Bought a 1982 Olds X-body Omega new. I had to do a couple things over the next 15 years to keep it running and out of the junkyard, but I put over 170,000 miles on it and everything still worked on it when I sold it in the late '90's for a few hundred bucks to a single mom who needed transportation. These '80's GM cars were budget friendly and surprisingly reliable.
Thanks for the memories... I was gifted one of these by a elderly neighbor that could no longer drive and was moving to a assisted living facility. I had done chores for her for years and she knew I was saving for a car. It was seven years old at the time but had less than 10k miles and had ALWAYS been meticulously maintained and garaged since new. I drove it through my final two years of high school and all through college and veterinary school. It finally died when it was rear ended at a stop light. It had 256k miles and the only thing that didn't work was the cassette player. It was incredibly reliable and durable. Never failed to start or left me stranded. Hardly the best car I've owned but wasn't nearly as bad as urban legend suggests.
Vice Grip Garage would be proud of this video. haha My ''newest'' vehicle is a 1990 Jeep Cherokee XJ as I refuse to drive anything newer that I can't repair myself. I feel 1990's was when combustion engine cars were at their peak. Anything now is over engineered with ''luxuries'' we don't need. Until electric cars are cheaper and charge stations more available, I'll continue to drive the older cars. Thanks for showing your trip, hope your knee feels better. haha

I remember going to a supermarket, in Jersey City, in early 1982. Outside the entrance there was parked a shiny black Cimarron, obviously new, with a smart young man behind the wheel. Two elderly women, evidently known to him, and who would certainly remember the Cadillacs of the 40s and 50s and 60s, were loudly and determinedly telling him "THAT AIN'T NO CADILLAC!".
Thank you for the video. Great trip. That's long trip cleaned out the entire fuel system and sludge in the engine. I had an 88 for 12 years. Only issue was at the end when the entire electrical harness fried. I would get another in a heartbeat.

GM's J car was sold in Europe as the Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Ascona. The modern equivalent is the Vauxhall/Opel Insignia. GM ended up selling the Vauxhall and Opel brands to Groupe PSA so the new models are basically rebadged Citroens and Peugeots.
This V6 60 degree and the general electrónics off the engine are soo good and reliable. Here in Mexico have a lot of Cavaliers, Cutlass Ciera and Buicks with that mechanics without mayor issues prior the age of the cars

I have an 2.8 1988 s10 with the EFI and it also has a stiff Gas Pedal. The throttle bodies are just made with a certain way of spring tension so a lot of people have that complaint. Changing the decant cable and the throttle cable did not do anything so after that I found two solutions to save my right knee. 1. I was able to add a solid state cruise control from an 89 c body GM truck (not the older vacuum kind) . I found it in the junk yrd. I did a few attempts and a lot of research on s10 and other gm truck forums before I found the exact right one that could take the VSS signal from the OBD1 wires, and the 88 s10 had a specific optically generated speed signal relating to the speedometer since that was one of the first years they transitioned to electronic generated speed signals for the cars computer and speedometer operation. So it works great except that the cruise thinks the truck is 1/2 the speed it is really going so therefore the cruise can only turn on a speeds of 50 MPH or greater than 50 (most cruises are set to work at 25mph or more). #2. I added a spring to counter the tension of the throttle body spring. So it pulls in the opposite direction. I had to find just the right spring so that this did not make my idle speed increase. Now I can drive and it feels like a normal gas pedal and i have cruise on the hwy.

awesome.... In 2003 I drove a 1989 Mercury Tracer from SC to NY, and it overheated within 15 miles...LOL but I just keep a 5 gallon jug of water in the car and stopped to refill the radiator and allowed it to cool a couple of times, replaced the water pump the next week and it ran like a top till I traded it in 2007.
We got these as the Opel Ascona C. There was a sporty SRi and a 'luxury' trimlevel Berlina, 1.3L, 1.6L, 1.8L and a 1.6 Diesel. Also in 5dr hatchback. Decent cars back then.
I'll give you a fun little clue for removing oil off of the floor use the dust from a charcoal grill after it's all burned out the powder of the charcoal dust absorbs the oil like a magnet

PS - I’m a lifetime MA resident and still can’t get to Logan without taking at least one wrong turn :) I fly in and out of Manchester NH whenever possible.
I stayed at that 1st stop off the thruway in ny, the plumbing was less than stellar no water pressure, ac barely worked, on to the next car adventure 👍🏼
Holy crap I did some research on that truck accident and the 53 year old guy driving died, he was with his 12 year old son who thank god is alive and well now. They think it was distracted driving. So crazy.

VSS probably has CE light on too. Also TCC lockup solenoid on the THM125 Trans are junk. Some would intermittently lock, fail to lock, or stay locked up causing engine to stall when coming to a stop. But again lockup needs speed input to ecm to work.

Wiping down old wipers with WD-40 on a paper towel will make those old wipers work fine for a while.

It has cruise control I saw the switch for it on the turn signal stock, that's where they are on a lot of old cars.
I can't remember the last time I saw a Celebrity 2-door in such good condition. I'm guessing sometime while Reagan was in office.

The Cavalier from this generation also had a V-6. The 3.1 V-6 could really move the Cavalier. I had one.

Ive had severals 2.8, 3.1, 3100 ect...they all stay that cool when movin....traffic will get up a smidge over 1/2 and the fan start there
