The sexual aspects in the original were 100% relevant. Basically, James's wife had been debilitatingly sick for ages, so he hadn't had a fulfilling sexual experience for a long time. Thus the nurses and Maria (Silent Hill's literal representation of his wife) are overtly sexualized to represent James's sexual frustration. Toning down the sexual aspects directly contradicts the themes of the original game. Just saying.
Sounds to me like they have twisted and manipulated the original context of these deeper psychological themes.. they're just not smart enough to pick up on those deeper aspects of storytelling and emotionally complex characters..

There is a reason the nurses and Maria are sexualized in this game. This was not done to actually please players but for story reasons. It was crucial for the narrative of the game.
It was a whole theme, that was integral to the story. A manifestation of the protagonists guilt and base desires. Changing that will make the protagonists story shallow, undermining the point of a silent hill game.

We NEED to make women wear more clothing because it's "demeaning" to have a large chest or wear attractive clothes, race swap characters because diversity is our strength, add in "brave" flags to make sure we're a known ally and give characters backgrounds that show how much "hardship" they've overcome.

As people here have probably pointed out, the reason for the sexual elements in Silent Hill 2 are inextricably tied into the story. It has nothing to do with luring in the male audience with boobies. Removing those elements shows 1) either a complete misunderstanding of the story or,more likely, 2) a will to vandalise a product to meet their own standards and/or politics. If I was an engineer and given a blueprint to make, I’m supposed to fabricate that. Can I improve that? Sure, but you contact the client first to get authorisation; it’s their part, their money. If I shipped them a part I improved without their agreement they have every right to be mad. The story here is what it is; constructed with very specific themes, imagery, and narrative. You change any of that and the jigsaw is altered, spoiling the overall impact and outcome. Yet you expect the consumer to happily take whatever they are given. We are not children whinging about stuff we don’t like. We’re mature people who want mature, compelling experiences, who, at the end of the day, are paying our hard earned money for something in the middle of a cost of living situation. Gaming, movies, even dining out, have to remember they are luxuries, not necessities. Cash flow issues will see your services among the first to drop among casual audiences. Gamers will continue to buy games, of course, to help see them through these times, but the catch is they are far more discerning when money is tight. Regurgitating this politicised crap won’t see any profit, let alone increased profit. According to a lot of comments I've seen, Angela and those nurses were made 'sexy' in the original game on purpose. It was an important part of the story; the MC was having some kind of relationship trouble and those new elements were introduced to give him some kind of sexual tension, something he had to confront/combat so he could grow as a person. It was more than just a scary game.

The reason Maria looked like his deceased wife (albeit over the top in appearance), and the nurses were attractive, was because of the MC's history with his wife and the fact that the terminal illness she was suffering with had made her both less attractive and, of course, generally romantically unavailable.

The reason we don't like Angela and Maria's designs is because it strips away from the games story, same with the nurses being more androgynes. Angela is supposed to be a doll like person, the characters appearance was about the thin venire of the beautiful woman she could have been hiding the horror of her existence within. Maria is literally a manifestation of Jame's unhealthy sexual desires for his wife, his objectification of his own wife, she's supposed to skimpy and sultry to tempt James. All of the monsters, Nurses and Pyramid head included are manifestations of Jame's sexual urges and guilt. Silent Hill 2 is literally an exploration of Jame's toxic masculinity and about him confronting it to either overcome it and grow in the "good" ending or doom himself to more suffering in the "bad" endings. With the changes they have admitted to making we know layers of the story have been stripped away and the quality of the game overall will be lower.

When she fell sick he cared for her and continued to love her deeply, but over such a long illness began to resent her. He was immensely sexually frustrated and would fantasize about the nurses that tended to her. The nurses are a manifestation of his guilt over that.
As a matter of fact, the nurse is almost faithful to the original. Mr. Ito, who designed the creatures for the original and the remake, says that lies are being spread about the nurse's design Mr. Ito designed the nurse for SH2, but had no involvement in the nurse for HomeComing or the movie of SH.

The way James instantly pulls out the metal pipe to hit is not how its supposed to be. This game is NOT about combat. It is a part of the game, but it shouldnt be satisfying. The whole idea of Silent Hill 2 was that James is suffering, and he is depressed as hell, sure he tries to survive, but not with a flair to kill monsters. The other thing is that most footage i have seen dont look creepy at all, while the original had from the very beginning a bleak, and unsettling heavy atmosphere. Somehow the old technology helped this even more as you move around in the city, you ran past all those buildings that were just there, being meaningless and mundane, but it kinda gave that flavor that you are in limbo, nothing looks interesting, everything is meaningless, empty, and dirty. When i look on the footage from the remake where James is climbing in under some garage door, the place looks visually impressive, and i know this sounds dumb (we should like impressive looking environments in games), but it gives this taste that the devs try so hard to entertain, while the og game had parts where you just ran for like a minute on an empty road or stairway just for the sake of atmosphere and hidden symbolism. I really feel like they are going to make an action-adventure horror game with an SH2 theme, but it is fairly right to say that SH2 was a phenomenon that cant be recreated as it was perfect in its place and time. There are just things you cant grab out of their place and state in history to recreate it , as it will instantly lose every aspect of its original state what made it special. The remake actually dont look bad, but its subject is just such a delicate and perfect example of something that is untouchable to make a remake of.

In OG silent hill, the camera angle faces you whenever you enter a new room and the camera pan is really slow. That's what makes the game what it is, along with the radio static whenever enemies are near. The trailer also looks too bright, the OG was pitch black and the flashlight only illuminated a small area.
The brightness is cause of the engine their using and cause they probably want it to be realistic which is why it is kinda bright, if they actually remove the radio static theyve gone mad and they arent even tryin to make a good game

Changing Maria is dire. Changing her design changes the entire purpose of her character. Maria represents James's lust for a relationship he struggled to be sexual in. Maria being enticing and being sexualised by James is a reflection of James's broken mind and not on Maria. This is a great demonstration on why any restriction is bad for art, including 'modern day feminism, representation, male gaze bad'. Sometimes, these things need to be expressed to tell a good character story, particularly one that is focused on negative aspects of human nature. We have an entirely different character now, who's existence doesn't reflect what's really going on.

There is a reason the nurses and Maria are sexualized in this game. This was not done to actually please players but for story reasons. It was crucial for the narrative of the game.
It was a whole theme, that was integral to the story. A manifestation of the protagonists guilt and base desires.

As people here have probably pointed out, the reason for the sexual elements in Silent Hill 2 are inextricably tied into the story. It has nothing to do with luring in the male audience with boobies. Removing those elements shows 1) either a complete misunderstanding of the story or,more likely, 2) a will to vandalise a product to meet their own standards and/or politics. If I was an engineer and given a blueprint to make, I’m supposed to fabricate that. Can I improve that? Sure, but you contact the client first to get authorisation; it’s their part, their money. If I shipped them a part I improved without their agreement they have every right to be mad.
The story here is what it is; constructed with very specific themes, imagery, and narrative. You change any of that and the jigsaw is altered, spoiling the overall impact and outcome. Yet you expect the consumer to happily take whatever they are given. We are not children whinging about stuff we don’t like. We’re mature people who want mature, compelling experiences, who, at the end of the day, are paying our hard earned money for something in the middle of a cost of living situation. Gaming, movies, even dining out, have to remember they are luxuries, not necessities. Cash flow issues will see your services among the first to drop among casual audiences. Gamers will continue to buy games, of course, to help see them through these times, but the catch is they are far more discerning when money is tight. Regurgitating this politicised crap won’t see any profit, let alone increased profit. Sooner or later, that wallet will be closed to you, even if you believe the market has left your audience no other choice.
All people in the Silent Hill fandom wanted was a technical update. A way to have that Silent Hill 2 experience on current generation software. Changing the characters whose appearances are tied into the actual story is an unwanted tweak. I never heard in all my years since the release of SH2 anyone “sexualising” Angela as anyone who has played the game knew her story. Indeed, I never heard of anyone sexualising Maria either. She looks how she looks for thematic story reasons and changing her is not only unnecessary, it interferes with the narrative.
I’ve seen a lot of propaganda being put around social media that certain generations want less sexual references or relationships mentioned in media because they aren’t experiencing that themselves. It is patronising.Lots of experiences are happening that we don’t get to emulate but we can understand and assimilate the concept. The issue with Angela, as I see it, is that she was never a sexualized character. They just uglified her for its own sake.
According to a lot of comments I've seen, Angela and those nurses were made 'sexy' in the original game on purpose. It was an important part of the story; the MC was having some kind of relationship trouble and those new elements were introduced to give him some kind of sexual tension, something he had to confront/combat so he could grow as a person. It was more than just a scary game.

It‘s like walking into a lovecraftian sacred realm that confronts you with what you‘re most afraid of. Be that your se*ual frustration like in James‘s case, Angelas ra*ist father, or Eddie‘s bullies. The reason Maria looked like his deceased wife (albeit over the top in appearance), and the nurses were attractive, was because of the MC's history with his wife and the fact that the terminal illness she was suffering with had made her both less attractive and, of course, generally romantically unavailable.

The reason we don't like Angela and Maria's designs is because it strips away from the games story, same with the nurses being more androgynes.
Angela is supposed to be a doll like person, the characters appearance was about the thin venire of the beautiful woman she could have been hiding the horror of her existence within.
Maria is literally a manifestation of Jame's unhealthy sexual desires for his wife, his objectification of his own wife, she's supposed to skimpy and sultry to tempt James.
All of the monsters, Nurses and Pyramid head included are manifestations of Jame's sexual urges and guilt.
Silent Hill 2 is literally an exploration of Jame's toxic masculinity and about him confronting it to either overcome it and grow in the "good" ending or doom himself to more suffering in the "bad" endings.
With the changes they have admitted to making we know layers of the story have been stripped away and the quality of the game overall will be lower.
Please stop spreading misinformation about the second game. Angela and eddie are both like james ppl stumbling into silent hill due to guilt drawing them into it. When she fell sick he cared for her and continued to love her deeply, but over such a long illness began to resent her. He was immensely sexually frustrated and would fantasize about the nurses that tended to her. The nurses are a manifestation of his guilt over that.

The way James instantly pulls out the metal pipe to hit is not how its supposed to be. This game is NOT about combat. It is a part of the game, but it shouldnt be satisfying. The whole idea of Silent Hill 2 was that James is suffering, and he is depressed as hell, sure he tries to survive, but not with a flair to kill monsters. The other thing is that most footage i have seen dont look creepy at all, while the original had from the very beginning a bleak, and unsettling heavy atmosphere. Somehow the old technology helped this even more as you move around in the city, you ran past all those buildings that were just there, being meaningless and mundane, but it kinda gave that flavor that you are in limbo, nothing looks interesting, everything is meaningless, empty, and dirty. When i look on the footage from the remake where James is climbing in under some garage door, the place looks visually impressive, and i know this sounds dumb (we should like impressive looking environments in games), but it gives this taste that the devs try so hard to entertain, while the og game had parts where you just ran for like a minute on an empty road or stairway just for the sake of atmosphere and hidden symbolism. I really feel like they are going to make an action-adventure horror game with an SH2 theme, but it is fairly right to say that SH2 was a phenomenon that cant be recreated as it was perfect in its place and time. There are just things you cant grab out of their place and state in history to recreate it , as it will instantly lose every aspect of its original state what made it special.
The remake actually dont look bad, but its subject is just such a delicate and perfect example of something that is untouchable to make a remake of.
This is such an excellent comment, I agree with you 100% I remember reading about the game in the psn magazine about how the devs had a hard drive crash that lost alot of grotesque scenes and took it as a sign from God, to tone it down.

It's not the "characters need to be hot."
It's that mature themes like sexuality and the way the characters look is intentional to the storytelling of SH2
Maria looking hot in the original has story reasons behind it, she's not designed that way because horny devs.
Angela isn't meant to look hot, but she wasn't ugly in the original game either. She just looks odd in the remake.
At the same time there is no need to make characters uglier for the sake of it, unless being a moral busybody and trying to change the world through moralizing peopels hobbies. Keeping characters sexy = authentic. Also sexy characters = sales. People like looking at attractive characters.
There are some saying the new Angela looks her age now, but again, for story reasons, she is supposed to look older than she is. The remake is also making her actual age 2-3 years older than she was originally, for whatever odd reason.

In OG silent hill, the camera angle faces you whenever you enter a new room and the camera pan is really slow. That's what makes the game what it is, along with the radio static whenever enemies are near. The trailer also looks too bright, the OG was pitch black and the flashlight only illuminated a small area.
The fog too, especially in Angela cutscenes, something feels wrong
The brightness is cause of the engine their using and cause they probably want it to be realistic which is why it is kinda bright, if they actually remove the radio static theyve gone mad and they arent even tryin to make a good game
And they make it too wet. 😂 I always thought it was dry despite there being fog. Because some place looks like burned. Some environments also look like in the Last of Us 😂. The hotel alley is also wide. It should be narrow. This game has a lot of wrong interpretations from these developers.

Whether he's right or not isn't important... the tank controls have marked survival horror, and have become iconic and trademark of the genre since Alone In The Dark (Resident Evil and Silent Hill), for the time they were perfect (since not everyone found that system comfortable is another matter)

To be fair, action as far as combat was extremely rare in the original silent hill games. Showing him running is very accurate to the original. It was more of a fetch and puzzle game.
