Bartender is cleaning glasses
"Let's kill him"
This happens every session we have and end up getting chased out of town before we can even utilize it
played for the first time yesterday..... bartender poured me an ale and then asked for cash. Put the dude to sleep with a spell.... DM (as the serving girl) asked "aren't you the court wizard? why didn't you just put it on the kings tab?" and i felt so stupid but it was a really fun time. DM made an entire campaign in 10 minutes that lasted about 5 hours and ended with us saving a trapped dragon, and through some weird roles i randomly got a goblin sidekick named roger that wears a chest as a helmet...... it was an amazing time.
I just played Dungeons and Dragons for the first time...2 of the most reckless players killed the bartender.

Brand-new players - “There’s the old man selling the mysterious map... Let’s kill him!”
I swear, murder-hoboing is just in the DNA...
Who in there right mind would pay 30 gold while being level one? I would have killed him if I were them, after paying him and tailing him to see if he ends up in a more secluded area. (Though this might be something that only I would do.)
As a DM I shut this crap down quickly.
"Let's kill him."
"KILL ME?!?" the old man shouts. Five of his associates step out of the shadows, their drawn blades glinting in the dim light.
Roll for initiative.
Problem is, the risk reward for killing the dude is too high. He takes a ton of money and vanishes while giving you a map that might not be correct. Killing him eliminates any negative affect from the map being fake, and might lead to more rewards. The risk of getting caught by do guards is pretty low, considering that he is a random adventurer. Your way of deterring it, though fun, would still lead to the same outcome of the dude being killed and in the worst case scenario could also discourage communication in the party (Especially cause there noobs). Then again, the suggestion coming up in the party at all means you probably have a few evil people (Like me >:) ) and you'll quickly get used to 'evil' solutions.
You are misunderstanding. In the scenario I outlined, they would not have killed him. They would either talk their way out of it, or they would have died. The point of this lesson is to teach the players to stay in character, and that off-handed comments can have consequences.
Players that constantly want to kill nonviolent NPCs are annoying AF to play with, and even worse to DM for. This guy's a noob, so I would hope I could break him of that habit really early.
Dudes not a noob I think, everyone else around him is. I completely agree that players killing nonviolent NPC's is extremely annoying most of the time, but when the situation is one in which it would be the best decision, it is at least worth considering with the party.
And in a situation in which they were beginning to consider killing the NPC, the NPC finding out might end up rushing there decision and make them kill him anyways. Best way (in my opinion) would be to make it generally difficult to kill him without alerting other people, like by surrounding him with his friends/fellow adventurers.
"I can cast any one of these spells right, on the list?"

The rogue rolled not only awesome stats, but despite being new, she strikes me as a very smart player.
and has the most powerful role in 5e
Depends on GM and the campaign on how you can use sneak attacks. Otherwise full caster classes are arguably more powerful.
I've played games with smart gals who are happy to show it because nobody appreciates it the rest of the time. They do tend to be the party face, so CHA-based rogue is spot on I think.
I just feel really sorry for the cleric. I think the rogue got all of her good dice. This is why I lean toward point buys.
Except she put an 11 into INT.... that is not very smart.
@@mal2ksc Agreed. I hate random ability generation. Point buy is the way to go for me.
This is not only a good introduction to new players but also a great example for DM to explain things to new players. its shorter than critical role and i like that it not only maintains the idea of D&D for classic players but has a something i can show new player in my games so yes please continue making these.
Well they were just making characters this episode
It's also edited, while Critical Role is a live stream. And Critical Role isn't meant to teach people how to play. Though it does actually do so quite well.
The whole series is on Alpha I believe. I think this was the first episode but I think they played other games besides DnD. Don't know if they put this up as a teaser or if they are planning on putting the rest on youtube or not.

Hal: I’ll talk to him, I’ve got fairly decent Charisma.
Carmel, sitting there with an 18 Charisma: ...
Isnt it dickish tho to hog all the conversations to the highest charisma guy? Then she might as well be the main character.
@@Jebu911 I concur. Also when you script conversations it's usually a good idea to consider other abilities that add up to the persuasion skill; so the highest charisma guy may be the best at talking to commoners, but not automatically the best at convincing wizards, scholars, priests, craftsmen, etc...
Hi, I'm a halfling with 18 charisma. How about 3 gold for the map?
@@Jebu911 It's not dickish, if your character is gabby and prone to flapping at the jaws (read, high CHA score) then they WOULD be talking more, just as sure as the guy with the highest STR will be the one who moves boulders out of the way for you and do other things that their characters are better at. That doesn't mean that the other people can't talk though, a good DM will allow players to do whatever they wish to try even if they have an 8 CHA score they can always try to talk and hope for a 20. But generally speaking the high CHA character may as well be known as the "main character", although I like to call that the face of the party. It doesn't mean that person should boss everyone around or whatever, not by any means, it just means that they're the go to guy when it comes to "talk situations".

@@loogmm Her teeth? Wow. She is a musician. Productive band with her sister. From her appearance on Table Top, she seems extremely smart and a great sense of humor. But yeah.... go all out superficial dude.
Well, its up to the DM to allow such a poor overall roll. Having low stats can make for great roleplaying though.
Yea because you can control what the dice do...
@@PB8man no, but you can control what you allow as a DM. If she had rolled 3 superb stats (aka 18 17 14 or something like that) and 3 bad stats (such as 8 7 7) it would still be ok but her stats in general were absolutely shit.
When you are DM'ing in 5e you have a choice to allow for rolling the stats or the basic build up of 15+14+13+12+10+8. The latter in my mind being most useful for one shots, not for prolonged campaigns.
If the choice is to roll for stats I would at the very least still want to see the total of the dice rolls be over 72 (the sum of the basic stat buildup) or allow a reroll. Her total amounts to 61 and that is well below average (she rolled 7+7+8+11+13+15).
Remember, you are basically playing heroes, having decent stats enforces that idea. To play a slightly flawed hero with some low stats can be super fun but should also be at least somewhat balanced so you can contribute to your party.
My first DM was similarly helpful, inviting, and accepting. It's a big reason why I continued with the hobby. DnD community members who are open and helpful to newcomers make the hobby special. The first few times I played I had people staying an hour after with me answering questions, giving pointers, just talking shop. Made a world of difference. Those people who stayed late? They're now my out of shop-homebrew group

Great job. I started in D&D with the 1st edition books, still have them actually. My uncle gave them to me. He set me and my cousins down with paper, pencil, and dice (much to our parents' dismay as D&D had a rather bad rap in the 80's) That was it. But we had great imaginations as well. He walked us through character creation and a very fun campaign over 5 years. It was epic, I miss doing that, so this was a treat for me. Thank you so much for doing this and introducing people to the game

The half elf player knew that he can add 2 on charisma and +1 on 2 different stats but the dm said to only one. Don't rob that poor half elf....
I'm glad I'm not the only one that caught that, the DM even said "you get a +2 to charisma, AND a plus 1 to TWO other stats" then three seconds later he said "no it's only +2 to CHA and +1 to ONE other stat". I think he confused himself, an honest mistake, but it still bugs me.
I always thought it was a little overpowered for the Half Elf to have a +1 to two scores.
I've been playing D&D for over 30 years. Started with the old basic boxed set, and expert boxed set, onto AD&D then 2nd ed, 3rd, avoided the edition that shall not be named and dabbled in 5th. I've ran many campaigns and created many worlds of my own. So I know how to play D&D, but I still get excited over these tutorials, because it is so exciting to see new people learn and get into the game. Every campaign I run, I try to get one person that has absolutely no experience with D&D or roleplaying games. People who don't know all the standard methods of everything we have learned to do over time. New players are the best.

that cleric rolled awful stats.
I legitimately would have refused to play that character. That's the idiot savant cleric who refuses to leave the church to heal. Not wishing to speak ill of those clutch NPCs, but it always sucks to be stuck with a character that is considerably less potent then point buy.
Depends on the game, really. With a noob GM, I'd strongly suggest Point Buy. Someone with some experience can probably keep things working. If the GM is just going to grab fights from a book or roll them, them yeah, better to keep an even power level.
Yeah i'd request a reroll. If i were the DM i would immediately tell the player to roll the whole set again. Then again, were i the DM, i'd have everyone go point buy anyway.
So you are a bad player. I understand that as a player you want the best player. But honestly the best players are often built off of low stats, not the best stats. I had a friend who had a thief with a very low charisma and this helped make his character. He was evil and had a horrible facial scar.
Not wanting to play a character with garbage stats does not make a bad player. Playing with bad stats is absolutely legit, and I would never tell anyone not to do it if they want to try, but they should know that some players have rolled significantly better stats and that their result is WAY below average and that they have the chance for a do-over.
If you wanted to play as a capable and competent adventurer, a bad roll ruins even that very basic concept.

That campaign ended when we left the final boss the campaign was building up to stranded on a desert planet with absolutely no way off...
That DM still hasn't forgiven us for doing that.
I feel like the DM is moonlighting as the vocalist for a Motörhead cover band
he _is_ a musician.
Nighthawk I fucking knew it
Holy crap, is that Mixi from Stitched Up Heart?! Rad band, cool person. Got me excited to watch this for sure.
So I’m not sure if your even going to see this but none of my friends are
Into D&D and was wondering how I would get into it...or how I could get people to play?
In internet there are lots of online games and its easy to enter yo one of these so... Good Luck
How the hell did you get a group when you were ten I’m 12 and I’m having the hardest time
Things were different back then I suppose. Not much to do compared to today.
He grew up in the 80’s
Who knew the dad from Lab Rats liked DandD
I was wondering why he looked so familiar...
logan williams THATS WHO HE IS THANK YOU
logan williams wait.....
Yoooooooo wtf thats who he is
I see no lab rats comments in this, howwwww!? Its mr. Davinport
Brigham omg I never noticed that lmao
Ikr? First thing that came to my mind was that
When the DM started to tell the opening story I got goose bumps, don't know why. Seems like a good story teller and probably a really good friend in the real world.
Y’all talking about Lab Rats but not Queer as Folk
Thank you SO much for this! I've always wanted to do some DnD, and this realy helps me understand what's going on with everything. I'll definitely be using this as a source of reference for the future, and I want to thank you for making these videos.
For the second fighter, while making the stats for the half-elf, it's +2 cha and +1 to two ability scores right? Unless the PHB lies, he should've been allowed to get two 15s.
Yes it is +2 to charisma and -+1 to two different other stats modifying your ability a score rolls.
Yes it is two ability scores. However JCM is DM soooo his word is the law.
Making an error is different from purposefully homebrewing. It's not a huge deal, since it's just for a video
in the end having that 15 does nothing for him, but yes I had to check it up, but half-elves do get that +1 to two stats
Also note that Hal did not argue, even though his face may be betraying some emotion... but not arguing is a key skill. :) (note: argue after the session ;) or at least get clarification)
I played my first D&D in 1980 .
Did go not well as I was killed by a giant purple worm :(
The years passed as did the playing … the stories continue .
Have you gotten revenge on that damn worm?
Schnot taking that sad face emoji he used... I don’t think he got his revenge?
My friends and I are starting a campaign this summer and it’s a lot of our first experience with DnD and this is helping me figure out so much
The cast is so awesome in this! They all seem genuine and interested in their characters. Also a great intro to d&d, covering the basics of stats and creating an intersting history for each toon. P.S. Mixi of course you get the hot miniature!
32:06 Oh man look at the lovely dwarf Th'ump'ar, he seemed so impressed with the atmosphere and what they are doing, I already love that guy!
When Hal Sparks walked in I was like "i know that guy from somewhere" then I was like DAVENPORT FROM LAB RATS! Do you know this reference?
I wish I can play this. Sadly I cant find anyone who plays in my neighborhood and I dont know how.
This is a nice video
Same here, just moved to Oklahoma and I'm looking
Wow, I feel like this issue is common for players... I mean, only me and a good friend of mine are into DnD in our respective areas... so yeah, this is a problem.
I saw Angela and I was like:
Yeeeeaaaah...
Cleric.
Is that mr. Davenport from that disney show lab rats
I first got introduced to D&D when I saw Stranger things. I like rpgs, my favorite ones are skyrim and the witcher series. I really wanna play this game but my friends don't even know what an RPG is.
(My friends too) :(
Facebook. Check for groups or cafes where they play and then get involved.
Even if you're new I don't think you should have a pre-generated character. What was fun for me was coming up with who my character is. You have no connection to your character when you haven't created them.
In the Elven language Quenya, "Moon Blood" is "Isil Sercë"
Why do I want to play with Betty White as dungeon master?
I'm learning to DM, how to I convert the rolls for stats into +s for rolls?!
3 is -4
4-5 is -3
6-7 is -2
8-9 is -1
10-11 is +0
12-13 is +1
14-15 is +2
16-17 is +3
18-19 is +4
20-21 is +5
And it continues in the same pattern if needed.
Nice work, Garthok.
Party on Garthok
I am so glad there is a video of this because I always wanted to play D&D but I do not have friends and everyone says its so complicated so I am glad there is a video I can watch and feel a part of. Thank You!!!
The game has always been a curiousity to me. It is the sort of game I'd LOVE to play.
However there's two (three) things that stop me...
One, it intimedates me. It looks complicated and as a complete newbie, I have NO idea where to even start.
and TWO... I have no friends, let alone friends who'd play with me... I'm being serious about that. I could go make some or join a club, but my social anxiety says otherwise.
But, this video has convinced me that I would love the game. I love imaginative pieces, having made my own magical world up for my stories. I hope I get the opportunity to play this game some day, it looks like a lot of fun!
Wow you took all the words out of my mouth! I really want to try it but I don't think I will ever get chance
Used to be comic book stores that had all of the books, die etc., and also had info on signing up for D&D groups. Usually those shops where in college towns.
@@no-bi2wg I wonder if there's some kind of "online" version that people like us could play? But at the same time, a lot of the experience is how the story is told, so I'd rather real people in real life, making a fantasy adventure.
@@Jeloni2 Maybe they still exist? D&D is a popular game still, although I don't think it's AS popular as it used to be. There is shops that would have information, like shops selling trading cards or pop culture/comic book shops. That is a good place to find information. Also, the internet might help.
I've since asked a friend to play, and he said yes, but we are both still unsure of what to do, etc, and we need other people...
Even libraries used to have them, so keep looking. Or start your own group. Study these TH-cam videos and you might become the Dungeon Master!
I haven't played 5e, do you not roll percentage die on an 18 strength to determine your percentile? Seemed like the fighter should've put his 18 into strength not dex, but like I said I have no experience with 5e
Is that the guy from that one Disney XD show Lab Rats?????
As an RPG curious individual, this was perfect for me. I felt like I was learning a few things that appear more complicated in other D&D/RPG shows
