    NASA just released this stunning 4K footage of the International Space Station. This whole video is absolutely breathtaking.
    At 0:50 we see SpaceX's Dragon capsule.
    I believe at 3:08 we're looking at an oil tanker and its spill? Someone correct me if otherwise.

    The Dongsha Atoll at 3min 9 sec of the footage is great. It is not an oil tanker,as suggested by one viewer, the atoll is about 25 km in diameter! It was taken after June 2014, I assume, since I am in charge of Dongsha Atoll Research Station. Some big changes are happening on Dongsha Atoll, I think the two white patches to the north and northeast of the reef flat, check the video, are expanding to east part of the atoll. This is due to dying-off of seagrass beds. You guys up there could see the changes, we earthlings have to rely on periodic satellite pictures.

    • @smileydag
      @smileydag 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** 8 million pixels vs 2 million at 1080p older HD.
      3840 X 2160
      Technically, "Ultra High Definition" is actually a derivation of the 4K digital cinema standard. However while your local multiplex shows images in native 4096 x 2160 4K resolution, the new Ultra HD consumer format has a slightly lower resolution of 3840 X 2160
      1080p (1,920 × 1,080 progressive scan)

      Drum 3A www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/thumbnails/image/14648179676_db2001e0fa_o.jpg This one is awesome, i think. And for those out there that wonder why we never see stars in space pictures, it's because the majority of those pictures were taken in the day time. There's just as much light in space, probably more, in day time, as there is on Earth, and few people expect to see stars in daytime on Earth, so..... Yes I know it's a 'trick of the camera' in this instance, in space and not because the stars are hidden in day time because of our atmosphere... the point is still valid. Don't expect to see stars in daytime pictures, except the closest star, of course. *((rant for that question that comes up all the time) not directed at Drum, just hooked to this image)) ;-)

    QUESTION: In the ISS the sections were put together over a period of time to create the present structure. However, when you look at any footage of the inside of the ISS, you never see any doors that would cordon off sections of the Station if a breach in the outer structure were to occur. In other words, all of the pressure in the entire ISS would be lost, everyone would die, yet you never see this issue talked about of addressed in any way, why is that. You would think, i.e. a submarine, you could isolate parts of the craft if a situation like that occured, but not on the ISS, why is that?

    • @Warhamer116
      @Warhamer116 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      essentially, from what I understand about it, airlocks are made mechanically in a way that they can't be cycled to vent atmo, the seals between modules have pressure sensors integrated in them so if the connection starts to weaken you can repair it immediately, and the ISS uses radar to see if there are incoming objects which could penetrate the outer layer of the station and use the thrusters to essentially move the station out of the way. Any micrometeors or such space debrii gets shattered on the hull- at orbital speeds the micrometeor doesn't behave like a bullet but rather than like a explosive, meaning that rather than penetrating the station it just explodes against the hull and dissipates the force.
      Unlike submarines however the ISS isn't meant for warfare and wasn't designed to be capable of withstanding or surviving subsurface bombardment so the scenarios which are very real for submarines like breach of hull isn't too much of a concern for ISS, thus not much research was spent into it.
      It's kind of like spending million dollars to add MRAP technology to a nissan micra- you aren't going to be running into mines anytime soon when you're going for shopping trip, so why would you spend the extra time, research, weight, and expense to add technology which isn't needed for the function of the car?

      S1baar, these are *my search tricks* to find the name of a song in a video. If a trick fails I'll try the next one:
      • I start by reading the *text description* of the video - they often name the songs
      • I check if there are any *credits* at the beginning or end of the the video
      • I read the first few pages of *comments* to see if anyone already identified the song*
      • I search for online *copies of the video* and check the comments there
      • for recent music (last 50 years) with *vocals/lyrics,* I use the Shazam app or search Google with some parts of the lyrics
      • if everything else fails, I leave a *comment* on the video asking for help
      • if I don't get any reply, I try to contact the *user* who uploaded the video
      With sufficient time and patience, these tricks have helped me identify several songs in the last few years :)
      I hope this _checklist_ helps you too.
      For *more search strategies* ("tricks" :) check out my _"G+ Research Tips"_ section at
      plus.google.com/+RicardoNunoSilva/about
      * This was the case here: ***** had already identified the song

    Maybe some day soon NASA will use the Red 8K camera. :-)

    It deeply saddens me to think all of the work put into the ISS will one day go up in a fireball never to be seen or touched again.

    This is extraordinary and looks amazing on my UHD monitor. Say, if you have any openings for an old fart Systems Programmer, I'm game as long as I can have Miracle Whip rather than Mayo. Just saying... Thank you, NASA!

    Take note of how thin our atmosphere is compared to the size of our planet... If you don't believe modern human activity can change the chemistry of that thin band of gasses, please, rethink that...
