  • If the sheer number of twiddly things on the slot.it SCP controller (1, 2, or 3) have you running for simpler hills, fret not! I'll hold your hand through the treacherous waters of this powerful, and widely misunderstood slot car controller.
    But seriously, it's not that complicated if you only change one thing at a time, and pay attention to what effect each control has on the car. In the end, only putting one in your hand will help you learn how to use it.
    Note that all these features/functions are more or less the same for all versions of SCP controllers, regardless of what kind of slot car you're racing with them with a few exceptions (such as no brake adjustment for some kinds of digital racing.)

    The NSR cars pull up pretty good so i find the brake adjust makes a massive difference there, thanks for sharing this it will help a lot of the boys at the club work out their new controllers

    Greg, I am in the midst of selecting a controller. This video is a great explanation of the Slot It controllers. Thank you. I am not any closer to deciding but this was a big help. So much going on at first glance. You really simplified it for me.

      The SCP is a great value, IMHO. To get the kind of control over the throttle with other brands costs 2+ times the price. Most people dis the SCP because they don't find the controls intuitive (while never using the options on their $500 controllers ;-), and/or they don't like the light trigger. Since the SCP uses a hall effect sensor for trigger detection, there is no friction of a coiled resistor or wiper board. The trigger itself is very light, so the spring can be very light and still be effective. Guys who've been racing since before this was possible are used to the "zippy" feel of a coil or wiper, and the accompanying stiff spring. Since I pretty much started racing with an SCP, I can't stand those things. ;-)

      @@ggaub thanks for the comment. All of the knobs and buttons look intimidating but you explained it very well. I understand how people could get use to the friction and the noise a controller makes.. I use a Truspeed digital controller on my home track and a wireless Frankenslot.. so I am use to it.

      @@twolinesslotcars TBH, I don't use mine for digital racing other than oXigen, mainly because the need for power to the controller is a bit clunky. It can't be wireless to the D132 Wireless+ receiver, so it has to be wired, which requires tapping into the power. But, for analog racing (or oXigen, or SSD using the ARC Pro), it's fantastic. I assume you're looking for an analog controller to race with a local group?

    one thing i liked the most is that you are able to actually reprogram the whole curve in 4 points on the trigger, back when i had an SCP-2, these things are quite versatile in options

    You call it wasted motion but it's actually called a throttle dead zone.
    You tune in a throttle dead zone because the human isn't capable of fine adjustments during a race.
    When you pull the trigger, the car is more capable that you realise it is, so the car shoots off and crashes.
    The dead zone caters for your twichiness and the car's super ability.
    The car reaches a later location on the race track before it launches the power.
    There's a time delay you set into the throttle response.
    Humans aren't capable of doing 50 calculations per second and a throttle dead zone time delay feature is a good assistance feature.

      I've found that people have much different driving styles than I previously believed. For the same car on the same track, some people prefer a "twitchy" response, and some need a really slow one. The point of the video was less about what settings are best (which is different for every person, with every car, on every track), but HOW to adjust the settings and WHAT they do. Most people are afraid of this controller because they don't understand how to get the most out of it. Now that you know how to do it, you can use an SCP and make it work the way that works for you. :)

    I just got an SCP-1, it's my first SlotIt controller, I got it on a whim, I'm used to using a Synapse. Your run through is very useful and I see there's some really handy features.

      I used it for the first time tonight on our routed club track...and love it! Why aren't these more popular? I've only seen one used on very rare occasions but I'll be using this old one on a regular basis.
      I tried curve and linear and prefer linear as you can adjust the maximum speed.
      I prefer sweep brake over regular brake even though I've not used it before.
      6 races, 6 wins and not really any slower than with my ££££ Synapse controller, in fact the cars felt easier to drive the same speed.

      Thanks! A lot of the stuff you just kind of have to FEEL by driving the car around, but I know so many people that needed the basics that I had to make something to get them started on the right foot. :)

    This prompted me to pull my SCP1 controller back out, and give it another try. I even consulted the manual. I have a completely different opinion of this controller now. I'm really liking the power trim and sweep braking. I'm still not quite used to the trigger pull, which is different from the controller I've been using, but I still managed to knock 0.1 sec off my lap time on a 6 sec lap, and I think I was also more consistent. I.e. less sliding, and fewer deslots.

      It's actually got a throttle dead zone feature too.
      You set a time delay for when you pull the trigger to when the car launches itself down a straight.
      You install a throttle dead zone to delay the car's launch down the straight cause the car has more ability than you're capable of dealing with.
      The driver gets excited during a race and a throttle dead zone caters for this fault in the driver.
      You can tune out the throttle dead zone feature but you'll be slower without it.
      Humans aren't capable of perfect throttle timing, 100 times in a row.
      The dead zone feature takes care of human faults.

    Great Video thanks. One thing I would like to add, is that the Linear/Curv switch is a big difference to how you set the knob, the max knob works completely different. At least in mine (SCP-1) If you put it in Linear, the max knob (the little one) works as if you set a knob to your power source, giving you more or less voltage at the end of trigger motion. Useful if you have a kid and do not want him to use the car full power, even if he pull the trigger completely. But… if you set the switch in Curv mode, the max knob, works completely different, you will always have full power at the end of the trigger motion, and what you are changing is exactly what you teach us in your video, you change the curve of power (you simplify it perfectly saying that you move where the middle of the trigger motion is) Thank you a lot!

      That's true, but only if the two dip switches on top are in the correct position. With the dip switches in other positions, it acts similarly to how it does in CRV mode.
      The SCP2 has a different way to get into "kids mode", and the SCP3 will have another/different method. I intend to make a video explaining how to access and use this power limiting (kids) mode in a future video. I'll probably also try to better explain how that knob and those switches effect the power delivery.

      @@ggaub Didn’t know that!, I only have this SCP-1, thanks a lot. One question, just in case you know… I have only one of these controller, because my kid use the professor motor controller, he likes it more just because the resistance the controller have in the trigger, I wanted to buy a second SCP-1/2 or 3, but I am not sure if it is possible to change the spring… I don’t know if exist a spring that is a little bit harder than the default one. Because the SCP have no resistance because of the magnet that use instead of friction, I thought that may be the friction could be emulated changing the default spring for a harder one. Do you know if that can be done?. Thanks a lot.

      @@eduardocominguez5173 Certainly, it can be. It's just a spring. You'd need to disassemble the handle in order to remove the original spring. The hard part will be finding one that will fit properly and offer a stronger resistance, but not too strong. I don't have a recommendation on where to find such a spring, or what kind would be a good replacement. That's a common complaint, though, so it's possible some google searching will result in something more helpful.

    I just got an SCP-2 for my Carrera track; seems like brake level has no effect (set by CU), which is unfortunate.

      Yeah, it would be nice if the brakes could be adjusted, but Carrera didn't make an allowance for that. It's the same for the other toys systems, though, so don't feel too left out. ;-)
      If there were a way to adjust brakes from the controller, I'm sure slot.it would have included it. But, at least the throttle control features can be used to obviate the need for changing the power to the car at the CU, at least, once you get the hang of all the settings. :)

    Forgive me. I’m fairly new to slot cars. I purchased an analog set then went digital just a short time ago. It seems to me, this controller mimics some of the digital control unit functions, such as speed and break settings that you can now take advantage of for analog tracks? Great video, new to your channel, looking forward to exploring your content.

      For any kind of racing, quick and easy access to throttle controls such as sensitivity and braking at the very least, is ideal. While using menus and settings and things will work in a pinch, it can get to be a bit of a hassle when you have 6+ racers who each like different settings. The SCP controllers are modular, and so have combinations that work with almost all analog and digital slot racing systems.

    Really good explanation. Thanks. I have the scp1. Isn't it so that in LIN + standard mode the blue knob just sets the max. Speed. In other modes you can set the second "corner" in the curve with it.

    Great video, easy to understand the use of the knobs. Haven’t used it for a while since moving to Carrera, question: what do I need to be able too use it with Carrera? The digital cartridge?

      Yes. SCP has been Carrera Digital compatible since the first Digital cartridge. I have a few of them and have used them with D132 racing.

      @@ggaub would that cartridge part number be the SCP201e? That fits into the SCP-3? How about wireless? Looking and the best option, including a wired controller Dave showcased a few weeks back and a wireless Frankenslot controller.

      @@thor8640 Yes, that would work. The SCP3 would need to have special firmware installed, but that can be done over your mobile phone/tablet easily. To make it wireless, you'd need to add the CRI, which is probably the way I'd do it, as the two wires for the digital cartridge are inconvenient to say the least.
      I also have a RamJet-X for Carrera Digital. It's corded, but it's a great controller.
      I've never tried the Frankenslot.

    Thanks Greg, very insightful! So did I understand it right that the arrow buttons and manual brake button only have an affect in analogue racing?

      They do have some function while racing analog, but I did not describe them. Of course, they're using for lane changing and braking in digital. In analog, they all do something different with brakes. The label on the controller says what, but from memory, one of the arrows will set braking power to 100% while you hold it, only activating when you release the trigger. The other will set braking to 100% for the next time you release the trigger (press and release the button, and the controller knows to use 100% next time you release the throttle), and the round button immediately activates brakes according to the brake knob setting. Give it a try!

It's not the same across all systems, so you can't simply say that's what those buttons do for all of them. What digital system and race management program are you referring to?

      The title of this video is the name of my controller. Google will help you find it if you want one. There are MANY car brands. Check out some of the slot car retailers you'll find when you look for slot car controllers. slot.it, NSR, ScaleAuto, RevoSlot, Thunderslot, and many others. Between just Scalextric and Carrera, I prefer Scalextric because they are lighter and move quicker as a result. In slot racing, top speed is only useful on very large/long tracks. For most tracks, quick acceleration and braking are more useful, and a heavy car as Carrera cars tend to be, will only result in less of those things. Check out some forums like slotforum.com or slotcarillustrated.com to really dive into the hobby.

    Hi Greg, I have just purchased an SCP-2 controller and the problem I have is with out pushing the trigger I have constant power to the track, for eg…if I put a car on the track it takes off flat out with out touching the controller with everything turned fully down.
    I am running a Carrara evolution setup. Would be great if you can help. Regards Shane

      Sounds like a mismatch between what kind of cartridge you have, and what kind of track you have. What cartridge did you get? What power track does your Carrera track use?

    Hi Mr. Gaub, I just purchased the SCp-2 for analog scalextric track use. I ordered it along with the correct 3 wire pig tail for the Scalextric power base. I installed banana plugs on each wire and plugged it into my pig tail but the controller is dead.........What have I done wrong?

      Do you remember the specific analog cartridge you bought? You put red-red, black-black, and yellow-white, I assume? If not, what is your "pigtail" and connector at the track side? Finally, where did you get this from?

    Hello Greg and thank you for your excellent video. I have a couple of questions, maybe you can answer them. I have been looking online but I didn't find much information about it... The thing is, I have been using a SCP1 controller for 10 years (I am still using it regularly), and I wanted to know if the SCP2 and SCP3 are better than the first slot.it controller. From what I understand they have newer and better technology. The second thing is, we always make races on analog, but some slot clubs are already starting to celebrate races with the digital Oxygen system. I wanted to know as well, is it possible to use the SCP3 both in analog and digital? The information at the slot.it webpage is not very clear about this... If I finally buy the SCP3 I'd like to use it as well for analog because it's the system we use most of the time. Thank you once again.

      The SCP1 is still a great controller. The SCP2 adds a simple 3-way switch on top for the curve mode, and a trigger that can be longer for 2 fingers, and finally, the ability to recalibrate the trigger itself. The SCP3 adds built-in oXigen wireless support. I wouldn't suggest a person upgrades unless those things appeal to them.
      Yes, the SCP3 can use the analog cartridges without any special changes needed. Just remove the battery (if you use it for wireless/oXigen) and plug in the analog cartridge.
      If you're considering joining in with some oXigen racing, I'd suggest buying the SCP3 rather than getting the oXigen wireless cartridge for the SCP1. It's not much more expensive to get the SCP3, and you'll gain those convenience features I mentioned above.

Just one last question, would it make much of a difference if I also get a new analog cartridge for the SCP3 or would it be the same if I just plug the cartridge of my old SCP1?

      @@GuillermoLC You should be able to just move the analog cartridge from your SCP1 to the SCP3. Which analog cartridge do you currently use?

      @@ggaub I think it's the original cartridge that the SCP1 has. I bought the controller 2nd hand 10 years ago and I didn't touch anything of it. As for the reference, I don't see it written anywhere in the controller nor the cartridge...

      @@GuillermoLC Probably the normal analog club cartridge, then. If you ever feel the need for a little more power and braking, the High amp, aka "METAL" cartridge can make a small difference.

    Thank you for the video. I'am from Holland (Europe) and thinking about buy this controller. But I hear, that there is a problem with the connection in XLR connector. Have you any idea or soluution with that ?( Forgive me my bad englisch) Frans.

      I've not heard of any problem. Can you tell me where to find reports of that problem? I've used my SCP controllers with a variety of connection types, and XLR is my preferred connection.

      @@ggaub Thanks for the reaction. One off the members of my club has buy this controller.He says, that it will not work with the xlr connecotor. You have to make an extra step ( fuse or something) before it will work properly. I am not that technical, so I don't no exactly what he have done.

      @@FransP1955 It is possible that he has the wrong kind of cartridge for the track. Slot.it makes a variety of cartridges for the SCP handle, depending on what kind of track you will be racing on. If he got the wrong kind, he might have needed to make an adapter to change the wiring to the controller.
      For the race tracks I race on, I only needed to connect the cables to the correct pins of the XLR connector, and it works fine. No special fuses or electrical tricks necessary.
      If you're interested in this controller, ask your track owner what kind of power it uses... The main difference is if it's common positive (negative polarity, like Scalextric or Ninco set tracks) or common ground (positive polarity, more common with club tracks). Then get the correct cartridge with your SCP and make sure the wires go to the correct pins of the XLR connector.

    Thanks! I am just getting back into the hobby after a 45 year hiatus! I really needed a good description of how these new controllers work and what might be applicable for me. I asked this question to Steve over at SCC and maybe you might be able to answer ... being an engineer, I am wondering why a manufacture has not created a GENERIC wireless controller for analog? Seems very plausible to me that there could be a transmitter in the hand controller and a receiver device at the driver's station that would allow this to be created?!? Any thoughts?

      That's exactly how I'm using the controller in this video. That's an analog, Revoslot, car and my track is in analog mode. The SCP3 shown here is communicating with a slot.it CRI (wireless receiver) with a high amp SCP cartridge installed in that, which in turn controls the car on the track. The SCP controller system is modular so that they can make the handle generic, and the cartridges for specific types of racing, including various analog connection types, and digital systems.

      @@ggaub OMG! I definitely need to duplicate that! That is GREAT NEWS! I am recreating the old Batman TV show episode with the massive 4 lane Revell track. I have just about everything in place and just waiting to begin the remolding of my retirement home out here in Las Vegas which will have a dedicated Hobby room for my slot car layouts. Having the wireless controllers would make live 10x easier going around that massive layout! Where did you purchase your equipment from? I thought Slot Car Corner would have everything and Steve sounded clueless about this being available and suggested that I solicit some of the different controller manufactures on designing one! I just purchased two midlevel Professor Motor controllers THIS WEEK,! In fact one of them I haven't even tried out yet! I wish I had known earlier!

      If SCC is your preferred local hobby store, then ask him to order in those products. Otherwise, get them from somewhere else.
      To be fair, there's another option from Scorpius Wireless with their controller and "WAM" receiver. I'd recommend getting the USB dongle as well, so that you can make sure and keep the controllers up to date with firmware. I have their controller, which is OK, but I have not used the WAM.
      The slot.it SCP3 firmware can be updated with any recent mobile device and their app, which you can see in another one of my recent videos.

      Carrera make/made analogue wireless controllers, Scorpius do a controller that works with everything. I am not sure anyone else does straight analogue wireless controller. Of course all the digital stuff can be analogue wireless.

      Whatever controller you get must be compatible with your track's controller connections. If you're using a club track version of the Professor Motor controller, then the Scorpius or Slot.it solutions will both work.

      In fact, it does. The braking adjustment doesn't work, as that's still programmed into the car, but all of the throttle adjustments work, and there are buttons for lane changing. You need the digital cartridge for it. I have used mine on D132 several times.

      Not directly, no. To use the SCP with Carrera Digital, you'd need the slot.it Universal Digital cartridge, which is wired. To then go wireless, you'd add the CRI, which is a wireless receiver that you plug the wired cartridge into, thereby making a wireless link between the controller and cartridge.
      The SCP3 cannot connect to the Carrera Wireless+ receiver.

      You can with the "Metal" high amp cartridge, which I think has a 50 amp limit, I believe. That cartridge also has the ability to have a "blast" relay wired in if desired.

      Yes. Depending on what kind of track, there is a cartridge that will work with it. However, the wireless is not directly compatible with the Carrera wireless+ receiver. It would have to be a wired connection to work with a Carrera track, whether analog or digital.
