    isn't a mullet haircut short on the front, long on the rear... so logically that bike should be called a reverse mullet right...

      I can see your point, but it’s not meant to be taken in the physical sense. It comes from the mullet saying “Business up front, party out the back”. The 29 is the business, and the 27.5 is the party!

    I threw a 29" front wheel on my Bronson (w/150mm 29er fork) & REALLY like it. The 29" front tire has great grip & rolls over small stuff better. The 27.5" in back means shorter rear end & better bum clearance. Might not be as fast as full 29", but for me, it's more fun.

    I just got a Process X mullet and also own a Nukeproof Mega 290 and while in theory they should be very similar, they are very different. The smaller wheel makes the Kona more fun on the narrow quick turn trails here in Florida. The Nukeproof is better for big stuff, but doesn't turn as well or climb. I actually like the Kona Process X better.

    I have my Specialized Fatboy also set up like a kind of a "mullet" by using 4.9 at the front and 4.0 at the rear - the almost one inch difference in width makes also a noticable difference in diameter.

    an additional benefit of that smaller wheel in the back will help on steep climbs. Ran a surly 1x1 10 years ago with a 29 upfront and 650B in the rear. It would climb like a billy goat

    So I’m not going to talk about haircuts, for one reason I have no hair, and the other reason is this is it conversation about wheel sizes. I recently purchased a mullet lake for my new carbon Stumpy and borrowed the rear wheel from my Santa Cruz 5010. This bike is now a shredder. It’s fun, it’s fast, and extremely playful. I’m not certain how your times on the 2Niner were faster but either way it’s cool having options right! Thanks guys, all of you on the channel are freaking awesome! Including Anna

  • @gpearce11
    @gpearce11 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I've always considered the Mullet more to do with the rider of the bike than anything else. Everyone knows that if you want a more flickable bike 27.5 tends to more agile, but if you want more roll-over speed you want 29.
    Unfortunately, for some smaller riders, even if you want the faster roll-over of 29ers, the rear wheel can get in the way on descents, necessitating 27.5. This is of course where the mullet comes in, allowing 29er front roll-over and 27.5 seat clearance (which is why the Mullet is rapidly replacing 27.5 on DH race bikes for riders under 5ft 6in, who were previously unable to rider 29)
    If you're someone that can easily fit on a 29er, there's honestly not much point to the mullet bike, as if you want 29er speed you might as well go full 29er, and if you want 27.5 agility you should just get a 27.5.
    We see that in this proven in this instance as well, because between the two options Blake prefers the mullet, but he's been very vocal in the past about his preference for 27.5.

    • @camwells9726
      @camwells9726 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might be of benefit to me , I’m a short legged long torso guy . Only 5 10 but ride a large to get the comfortable reach I like . But do get contact on descents with the back wheel on my 2020 nukeproof mega .Being eyeing off the new mega mullet

    • @gpearce11
      @gpearce11 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@camwells9726 You sound like a textbook case for why 27.5 and Mullet bikes should still be readily available in size Large (you can argue against XL, but I've seen a few brands only offer up to Medium).
      In you specific case, owning a Mega 290, we see another textbook case of why it's great when brands offer mullet conversion kits, be they new swingarms (like the Mega) or new linkages (e.g. Stumpy Evo), instead of requiring an entirely new frame (looking at you Canyon).

    • @camwells9726
      @camwells9726 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gpearce11 I’ve never ridden a mullet, so no idea how it affects any other areas of ride quality . But overall have a preference for 29 over 27.5 these days , but if you had asked me 3 years ago I probably would have said 27.5 :) .

Previously with my 27.5 set up, I ran a fox factory fork and whist the bike runs a 160mm standard travel, I changed out the air spring to a 170mm and run a bit more sag. You have to remember that you lose head angle on a hardtail as the suspension compresses. Whereas on a full suspension bike, both front and back sag together so the angle remains the same. This is why I run more travel at the front. With the 29 set up at the front, I have changed out my air spring to a 150, but only yesterday I put a 160 back in and I’m trialling it out today. As far as how the thing rides, this has been the most significant upgrade I have done to date. As you know with hardtails we rely on the front end so much, this allows me to hit much bigger drops and rocky sections, with a heap more stability. The bike is still able to jump pretty good as well. I hope that helps.

Even though I specifically chose the 26" option, it appears to be a 27.5" fork as there's just over an inch of vertical clearance for my tire. i had mulleted my yeti sb6c for the past 2 years
    and have just ordered an new set of forks and front wheel to go back.
    its definately faster for decents but not as good for climbing, tho that might change if the bikes a dedicated mullet

    What would be really interesting is trying a 69er Mullet Bike with a 29 inch front and a 26 inch rear.

    With the right tools (I used a simple bike tool kit th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L that you can strap to the bike) it's simple to assemble. As a 270lb guy looking for a way to get more exercise that's easy on my feet I have been impressed by this bike. The tires ship with air in the tires, but before you ride you need to pump them up som more, but once you do you can ride with confidence. You'll definitely want to replace the seat if you're going to ride for any real distance, but that's the case with most bikes. I'm loving it and it has given me a hobby from my youth back.

    Everyone is trying a mullet bike (79er) for downhill, but I'm interested in a 79er hardtail trail bike. My local trails have a lot of elevation change and a lot of baby head rock embedded in hardpack dirt. I climb a lot. I ride a 29er and I think that a 27.5+ rear could be the ticket to a better ride. A mullet would be more spongey on the climbs, but possibly not so bad in a hardtail. And you still have that give from the plus size. And if you size your tires right you still have the improved roll-over of a 79er (compared to a safety bike setup).

    Rode the old big hit back when that was a mullet with 26 at the front and 24 at the rear... It was horrible, the rear wheel just hung up on everything! It wasn't even playful because it weighed a ton. I quite like the idea of trying a modern big wheeled mullet though... I'm in the market for a new bike and can't decide between going for 29 or 27.5. I ride both 26 full sus and 29 hardtail at the moment and like things about both, but I haven't tried 27.5... too many choices these days!

    I have tried to ride 29ers but my legs are just too damn short for me to get it to work, it feels like i'm spending all my time riding buzzing my bum on the rear wheel and i absolutely hate it. on my 27.5 have i buzzed my bum a couple times but it haven't been much of an issue, it have happened less than 5 times during the time i have owned the bike which is over a year.
    I personally think that a mullet would be the perfect bike for me, but i don't have the money to buy a new fork, a new wheel and a new tire unfortunately but i'm very happy with my 27.5 so i'm good

    Well, we all know that timed results are the only thing that matters. Everyone chooses the bike they ride based on what is going to be the flat out *fastest* . How much fun they are, and how much the back tire rapes you are not factors that anyone should pay attention to...
