Very impressive work Tom. I'd have scrapped the piston without question but you showed there is an alternative. Good example of cold seizing so thanks for sharing.
You’re very welcome! Thanks for watching :)
you've inspired me to find some down time to clear out a whole building full of these machines and experiment!
Fantastic :)
Very good video. My son just seized up my 20 year old Stihl HL 45 hedge trimmer that worked perfectly for me for a long time. Now I'm trying to decide what to do with it. Good job.
Thanks for watching :) glad it was helpful!
Great vid Tom, I always replace the piston and rings though, especially if it an expensive unit like a Stihl or Echo. A junkyard no name, re-use like you did. Cheers!
Good call Kenny, if it was my own equipment and I could save it I would. For a customer I’d either recommend oem or good AM like meteor piston and caber rings.
Good vid mate. I can only get about $50 for a curved shaft, so if they are burned up they turn into parts pdq here
Spot on mate, same here, this was a one off for a video haha.
@Vintage Engine Repairs I do that too. I get equipment more for videos than profit all the time.
@@VintageEngineRepairsi appreciate both of you placing educational videos ahead of $$. I learn a lot from both of you. I usually have more time than money.
Greetings from Nebraska USA. 10:15AM here. 😁
👍👍
Great video, as usual - thank you. To an untrained eye like mine, how can one tell the difference between minor scratching and aluminum transfer in the cylinder? I'd hate to put everything back together and end up with the same problem b/c I haven't removed all the aluminum transfer. Here's my best Aussie: Cheers mate. ;-)
Hey thank you! :) ally transfer looks like a smudge and can be removed with abrasive.
You’ve just given me hope 😁
Haha good to know :)
I enjoyed that video. You earned a new subscriber!
Hey! That’s great, I’m a big fan of your channel :) I’m always watching and looking forward to the new content. Nice to connect with you in a message :)
Great information. I take a lot of attention to the ring groove(s). Why not clean the cylinder with paper and a hone? Take care
Great question, the abrasive can bed itself in to the soft piston and cause more problems down the line. Best done wjth a file, then a used and worn bit of scotchbrite you’ve washed a number of times!
i’m wondering how to tune a carb on a trimmer that’s already out of adjustment where it won’t start
I’d look it over, it’s likely got old
diaphragms inside the carb, the fuel line may be damaged, filter blocked etc. Once you’ve checked all that then set it to 1&1/4 turns on each screw .
@@VintageEngineRepairs thanks it’s a pretty new trimmer and supposedly someone ran the wrong gas in it i tore it apart and everything looks fine i got it to run fine and warmed up then once i shut it off it wouldn’t start back
Always! Enjoy your videos!
Thanks Bud!
A very informative video Tom, nice one
Thanks Al!
Great! 👍🍺Not that I've ever straight gassed my Stihl MS180.🙄
Haha 😂
Very interesting!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
good video Tom well done 👍
Thanks Nev!
Great job. Stihl 55 weed eater which # to adjust the H speed 10000rpm or 8400rpm
8700 - 10300 is manual recommended. I suggest starting rich and cutting with it. Lean the H until it just stops 4 stroking under the load of the grass.
Thanks much
OIL MIX 33:1 IS GOOD ?
Nice video Tom, I'll try this on a junker next season and see how it does.
What does your shirt say? 🤣
Thanks Big John! It’s useful to know, even if you only use it occasionally :)
Bahah, “dear Santa I want it all - a 3d television, a mute button for my wife and a fridge full of beer” LOL
🤣👍🏼🤣
Would this also apply to a dirt bike
It would, but a dirt bike is designed for maximum power, therefore I’d personally rebuild the top end fully. A weed eater or chainsaw just needs to function, unlike a bike that needs to be at its max capacity :)
The bubble is shot to
I honestly don’t remember now lol
You hav much to teach about rehone cylinders, baye a flexhone
Glad you enjoyed it!
Use a ball hone
Na not on Nikasil, it leaves too coarse of an edge and wears the rings way too much
How long should it idle before going full out.
I don’t understand the question sorry mate
@VintageEngineRepairs before you run it full throttle. I mean when you start to use it to cut the grass.
Oh! To warm it up, a minute or so of idle and then 30 seconds of gently varying the throttle!
& that my friends is how it’s done ! Laavvvlllyyyyy ! Take care 👍🏻🔧
You too! Thanks for watching!
A reference to the "Frenzy" movie? Laavvvlllyyyy.
