The funny neighbor said "Somos só dois a comer / somos poucos" = "we're just two eating" (meaning, that's more than enough for them two) and then a classical pt moment were our elders will go and say how small their agriculture products are this year (no matter how big they are, they will always say they're smaller than the previous year). But let me say, I was super impressed with your pt 🚀
I obviously have a way to go with my Portuguese. I thought he added jokingly that the two of them are skinny (so two courgettes are quite enough for them),which seemed to insinuate 'unlike you two' , and then said courgettes gave him the sh#ts. But now I know better ...🥴
Those "missed that one" oversized zucchinis are great to slice lengthwise and use as "pizza dough" - hollow out a bit, fill them with sauce, meat/veg, top with cheese and bake. Delish!
That culture of sharing home grown produce between neighbors is very common in the interior of the country. It's like you said - some people have more of one item, others have more of another, so they share it so that as little as possible goes to waste.
Wow your Portuguese pronunciation is bloody amazing. I’m extremely impressed. He replied this year they are weak, much smaller than previous years. Kudos on your Portuguese.
One thing I've learned from others here on TH-cam about asparagus, is that they tend to take over your beds. A couple places that I researched said that you need to put them in a designated bed, so that they don't take over everything else you have. One person put them in a designated raised bed, and once you plant them, you don't ever have to do it again. They come back yearly without much fuss. :) Love your garden! thanks for sharing it with us! :)
Carrots seedlings ara painful. An old method i learned from my father is to cover with a wood plank and check regularly. The plank will ensure good contact between seeds and soil while maintains moisture well uniform. It's very simple and effective. One you start to see the germination, remove the plank and continue as normal.
I saw a youtube video of a guy sprout them in cornstarch jelly and then he piped them into the rows when they had germinated. I thought that was ingenious.
All my family, for generations, except for my own generation ironically enough, are from places near Sertã. My dad passed away 2 months ago. He must've been the age more or less of your neighbor. So, to hear that pure accent of his really made my day. Great job you're doing. Stay strong.
I am watching this February 2023 and can hardly wait to start on my garden this spring. You have inspired me to try the no dig method on a few things. I have a tiny garden with really poor soil (rocky riverbed) so I think the method will work really well. You two are fun to “hang out with”
Cut the watermelons into slices and freeze - tastes like popsicle! Also works great as a cold treat for chickens on a hot day :) Yes please to a coridal video! What a lovely amazing produce garden, and just the right size for two people to manage. Your garden videos always inspire me to :) thank you for sharing!
You have a very good portuguese accent, congrats! The portuguese farmer has a very thick accent, it should be particularly difficult for non-natives. So, here's some translation from 40:13 on: the portuguese farmer said "enough, we're just two eating [it]" (chega, somos só dois a comer). Then he repeated it. And then he said "we are few" (somos poucos). At 40:25 he said "this year they're not good" (este ano estão fracas). Then he said "last year they were large, this year they're small" (o ano passado estavam grandes, este ano estão miúdas). Then he said "but, my friend, that's what we have" (mas meu amigo é o que cá há). Then he said "there's nothing better" (não há melhor).
One cultural note. "Siesta" isn’t really much of thing in Portugal (except maybe in some towns in Alentejo)... People not being outside doesn’t mean their having a regular nap, most of them will probably just be doing chores inside or just sitting for a while, and if they are old maybe rest when they feel tired. In many small rural villages you would probably see older folk just sitting right next outside their door under a shade talking with their neighbours.
The weed beside the corn is a variety of Crab grass. Keep pulling it out or it will take over. At least it is easy to pull as it has a central fibrous root system. The easiest way is to lift all the leaves around the roots & pull the entire plant out. You shouldn't have to dig around it unless the ground is as hard as a rock.
Love your garden. We are planing a move to Portugal from Ontario, Canada for next year. We are looking in the district of Leiria, Cardavale. My husband is Portuguese, from Alentejo, born and raised. I’m Italian but also quite fluent in Portuguese. Can’t wait to move back there. We are currently house hunting. Trying to decide exactly where. Any advice would be appreciated.
So glad I found your channel. Sitting here at my table in Texas watching and just thinking how much fun it would be to hang out with you two in your garden. Drinking Kylie's cordials of course! Great garden tour you two! Can't wait for the next update!
Your portuguese is quite good, Guy! Very proud of you! Portuguese is a difficult language to learn. Your neighbor was saying that 2 was enough because there are not that many people in his house. And that the courgettes from last year here much bigger. I love following you two and I'm glad you are enjoying our contry.
Tomato-leaf tea works wonders for flea beetles and white flies. Soak tomato leaves overnight in water, drain off and use the tea in a sprayer. Great for many chewing insects; doesn't harm beneficials.
Your pronunciation of Portuguese is amazingly good!!😀 Your garden is huge and everything looks amazing ,wow ,so rewarding I’m sure!!Love watching you guys are amazing and 😆
I'd love to see how you make your cordials, especially the cucumber one :) Roots and Refuge Farm channel has some good tutorials on getting carrots to germinate easily if you want to try again next year. She puts a wooden board over the sowed line to keep the moisture in. I love fresh carrot tops so I like to grow at least a few. I added Celeriac to my garden this year (root celery) and am super excited seeing them grow - though not nearly as well as everything you guys are doing this year. We haven't had much rain in Germany either and I used cheap compost. Lesson learned (hopefully). Stay hydrated!!! :)
Wonderful garden tour Kylie & Guy. There is nothing better than eating your own produce which you know that chemicals were not used, Would love to see you making any type of cordial or any interesting (bottling/canning) ideas with those BIG courgettes :) You are both looking happy and relaxed must be the climate. Better than NZ winter for sure.
Just returned from a 10-day vacation to find some huge courgettes in my garden (eventhough someone was meant to use them in our absence). Made courgette cake with some of it, an absolute family favorite 😊
A good way to stay ahead of your courgettes: pick them when the courgette is about 2 inches long and still flowering. Then dip the whole lot ( courgette with flower attached) in to egg then flour, then pan fry in butter…. Lovely!
Such an impressive garden! It thrived in part because of the large amount of compost you used to enrich the soil, you provided sufficient water, and the third major component was your hard work! Although you did research as needed, you started with a solid knowledge base and you experimented to learn more. As you refine your preservation/storage techniques you will become just about self-sufficient (though indulging yourselves occasionally for little store-bought extras). The long growing season there allows harvesting of some fresh food year-round. Anyone who sees your success and thinks they can just buy a plot of land and live off it should watch your videos from the beginning and understand that it's not that easy!
My grandmother rose before first light, tended her garden every day, harvested every morning, canned and processed straight away and then had an afternoon siesta. Pick squash small -- taste better! And, I think you want to plant the asparagus in a patch
Beans and grains is why you have Thrashing Floor previously built. Now where your Yurt lives. Next year you can build a new one. A Flailing Rod and grain block is what you might consider. It’s loads of fun.
I just finished watching your Summer Garden. In South Africa we call the orange Melon with rough skin (Sweet Melon), the green melon with creamy skin(Winter melon). And obviously the much loved Watermelon
actually I have just comprehended why your channel is giving so much confidence) difference with you is you guys talk to each other, share the talking, it feels so so great safe seeing you both participate in all the moments and like juicing all the seconds of the journey. taking videos together doing and discussing is so involving and does not give me a feeling of being left alone for any of the task like on many other channels I see. Secondly, the feeling from your approaching of doing things is doable and bold, like you can get anything and do slowly but surely and enjoying every bit. feels like a good treatment ))) thanks guys
Try Chinese stir frying the lettuce leaves with a bit of oii, garlic, cooking wine, pepper etc...so glad you installed the drip system which appears to be the superior watering system in your outstanding gardens. Your gardening may be the standard for ex-pats pretty soon!!!
Wow!! A lot of work, but you get wonderful food. I'm not sure how you manage it all!! The building, renovations, digging, planting, weeding, pruning, harvesting cooking, preserving!! YES I'd like to see you make cordial and how you use it. I think it is a sweet flavouring for water or spirits but not sure!! Hugs from 🇨🇦
Great harvest Guy and Kylie. So happy you are enjoying the fruits of your labor and sharing with others. Your Portuguese sounds really, really good. Keep up the good work. 🙏 👍🤗
As for your chickens, I've learned all chickens seem to have an odd trait. If you just put the food in with them, they will ignore it, but if you hang on the fence, the trees, their coop, as well as stake other veggies up so the little buggers can feel like they are really having to rummage for their treats in a tiny forest of goodies, they will eat all the stuff. Placing some just out of reach will make them jump for it. Chickens all seem to appreciate the work it takes to get the goodies in life. I hope that works for you because they are missing out on so many good things. Chickens, huh? 😁
The flowers of the pumpkins or squash and zucchini are also edible. Are you going to do mushrooms? Different types of corn, lettuce, herbs etc. ? Fennel, celeriac and eggplant would possibly grow lovely there. In OZ there is a citrus bush that would grow nicely there I think it’s called citrus caviar? Or something? Loving the garden. Love the humour and laughter even more.
Hi Kylie and Guy. Talking about lettuce for your Ckooks!! To get brilliant orange yolks feed them silverbeet. I used to grow silverbeet in between my flowers as we had no room for a veg garden. Our local Coles super market used to keep all the lettuce leaves that customers striped off the lettuce as rubbish but every Thursday my chooks would be at their gate for the silverbeet!!! All the best from Brisbane Australia ❤️❤️
Also guys with your pumpkins and squash pick when ripe or leave in the vine but put some hay or straw underneath them. We had a huge grey pumpkin that we left at our back door for about 5 years and when I made pumpkin and bacon soup it had the most beautiful flavor and very dry inside. You could grow all your pumpkins, marrow water melon on your rubble pile. Free space and then you can use your garden for other veg. My dad used to grow pumpkin and melons on an old compost pile. ❤️❤️❤️
Amazing garden! Not sure if you thought about it or not, but be careful with planting bell or sweet pepper next to other hot peppers and chillies :) they can interbreed because of the pollinators. I made that mistake once and only found out there was a mistake to be made when I prepared a stuffed bell pepper that removed the roof of my mouth it was so spicy hahahahaha
I was told by a very experienced Gardener that the carrots do not like Rocky soil at all. So if they’re deformed they’re hitting pebbles or rocks and growing around them I was told the plant them and Sandy soil. if you poke a hole with say an obelisk shape stick , making a hole for the sandy soil that shape it’ll grow to the shape. Like the channel thanks very much bye
In the U. S. Our orange orchards are suffering a blight, unfortunately that is what happens with a mono culture. Your lucky to have older varieties. You may be able to sell the seeds. I especially love the tree with many varieties.
Every year there is one crop that is overwhelmingly productive this year it was lettuce so we send people away with bags of it and a kohlrabi. You folks are loaded with your hard work production.
If you have green chilies , garlic and onion I thoroughly recommend Nam prik num, a green chili dip from the North of Thailand. Here in Melbourne I make it about every 2 months and the family (who are Thai) love it; you can 'water down' the heat by adding green capsicum but be careful it is addictive!
Wonderful Video Absolutely beautiful and prolific garden, How amazing is it that the 2 of you have done all of this in 20 months!!! BRAVO for you. The squash flowers are amazing sautéed in a pan with little olive oil. I also stuff mine with some nice soft goat cheese. You can also cook the squashes that are very small with the flower still attached a nice sautéed dish as well. I keep thinking you need a small milking goat to eat your extra food and provide you with some nice milk. Thank you both so much I really enjoy your channel.
Just today I saw a couple put a few layers of cardboard over carrot seeds to keep them wet, the same man always carries salt in his pocket for tomato snacking:)))
Fab tour guys!! Carrots ~ grow in plain soil with only addition being some sand. No fertilizer, manure or compost. They will grow long and straight and prolifically!! Along with the rock melons, we’re the others the Honeydew variety perhaps?? And don’t forget to mound your asparagus up to get lovely long spears. Great work 👍 👋 🇦🇺
I just watched a video that showed huge onions inter planted with peppers...evidently they love each other and did the best with the peppers and irrigation!
Just going through all your videos and love that your vegie garden is just so abundant. Well done on your efforts you two - amazing what you've achieved in such a short period! My climate here in NSW is the same - mild winters and hot summers in the 30s and 40s, so I'm taking a particular interest as even though I'm now retired, I still grow my vegies - couldn't imagine not! Re: your carrot problem - sow your seeds and only just cover them with compost, gently water in, lay a board of timber over the top and keep the immediate area watered. Seeds usually germinate within 7 to 10 days and appear flattened, spindly, white and yellow, and rather sad. But fear not... just prop the board up a bit higher day by day over a week so that the row is still protected, and keep it well watered. Give it a go! Have been debating whether to mention this but I dont want you to possibly lose your blueberries - one can't actually make acidic compost (without additives), because no matter how much acidic materials are added, the very process of composting will always turn them ph neutral. All compost is generally within the 6 - 8 range so perhaps best just to put all that citrus in the centre of your hot pile - preferably cut up. But given you have pine bark paths, you might want to try this - I have blueberries in large grow bags and because I top up my pine bark paths each year I just take some which is still in the process of decomposing - it'll be acidic. All the best, keep up the good work and I can't wait to see all those pumpkins - a pretty impressive patch I must say!
I agree. I was very impressed with your Portuguese and you nailed the accent as well.
Agree. Very impressed with you pt accent 👏👏👏

Yeah, agreed! Your Portuguese accent is on point, great job :)
@@jul7291 you really do have a way to go with Portuguese. He didn't say any of that, not even close. But keep working on it!
Those "missed that one" oversized zucchinis are great to slice lengthwise and use as "pizza dough" - hollow out a bit, fill them with sauce, meat/veg, top with cheese and bake. Delish!
Ohh, that’s our kinda thinking. We don’t have an oven but I’m sure it will still work in a baking dish in the bbq 😃
@@MAKEDOGROWit sure works on the barbie.
"Red Hot padrão peppers" sounds like a Portuguese tribute band...
😂🤣😂🤣

Came here to say just this. Takes half as long for germination, too.
I saw a youtube video of a guy sprout them in cornstarch jelly and then he piped them into the rows when they had germinated. I thought that was ingenious.
Who knew you could make cucumber cordial. Very interested to watch that video. Another great walk through your organised garden.
Yes please, on a cordial video. This was a really special video. Thank you.

The garden videos are so nice and relaxing to watch while working . No hammer drill noises and its super peaceful.
Don’t worry, more hammer drilling coming soon 😂
Dad always said keep wet burlap over the carrot seeds. Check every day. When the shoots appear take the burlap off. 🇦🇺🎸⚡️🤘🏿🤘🏼💋❤️

Hey guys great video, a little tip for growing carrots I use a cup or so of sand mixed with the seeds to help separate the seeds .

Man! You just speak like a native. Very good pronunciation. Great work u 2. Everything wonderful and juici ❤️ keep it up. 🔨🍀💪

Tomato-leaf tea works wonders for flea beetles and white flies. Soak tomato leaves overnight in water, drain off and use the tea in a sprayer. Great for many chewing insects; doesn't harm beneficials.

Also, your Portuguese pronunciation is VERY good! 👍🏼
It shows you your way doing the raised beds works and keeps water in.
Please make a cordial video!
I feel so gratified watching your hard work, I can only imagine how you feel. Thank you!
Yess! Would like a cordial video! Great haul of produce! 😍
Always enjoy your videos.
In the dig garden it’s best to dig down and loosen the dirt at least a foot. Roots will do better.
Great tour. Good harvest. Very kind of you to give away your excess.
Awesome video as usual. I vote for a cordial making video. 👍
Great video and colors!
3 sisters would be lovely in the corn patch😊
Sieve the soil finely for the carrots and add something like 50% sand to it...and your carrots will be perfect.
Also cover the sown rows with a board/ fence paling to keep moisture constant. Around the 2 week mark, check regularly for germination then remove.
Love this veg garden tour! 🤩Another vote for making Cordial vid😃
I think it’s fantastic how you all share your produce, makes good neighbours. Best wishes from Australia
When harvesting the watermelon, save the rind and make watermelon rind pickles. Delicious!!
Yes on the cordial-making video question. 🙂
well done
I love your videos

I just finished watching your Summer Garden.
In South Africa we call the orange Melon with rough skin (Sweet Melon), the green melon with creamy skin(Winter melon). And obviously the much loved Watermelon
That irrigation system is tempting me! I need something to keep my plants moistured. Amazing garden, congratulations 👍
Yes cordial recipe!!! What a beautiful garden!

Mashed mix of potatoes and beets is super yummy. And beet leaves in stir fries is yummy!
Just today I saw a couple put a few layers of cardboard over carrot seeds to keep them wet, the same man always carries salt in his pocket for tomato snacking:)))
I have garden envy ! Your garden is gorgeous, I love it. Ya'll did an awesome job this year. Keep up the good work.
Looking fabulous 👌....yes please to cordial video 👍👍👍👍👍
Fab tour guys!! Carrots ~ grow in plain soil with only addition being some sand. No fertilizer, manure or compost. They will grow long and straight and prolifically!! Along with the rock melons, we’re the others the Honeydew variety perhaps?? And don’t forget to mound your asparagus up to get lovely long spears. Great work 👍 👋 🇦🇺
I just watched a video that showed huge onions inter planted with peppers...evidently they love each other and did the best with the peppers and irrigation!
Yes please for the cordial video.
THANK YOU!! Always entertaining and enlightening.
Yes Kylie, I’d like to see a video on making cordials!
I'm with you Kylie, Rockmelon it is 😃 I'm envious of your lovely sunshine, it's been such a cold WET winter here in Sydney.
Your garden is amazing! 😊. I would love to see a cordial video.
