The engine is notorious for excessive oil consumption. I'm currently getting my engine replaced with 284000 miles. Install an oil catch can $30 and clean the intake valves every 30k, but monitor the oil level every 1000 miles.
I noticed both links you provided only list the 4 cyl. engines. Mine is a 2014 Sorento 3.3l that I bought used with only 86k miles earlier this year, and mine just did the same exact thing you described at 93k miles. I noticed you said your was the 3.3l also did Kia say those were covered under the recall too?
This has just happened to our 2013 Optima....engine bearing knock suddenly developed. We were one month past our 7 year warranty, 131,000kms. To their credit, Kia is going to replace, at no cost to us, with a new engine and have loaned us a car while ours gets repaired. Very happy.

THANK YOU! This was an extremely helpful video. I just purchased my used 2011 kia optima a few days ago, I paid roughly $5000. A few days after I bought it the check engine light came on for a bad crankshaft sensor (P0014) I replaced the sensor and the light went off, but after replacing the sensor we started the car up and there was a HORRIBLE sound. It sounded as if metal was grinding or slapping each other. I plugged the code reader back in and error code P1326 came up, I researched this error code and came upon this video and a lifetime warranty for the engine. I was extremely relieved when I found this video and the document. I thought I was out of $5000, and to be honest, I did almost cry. I called Kia after my research. They paid for a tow truck to come get it, and then paid for my rental car. A few days later they told me they are going to be replacing my engine and that I should expect to receive my vehicle by the end of next week!

Your comment made me feel glad I posted this video to help many that may be going through the same thing. I am happy to hear KIA is fixing your car at no cost to you and that you didn't get scammed for $5000 by the person who sold you the car. That's messed up that they sold you the car like that knowing more than likely that the car had an engine issue and didn't tell you about it. I hope the car runs well when you get it back and would love to hear back from you on how the car is running after sometime after it has been fixed. Thank you so much for watching and for leaving your wonderful comment and your experience and story. I really do appreciate it.
DruManjiDrew No problem! I will let you know when I get it back. I expected to get it back last Friday but they keep telling me different dates, which is extremely frustrating. Although I do want everything to be ‘right’ on the car, so I’m not trying to rush them. I did figure out the car only had one previous owner, then someone ended up on a used car lot. I bought it a week after they put it in their lot. So to me, with it only having one owner and it getting a new engine, this is a new car. Lol.
Had the exact same issue for the exact same price. Brought a 2012 Kia Optima 85k mikes for 4800$. I literally recommended this car to every one after 6 months of driving it. I thought for the features the look and the price I got a steal. After a year my engine seized up. I to was heart broken thinking I was out of 5 grand but then found the recall threads. Luckily I was approve for a new engine and after weeks and weeks of waiting I got my Kia back. The next week the transmission went. I paid a 1000$ to get the rebuilt transmission. Now I thought I basically got a brand new car with a new engine and a rebuilt transmission for a 1000$. A week after this now the engine problems return. I just dropped my Kia back to the dealer yesterday and now they are telling me the wait is even longer because my engine problems are not as severe. The first time I drove the car until the engine no longer would turn over. This time I thought to be more cautious and return it as soon as the first engine shut off. Eventually the car turned back on after a few hours but now I’m out of a car and I’m currently waiting for the results. Will never buy Kia again !
Thank you so much for this info! Just happened to me today. My 2013 kia optima just simply stopped in busy rush hour traffic. Was going 60mph, all the lights came on and it just stopped. Almost got rear-ended. Got it towed to Kia dealership. Gave me the run down on the recall. Talking about it might apply! Oh hell no! It applies. I feel so much better going in with the info you gave me! Thanx again! And everybody PLEASE be safe!
@@DruManjiDrew Got a brand new engine FOR FREE. Took an entire month to get it back. But they also covered my rental. Will keep this car until it's time to buy a new one, but never another Kia. Again, thank you!
Thank you for the video. We have a 2013 Hyundai Sonata that we bought used for our daughter for college. We purchased it exactly a year ago. It had about 75k miles on it when we purchased. It now has 91k miles on it. The other day she calls and tells me while she was driving she heard a knocking sound coming from the engine and experiencing a loss of power. Good thing she was close to home. She drove it home and called me. I get home from work check it all out and before I start the car I check the oil and there was very little oil on the dipstick. I fill it with two qts of oil and it’s still knocking. I add two more qts and the knocking stopped. I drove it around for a little bit and at first everything seemed ok. I drove it around a second time just to make sure and give it a little more acceleration but the knocking came back and felt the loss of power. Drove it back home check the oil and there was little to no oil on the dip stick again. No visible leaks anywhere so I don’t know what is going on or where that amount of oil could’ve gone with no signs of any leaks. I had it towed to my local mechanic a guy that I know and he checked it yesterday. He said when he turned it on it immediately started knocking and that the damage has already been done. He said he didn’t need to drive to know that. He said there is a really good possibility that the car will need a new engine. He’s going to check it out some more today and let me know what he finds before I take to our local Hyundai dealer. I already know that Hyundai is going to give me the runaround so I’ve been mentally preparing myself for the circus and excuses they’ll give me. I’ve been trying to get as much info as possible for this same issue we’re having. I see that there was a class action lawsuit and a recall for these problems. Hopefully fingers crossed Hyundai will honor the recall regardless even though we are not the original owners. We’ve had all the oil changes current on it this past year and no problems with the vehicle since we bought it a year ago. For the most part the car ran pretty good. Just this one big issue happened the other day. Wish me luck!
DrumanjiDrew Yes Hyundai replaced the engine at no cost. They honored the recall and got us a rental to use until they completed all repairs and replacement of the engine. So grateful it worked out because I was stressing and thought I was gonna have buy a new car or come out of pocket to replace that motor. But it all turned out good👍
Hello, my engine just went out due to the same fault and it was only 5 months ago that I made the purchase. Can you tell me the steps to follow to make the claim?
Shout out to this man for the 411 ,just dropped off our 2014 optima for exact problem they took it no questions and gave us a rental with only 30 miles on it until problem is fixed ,real savior 💯💯
This is soo real!! My optima sxl did this same exact thing. At 104 thousand miles. Completely stalled. I had two mechanic tell me about my engine was locked. I called that KIA number and they had it towed and diagnosed for free. I just pick it up from the dealer with a whole new engine thank you to all those recalls and videos like this because I would’ve never thought. Thank you again.
i run a mechanic shop and we have a kia with that same motor. and it came on a tow truck from the motor locked up. they were just here a few days ago and ran fine. when it first came in last week it had the same issue where it jjust stalled out on the freeway. when i initially checked it it had no oil on the dip stick. added oil and replaced the battery and took care of the oil leak it had on the pressuer switch and did a complete oil change and it was fine. so i thought...im glad you made this video that way i can show the customer as proof of a known failure on this engine.
My 2011 Hyundai Sonata had 155k miles last Friday when the engine went out. The had it towed to a shop and today they told me about this recall that was never fixed in my car. I checked the vin a few minutes ago and it falls under the recalled cars. Making an appointment in the morning. Thanks for the info.

UPDATE; Sorry I forgot about this comment guys but the local Hyundai dealership replaced my engine block with a brand new one from the factory for free. My Sonata is still good now in 2020 driving fine without any issues. 178k miles on the dashboard so far and a new engine under the hood, can't go wrong with that.
I just want to say Thank You!!! After watching your video and making a call to the Kia number you provided... they asked me to take my car in because the vin was in fact registered as being in the recall list. I took it in, the tech gave it 2-3 good revs, and then 💥.... engine dead!! It didn’t even sound as loud as it had earlier in the day either. (Almost sounded like it was better lol) Anyway, they approved the repair, and paying for my rental as well. I’ve had nothing but exceptional customer service from them, for now at least...but I honestly don’t expect any different seeing as they had no problem owning up to it once the vin was given. Again, thank you!! Because all I thought was, my engine was going to crap out soon, and I sure af didn’t have the money to pay for it, blah blah blah...... but God is good, and so are you, and so is Kia. Lmao. Merry Christmas!🎄
Glad I could help and am happy to hear you were able to get this looked at before things got worse! Hope you get your car back soon and working as good as new! Merry Christmas to you too :)
My son's car broke down last night. I saw your video and it sounds similar. Kia checked it last year and no problems. According to my son, car shut down and would only accerlate to 20mph. I picked him up and it runs but the knocking is occurring and check engine light is on. Towed to the dealership, we will see tomorrow. It sounds like what you and others described. Info is on point and it will help when I talk to them cause they are always trying to get over.
@@DruManjiDrew I already called Kia corporate and got my case number this morning. The dealership called and they said it would take a couple days to diagnose??? Corporate stated that they would call them and me in couple days. In the waiting mode right now. I will be updating. Good looking Dru!
A! Bro thank you for your endeavor to try to help other people with your valuable information just for your information I’m an owner of a 2014 Kia Optima LX. on or about January 14th I started having serious issues with my engine. I knew it was time to make an appointment with Kia. I had knowledge of the engine recalls because I received a letter. So I made an appointment, they run a test on it The next day the guy called and said my engine was done. The test failed. I had 129,000 miles on my car. That was not an issue whatsoever. The guy was very nice very attentive, put me in one of their brand new Kia cars to drive. While my engine was being replaced and said we will call you when we’re done replacing your engine. It took them about three weeks. To engine replaced from the manufacture. The warranty that I received was one year with Kia dealership that did the work and after that the manufacture will continue to warranty the engine as long as I own the car. The car runs great!!! all this at NO COST to me.
I have a 2015 Sante Fe 2.0 Turbo at 53,000 km (33,000 mi). No extra cost warranty is 5 yr 100,000 km (60,000 mi). Engine Failed today while out-of-town. The local dealer in that city was very helpful, looked after us very well and provided a no-cost equivalent courtesy car good for the duration of our repair down time. What more could you ask for. They have treated us very well. I did have all our scheduled maintenance done at dealerships as far away as 2700 km (1700 mi) from home. We have previously owned Subaru, Toyota, and Honda; and are very satisfied with our current choice of Hyundai. PS: DrumanjiDrew, respectfully please invest in a tripod for your next shoot.
Thanks for letting us know what happened in your situation and I'm glad to hear everything worked out for you and you were treated with the up most respect and assistance at the dealership. Have you ever encountered any major issues with any of the other car manufactures that you mentioned or was Kia the only one that has had a major issue like this for you? Also, thanks for the suggestion. That is something I must invest in.
Just happened to my 2014 kia sorento, bought it used a couple years ago and has 164,000 miles on it. It was inspected and was determined it was under the recall. Total replacement at no cost to me. It was running a P1326 code I believe in relation to a knock sensor I think. My local mechanic researched it and told me about it so I contacted kia and they checked it. The Lord sure is good!!
Ok so because I watched this video I now have refurbished motor I did not know they had a recall until I watched this my car had 154000 and they still covered it no questions asked so mine just died out of the blue we let it sit overnight on the side of the highway we went to retrieve it next morning it did start but no power we drove it home it died again I pulled dipstick it looked like silver glitter mine never made noise it just seized up at once when we pulled in the driveway I made a call to Hyundai where we bought it and they sent a wrecker to pick it up they gave us a reference number for a rental at no charge this video saved my tail on thousands of dollars thank you!!!!!!

My 2013sx optima currently has 93k trouble free miles. Only unscheduled repair was a $100 wastegate adjustment on the turbo. Note that I change the oil with full synthetic every 5k miles. I also did the first oil change early. Wonder if that offset this engine problem. Planning to keep this thing until the wheels fall off so we shall see! I still love my Kia...
@@luism8612 sold it with 100k trouble free miles to buy a 2019 Nissan altima due to autonomous driving features. 2019 optima was no longer competitive and I don't want to own a turbo again due to more frequent oil changes. Altima has 10000 mile 1 year oci
I had a 2011 Optima SX with the turbo 2.0. I got a recall notice, had it tested, and it passed. That was in 2018. In 2019, while driving 700 miles from home, my engine light began flashing and the engine went into "limp mode", not able to drive more than 20 mph or so, and the engine started knocking. I had to have it towed 100 miles to a Kia dealership, where they said they needed to replace the engine, which was on back order. It took 7 weeks, but I got it shipped to me, at their cost. I did have to fight a bit for all the money of the towing and rental car costs, but they did cover it in the end. I did end up with a complete engine, not just the short block. I still am driving the car, would love a new one, but am hesitant.
My 2012 Kia optima started using oil. I bought used from dealership and I got an extended warranty. Thank you for this information I am going to get it checked out.
I’m the second owner of my 2011 sonata and just got a brand new engine through the dealership although my car never stalled feels like new I have 140k miles
Captain Cannabis Bought my 2011 Hyundai Sonata 9-18 it cut off wont start 11-18 A hour from my home. I had Hyundai Road Side Service tow it to dealership, they call say I need New Engine &Starter & they’d called Hyundai & got approval to Cover it Under Recall it had 165,000 Miles Technically out of Warranty! They also Provided me with Rental Car & Reimbursed me for Towing. But my ordeal was A Nightmare! I used the DEALERSHIP in MONTGOMERY, AL got car back Radio, Bluetooth, USB & AC didn’t Work & drove like crap! It DON’T RUN & WONT EVEN START &I CAN’T GET ANY ANSWERS OR SOLUTIONS FROM HYUNDAI!!
Got my 2012 Sorento at an auction with the seized motor for $1000, called Kia and they had a flat bed at my place within an hour. I’d say I got a good deal. Even if it happens again in 100,000 miles. The body of my Sorento has 160,000 on it
Same, mine is 125,000. Second owner. I bought when it had just past warranty. Haven’t even owned it a year. It caught on fire. So the dealership took care of you?
If you live in Korea, you are Fucked !! No recall !! They will only fix it, when your connecting rod puches out of the Engine block and catches the car on fire. This "debris" explanation, by gutter oil Jjanke Hyundai is a total LIE ! The problem is caused by too skinny of big bearing/journal, lack of oil path to the main bearing and very brittle Connecting Rod. The rebuild engine will suffer the same fate. Better sell it, as soon as it's fixed. Korean news on the Engine problems m.th-cam.com/video/AzedlBus49E/w-d-xo.html
@@suesan5111 Sounds like if you have a Korean built engine you don't have a problem. We have Korean built ones in Australia, have heard nothing about major engine failures.
@@rayg9069 Are there many Hyundai theta Engines in Australia? The problem is specific to Theta Design(Narrow main bearings with poor oil channel ), not manufacturing. Btw, There is a rumor that Hyundai Kia will Collapse. The CEO who rescued Hyundai from 90s disaster by increasing reliability and offering 10yr 100k mile warranty has not been seen in Public for a while and his Son Can not take control unless he can come up with 8 billion dollars to pay for 65% inheritance tax to transfer Hyundai ownership from his Father to himself.
@@suesan5111 I think the theta engines are fitted to the same models here as in the USA, we have the Gamma the 1.6Lt GDI in the smaller Accent and i30 range. The larger models are not big sellers in Australia. I watched the Korean news link attached lower down in the thread, it does appear Hyundai have reached the power design limits for the theta engine, the engines shown in the news item all seemed to have suffered piston crown detonation, cylinder wall scuffing followed by rapid increase in oil consumption and ultimate bearing/rod failure. Interesting that the new 2019 Accent with the Gamma engine boasts a 7% power reduction, along with much improved fuel efficiency!, I wonder if this is Hyundai attempting to avoid more issues? It would be sad if the company fails, they have made huge improvements to their build quality and are a respected brand in Australia, more respected than GM or Ford.
Most of the failures have been on 2012 2.4L engines used in various vehicles. Yesterday I had the ECU update performed on my 2016 Sorento 2.0L turbo. Talked to the service manager and technician, they showed me several vehicles in for engine replacement. All were 2.4L, Kia is taking care of the problem with out any hassle. Was told they haven’t had any 2016 2.0L turbo’s in for engine failure. After the ECU update was installed on my Sorento I now have a lifetime warranty on my engine. Not good for those effected by this problem for sure, but at least they are giving customers new engines and great warranties for peace of mind.

I have a 2013 KIA Soul with 86,000 miles. I took my car in last week because it was burning oil, about 1 quart 1-2 months. The rental car dealership, Enterprise, was just down the street and already had my information to pickup a rental car until my Soul was fixed between 2-4 weeks. I don't know exactly what a new engine replacement mean and I should had of gone into details what that means, however I'm happy that the car will be eventually fixed so I can not complain at this moment. I am very satisfied with KIA service and its warranty plan was a main reason I decided to pull into this dealership 7 years ago.

@@DruManjiDrew at this moment I have 105,000 +/- miles. The KIA's engine runs great and the issue with the engine oil mysteriously evaporating, not leaking on the ground, not smoking from the tailpipe, just evaporating after 1 to 2 months has been resolved. The parts the dealership replace are called a small engine block replacement ( new or remanufactured) and all the parts the engine oil will contact are also replaced, piston, rods, gaskets, etc.
I've had my Optima back from the Kia service department for 2 months with the remanufactured (to 100 % factory specification they say). It runs great now. I was disappointed in them being flaky about providing me with a rental. I bought a used 2006 CTS as a second car to get around in. I'm not opposed to buying another Kia.

We traded a 2013 Optima EX with the 2.4 a few years ago with an easy 22k miles and first oil change at 1k as with all my new cars/engines. I did receive a few notices about the recall and free dealer inspection. Never had a single issue. Traded it for a 2017 Cadenza SXL 3.3 which is a great car so far, very smooth engine. Just picked up a 2016 Forte 5 with the 2.0 for a 3rd car/work vehicle with just 23k miles. I did buy an extended bumper to bumper though just incase. So from what I've read here, that the Korean built engines are not part of the engine failures/recalls? I just picked up a decibel meter to start keeping records in possible changes when I open the hood ever so often. Thanks for all the comments! It's been an informative read!

"had the issue around 133000 miles, took down to the dealership, they replaced the engine asap, paid my rental for a week, so far so good" -Good to hear things worked out for you.
The same just happened to my 13 Kia Optima at 133000 miles. How did you start the process to replace the engine even though you pass the 100000 miles warranty.
FCS Sensai thanks man my engine got replace and Kia gave the engine, lifetime warranty and unlimited miles. But they wouldn’t give me the mileage on the replacement engine.
2013 Sorento with the 2.4 110k on the clock. This morning started hearing a light tapping. Driving home it became louder when I gave it a little gas. Never got a recall notice. Checked online with my Vin and sure enough I have the SC 147 recall. Wish me luck. Hopefully this is a smooth process.
I have the same engine and mine seized at 116k miles just two days ago . They’re replacing the engine at no cost. I disagree with the comment of Kia’s being horrible cars; on the contrary no other car company trusts their engine to guarantee up to 10 years or 100k miles from day one of purchase. Prior to my engine dying I had literally no engine issues whatsoever. Yes this is a major problem, but once it was identified, they have taken steps to rectify the problem to the extent of providing owners with new engine blocks if needed. While it sucks to have your engine seize, as I did, I am happy that they stepped up to fix it at no cost even after 100k miles. Having that 10 yr 100k mike warranty is a huge reassurance so you are not strapped with a ridiculous repair bill.. more of a reason to buy a Kia in my opinion.
They are horrible because 90% of Kia’s don’t last more than 100,000 miles, while pretty much every other car doesn’t have a major problem until 150,000 miles... enjoy your cheaply made death trap
this is why it is a must to change the oil after approx 300-500 miles on a brand new engine. I did it to my 2013 hyundai sonata, then changed the oil again at 3k miles. After that, oil changes at normal intervals at 7500 miles. car now has 243k miles with zero engine issues.
My 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0t engine failed at 110,000. However, Hyundai had a software upgrade which I had done (at 90,000) prior to engine failure. The software update extended the warranty to 120,000. It took 2 months to replace the engine.

2013 Santa Fe sport 95k miles, Hyundai replaces with new engine. 2013 sonata 132k miles, Hyundai replacing that engine too. I now have 2 new engines with $0.00 out of pocket expense. Hyundai should be recognized as a company who stands by their product. I am very pleased with them.
My 2014 engine just failed in my sonata. They say they cannot help me because the warranty states it’s only up to 120k miles. I have 122k... can you explain how you worked around that?
Just got my class action notice on the mail today. I don’t hear any knocking noise, my car has 90k. I’ll be calling Kia tomorrow. Thanks for the video. I’ll have the dealership check it out
I had this issue last year with my Kia Sportage 2015. Had to buy an auction car because they did not want to help me at the dealer. Sent my Kia to Mexico 2 months later since I live by the border and the mechanic told me that the bearings wore out and had a bent rod on the first cylinder. Which originally I thought was the timing change. Almost a year and 20000 miles later and the SUV still works but I hear the same ticks.
2013. Hyundai Sonata 106k miles i bought this car used a couple years ago from a private seller. Engine died called a dealer and yes its a recall. AAA tow to dealer, no receipts needed and they put a new long block in my car plus a whole car evaluation all for free. Free rental if i needed it for the 4 weeks they had the car. Worked out great for me.

We' bought our 2013 Optima new and its got over 100k now without a single issue. Took it to the Kia dealership and they programed the computer and did something to the knock sensor. They also put a different color dipstick in it. Knock on wood its been a great car.
I’m a Kia tech. They didn’t just replace the block. You got a re-man long block. Therefore block, head, oilpump, oil pan, valve cover, water pump, thermostat housing, and all internal engine components. The warranty is 15 years unlimited miles starting from the day of purchase. Also you do not pay more for the 100k warranty. If you bought the vehicle new it comes standard with 5/60 bumper to bumper, and 10/100 power train.
Diamond 482 no it’s not gonna detune it. The ecu update is for the knock sensor. It’s going to make it look for any unusual knock. After the ecu update if the CEL comes on and the code is for the knock sensor Kia will automatically replace the engine.
Thank you very much ..... a straight forward answer ... I still don't have an answer from Kia themselves and or two Canadian dealerships. It's like they didn't even hear the question ...... "long silence .... so would you like to book that appointment sir" ... "but you didn't answer my question" ...... "I'll have to call you back" ........ its been two days later. So .... your my hero for the week ... thank you very very very much.
I took my car in for the recall and they said it was fine. Now 10k miles later my car looses power and there's a small rattle/nock. Should I take it back to them?
My sister's 2012 Sonata engine failed while driving an Uber passenger on the highway! Very scary situation for the both of them. It took 2 months to get her new-engine replacement but thankfully she had a free car rental during the wait. She bought her car used at a little over 140k miles, but it drove amazingly. Engine failed at 156k.

That's great that it did eventually get fixed. Did your sister purchase the car second hand or from kia? I'm buying one today second hand and im wondering if the warranty will transfer over to me should i have this problem.
This video game me peace. Thanks bro. I didn’t have any tick sounds. I was driving, was about to turn right in as I slow down I got “ warning, hybrid engine failure“ scary, because I just bought it two days ago 😲
I bought a 2011 Kia Optima back in July and in August the engine blew. I was driving back from a friends house and once I hit about 50 mph the engine threw a rod. The car still made it home and then made it about half way to my mechanics shop before dying. I called Kia and they replaced the engine with 3 weeks and in the mean time gave me a 2018 Ford F-150 rental. Didn't cost me a dime.

I'm sure other people have already commented...but the "debris" problem explained in the recall notice is a big farce. They said they fixed the problem with the debris in the factory after the issue started in 2011...when it started on the Sonata and others. Now it's extended to 2015 and there is also a software update to reprogram the knock sensor to detect engine failure on all these engines up to 2018 I believe. Not to mention debris would cause the engine failures at low mileage. Many are happening at higher mileage. It's just a defective engine design they have been trying to fix since like 2012.

Toyotas, GMs, and Fords have more recalls than Hyundais or Kias. This doesn't encourage me not to buy Hyundais again at all.. Every car manufacturers learn from their mistakes. That's why we have recall programs for these manufacturers.
My 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport died almost caused rear ended. Dealer wants ten years receipts. Unreasonable, Hyundai terrible Thank you for your help. Excellent. I had extended warranty from Hyundai.
The aluminium swarf (machining debris) gets embedded in the bearing material accelerating wear. However I believe the primary issue is oil consumption many of these engines start burning oil prior to failure additionally they replace the dip sticks in repaired or replaced engines to the later part with the red handle which has revised high and low marks requiring more oil to reduce starvation. This engine family (design) is used by kia/hyundai, chrysler and mitsubishi both chrysler and mitsubishi use different suppliers for the bearings and oil pump & balance shaft module and their engines are reliable. I'm not a fan of the oil pump / balance shaft module in hyundai / kia. This problem for hyundai / kia goes back to 2006.

@@DruManjiDrew yup 2006 just call a local junkyard / Auto dismantler and ask for a price and ask if you can get an extended warranty 😁. The only redeeming quality is the engine R&R on these engines is about 2.5 hrs.
Same here. My 2012 Optima SXT seized on me last night on the highway. Thankfully my son wasn't with me at the time, had it towed to KIA and they are replacing the engine. 82k miles.
I have a 2013 Kia Sorento with this same engine. No engine trouble in the 2.9 years I've had it; I have had 2 recalls done on it as well. But I did hear this intermittent rattling from the driver's side about June 2016, 3 months after I purchased it. I've had it checked out multiple times only for the service techs to not be able to reproduce the noise. As we speak, the noise hasn't resurfaced in a long time and I hope it never returns but I always have this lingering fear that my engine will fail, or worse, my car will catch on fire, as there have been reports of these vehicles bursting into flames. I may either trade it in for a V6 Sorento since those haven't had any reported issues, or I might just got with another auto brand all together.
I would recommend getting rid of it before something possibly happens. I think Honda or Toyota is a better choice which also holds a better resale value.
My Kia Sportage 2014 ---38,311 miles on my engine and locked up on the freeway. They had my car for 6 weeks. I got a new long block. I had 25 days left on my 10 year warranty ( 5/ 14/ 2024 got it back. Put 30 miles on my new engine and checked the oil it was 1 and a half quart low. I got a new starter and intake manifold. I bought my Kia new.

I have a hyndi i45 (sonata) and i got a letter end of 2017 regarding this recall so i took my car to my local hyndi dealership, they took it off me to check it out. 2 hours later i get a call saying my car is gucci and no problem so i was like sweet great news. fast forward 2 months i started to hear some horrendous noses coming from my engine so i take it back they say nothing is wrong, so im like wtf okay?? then june this year i was driving on the freeway to work and my car died (nothing is scarier than trying to cross 3 lanes of traffic doing 100kmh with no engine) surprise surprise there was something wrong with the engine but only after i paid them $600 of mechanical work. the dealership said they have to get the parts from Korea which will take 2 months so im like fair enough gotta do what ya gotta do. august rolls around no update so i call they say the engine is on back order, they say it will be shipped end of the month. I got my car back on 10/10/2018 she works great after putting a new battery in it cause my one was dead (i bought a new one in may) which the hyndi service team ran flat. hyndi have not reimbursed me a cent not for the tow i had to get, the $600 i spent on new parts that had to be replaced anyways or the $200 on a new battery. this post sounds pretty bitchy but i want to let people know how they will treat you and to vent my frustration.
I am the second owner of a 2013 Hyundai Sonata SE with a 2.0 turbo GDI Theta II engine. I got the settlement letter that said if I get the Software Update for the knock sensor my engine will have a lifetime engine warranty. I got the software update 4 weeks ago and in 1 week my engine shutoff and had a blinking MIL light. I took it to the Hyundai Dealer and they found my engine needed replaced. They gave me a loaner car and a week later my car had a new engine at no charge.
"Got my 2012 Sorento at an auction for $1000 with the seized motor called up KIA now I have a new car lol they even have me the free rental no hassle." -You lucked out on that one lol. Did you filp the car for a profit after they fixed it?
This just happened to me yesterday. Was driving home...check engine, oil, and battery lights all came on a couple weeks ago. Car turned off. Had it towed($80) to my mechanic, and they couldn't get it to happen again, car ran fine, all things considered. Couple days later, check engine light came on. Just got it back from mechanic yesterday, and the same 3 lights popped on on my way home. Metal shavings clogging the solenoids. They cleaned it and still happened. Called kia today, and they will be looking at it. 2014 kia optima. Hoping they replace the whole engine, because I don't want to deal with this bs again. Never getting another kia though.
Yes I have a 2015 Kia Soul with the engine recall. It’s in the gdi engines they said and the pistons can explode and can start a fire. I have an appointment Thursday with the dealership. They’re supposed to fix it. Luckily nothing happened to my car yet. I just bought it three days ago. It’s also the Kia Soul models. He didn’t say those

I have a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport with 150K miles. The engine lost power as I was driving 75 MPH on the highway. I had to pay upfront $300 to tow it to the nearest Hyundai dealer. Sending a claim to the class action website for reimbursement. No push back or charges from the dealer on repairing the issue. Just like in the video the dealer did not replace the entire engine. They have several service kits that address the issue. They do not replace any hoses or connections. The repair was done within 3 days. I still hear a little bit of a ticking sound. We'll see how long this lasts.
I don't like how the fixed the bare minimum because the damage could have effected other components under the hood. I hope your car last long after it was repaired.
I had my 2012 Sonata GLS recalled and checked by my local Hyundai dealer as mandated by Hyundai Canada. The cars Theta II engine passed the test, thus, Hyundai Canada is extending the engine warranty up to 200k kms. or 10 years. I am already at the 152k kms on the clock.....
I received multiple mails about this class lawsuit. I took my car after the due time for the check. They took my car, checked it and extended the warranty(10 years or 120k miles) luckily the engine haven’t had any noise. My car is 2013 Hyundai Sonata, and it works like a charm.
The recall only effects theta GDI engines even though if you check the NHTSA there are many complaints with the same issue of port injection engines. KIA needs to be accountable.
"The recall only effects theta GDI engines even though if you check the NHTSA there are many complaints with the same issue of port injection engines. KIA needs to be accountable." - KIA = Trash
I have a 2015 Hyundai Sonata Limited motor failure at 152,000 miles received a replacement motor from Hyundai in Riverside California - The repairs were covered under this warranty - I talked to one of the service managers there who stated they swapped two or three motors a week at this location- so good news
I have a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. It has 92K and I'm the second owner. The engine seized yesterday. I remember getting the recall notice and a took it to get the recall done on Sept. 2017. What should I do now?
Tom Luna well my dad had a 2013 Hyundai Sonata too it was the gls model his engine never seized or failed because the engine was replaced before any of this happened right now it got flooded and was tooken to copart the mileage was at 83,575
You can go back and tell them about the recall related. I did it, I took in my Santa fe in nothing was wrong, a month or 2 later turn off on me after a pull on the highway started knocking took it in and Hyundai replaced the engine
Update: I went to the dealership they replaced the engine. All I had to pay for was for the belt and hoses. I was actually very surprised the dealership was very friendly I thought they were going to give me all kind of excuses but they didn't.
We had one go bad in our Sorento, dealer paid for tow bill and new engine was replaced totally free and told us that if it blew up again we would get another free engine for the life of the vehicle
Engine failed in my 2013 Optima at 145,000 miles. No maintenance records required. Kia would not tow for free though. I was told by Kia Service that my engine was replaced. Pretty sure it’s refurbished as he mentioned. Just glad I’m back on the road!
debris story BS - they're covering up true cause in most generic way possible. oil/filter change would have removed any left over debris - just like any other vehicle engine. somebody somewhere understands the real reasons for this.
But once the metal gets in the engine and gets to the bearings its already fucked its just a matter of time before something fails even after the oil is changed
Agree - theres a link to a video in Korean from the earlier comments. Its a manufacturing defect as stated by a whistleblower. th-cam.com/video/AzedlBus49E/w-d-xo.html

Thank you! This is happening to me right now and I was worried it wouldn’t be covered by this recall... I checked my vin number on kias website and it’s covered. Thanks again for easing my mind because this is exactly what happened to me.
This is a big problem. I have a Hyundai Sonata. The exact same experience with grinding noise, engine failure, but mine ended up catching fire when I was pulled over with the car off. My 8 year old son and I were terrified on the side of the freeway watching my car go up in flames. I’m currently dealing with an attorney.
As a Hyundai tech the gdi causes carbon build up getting into the oil which is lubricating the crankshaft and rod bearing in the block chewing those rod bearings up not allowing lubrication to get into the engine which either will make it blow up or seize
Sad to hear but thanks for sharing. when the engine is changed is it for a different type or the same where this issue will happen again in just a matter of time?
I just recently bought one from a dealer at 185k miles. It’s been working pretty great and it’s overall a great car. Is there anything you had to worry about really? I know I have been hearing a bit of rattling when accelerating but this is my first time hearing a GDI engine so I’m guessing it’s normal?
I bought the lifetime oil change when we bought our 2015 optima. Been dealer oil changes from day and the car was under factory warranty when we bought it, so covered there. They notified me the engine short block is covered for life as long as I own the car. To me a company knowing that they have a problem such as pre mature engine failure and is 💯 standing behind they have my business. Toyota has known ring failures in some of their 4 cylinders due to low quality rings being usef and they do not stand behind the short block at all. They also consume excess oil so put the two companies side by side and I'll choose the one that stands behind their producr!
Just had it happen to my 2012 Optima SX Turbo, absolutely love the car but a bearing blew at 94k... Many thanks to Kia for replacing the engine for free though 👍
"Just had it happen to my 2012 Optima SX Turbo, absolutely love the car but a bearing blew at 94k... Many thanks to Kia for replacing the engine for free though 👍" -Glad you got it replaced free of charge
My sister's engine actually seized from this. At first I thought it was a battery, starter or cable issue cause it would not turn over. When I tried to manually turn the crank with a breaker bar it would not budge. After a few attempts rocking crank back and forth we got it started again it stalled a couple times had loud ticking sound but eventually it ran fine .Took it to dealer and explained everything that happened and told them to test for the recall. They said it was "impossible" that it was seized, there was nothing wrong and changed us $100 for loose battery cable. They would not provide us with proof of the test, didn't even change the oil as they were supposed to. For six months the car ran fine until yesterday when out of nowhere engine is rattling, screaching, and stalled. Will barely start and seems like it's about to seize up again. We'll see what the dealer has to say about it now.
@@DruManjiDrew yes, this time we took it to a different dealer and without having to explain anything they replaced the engine under warranty and even fixed an issue with the rattling steering.
Happened to my 2013 Kia Sorento too. First the transmission went out at 134,000 and then at 141,500 the engine had some slight knocking, and few days later car stalled after making a squeak sound in the middle of the median. Called Kia, car wasn't on the recall list even though it was a 2.4 L engine but wasn't GDI. Asked for estimates, said they don't make long block engines anymore but they could put in a used long block engine (no documented miles but 6 month warranty) for $5,000 just for the engine or put in a new short block 2.4 L engine costing $6,000 for the engine. Labor alone was quoted at 20 hrs almost $2,000. The engines alone are worth more than the car itself in running order. Just crazy, dangerous and unacceptable. Never had hazard lights come up and code reader didn't pick anything up either. My Chevy Malibu 2001 has lasted over 170,000. Just bad cars from 2011 to 2014 for the Kia Sorento line with engine issues.
So… I read that the warranty and recall benefits doesn’t apply to used Kia’s; as a second owner you may not be covered, otherwise as an original owner you should ask your nearby Kia dealer for the lawsuit Lifetime Warranty
Just want to say my experience. This video helped me get a new engine. Driving on my way to work at 4am and all of a sudden I hear a loud boom and rpm starts dropping down. Pull over and hear a grinding noise, thinking my transmission went out. I was able to drive it to work, and drive it home. I bought my car 3 months prior to from a private dealer down the street. Car fax was great and was well maintained. It was sold as is and thought I was out of luck. Buy a new transmission online and have my mechanic buddies take a look. They run a diagnostic and get a bunch of error codes reading misfire and fuel pump. Buy a fuel pump, replace it and still does not work. I finally do some research and see a bunch regarding my 2013 Kia Optima SX Turbo. I run my VIN and see no recalls open. I call Kia corporate, create a case number and they tell him to bring it to dealership. They let me know it was brought in before for a recall that was fixed. I called the dealership on the way to dropping it off. I let them know what happened, they asked what year and model and said “oh yeah I know what you’re talking about” I get there and they see that I’m clearly frustrated. They barely asked me my name and address. Didn’t even verify where it was bought, my license number, or anything. They already knew. They turned it off, said it was the engine rods and said it’ll be done in a week. I was surprised and a little relieved at the turnaround time. They offered to pay for my rental but I have a second car. Followed up a couple days later and let me know it was approved for a new engine. Said it’ll take 1-2 weeks to repair. I’ll update when I receive car. Wish I would’ve seen this video earlier instead of trying to fix myself. My advice is call corporate, open a case before taking it into the dealer and let them diagnose it. I’m the second owner, bought from a second dealer, has 117,000 miles and still were able to get a new engine.
I'm happy to hear my video was able to help you out! I'm also glad to hear you didn't have to deal with much hassle when it came to fixing the car. How are things now with your Kia?
I had my 2013 KIA optima engine just stop working on my on the highway. When I tried to turn on the car again my dashboard came On and so did my head lights, but no crank or anything. I thought I was screwed but I remembered hearing about recalls. I got ahold of my town’s KIA dealership and they looked up my VIN and set a date to fix the 4 recalls. My car is at 169,000 and they still told me they will fix it. All they had to do was look up my VIN and nothing else.I asked if I needed to show any paper work and they said nope and that there was no limit on miles. I remembered hearing that ticking noise and the mechanic told me that it was common with an old engine. But now I know what it really was. Still kinda nervous that the reason my engine stalled was not any of the recalls issue and I will be screwed. But we shall see what happens.
I should add that I took my car for an engine check three weeks before my car went dead. The mechanic at that shop told me everything was fine and it was him who told me not to worry about the ticking noise.
I have a 2013 Kia Optima EX. I got the recall notice in Nov. 2018. They programed the computer to turn on the flashing check engine light if engine wear is detected. My car has 167000 miles on it. The flashing check engine light came on in April 2019 putting my car in limp home mode. I towed it in and they put on a wiring harness. 2 weeks later it happened again. As I am typing this they are installing a new engine. I will get it back in a few days.

Hyundai Motor America is conducting a safety recall to inspect, and if necessary replace, the engine assembly in Model Year 2011 and 2012 Hyundai Sonata vehicles equipped with 2.0 liter turbo and 2.4 liter gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines manufactured at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama.
2014 Kia Optima SX Turbo engine seized I drive for a living and put on a lot of mileage and as such I maintain my car meticulously. However at 215,000km my engine seized solid without any warning. I took it into my local dealer and they replaced it with a brand new engine without any questions. They told me it was a $18,000 CDN replacement value, I seen the invoice to the dealership for $7,600.
I just checked my VIN on the Kia website and I have 1 open recall that isn’t related to the engine. My engine seized, does that mean they won’t cover it??
My 2014 Kia Soul with the 2.0 engine, 110K miles won't start. It recently had been losing some oil with out any detection of any leaks and the oil was getting black quicker. I don't know if the engine is blown, but I suspect that it is after viewing this video and seeing everyone's comments. The Kia Soul is not listed on the recall, but I have heard others having the same issues as the models that have been recalled; so it should be. Even if the engine has over 100k, they should fix it, since this was a major defect on their part...
"I just checked my VIN on the KIA website and I have 1 open recall that isn’t related to the engine. My engine seized, does that mean they won’t cover it??" -You should have contacted KIA customer service. Did you?

Update: Dealership gave me my car back with a replaced brand new engine ( I saw the block is new shiny) maybe after 3 weeks. I think they deducted 3,000 miles in their computer system. But on odometer milage remained same. I was super happy. They provided a nice rental car for those days. Thanks Rick Case Hyundai at plantation FL.
What if you bought your Kia used from a not Kia dealership and purchased a 100 000 miles power train warranty? Will I have to use the warranty to get it fixed or do I have to call Kia?
Kia will fix it. Dont worry all car companies fail. Kia is honest This guy that made the video is over reacting. If there's a recall the will deal with it .my friend got a brand new engine.made in Korea not a ghetto part of the USA.
I have some interesting questions, if you have warranty for your engine and your hole car catches fire because the engine fails, does kia give you another car? Do they just give you the cost of an engine? Or they give you nothing?, I know insurance won't pay if you only have liability coverage
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge i brought my 13 KIA Optima with 48k/mi and it needs the new engine, They're keeping my car for nearly 3wks and refuse to give me a loaner because they don't have one. On a positive note if my engine ever fails it can get replaced for free so that's kind of cool and mine was out of warranty. I will be contacting KIA to compensate me for this because its ridiculous.
@☣☣ẌЇℒ€Ð☣☣ They're actually great, So a little update not only did they replace my engine free of charge but they added an extra 3yr warranty to my already 12yr warranty; needless to say i'm good. If in the future anything happens to the engine it will get replaced free of charge again :) KIA's are reliable and affordable, They're what Toyota/Honda use to be.
Glad I was able to pass on some information and thank you so much for watching! Glad you were able to get your car fixed and I hope the compensate for the trouble
Had my 2013 Sorento's engine seized on me while driving on the highway. I was out of warranty as I had over 100k KMs. They replaced the engine (long block) without a fuss.

I recently had the knock issue with my engine and had it fixed by Kia. But now i am a embarrassed since I never really asked what they repaired / replaced .. when I picked up the car the service tech was not available and the receptionist didn’t have any info at all After reading stories online I see some people got new engines and others just had long block replaced. I don’t know any info about cars at all. Is an engine assembly replacement the same as a compete engine replacement ? Only reason I ask is so I know what to explain when I sell the vehicle I’m seeing my service notes show REMOVED AND REPLACED engine ASSY AS NEEDED REINSTALLED ALL COMPONENTS BACK TO NEW ENGINE SUB ASSY

I wonder if my 2011 Sportage with 312,000 miles on it would still be covered under any recalls. It has ran perfectly until now. I'm getting a noise seemingly coming out the dash area. Besides that, everything still works good, and the engine area and underneath are sqeaky clean with no leaks. I definitely got my moneys worth long ago.
I had my engine replaced at 150k and I have since put 60k on the new block and having more engine problems. The original problem was my car was burning oil too fast and I am having that problem again...Don't buy Kia or Hyundai. All my family members have had to get a new engine...my brother in his 2014 Kia Optima, my wife Hyundai Sonata and my sis-in-law 2017 Kia Sportage
have a 2014 Kia Optima with 125k miles on it. Engine just died out of the blue. Kept up with maintenance. After replacing the starter and battery (both parts $200 each) and still to no avail, took it to the Kia dealership and they tested the engine and said it had failed and that Kia approved replacing the engine at no cost to me. so i don’t think there’s a certain mileage that the car has to be under for them to not approve of the engine replacement.
Juan Sandoval no, because when my car stalled, after replacing both the battery and starter, it still didn’t want to start up. it would sound like it wants to start but never actually turned over.
I have a 2011 Kia Optima with the turbo 2.0 engine. I got a recall notice a year or so ago, brought it in, and they said my engine tested okay. A month ago, while on a cross country trip, my engine light started flashing and my engine went into limp mode, wherein it will only go 20 mph to avoid further engine damage. After a supposed fix, I drove 20 miles, and it did the same, only this time the engine began knocking loudly. All I could do is drop it off at the then closed Kia dealer, rent a car , and proceed with my trip. To date, it is still not repaired, though Kia Consumer Affairs said they would put a complete new engine in, as well as reimburse me for my costs. "I have a 2011 KIA Optima with the turbo 2.0 engine. This exact same thing just happened to me I just bought a 2013 Kia Optima 2.4 GDI I saw this video and took it to KIA , after 3 days of “inspecting the car” the said that Kia approved me to get a new motor and put me in a rental My question is after they Fixed it does it run better is the car worth keeping and how long did it take to fix?
It should take about two weeks to fix and it will be back to the way it was before the problem. I would get rid of the car if possible after they fix it.
Don't get rid of it, they gave me life time warranty on my new engine. My Kia runs alittle stronger. Planning on keeping mine till it's no longer able to function pretty much.
You saved me brother i was gonna buy Kia sorento today now i will never look at it thanks alot i am a hardcore GM Toyota Nissan shopper but these days i see everybody's buying kia cuz its reliable comes with 100k warranty and it looks good too they focused on everything but engine shame on them
No man its happening with the 2018 kia optima sx because my engine was toast they had to put a new engine but just the block and they put all my old parts back on the new blow dont buy kia brand
Dominic Pedro it’s the factor of reliability and it’s a continuous issue, you think because they fixed it because it was obviously still in warranty, I do that’s the only reason it was fixed, but because they fixed it doesn’t mean anything except they “fixed” it temporarily I know how it goes first hand they come back Kia and Hyundai have hid this for years
My 2011 Kia Optima bought it brand new. After 2 years with 80,000 miles I received free Kia Visa card with $200, then used it for 100k service tune up. I changed oil every 7,500 miles as recommended by Kia, since then I had no problem what so ever. But by 2018 of June I had 232,000 miles and still running good, I took it to the dealer for oil change and complained about losing oil a lot with no leaks underneath, I left it there for one day for more diagnostics. The next day they told me they will install brand new engine free of charge and free rental car. After a week I've picked up my car with brand new engine and the service advisor said I have another 15 year warranty on the engine and unlimited mileage and recommended oil change every 5000 miles. Will I buy another Kia? That's for sure, I'm interested getting the Telluride.

Ayoo man do you mind helping me with this because we just but the car and it haven’t even ran for 60k miles It would me nice.. Please🙏
So what if they replaced the engine with a brand new one and it started doing it again three years later?????
This has just happened to our 2013 Optima....engine bearing knock suddenly developed. We were one month past our 7 year warranty, 131,000kms. To their credit, Kia is going to replace, at no cost to us, with a new engine and have loaned us a car while ours gets repaired. Very happy.

- I really enjoyed reading your comment and knowing I was able to help you gain some peace of mind in times of worry and frustration.
Glad I was able to help :)
Wow! Thank you for sharing! I hope everything turned out ok?
DrumanjiDrew Yes Hyundai replaced the engine at no cost. They honored the recall and got us a rental to use until they completed all repairs and replacement of the engine.
So grateful it worked out because I was stressing and thought I was gonna have buy a new car or come out of pocket to replace that motor. But it all turned out good👍

Lmao.

My Kia Optima turned off last night on the freeway while I was driving. Now it won’t turn on again and the battery is good. I think it’s the engine.

Interesting to note that the recalled engines were made in America.
If you live in Korea, you are Fucked !! No recall !! They will only fix it, when your connecting rod puches out of the Engine block and catches the car on fire.

-What's the update on your car now?

How long did it take for them to fix your car
@@blahhblahh3684 Around 3 months I believe. I drive a VW ID.4 electric vehicle now. It's excellent.

Did you buy the car new? Did you have a warranty?
The same just happened to my 13 Kia Optima at 133000 miles. How did you start the process to replace the engine even though you pass the 100000 miles warranty.
@@joaquinsanchez9482 Call KIA. Give them your VIN, mine is under some warranty.
I hope all went well
MikeAnnarose did you pass inspection?
To each his own
They are horrible because 90% of Kia’s don’t last more than 100,000 miles, while pretty much every other car doesn’t have a major problem until 150,000 miles... enjoy your cheaply made death trap
this is why it is a must to change the oil after approx 300-500 miles on a brand new engine.
Thanks for the info.

Glad to hear you haven't had any issues.
Good to know that I got more done than what the lady at Kia told me! Thanks for the info. Much appreciated!
I just the recall letter for an ECU flash. What exactly does the flash do. Is it going to "de-tune" the performance ? ( 2014 SXT Turbo )

I'm sure other people have already commented...but the "debris" problem explained in the recall notice is a big farce. They said they fixed the problem with the debris in the factory after the issue started in 2011...when it started on the Sonata and others. Now it's extended to 2015 and there is also a software update to reprogram the knock sensor to detect engine failure on all these engines up to 2018 I believe. Not to mention debris would cause the engine failures at low mileage. Many are happening at higher mileage. It's just a defective engine design they have been trying to fix since like 2012.

I'm so sorry to hear of your horrific experience! I truly hope that you get every penny that you are entitled to due to this unfortunate incident!
Did the fire total the car allowing you to recover the value as an insurance claim?
As a Hyundai tech the gdi causes carbon build up getting into the oil which is lubricating the crankshaft and rod bearing in the block chewing those rod bearings up not allowing lubrication to get into the engine which either will make it blow up or seize

This just happened to my 2013 SX and I had no warranty but the recall covered a new block.
Nice!
Does it apply OPTIMA SXL?
Did u get a warning in ur car when it happened?
Mike Bauer Happened on to me on my 2015 sonata 2.4l. No warning and i was 200 miles away from home!
"Just had it happen to my 2012 Optima SX Turbo, absolutely love the car but a bearing blew at 94k... Many thanks to Kia for replacing the engine for free though 👍"
-Glad you got it replaced free of charge
I hope this fixed this for You!
I've heard the used cars are still covered.
DrumanjiDrew it runs great now, no problems at all. I have piece of mind that they extended my warranty on the engine they put in. Thanks again
I had my 2013 KIA optima engine just stop working on my on the highway. When I tried to turn on the car again my dashboard came
On and so did my head lights, but no crank or anything.

Thanks for the info

2014 Kia Optima SX Turbo engine seized
I drive for a living and put on a lot of mileage and as such I maintain my car meticulously. However at 215,000km my engine seized solid without any warning. I took it into my local dealer and they replaced it with a brand new engine without any questions. They told me it was a $18,000 CDN replacement value, I seen the invoice to the dealership for $7,600.
Glad you got it fixed with no problem
I just checked my VIN on the Kia website and I have 1 open recall that isn’t related to the engine. My engine seized, does that mean they won’t cover it??
simoneaux15 I like to know the answer to this as well. Because just seized a week ago. But my only recall is to the airbags.

-You should have contacted KIA customer service. Did you?
Thanks for thi great informative video. My 2012 Sonata SE locked up at 103k miles. I dropped that to the dealership. Waiting to hear from them.
Did they rent a car

-Glad I could help! What's the update on your car now?
Update: Dealership gave me my car back with a replaced brand new engine ( I saw the block is new shiny) maybe after 3 weeks. I think they deducted 3,000 miles in their computer system. But on odometer milage remained same. I was super happy. They provided a nice rental car for those days. Thanks Rick Case Hyundai at plantation FL.
What if you bought your Kia used from a not Kia dealership and purchased a 100 000 miles power train warranty? Will I have to use the warranty to get it fixed or do I have to call Kia?
Call Kia
If its a recall, you will get it fixed regardless of the warranty.
Kia will fix it. Dont worry all car companies fail. Kia is honest
This guy that made the video is over reacting.
Thank you for sharing the info
You're welcome :) glad I could help!
@Jon Harris I've put 4000 KM on it since getting it.
Did you call them? We never got a recall and have the same 2013 Sorento and same thing happened to my family last weekend

Many engines have this issue but not all the engines with this issue qualify for repair and/or replacement!
I recently had the knock issue with my engine and had it fixed by Kia. But now i am a embarrassed since I never really asked what they repaired / replaced .. when I picked up the car the service tech was not available and the receptionist didn’t have any info at all
After reading stories online I see some people got new engines and others just had long block replaced. I don’t know any info about cars at all.
Is an engine assembly replacement the same as a compete engine replacement ?
Only reason I ask is so I know what to explain when I sell the vehicle I’m seeing my service notes show REMOVED AND REPLACED engine ASSY AS NEEDED
REINSTALLED ALL COMPONENTS BACK TO NEW ENGINE SUB ASSY

So sorry to hear that. Better off going with Honda or Toyota. I have also learned my lesson in buying Kia's.
I'm 35000 into the second motor. Makes me think twice about holding onto it.
have a 2014 Kia Optima with 125k miles on it.
Mine stalled on my way home, and both my starter and battery were done. After replacing both, it can turn on and run but still making this click noise
Juan Sandoval should definitely take it to the dealership.
I have a 2013 Hyundai sonata 2.4l. Did you have the same issue with your car? Assum it's the same engine
I'm referring to the noise
We will see how this all goes down, hopefully within a week, as the engine was actually on back order, due to high demand. I have over $2,000 in towing and car rental costs so far, and I demanded they transport the car the 700 miles to my home when it is completed.

You saved me brother i was gonna buy Kia sorento today now i will never look at it thanks alot i am a hardcore GM Toyota Nissan shopper but these days i see everybody's buying kia cuz its reliable comes with 100k warranty and it looks good too they focused on everything but engine shame on them
Glad I was able to steer you in another direction before you bought the car!
No man its happening with the 2018 kia optima sx because my engine was toast they had to put a new engine but just the block and they put all my old parts back on the new blow dont buy kia brand
So they fixed your car and now you say don't buy?
Dominic Pedro it’s the factor of reliability and it’s a continuous issue, you think because they fixed it because it was obviously still in warranty, I do that’s the only reason it was fixed, but because they fixed it doesn’t mean anything except they “fixed” it temporarily I know how it goes first hand they come back Kia and Hyundai have hid this for years
@@Lsutton04_ Yes i glad to see this because i was just gone buy a use one..
Even toyota was having oil sucking issues? So it means people should not buy those cars too
Rajinder Singh but they fixed that the next year
My 2011 Kia Optima bought it brand new.
That's for sure, I'm interested getting the Telluride.
thats insane free engine at 232k miles.

You have down the Sonata is recalled from 13 and 14 it's actually 11 through 14 I have a 2011 and it has the recall I had the recall performed they added an orange oil dipstick instead of the yellow which increases the amount of oil about 1 quart that's their fix for right now but quite a few engines after the inspection and the change of the dipstick have still been blowing up mine has about 77,000 miles
Thanks for the updated information
I had the same recall on my 11 Sonata. Mine is just over 106,000.

Any updates? Im in the same boat
