- In this episode I am trying to cover a large distance through Namibia so I am leaving at first light. Unfortunately, I get caught up in a sandstorm so I decide to knock on the door of a scientific research station - to see if I can wait out the storm and spend the night. I'm met by some very friendly scientists and the next day, the wind is gone and I can admire what I came here for: the sharp border between the Great Sea of Sand and the endless Gravel Plains. It is spectacular!

The long shots with the drone showing a tiny motorcycle in all that vastness. I don’t know what that drone cost, but it was worth it.

Wonderful video - as always. Very nostalgic for me as I spent 6 months at Gobabeb in 1986 and stayed in the small square cottage next to where you stayed. I am a retired Geomorphologist and an motorcyclist for 56 years now. Did my first long distance "adventure" trip in 1969 on an old BSA 350. My wife and I still ride and explore, she has a Yamaha XT250 and I have a Yamaha XT660. We have been following you for years, and my wife gets very nervous when you are doing really bad roads. She left fingerprints on my leg she was so nervous when you went up Sani Pass!! All the best, Bruce & Caroline.
I think that one day the Itchy Boots Ride will be a priceless historical document. When people wish to learn what life, society and nature was like in the early 2000's Noraly's unique perspective will entertain,enthral and educate future generations. An Epic Ride for the ages!
I am from Walvis Bay but have lived most part of my life in the Namib Desert in the Topnaar Community, I schooled at Utuseb and I can never thank my parents enough for having send me away to go to school at Utuseb. Being someone who loves nature, the years I have spend in the Namib desert are the best years of my life. I miss the good times when climbing the dunes and swimming in the kuiseb river when it flowed. At the same time I miss walking across the vast plan land, climbing the mountains. I miss the times we could go and search for the Nara fruit along the kuiseb river. I am glad I could see the Gobabeb Research Centre, in all I miss my childhood and I am glad you cloud make me feel at home again.🙏♥️

I am here smiling as I read your text. Namibia is very diverse when it come to landscape, the wild animals as well as the plants, I grew up seeing the welwitchia maribilis plant and I feel privilege for that. I always feel a sense of belonging and happiness when I walk through the forest in the village or when I walk barefoot in the incredibly soft sand of the desert or when the sea wash over my feet as I stroll along the beach in Walvis, Lang strand , Swakop or Henties. Just like you said, when you experience that, that’s when you know you are HOME. I am only 28 years now and my dream is to own a traveling van so that I can travel and basically live on the road traveling the whole of Namibia and Africa as I would love to explore all 54 countries in my life time. I am crazy about traveling and would also love to travel to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria, and so many other countries less travels too.
When I started to follow Itchy Boots back in 2019, used to respond like an anxious grandparent would do ("oh dear, be careful now, not too close to the ridge"), even crossing fingers and knocking on wood as if it would help Noraly to drive safe. When the African journey started, realised that I'm not worried anymore. Oh no. She's the desert queen, she can do anythin'.

My dad, who was a pilot, used to say "there is no shame in a 180 degree turn", if it keeps you out of a forseeably dangerous situation. I was glad to see you do that when the sandstorm kicked up. A better title for this episode might be "By exercising good judgment, I was NOT caught in a sandstorm"

Yes you're right it's good that all of our natural instincts are not sterilized from us buy living in this sanitary world we now live in. Noraly has more courage than most modern men . I have so much respect for her.
Whenever I travel, I try to leave just before sunrise. Really nothing better than being on the road just after the sun comes up, so I particularly enjoyed your early morning start. I was surprised when you rode past the research station as it just seemed like exactly the sort of place you would pop on into and end up taking the day's journey in an entirely different direction. So I had quite a chuckle when you found you had to turn back. Very glad you didn't try and tough it out through the sandstorm. Professional, interesting, educational, entertaining and just downright beautiful. Your work just keeps getting better.
Good you quickly decided not to try moving through the sandstorms. My desert experience in oman says it is very risky indeed.

I have been watching you since you bought the bike in India, you videos have always been good but now they are simply spectacular. Like a someone said about a great photographer being compared to someone who just takes pictures, "a picture someone who just takes pictures proves they were there but an artist with a camera takes you there". You take us where you are, thank you for taking us along.
I have also seen every chapter since the first bike in India and they are all interesting. I enjoy even more when some else appears, it's interesting to see those conversations. Actually I even ended buying the same bike, my Himalayan!

This was a special episode. We did exactly this route in 2016 in our old Land Rover, staying a couple of nights in Gobabeb. My wife did part of her pHD research here. Thank you for putting a smile on our faces.

I'm always relieved when I see that Noraly has uploaded another travel video. Because this means she managed to arrive safely and in one piece again. SA and NA aren't the safest places on Earth to travel through. And that's without even taking the natural risks into the equasion.
Namibia isn't comparable to SA when it comes to clenlines and safety.
There are many places worldwide that are not safe. Just watched a vlog of another female biker who was robbed in broad daylight in a small town in Australia. Unfortunately bad people are everywhere.

Gorgeous scenery! In many ways, I see similarities with Central Australia, where I'm from. The deserts range from classic sand to gravel, saltbush . Many places with extraordinary rock formations. Everyone knows Uluru, but places like Mt Connor and The Pilbara. New to the channel, but fallen in love with it!

I was last in Walvisbay or Walvisbaai when I was 13 years old on my way to South Africa with my family as immigrants.
Now I am 77 living in the States and have been for decades.
I have always been so curious about Namibia, and thanks to you now I want to go and spend some time there,

Be very carefull driving in Nam tbat time of the morning or eveningd, chances of a Kudu jumping towards your headlight is very high. One of the biggest tips when traving Nam. Dont drive dawn or dusk. Safe travels

I’m always amazed at the fact you travel alone and do the majority of your travelling off paved roads. To be in desolate areas most of the time riding a motorcycle is pretty unnerving to me. You are definitely a different breed for sure. I sure appreciate your journeys and the fact you record them for us to enjoy without the hardships of enduring the loneliness and whatever Mother Nature has to throw at you. : It is because the edge of the world is always way out at sea and the effect of the dome always makes it so that people on ships and their instruments always leads them along and eventually away from the actual edge so you never go over or even actually see the edge. Magnetic fields and parabolic effects to keep everyone safe from falling off the world. {That is my story and I am sticking to it. :) }

I have yet to hear a good explanation as to why the days are longer or shorter at the poles, and the days are always 12 hours long at the equator.

Don't believe for a second that Noraly's videos are adventure motorcycling. They are introductions to world geography and geology. I follow each day on a map and it helps me wonder at the differences and simularities to the desert near my home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Thank you, Ms. Schonmaker for sharing your Itchy Boots.
Love your series on Namibia, as born and bred Namibian, my government should make you an ambassador! And hats off, the roads you are taking are isolated and difficult (for the international viewers, we actually have the best tarred roads in Africa), and what you just entered into is called East Wind at the coast, the winds are brutal! I love the desolation, kind of beauty that you feel rather than see. They say your brain reset when your eyes rest on the horizon. I think it's true. The walk in the Kuiseb was worth the change in plan.

In July 2007 we camped one night at Mirabib. Alone with our 15y old son, freezing at night in our roof top tents. Alone with the full moon rising while the sun was setting at the opposite site of the horizon. The shadow of the earth was visible ... Kudus were grazing in the distance, grasses everywhere then. The silence made it an even more magic place. Thanks Noraly for passing and stopping right there. Bedankt hiervoor. Veilige reis verder!

Another thing Savannah is perfect for is filming; there's no big windshield or instrument panel in the way and we get a very generous view.. Of course, sometimes a good windshield might be handy against the evil Dr. Sand!
I have been riding this type of terrain for the past 40years when ever I can (in Australia) and now I am accostomed to being alone and looking after myself no matter what the challenges. In fact I just crossed the tropic of capricorn on another adventure which will take me to the top of my country then down through the middle of it over two deserts. I have now detected a change in Noraly in a way that tells me she is becoming more confident in dealing with her surroundings which is good to see. If you are watching her travels and wonder what it would be like to do that, don't think, just get out there and do it or you will forever regret not taking control of your life.

Any adventure biker would have guessed by now that stay at research centre was already planned.... respect level for her is now 99%...still far better than others who even plan their crash...
I've been to most of those places in a 4WD and that was tough We drove through a sandstorm, so could relate very well to the dangers you faced. I can't imagine how hard it is on a bike. What a wonderful series. It has brought back amazing memories.

There she is!! The sunrise with the moon and stars ... its great getting out early having no one on the road. Normal in Namibia, not always the case in Europe. Youre thinking so much on that apple pie you forget where you're going .... must be some good pie... the sign of capricorn ... true position ... details details, love it. Getting sand blasted, how do your air filters look like when you replace them ... great music, shadow riding, mirror scenery reflection ... always great features ... That's Noraly, time to eat her apple pie lunch she finds a picnic spot where there is nothing in a 150 mile radius. What a sight again, Drony is out again ... what a landscape. Suggestion-Maybe by the next garage stop take a small bag of standard screws when hitting the bumpy trails. Remember the tightening up job the guys at the diamond camp did for you. Good call avoiding the sand storm. How can a group of isolated scientists say 'no' to you ... happiness is when you're in a dried up river bed full of rocks ... great music with Drony following you, a little spec in that huge desert. what a great looking bay town ... Ride careful, stay safe ...

I don't see any palm tree nor a single dromedary but this environment reminds me the southern part of morocco where the fixed sand dunes are called "erg" and the desert of stones and gravel is called "reg". It goes whithout saying that riding a bike on a long distance through those " regs" and "ergs" is realy demanding and daunting. Bravo Norally and Savanah !! Thanks for sharing.

I spent years in the Saudi desert. Except for scuba diving in the Red Sea there really was little of interest to see.
I'm not fascinated by sand dunes and occasional rocks. I'm trudging through Namibia with Noraly because she's the best in so many ways, but this particular journey is not my favorite at all, but she's doing her best to find something to see!
I do love the kindness of the people. I would have loved to see the incredible stars you can see in the desert. Oh, the animal footage was great!
Gobabeb was my home for several months in 1987, staying in the same accommodations you did. Spent magic evenings watching the sun set over the dunes. How I envy your visit.
