  • The first time you see Planet Earth from space, it’s stunning; when you’ve spent 534 days in space-more than any other American-it still is! On his most recent trip the International Space Station NASA astronaut Jeff Williams used an Ultra High Definition video camera that he pointed at the planet 250 miles below; here he shares some of those images, and talks about the beauty of the planet, the variety of things to see, and the value of sharing that perspective with everyone who can’t go to orbit in person.

    The moment the music swells and I noticed my country at 3:37, knowing I was there at that instant made me comprehend that I am part of a much bigger world then I realized. It brought tears to my eyes.

    I know Jeff personally. This is not cgi and he has so much more photos way more then he is allowed to share. (nothing alien) NASA just has restrictions.
    But Jeff is a great man and it is an honor to pick his brain on all sorts of topics. Be blessed Jeff.

      shadowlang404 I don't know about orbit, but if Blue Origins keeps their current track record you'll 've able to buy a seat on a suborbital flight for probably around $5 - $10,000 in ten years or so. Which is actually a really good price. That price tag is worth a view like that.

    • @shadow404atl
      @shadow404atl 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, pass on Blue Origin after Jeff Bezo's trolling of Elon and SpaceX. Now if it was a SpaceX flight....IM ON BOARD!!!!

    • @motokid6008
      @motokid6008 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      shadowlang404
      Well a SpaceX orbital flight will cost you millions. You shouldn't care whos launching stuff into space man its not a competition. And whatever competition there is will only do good. As long as its for peaceful purposes im rutting for whatever company is doing it.

    • @shadow404atl
      @shadow404atl 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, but only to those with a large bank account to afford a trip, even to LEO. Travel to the moon is much farther down the road, unless there is a large cultural change like during the original space race when mankind had aspirations to conquer the Universe. Times have changed since then and mankind's dream has wandered away from that.....I do hope the dream to conquer space does return....but I'm not exactly confident that humankind is focused on that at this moment....were still way to self centered on Earthly things.....

      Well back in the 60's "Space Fever" was brought on for all the wrong reasons. The Cold War. It was fear. Now today we dont have that. ( Not yet anyway. China may be our next rival in Space ) So building up the RIGHT reason to go to space to explore and expand our scientific understanding a much harder thing to achieve when you dont have a super power threatening weapons superiority. It is happening though. SpaceX is defiantly popularizing things thats for sure. A good start.

    I wonder what do experts sees in these photos. I mean, I know I couldn't see what a geologist, a climatologist, or an agriculturist sees in these photos regarding the colours, the clouds, and the squares... so I wonder... I'm myself limited, I can only sees colours, puff of clouds, and shapes.

    This is fascinating. If the ISS could orbit further out at 1,000 miles Earth would look really good, and the orbit would be stable, there would be no fear of it spiralling down. However there would be problems in sending up supplies, and if there was an emergency. I think that one day we will have a space station further out, before we go to Mars.

    You might be surprised to know that a spot on the surface of the Earth is moving at 1675 km/h or 465 meters/second. That’s 1,040 miles/hour. Just think, for every second, you’re moving almost half a kilometer through space, and you don’t even feel it.Want to do the calculation for yourself? The Earth’s circumference at the equator is 40,075 km. And the length of time the Earth takes to complete one full turn on its axis is 23.93 hours.
