18 Months Restoring Our Portuguese Quinta - The Story So Far - #1

  • A lot has happened over the last 18 months here on our small quinta in Central Portugal. From clearing the land to starting a small veg garden to renovating the farmhouse.
Of course, the story of this place goes back much further than 18 months. Before we bought it in October 2020 no one had lived here for almost 20 years.
In this video we’ll travel back in time and give you a brief history of the house and the family that built it as well as showing you what we’ve accomplished in the short time that we’ve called this place home.

@@freedomoverfear9139 Portugal is a very safe country with very friendly people, so no need to be afraid. The interior has lots of land, since the vast majority of the population is concentrated in the coastline, so there's endless opportunity for a bargain.

    Brilliant! Down-to-earth and well presented!
I would like to offer one piece of advice - from someone who bought a 270m² property in Germany with 1000m² of garden:
    Get yourself a Husqvarna!
Cutting the lawn - with multiple trees dotted around - used to take 3 hours of my weekend every fortnight! Although cathartic, it was 3 hours that could have been sorely spent on other activities!
So, if you haven't got a sit-down lawnmower that you love to F1 around your land, then I really suggest getting a good quality robot.
I could monitor and control mine from my phone, and after just 4 days the grass looked like the putting greens at St.Andrew's!
No need for raking, because the mm of grass cut from the top acts as a fertilizer, and so yellow areas quickly turned into a lush green like the rest of the lawn!
It was super quiet and could continue during the night without the neighbours even noticing it!
Rain was also not a problem.
When the battery was getting low, it would automatically make its way back to the charging station, re-charge, and then carry on as before.
You need to lay a continuous 'guide' wire around your perimeter and trees, which takes a while!
But my Huski was one of my better investments!
    Good Luck.

I love your kind of renovation, so respectful, it's especially needed in Portugal, where there are so much properties to sell, and people think of nothing else than villas with pool. And you little camp on wood is an amazing idea! Thank you so much, you're giving me hope, and maybe strength.

Oh, and you don't even need to put branches through the machine, put them directly on the ground, with greenery too, and grow the first year corn and pumpkin, or the kind, the third year it will have become a fine soil. No work. It's an ancient way.

Why do I say that? some of us are old or,physically not able to do what you are doing, or just too poor to even HOPE to do it, BUT the main thing i feel, is you have saved a lot of people from the dark depressing life we have been having due to "COVID"ja little dramatic I realize, but you are a world away, and you come here (youtube) to take us away with you.! My parents were from Portugal. All they talked about was how hard it was to be self-sufficient. All of this reminds me of my parents history. THe wine making, so cool. I have no experience in farming unfortunately, because they emigrated to N america. But I have always found this fascinating. Riding horses, and feeding livestock came natural to me. No one really taught me.

What a beautiful story ☺️☺️☺️. I moved to Portugal in June 2019, not to a quinta, to the city. But my dad uses his garden as a quinta 😁 and my daughter loves feeding the chickens and getting eggs, picking ripe strawberries and oranges, kiwis, lettuce, tomato and mint. I don't have a green thumb, but I appreciate my parents home for all the lovely things that it provides. My dad's siblings live close by and they have different fruit trees in their gardens, so quite often the door bell rings and someone will drop off a big bag of what ever is in season ☺️☺️☺️☺️. I look forward to seeing what you do with your quinta, and your pronunciation of Portuguese words is very good 👍😁👏👏👏👏👏

It's wonderful to see how much you've achieved indoors and outdoors. I think you really chose an absolutely wonderful plot of land. The shape and the location, the fertility, the neighbourhood, its history, all mark it out as something really special. And that's before you even started making your mark on it. Seeing all the drone shots today made clear just how much progress you've made in this short time.
