Excellent video, very well put together. The footage taken by the firefighters at 5:48 is chilling. They had no idea they were walking into an enormous bomb, and at that point in time they would have been hard-pressed or outright unable to reach a minimum safe distance before it exploded even if they did come to realize it. Pretty good except he kept calling Ammonium Nitrate itself an explosive. Which it is not. It's an oxidizer that requires a fuel source. The fuel source is the explosive the AN is the source of oxygen or rather Nitrous oxide that makes the explosive a chain reaction not needing a container. Pipe bombs burn the air inside and create a pressure explosion. ANFO for example can be poured into a banana peel and be more dangerous than dynamite. Basically instead of creating pressure that ruptures, HE bombs release an incredible amount of energy at once. More similar to a nuclear bomb than a pipe bomb.

I'm actually amazed that more people weren't injured or killed. This made me think of the Halifax explosion that occured in Canada in 1917. Two ships collided in the harbour. One was loaded with explosives. It was one of the largest human-made explosions prior to the detonation of the first atomic bombs. The north end of Halifax was wiped out by the blast and subsequent tsunami. Nearly 2,000 people died, another 9,000 were maimed or blinded, and more than 25,000 were left without adequate shelter. I see this explosion in Beirut and it looks so huge and I wonder how much larger the one in Halifax must have been.

What's sad about ammonium nitrate incidents is they happen at fairly frequent intervals. Even the smaller incidents cause mass damage and tend to happen after a series of unusual events line up to set up a detonation of bulk AN. You can absolutely bet on the fact this incident will not stop the next. Ammonium nitrate just loves to misbehave when the correct conditions are allowed to stack up.

This is SUCH a good production, just absolutely amazing work melding video and photo media with 3d modeling. Stellar work here. It's damned disgusting to me that there was such gross negligence happening there for so many years. Anyone could spend a mere two minutes on Google and turn up incident after incident involving large amounts of AN detonating directly due to extreme negligence. One would think that this sort of thing would be easily prevented, if only those responsible for ensuring the safety of these well known hazardous materials had been doing their jobs.
The fact that detonating cord was stored there should not be a side note - in my opinion, it is a fact of major importance. Det cord uses PETN, a secondary explosive that can easily be brought to full detonation in larger scale just by heat. It is a very poweful explosive, that sureöy has acted as a kind of booster to set of the full AN detonation. Without det cod, the ignition of a pure AN detonation seemed hard to realize, but WITH it the whole story makes way more sense. There is no such thing as a "slow" detonation cord btw.
There are certainly two speeds in military use, I've used them in the Royal Engineers, quite apart from different speeds of fuse. The quirk here is that the percussive effect is central to the line of "rope", and can fail to detonate if it doesn't terminate in the explosive. Still under 20k... I don't think the majority of people understand how incredibly impressive this video is, especially if you have never worked with CAD programs at all
Holy hell. I was just wondering the other day there are so many "compilation" videos on TH-cam if it is possible to algorithmically stitch them together to create a cohesive map. And apparently my idea was old by about 2 years !! excellent video by Forensic Architecture team.

This is so cool. I mean, the explosion wasnt, but the way you guys made this video is incredibly interesting. I love the half 3d model, half video perspective. Super impressive.
Beautiful 3d visualisation and modelling, kudos to the whole team. However I did not expect a single photograph can reveal the exact coordinates of the photographer by correlating neighbouring buildings, that was very spooky and unnerving to watch. It’s a privacy nightmare.
This was absolutely fascinating on so many levels, I scarcely know where to begin.... so I won't. Kudos to your team and thank you for all you've done. Hopefully this will help those still in need of answers and, especially, compensation, find both.
This is the first clip we've watched from your channel, and we found it very well done. My husband's dad was an architect all his life and my husband has done years in engineering. It was good how everything was shown on a CAD model and patched together from the footage obtained. This whole thing is a prime example of gross negligence and absolutely no regard to safety in the storage of potentially explosive materials. It seems like nobody knew what else was in this warehouse when they just basically dumped it in there and forgot about it.
Very informative, until I viewed this, I was unaware of the actual location of the storage, believing the storage location was the tall silo structures adjacent to the actual location. I was aware of the fireworks stored near, but not the car tires. The people and country of Lebanon have suffered so terribly in the last several decades, this horrible tragedy, that was completely avoidable, is one more awful event to be foisted upon the people of Lebanon.
I saw a video where the man was filming the fire. The woman heard a jet coming and said please let’s go inside now, Not 1 second before the blast. I think the ammonium nitrate was given a helping hand. If you search you should find the video on you tube.
Very interesting video! 👍🏻 I remember when this happened there was a video of a wedding reception just outside the epicentre. The wedding party was fortunately unscathed but the shockwave was filmed barrelling up the street toward them. I wish I could provide a link for the video. The fact the bride was uncommonly beautiful made that particular video stick in my mind. Many other souls were not as fortunate as that group of individuals. Very sad state of affairs.
I was morbidly fascinated by this explosion from the first news of it happening. As soon as I saw the colour of the smoke after the main explosion, I knew it was ammonium nitrate, or, as I've known it in the mining and transport industry, Nitropril. I lived and worked around central Queensland, Australia for many years. It is a major coal mining area in Australia with mostly Open-cut mining being employed. Nitropril transport and storage areas were a common site, and the main manufacturing plant for these explosives was located south of Rockhampton, the main city in the region, and Gladstone, the export hub for the coal, and a chemical manufacturing area. The plant (at Bajool) had entry requirements that were arguably as strict as a high security prison (I've delivered to both). I did Dangerous Goods transport training (for road and air) and was graphically educated about the dangers of Ammonium Nitrate and other potentially explosive chemicals and compounds. Anyway, I wanted to say thanks for this video. It is very comprehensive.
My exact thought when they showed that footage. Way too close. EDIT: Looking at the news reports, the entire fire brigade from the footage at 6:00 was killed. Nine firefighters and a paramedic.
2:27 it's kinda clear from this footage what was going on. Source of the fire: the piles of tires. The fire then spreads to the firework piles right across it. The fireworks detonated, flying all over the place and some reached the ammonium nitrate sacks and kaboom...
A lot of the people recording these videos didn't make it. Could say they literally died for this footage. I'm glad you were able to use it in such a respectful educational way.
partial recorrection - ammonium nitrate does not combust as it is only an oxidizer but it can spontaneously decompose by itself if at a high temperature---- Here is the full reaction of that explosion.--- NH4NO3(s){white powder in bags before} → NO2( g){orange smoke} + H2O( g){water vapour} let me just ay this was a great in depth video
Great work. Let me note that when people upload videos to TH-cam, the videos that appear on TH-cam are not always accurate when compared with "true real time". From my experience, uploading a video can impact the speed of the video (frames per second) by a few percentage points. Did you have to re-synchronize the uploaded videos' speed with each others'? I've had to do that.
This is perfect. Some days we'll put together all the thousands of pieces of video into a 3D simulation and you'll be able to walk the holodeck inside this.
In India, Chennai...the day when the Beirut explosion happened, many local news channels also reported the presence of Ammonium nitrate chemical storage in the Chennai port ! Which meant that Ammonium nitrate is a very common chemical substance....and it could possibly be present in many places and ports . This just sends chills through my spine. 🥶
It amazes me just how much valuable information was collected to allow such an impressively accurate and detailed mapping. Documentation ovetall is becoming much more detailed and precise thanks to how accessibile good quality cameras have become. The 2020 explosion is possibly the best documented large scale detonation incident of all time.

...and to think that all that was done with a simple 80286, 5-25Mhz turbo speed button PC.... absolutely amazing...
The only thing more astonishing than this video is how this channel has fewer than 10k subscribers. Incredible work!
2 years and still under 10k.
That shockwave is incredible!
Most impressive analysis video I have ever seen on TH-cam. Thank you to the algorithm for recommending this to me and kudos for the whole production team!
This level of detail and cohesion should be standard in any investigation. I am so impressed
¡Gracias! Impresionante 👏🏾 Después de 4 años nos siguen afectando. Gracias por la explicación tan clara y profesional. Saludos 🇵🇷
Such a tragedy but the way you broke this down was really amazing. Very cool 3d tech
This is one of the coolest videos I’ve ever seen, it’s like the Visual Investigations I enjoy but for an explosion... keep it up
Great analysis! Forensic Architecture should collaborate with Bellingcat, there is a lot in common in the work of these two groups.
They already have. Look at their videos.
Seeing the frozen frame of the initial fireball that instantly appeared shows how massive it was, larger than the building.
To think this could’ve been avoided if the people responsible weren’t so negligent boils my blood.
What a professional, amazing and remarkable video, your talent, sir, is inmense.
This is so cool. I mean, the explosion wasnt, but the way you guys made this video is incredibly interesting. I love the half 3d model, half video perspective. Super impressive.
I have to say, this is probably the best reconstruction of the events and storage area I have ever seen.
Unbelievable analysis. Job well done!
Beautiful 3d visualisation and modelling, kudos to the whole team. However I did not expect a single photograph can reveal the exact coordinates of the photographer by correlating neighbouring buildings, that was very spooky and unnerving to watch. It’s a privacy nightmare.
Wow this is really impressive also RIP to the guy filming at 4:57
Yeah saw that and wondered if he is still alive. They did get his footage
@@deadspeedv there was a lot of firefighters that died unfortunately So it wouldn't surprise me if the cameraman died which sucks
This was absolutely fascinating on so many levels, I scarcely know where to begin.... so I won't. Kudos to your team and thank you for all you've done. Hopefully this will help those still in need of answers and, especially, compensation, find both.
wow !! the amount of work that you guys did is mind-blowing! and I thought building a resource block model was something complicated 🙄
Have you never seen a grain silo? I grew up in St Louis Missouri
and I learned, early, what a grain silo is.
@@zapa1pntobviously not🤓
I saw a video where the man was filming the fire. The woman heard a jet coming and said please let’s go inside now, Not 1 second before the blast. I think the ammonium nitrate was given a helping hand. If you search you should find the video on you tube.
Very interesting video! 👍🏻
I remember when this happened there was a video of a wedding reception just outside the epicentre.
Wedding berute
I did see the video that you mentioned shortly after the explosion.
@@davidgold5961 She is very beautiful though!!
That was tragically brilliant and gorgeous work.
THAT is forensic artwork.
Very well done in your research and an excellent job in communicating clearly what happened.
If schools taught with this kind of perfection, everyone would be a professor. This video is A M A Z I N G!!
I'm still into minute 1:20 and man, I'm astonished with that job. Let's see what more things you have there. +sub here.
EDIT: This is a masterpiece.
I am impressed by your effort to visualise and explain everything. It was truly interesting, thank you!
Very good job!
RIP whoever is filming at 5:01
My exact thought when they showed that footage. Way too close.
EDIT: Looking at the news reports, the entire fire brigade from the footage at 6:00 was killed. Nine firefighters and a paramedic.
Mu mu mu multikilllllll
This analysis is amazing and I hope that in 100+ years it used as a very accurate detailed account of events for future generations.
Excelente trabajo Post explosión, saludos desde Colombia.
10/10 for the quality of the presentation
Quality video 👍
I wish you could do this for the World Trade Center or Chernobyl
partial recorrection - ammonium nitrate does not combust as it is only an oxidizer but it can spontaneously decompose by itself if at a high temperature----
Here is the full reaction of that explosion.--- NH4NO3(s){white powder in bags before} → NO2( g){orange smoke} + H2O( g){water vapour}
let me just ay this was a great in depth video
This is honestly one of the best videos in terms of quality on youtube in general.
well, can we do the same forensic research to 9/11 case?
It's been done, just not this fancy.
wait a few more years... may be the us govt will release even the planning of 911 and how it went exactly according to plan.
Ngl... from a Datascience and -visualisation perspective this channel is extremely impressive.
Amazing work! And I have never seen a video this popular with zero down votes :)
Which presents no problem by itself as long as its stored correctly
It amazes me just how much valuable information was collected to allow such an impressively accurate and detailed mapping. Documentation ovetall is becoming much more detailed and precise thanks to how accessibile good quality cameras have become. The 2020 explosion is possibly the best documented large scale detonation incident of all time.
Can the team have a look at the events of September 11th by any chance?
Wow This is some really cool stuff! The way you put things together is insane.
this some nerd sh*t but in a good way! really interesting
**removes cigar to speak** So THAT’S where I left my tires, fireworks, and ammonium nitrate. Oh well.

Perhaps the coolest analysis video I've ever seen. This is better than all the CGI in Mission Impossible type movies.
This is such an incredible video with so much work put into it. Much love
It's stunning, the level of carelessness with storing ammonium nitrate in such a way, it was only a matter of time before this was going to happen... and fireworks in the same building!!
It’s crazy how different the explosion sounds in English.
Excellent quality assessment and presentation. All for public use. Great job.
that immense detailed work that was put into this video 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
