    Strength = how hard one can throw a tomato.
    Dexterity = how well one can dodge a tomato.
    Constitution = how much it hurts when a tomato hits you.

      Tomato is vegetable in a vegetable vs.fruit sence. Comfusion comes from lack of words to differenciate two meanings in english
      In my language we have different words for "fuit" 1. Fruit="ovocie" Like apple, orange , strawberry, not tomato!!!
      2.Fruit="plod" Seed-bearing structure that develops from the ovary of a flowering plant. (here can be tomato)

      Furthermore, if such a thing as a god exists, I hope it wouldn't be as callous, petty, childish and vain as to require the adoration of a random species of talking primates on a random planet orbiting a random star near the edge of a random galaxy. I'd also assume this entity would have far more important things to worry about than said primates' genitalia, or who they want to share their lives with, or any number of other completely inconsecuential things these creatures could do.
      In short, if there actually is a god, I sure as hell hope it's not the Christian/Jewish/Muslim one (they are all the same, by the way, originally known as Yahweh), because if it is, then this life truly is nothing but a sick joke.

    Originally I was going to do this as one video, but editing time and the overall length convinced me to split it up. It should be a 4 part total series, I may do a super condensed 5th video, that covers the basic steps of character creation without any explanation BUT I feel that it's important to try and EXPLAIN certain things so people understand what they are actually doing.
    Hopefully this series will help, sorry it has to go out 1xday. As always, please do feel free to leave feedback (good and bad) to help me improve! :)

      @danielcastillo591 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@commandercaptain4664 It's less about presence and more about your way of interaction and capacity for both genuine conversations or deceptive deeds
      Charisma means being intimidating, being charming, being convincing, basically plenty forms of portraying yourself the way you want to
      For example, someone shy with high char might be a sweetheart that can win your heart if they were to try, or they speak eloquently whenever they decide to do so
      A non charismatic rogue would mean a rogue without these abilities, meaning you earn and lose some aspects about the whole "sneaking around" kind of ordeal
      Think James Bond for a high char rogue, and agent 47 as a low char rogue

    I love your approach, I often find myself compelled to look at classes first, then at the races and then all the other stuff. Yes, I have a history of being a min-maxer in DnD, yet I do agree that concept far outweighs stats and feature, even though I love all the rules grinding. I feel that 5e actually turned over a leaf for being less rulesy and more open to interpretation. It is more about why your character is than what he is or how he does things, the classic - Why, how and then what approach.
    If I were to give a suggestion (Save DC 15), it is to actually look at character backgrounds before anything else, at least if you want to avoid min-maxing and making a stereotypical robot of a character like I used to do - Unless you play a warforged, that method doesn't bring out alot of character, and even then it would be a pretty soulless living construct even if you were to play a min--maxed warforged :P

      The only thing that i'd say to improve now, but it's minor, is to get some sound bites in there. So maybe a swiping sound for a lower third and some thuds for the lists. Also some song for the outro/intro. Not fully informed on this stuff and it would probably cost money although i know there are free alternatives. Still, something to keep in mind and it's only minor ;)

    You are absolutely correct about below ten stats. One can build characters around the flaws and weave them in his story instead of complaining he was dealt a bad hand. Here are some numbers I just got while rolling a new character: 8, 16, 7, 15, 8, 16. You have the flexibility to either play a frail Spellcaster with high INT/WIS/CHAR or like I just did go Half-Orc Barbarian and get STR 18, DEX 16, CON 16, INT 7, WIS 8, CHAR 8. Waaaaaaaagh!!!!! This is a terrific series of videos. Thank you very much for making them.
    I am getting back into the D&D hobby after being away for 20 years - work, kids, life, etc., took priority over gaming. Needless to say the rules are a bit different from the days of THAC0!
    These videos explained very well how to create a new character.
    Oh another change from the last time I played D&D, this time I am teaching my daughter how to play.
    Peace.

    I'd like to say I want to play a half orc monk that doesn't speak orcish. My character was found as an infant in a time of war. The group that found me felt guilty about leaving a baby in a war zone so they left me at a monk shrine. Seeing the potential of me, rather than teach a half orc the ways of shadow they went with way of fist school of teaching. My character has a human name which brings looks of scorn from the townsfolk whenever he gets sent for supplies for the shrine. Having never seen another orc or half orc I'm unfamiliar with the customs or language but am aware of the orc god with one eye. He also enjoys tea over ale & mead. While he enjoys meat, if there is a plant option he'll take it. I'm sure I'll think up other stuff too but that is what I have right now. What do you guys think?

    • @Balthazar2242
      @Balthazar2242 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      All the detail is ok but Id focus on what actually makes it to the table. What drives your decisions? What is your attitude?
      Having an exhaustive backstory is fun, but it's more practical for role play to have a general attitude in mind. For instance, "My character wants to get STRONG and every choice he makes is based on that" is easier to play than "my character's father died in her arms while he said 'follow your heart, my love'".

    Yay, more videos ^.^
    It's all stuff that I've personally read up on in detail already, but even so I still find them very good watching, and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of these as they come out!
    One comment for this first part was that i had thought it might have been good to mention the other most common methods of deriving your base ability scores; I'm assuming though, that you considered it and opted not to for the sake of not over-complicating?
    I know that some players still prefer to roll up using the harsher straight 3d6, rather than 4 drop 1, but most people I've chatted with about it in recent weeks have all trended towards favouring the point buy system. I suppose that's mostly because it protects against cripplingly bad stat rolls, but with more flexibility than the standard array?
    For our group, with our DM warning us that we were fresh players going into what was a fairly difficult campaign, we opted to use a 'gentle' method of deriving initial stats; we rolled dice, but agreed in advance that if the final set was dangerously low or unjustifiably high, to scrap the dice and use point buy instead; no re-rolls, just one chance take or leave, and then switch to the system if they weren't acceptable. We also used an extended cost range for the system, to expand the bracket by two in each direction, so players that did opt to use the 27 points, could by down to 6 (for one point back for each point below 8), and up to 17 (at a cost of three points each for 16 and 17, in line with the increasing point curve); this gave more flexibility if the characters were notably uneven (My halfling is quite frail, and very weak physically; she's tiny even by halfling standards, so having a 6 Str and 8 Con suites her character well, despite the dangers that the latter poses.), but the expense of the higher points outweighed the gain from taking lower ones, so you paid for the extra free flexibility by ending up with an overall weaker character, by raw point value. Overall we're happy with the way it worked out for everyone; one player kept his rolls, two of us switched to point buy, and one of us used the standard array scores.
    Our DM has also decided to be generous to us in terms of rolling HP each level; we can choose to take the average, or we can roll, but he's said that if anyone chooses to roll and gets a 1, they can take the average instead. There's still a risk in choosing to roll, but the very worst case scenario is averted. Those of us with a negative con mod *cough*, are particularly grateful for that concession...
    Still, a handful of sessions in and our group got out of death house mostly intact and without any player deaths yet (mental stability and nightmares non-withstanding ), which our DM informed us was quite unlikely, just by the odds, so we're all feeling quite excited ^.^
    Looking forward to the next installment of these videos, thanks for making them Mark!
    -Erica

    • @SherlockHulmes
      @SherlockHulmes  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Erica,
      Yeah as this was intended for "first timers" I didn't want to discuss point buy as it is a bit confusing, likewise the "stats aren't good enough, re-roll instead". I think the Standard Array is a good backup for anybody who rolls really bad stats, and as it's a set thing, it's easier for new players to understand.
      I usually do the "You can roll or take half" method for HP too. It's a nice risk vs reward element.

    Honestly.... I rarely actually PLAY a game. But I spend many hours making characters. Most of them will never see the light of.... a table.... but I love making them. I also am part of a short story writing group, so use the characters in that. Even the PC games - I'll fire up a D&D or Fall Out etc just to make the starting character. Then wipe it. For me, the creation is the main attraction. And I LOVE going counter to intuition - I want an Orc Wizard or an Elf Barbarian etc. Mess them up, put them in a messed up environment and play.... so much more fun than ... Well, vanilla Harry Potter "You are a really good wizard at a really good wizarding type place"....

    Secondly (and most importantly) would you happen to be an Eddie Izzard fan by any chance? The line "Running, jumping, climbing trees and punching stuff in the face ." is very similar to a line from an Izzard show "Running, jumping, climbing trees, putting on make-up when your up there.".
    If this has been answered already my apologies :).

    I always preferred point buy system for picking my stats.
    When you have players coming from most RPG video games that have a similar model of building a character's stats it can make more sense and is a nice bit of player choice without compromising flaws, because there is never enough points to have everything high.

    • @SherlockHulmes
      @SherlockHulmes  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Point buy is a good system for experienced RPG players of certain games imo. A lot of modern RPGs hide stats now, so it's less obvious for those who didn't play a certain era of games. It's also the hardest one to explain easily in a video. Rolling stats is iconic D&D and with the Standard Array there's no issue of people having utter garbage stats.
