    Picking a favourite XTC riff is like picking a favourite child. You have to love them all, unconditionally. I'd say that the Black Sea album is XTC at their most rifftastic. 'Generals And Majors' for instance.

    • @tiernanloud
      @tiernanloud  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm a big fan of the "Mummer" album. Probably their most experimental time

      I was 10 when Black Sea came out and that chord progression on "Generals and Majors always
      Seem so unhappy 'less they got a war" is one of the greatest ever.

      Totally agree. I made a Best Tracks playlist on Spotify with XTC and the idea was to add the entire albums and slowly remove ones I don't like that much. I ended up not removing anything and just deleted the playlist. Been a fan of XTC since High School and I appreciate this video. Thank you!

    That riffing in the middle of 'Respectable Street' where Andy sings: 'It's in the order of their hedge ro-wo-rows. It's in the way their curtains open and clo-wose.....is something I could never master. I love it, even through my frustration at trying to pry it out. haha

    The beauty of XTC is that I would have chosen NINE completely different riffs (I'd have kept "Stupidly Happy"), but it still sounds AMAAZING!!! Well done!! (and made me appreciate some on your list I haven't given enough thought to!).

    Very cool. I think YT's matrix threw your clip up for me because I was listening to "English Settlement" while working on a model car last night..but seeing a young guy playing these riffs helped remind me of something. I used to say that XTC was the 'greatest band that no one's ever heard of'. I was wrong. Seems that whenever I'm around people who take music seriously, *most* of them love XTC. Musicians, music teachers, rock historians, etc. I personally was an old-school radio DJ and played drums in a New Wave cover band back then.
    So..I guess I'm saying all the "right" people know who XTC is? Oh, well. Nice chops. Now play "Towers of London" again, please.

    On 'Sgt. Rock', try leaving the D string open on that first walk down riff from 11th fret to 9th fret. That's how I learned it based on the guitar chord chart in the "11 Different Animals" songbook that came out ... decades ago with sheet music from singles off their first 4 albums. I doubt anyone would notice the difference from the way you play it in the video, but in the spirit of being accurate to the riff, it's worth a try, innit? Great work on these. Andy and Dave Gregory are both amazing guitar players but Andy's knack for making up a chord because he likes the sound makes it so hard (for me anyway) to figure out how to play a lot their songs.
