Pony motor should run steady and smooth under no load at any rpm including idle, let it warm up too, at idle before engaging main engine, the first sequence in starting is to put main engine throttle lever in no fuel, off, position, main engine should have compression release pulled and locked so it can rotate freely and build oil presure and circulate the oil throughout the engine and bearings, etc, then move throttle lever out of no fuel position to run idle, release the compression lever last, and engine will fire up with ease. In cold weather operation, the compression release will remain pulled and locked while the main engine rotates and is warmed by the pony motor coolant, sometimes up to 5 minutes or more in extreme low air temperatures. Starting a "Johnny Popper" is the fun part and when done properly is almost artfull!
JD twin diesel at idle, Best sound on the farm EVER!!!!!

I'm looking for the model of a JD with a hand starter with 2 compression valves for cylinders . Thinking 1940 or so . My grandfather had one .
Got one in the barn. When we get it out we'll post a video. Ours is a 1939 Model A.
Thank you .
Always let the big engine spin over until it builds oil pressure before releasing the decompression lever and advance the throttle..
Why in the world can't JD Diesel owners keep the pony motors tuned up? Seems like they all run like crap (like this one)!
they have a tough life, start cold, shut off cold unless its cold enough to run a few minutes
The best thing JD ever did was get rid of starting engines and replace them with electric starters on later models.
This one work for you? My 70D th-cam.com/video/3YP4s2ntnOQ/w-d-xo.html
