- I bought a woodland! Now I can build more Bushcraft shelters, and get some more winter camping trips in. The forest is a mixture of trees with the majority being mature beech and oak with some Hazel and silver birch mixed in. Looking forward to making plenty of Bushcraft/off grid films here for you guys!

I'm disabled now, so have not been out in the woods for a few years. When you asked "hear that?", as you walked through the crunching fallen leaves, I could smell the forrest. Thank you. That was a wonderful moment for me.

Man i feel your pain and your struggle within.I hope life gets better for you my friend .My days in the only place of solitude I had are done due to breaking my neck and it really sucks but atleast I had over 40 years of being out there doing the things.I'm now learning leather craft and soon I'm gonna start learning basic Blacksmithing just taking some time to get the tools and a proper anvil.
@@dougstanley7662 I'm so happy to hear you have found some activities that give you joy. I knit, and am just learning to work with clay, from a table that spans my bed. I was always an outdoors girl since young childhood - a real explorer, until about 10 years ago when the arthritis took control of my back. It seems blacksmithing could be challenging, but then it could depend on the size of you projects and how long your sessions are, right? I wish you the best my friend.
You should invest in a metal detector and see what historical artifacts you can find, be absolutely awesome if you could find something tied to that land or surrounding area. Interesting stuff.

THE most enduring & vivid memory from childhood was my first visit to a woodland
when the Bluebells were in bloom...I can see it, smell it and hear to this day (70yo).
Always worth leaving some of the dead trees standing, or fallen, if you're able to. It's fantastic habitat for invertebrates (and they are good food for many other things). Sadly too many woodlands are kept neat and tidy and this habitat is hugely in decline.
I agree with you partly ( as you correctly said “leave some”) a large build up of fallen trees can itself bring a large number of problems to healthy trees. Like parasites and certain types of rot and would say, it’s healthier for the echo system to have a managed forest. My team and I recently had to cut several square miles of healthy forest to save a much larger forest from a certain type of rot caused by lack of management.
Time for another father/son build?? If you plan on doing anymore shelters, you can do the digging!!

I thought the same, mark out the can before anything else.
As a fellow Woodland owner I really enjoyed seeing your joy at starting your journey of owning a woodland. I have owned mine for about 3 years now and found that what you think you should do to the wood is the complete opposite to what is actually best practice. So dont rush into anything with out doing research first. For example you need lots of dead wood on your land. About 30% of your wood should be dead and rotting away to put nutrients back into the ground . So dont clear it all away. I have lots of dead wood piles around which rot down remarkably quickly. Also that tree that's dead but still standing leave it. Woodpeckers and lots of other animals and insects will rely on that. Your fallen Ash tree would get you a small bit of money but I would leave it as a feature for climbing on etc and it will rot down and feed the woodland for many decades. Beech as you mentioned likes to drop its branches. Damn big ones at times sometimes 1/4 to half the tree. (About once a year on my 6 acres). I have found that wind does not seem to be such an issue for mature trees as much as the smaller trees, your blown down coppice would back that up.
Enjoy your wood. You will notice something different every time you visit and get very excited about even the tiniest of things.

The roots of that fallen tree should remain as shelter for any creatures. The trunk should be cut into lumber and used to build something, thus honoring the tree by saving the wood. By lumbering the trunk you are saving the carbon that the tree has sequestered all these years. The branches can be turned into firewood. What a wonderful resource. Thanks for the video. Jon (Ian)
Ill do a poor job of explaining it but, when trees falls down in a functioning forest as it gets broken down that also sequestors the carbon into the soil. All the bugs break it down into the soil and as long as its not disturbed it stays there.
Yes, mobile saw mill, plank the ash, or square off baulks of timber. Ash is very strong and quite light weight. Morgan cars still use ash frames in production.
Suspect ash die-back may have ruined the timber, the loss of so many majestic trees to this disease is just so sad!

I often read the concerns of George Monbiot about protecting the UK environment. If only more people were like you, and appreciated the wonder of natures and it’s years of growth and nurture. I am glad that you have this woodland.
Definitely leave at least the root ball. The fugi and moss that will grow on will be absolutely beautiful! Nature's art you know.
Brilliant. I bought one in the spring and it’s the best thing I think I’ve ever done. The advice I was given when I got mine was “don’t do anything major for the first year”. Let the seasons come and go, make notes and get the feel for it. Great news 😀
I’ll need to do a few things as some of the wood that has fallen will start to breakdown. But congrats on getting your wood!

Congratiulations Mike! Beautiful woodland! We cut relieved a few trees from Ivy in the forest of our roundhouse, but I regret it after all. Ivy provides great habitat for birds and nectar in the autumn. Your oak looks healthy and pretty sheltered, even If it would blow down, that's nature, it would create great habitat for the decomposers and new regeneration, and so the more ancient woodland vibes:) Deadwood can often be more valuable for biodiversity than alive trees, so I would thin some alive trees in specific places rather than taking the dead ash, although that would make for some great lumber wood. On to the joys of woodland management! All the best, Julius
Hi Julius, thanks for the comment. Unfortunately these old oaks are not in a sheltered place. They are bearing the brunt of the winds from the open fields and thus protecting the beautiful beech, ash and oak in the middle of the woods. The ivy will be coming off these particular trees but I will leave it on the inner trees and let it take it’s natural cause. I’ve not shown the woodland in too much detail yet but there are still a few oak trees that are alive but have blown over into other trees, these will be cut and left to decompose in nature. As for the ash, this wood is too good and straight to not utilise for something. As much as I like it, just leaving that particular ash to sit and decompose would not be ideal given the resources it yields. There are a few fallen ash/oak already which are decomposing and I’ll leave those to keep the biodiversity going. Plenty to think about and looking forward to delving more into it!

the fallen ash tree would be great turned into boards to make a cabin!! can still leave the root ball and a small part of the trunk to do it's own thing for nature, amazing now you've got your own woodland, brilliant achievement. really nice for you and dad.

Man, I can't even begin to express how happy I am for you. I've traded woodland properties for many years now and it is such an amazing feeling walking out into the woods and knowing they are yours! It is so easy to fall in love with a forest that no one can just come along and kick you out of. :) Congrats from the far west of the United States!
As for the Ash Tree. I'd keep it. Might be useful for later bushcraft builds. Certainly high enough and straight enough to be a solid half wall.

My mother's parents bought 160 acres back in the day. I was lucky enough to have lived on it in the old line shack my grandparents fixed up and added to it. It has well water, dug by my grandpa. There is a septic tank with 3 or 4 out flow things. The property has hills, a seasonal creek, and bottom land. Most of the place is covered with trees. It is a tiney forest with oaks, poplar, mesquit, cedar, percimons, Wilde plumb, black walnut, pecan, and others. There is a small pond as well.
I would love to get my own place one day. I want a spring or 2 on mine as well as a deep well. I hope to find a bigger property with a few flat areas, and lots of trees. A good mix would be devine!
I think its fantastic news that you have bought this, most people would just spend the money they make on youtube on other things but you have invested in to a piece of beautiful natural history which you will take care of and hopefully pass down to your children. Well done.

I have watched some of your survival and tarp videos, today my feed brought up this. I bought a Woodland. I was thrilled to see that it was not just a mixed woodland but ancient woodland and that you intended to manage it in a sustainable way using old methods for regeneration. as I am watching a year later you will have started on your plan for managing and in fact another video has just come up where you are tackling the big Ash and stripping Ivy from the Oaks. Good move the benefits definitely outstrip the drawbacks the bees will survive without the Ivy there are other winter flowering and early flowering plants that can supply their needs. You are indeed fortunate to have this glorious woodland. I shall be picking up and following you on your journey though many months behind. Your woodland and your decisions but very appreciative of your reading the comments and suggestions. As you said it makes sense to utilise the wood in different ways according to its size and nature. after all that is what ancient woodland is all about. Hundreds of years ago this is exactly what would have happened. Fallen trees would have been noted and plans made for their use coppicing would have a regular cycle for different sizes of wood for different uses and mature trees would have been also managed for timber with some being pruned to harvest large pieces by taking out branches and some felled. Good luck with your opening up the canopy no doubt by now you will have found some wildflowers making a reappearance and will have planted others. Keep the big grin going as you work out how you will be developing the plot and getting on with it.

If you don’t already have one you should consider adding a stock pond for fishing. Your Dad can enjoy it as well and shoot more TA Fishing videos there. I’m extremely happy for you. One idea for the fallen tree is to use the wood for a cabin or permanent shelter right there it fall. That way you use it, but it remains in place.
I‘d say leave the ash, collect branches up to arm-size, but leave alle the big parts. Micro wildlife and health of the whole system will Thank you for many decades to come! I‘m thrilled and super happy for you!! All the best

It’s one of the best things, I bought my own small plot earlier this year. Take the time to just watch and enjoy, get the feel for the wood. As regards the big ash, leave the larger limbs to rot down, leave some of the trunk at the root end and use the great resources in that trunk.
How much does it cost to buy your own plot and do you mean a woodland like this one? I'd love to have my own land 😌🙂

Congratulations! The woodlands will be in secure hands! Suggestion: I was told 1 time to wait 1 year before I made new decisions of a major nature....so...keep the ash at least for 1 full season, then decide. Allow your fantastic creative mind the joy of the exploration of what could be done. Clean out the widow makers and clean the trash....and enjoy the beauty of it all with a fire, coffee and Jacks. You deserve this.

I was thinking that or perhaps a local wood worker would like to come and slab it off to make tables or shelves. There is a company that is near me that take large old trees to does just that (and some of their slabs are massive 20+' long and 6 feet wide. Amazing pieces of wood. It's called Berkshire Products btw)

Ash Tree: Let 15 feet from the roots decay naturally, and then cut the rest up at-will to split and rive into various projects or fuel-wood, IMO.
Yes, except I would say take the straight 20ft section, and leave the roots and the upper trunk and branches behind to provide a variety of wildlife habitats. That trunk section would give maybe three dozen 20ft 6-inch beams for building projects, after a year of drying.

Superb.ive been a tree surgeon for 20 years so if I've learnt anything it's get rid of the ivy.its so destructive. While wild life do like it,tress don't.Just severe the stem about a foot off the ground an then another cut higher up clearing about a six inch gap.youve got a beautiful woodland and don't want ivy anywhere in it.

Congratulations one the woodland but please don't take the Ivy down. It's an important habitat for much more than just birds and part of the biodiversity of the wood. Wind will not be a problem as the tree is not exposed to it as you mentioned with roadside trees. Also due to the size of the ivy, it clearly shows that it is old and therefore had many years off wind exposure with no consequence.

Congratulations on being the owner of this fantastic woodland! Oak trees can live to 1,000 yrs of age, & more. You may even find truffles growing on the roots of oaks in a woodland setting. What a great place!

Oh, wow, this place is BEAUTIFUL.
I really love seeing a woodland that isn't overrun with honeysuckle. It's such a massive problem here in the US; we don't have small hazel, its niche has been hugely run out by amur honeysuckle, which is useless invasive trash that should be exterminated on sight; it's really horrible for woodlands because it kills everything underneath it. Wish we had hazel instead here. Maybe we did, before the honeysuckle came. If you see any amur honeysuckle anywhere on the property, eliminate it ASAP.
Imo you should leave SOME of the downed branches - and probably that giant ash - to rot. It's a good home for invertebrates, small mammals, reptiles and amphibians, fungus, etc, and thus for animals that eat them as well, like foxes and hawks/falcons. There's a lot of benefits to letting downed trees in a woodland decay naturally instead of all getting pulled out and 'cleaned up.' Fallen logs can also serve as fertile ground for young trees; look up 'nurse log.'
Commercial woodlands don't let trees decay, but one used for filming and camping and natural habitats should. If you manage it not for classic 'perfect immaculate tailored sanitary woodland beauty' but for greatest biodiversity and habitat free of invasive species, it'll end up looking much better, in my opinion.

Hi Mike, I really enjoy your videos, started watching you couple of years ago when I just found out about such thing as "bushcraft". Then I been watching mostly how to gain some skills, learn tricks and tips about surviving in the wilderness or during casual camping. But time moves on and now I watch such channels like yours mostly because it's very calming, looking at the nature, listening to it, to sounds of people crafting something while there is a campfire cracking somewhere, and your charisma, your character always so calming, I just want to watch and chill. And my main point is that I personally would like to see (and hear) more of you just sitting and maybe talking about something, about live, nature, anything, so it would feel like we as audience are there with you sitting by the fire, in the forest, adoring it and having a little chat about simple or not things.

Please consider carefully whether you really want to remove the ivy, apart from being really valuable for birds it is also super important for bees as ivy is one of the last plants to blossom each year and therefore can be crucial to the bee's survival in the winter. Apart from that I would definitely leave the ash tree and plenty of dead wood in general, apart from being a land owners responsibility to to look after the biodiversity, I also think that making the woodland look too manicured would not be beneficial for the feeling it gives in your videos, it would feel like filming in somebody's back garden instead of proper nature. But otherwise I'm really pleased for you that you were able to buy this lovely woodland and I'm looking forward to all the nice videos you're going to film there!
kill the ivy save the tree please
I would venture to say he will add a plant where he takes one away. There is plenty of room to add plants that feed and attract humming birds and bees.
The trees growing around the perimeter act as a windbreak for the trees standing deeper inside the woodland. There's really no need to remove the ivy from the inner trees, they are rooted good and strong. I enjoyed the magical tour, thanks!
@@ephrimvael I was going to say EXACTLY the same thing. Remove 4 inches from the ivy so it cannot re-attach (carefully with a small chainsaw works fine), from only the outer limits trees. The inner trees will look after themselves.

I hope I didn’t miss it, but how many acres is the woodland? Is it a reasonable drive from your home to get there? Do you anticipate any problems with hunters encroaching on your land? Are you and your father looking forward to spending the winter coming up with new bush craft project for next spring?
