm very picky about. I don't like random encounters and forced grinding. Those 2 mechanics will make me rage quit. Octopath Traveler maybe a good game, but it has random encounters in that game. I haven't played it since the first battle in the game. Thank God I played it on Game Pass. It's also part of the reason why I haven't played Final Fantasy 7. I got it on Switch, the first part of the game was good, but when I escaped Midgar, you all of a sudden have to grind and there was a bunch of random encounters. I got the remake on PS4, but after playing a few hours in, the PS4 decided to poof out on me and made me delete all my save data. Keep in mind that I didn't have PS Plus at the time, so that save data is now lost forever. I haven't played the Remake at all since I got the PS4 restored, mostly because I've been playing a lot of Mario on the Switch. I love Mario RPG's and Persona 5 because they don't force you to grind and you can avoid enemies if you want to. I think Mario RPG's take things a step forward with the action commands. If you do an action command correctly and superbly, you deal more damage to your enemy, and you can also reduce damage being done to you. From a gameplay perspective, I think this one thing can give a turn based RPG much more depth compared to just selecting an attack. I know Mario RPG's can be super easy, but with how big of a name Mario is, you got to make it easy enough for people who aren't . The video said something about baby's first RPG. That's exactly what Super Mario RPG is. You even have a challenging super boss with Culex, which is a reference to Final Fantasy, for those who want a little more of a challenge.
Dang I’ve never heard of anyone loving either 4 or 6. I loved both. Incredible. Of course I played them in order which helps as you mentioned.

Finally somebody who appreciates FF8 ! Like for me FF7's still the goat! But i don't get the FF9 hype! FF9 was good but i don't think its way better than FF8. And FF9 is not better than FF7 - don't be ridicioulus guys! 😅

I love the palatable growth and character development between zidaine, vivi, steiner, and dagger. The way they engage with each other from the beginning to end is powerful. They each are challenged with redefining (or defining) who they are and come out stronger on the other side.
for me ff6 and ff8 are tied as my fave ff game. ff9 just angered me cos it was a massive step backwards but the worst ff is still ff13. i really tried to like it i got it at release but after many hours of linear bs i just couldnt bring myself to carry on. even tho i know it opens up later its just not worth the boring as fk path you are forced to travel first

I understand FFTA is your favorite. But it has nothing on the OG FFT. Just saying. The first two chapters of FFTA is actually really good. To me they just stacked too many rules on it. Kinda my stand point in Triple triad. Love that card game in the first three regions. After that it got too stupid. Found myself headed back to the first region to reset the rules just to make it enjoyable. Problem is you can’t do that in FFTA. Just saying

Mystic quest was a great entry into Final Fantasy and retro RPGs 😀
FFMQ was my first JRPG. My order in playing the game is FFMQ, FF4, FF6, FF7, FFT, FF5, FF3, FF9, FFTA, FF10, FF2, FF1, FF7DC, FF12, FF13, FFT0, FFX-2, FF13LR, FFBE, FF7CC, FF15, FF7R, FF16 then FF7EC. If you look at my tier list you might will see why it is how it is. Play most of these games in the year they came out in the USA.

10 is my fav. 7 is second. I was the perfect age when 7 dropped I dropped so much time into it as a older teen. I know a lot of it is tied to nostalgia. 6 is my 3rd fav. 8 I never finished until a couple years ago because when I first played it I wanted all the cards and dropped all my time into getting the cards. So it is one of my least fav too many bad memories.

I agree with you on 8 card game. I respect you decision having 10 over 7. At least you didn’t put 7 in c-class. This is the only person I know that doesn’t have 7 at a-class or higher. 🤦♂️

FF8 is very disappointing for me and I Hate Squall so much the story and characters and junction system and FF13 is the Worst Game in the Series for me

Final Fantasy VII or Tactics. Those are my favorites. Hands down.
Favorite so far VII. The first I've ever played. Only made it up to VIII for now, which is honestly the worst so far. The pixel games were fine but nothing special for me. The only exception is VI. Just started playing it today and I'm having a blast. Didn't expect it to be that good aftre being disappointed by I-V. For now it's the second best. But I still have to go through quite a lot of FF games before making a final ranking. What I can say for sure though is that VI and VII are the only ones that are good enough to be worth replaying. At least in my opinion.

Final Fantasy VIII is the most disappointing game I have ever played.
FF X was the first one I played, LOVED IT, So I researched the entire series, FF VIII on paper should of been the best Final Fantasy for me, a love story, teen angst, GUNBLADES, the music!!, better graphics than FF VII on the PS1 but I played it, Disc 1… while quirky, still interesting, such a cliff hanger at the end, the card game was great, confused why the combat is so broken but never the less lol, Disc 2 and the orphanage scene… Utter garbage, maybe a victim of mistranslation but that orphanage scene destroys the game, can’t take anything seriously plot wise after that.
The only saving grace would be if the Squall Is Dead theory was canon cuz it’s the only way it saves the narrative.
I envy you for loving FF VIII, i’ve tried multiple times but i can’t 😔😂🍻

@@JRPGLife Omg LOVE WoFF Maxima, so underrated, should of gotten more love. It’s just a great celebration game of the Final Fantasy series while trying to go after the Pokemon fan base, maybe it’s down fall was just timing, I feel like it’s the best attempt we have had to challenge Pokemon.

ff8 was my first experience with Final Fantasy. I've had the same issue with 7. I would play through disc 1 and just stop. I could never get into it. FF8 and FF9 are my favorite of all time. But I'd say 8 is probably in my top 5 games of all time.

@@JRPGLifealso had the exact same experience with 7 & 8. In fact I never was much of a turn based strategy gamer until someone showed me ff8 in college. Fell in love with it. Rented 7 and was like this is not for me. Whole episode was enjoyable. Tried to get into the rest and just couldn't. 8 all the way.
I have not played that many but my least favorite so far is FF 15

I mostly agree with your list, but FF16 music is very good.
Majority of JRPG are linear, so I don't get why FFXIII got all the hate.
The music and character design are top tier.
My fav FF are FF7, FF8, FF13, FF16
My least fav are FF15 and the 13 sequels

I didn't like the combat system in FF12. Very boring to me. FF16 is an S rank game for me. Characters, Story, presentation, world, combat, music. All 10/10
