You don't need to kill your spirits to farm rare materials. Certain Special Portals give you certain rare materials at different rates. If you fail to get the one you're looking for you can soft reset and do it again till the material drops. It's quicker and you don't have to kill your spirits.

Manega into dark aura-room buster. I’ve tried this combo with dark splicer, the tracking is ass tho especially if the enemies are floating around your manega. Dark aura is the key
Also while its true that you can do this, make sure to have more of the material in order to get a higher rank. I also think that if you're on standard you don't have to get the higher ranks, just get the first one that you can. For example on my first playthrough I got a Sir Kyroo on rank B and he was insane for me.
My Spirits : Chef Kyroo (Sora), Disposition : Pâtissier / Lord Kyroo (Riku), Disposition : Empiricist Majik Lapin, Disposition : Spark Jockey R & R Seal (as the sub), Disposition : Show-off. Those are for me the best spirits, as Majik Lapin gives you Dark Shield, Chef Kyroo gives you Cura, all of that at the start of the game. Don't forget a temporary Ryu Dragon for Super Glide and there ya go ! Plus, R & R Seal gives plenty of HP Boosts and status blocks, as well as Second Chance, Majik Lapin is a good healer, in addition of eventually casting Auto-Life, same for the Kyroos, who all have good support spells. Don't forget the bigger the spirit is, and the bigger its hitbox will be, so they aren't the best option against bosses. Commands : Firaga Burst, Zero Graviza (if that's a regular battle), those are imo the best main commands as Firaga Burst uses plenty of fire balls homing at the enemy.
In addition just because a spirit is big doesn't mean its the best. In harder difficulties the kind you want are the ones that, when all three are in your party, give you all HP Boosts, all Defense boosts and all Magic haste stat abilities as these abilities are contingent on your dream eaters. I go Frootz cat (4 attack and magic haste stat abilities), Ryu Dragon (HP boosts and attack boosts as well as the superglide ability), and the third would either be Majik Lapin or Kab Kannon depending on what I want buffed more at any given time (Lapin buffs Magic and Kannon buffs defense).

I have a star rank Tatsu Blaze that I made in the beginning that has always been in my team she gives both attack and magic haste lvl 3 i gave my gf Keeba Tiger so she gets healed and doesnt die and last one for her is Lord Kiroo but i swapped Keeba for Ryu Dragon
Any Support abilities, (combo plus, second chance, leaf bracer) stay permanently once unlocked. Same thing with Spirit abilities, (link crit, support boost, waking dream). Stat abilities do not. (HP boost, magic haste, poison block)
Gladius my opinion. It doesn't matter. Basically having a higher Ranking Spirit gives you better stats. I beat the game on Critical with Level C's and B's. Really, if you're good enough at the game play wise and you play smart, you don't need to worry about High Ranking Spirits
Just a tip, Kab Kannon doesn't drop Brilliant Fantasy in the 2.8 version (Drops Epic Fantasy instead), however Keeba Tiger drops Brilliant Fantasy now. Also great video :D

Not in the early game no, but you don't need those materials in the early game cause you don't have those recipes either.

Dark Splicer prevents from being knocked away. It's a safe version of Dark Aura if you want.
