A little bit of history of Paroty Interactive:
Back in the 70's there was a comedy group called The Firesign Theatre. They released a number of records lampooning contemporary culture and were genuinely funny. As time went on and the vinyl record died, some of the members of Firesign tried to adapt to the changing media culture. This led to Paroty Interactive. By their own admission Paroty Interactive were not trying to make games, but interactive parodies of modern culture.
While I'm a big fan of Firesign, I will say Paroty Interactive software was mostly a fail. But I will give them credit for helping to inspire the rise of flash games in the early 2000's. You have to remember at the time they were releasing "games" the internet was new to most people, and nobody was doing anything like they were. That doesn't make them funny, but it does make them innovative.

I took a scriptwriting class in high school. One thing the teacher said that really stuck with me was that you should never make a parody of something you hate -- the bitterness always seeps through and makes your parody unfunny. I think the main problem with the humor in this game was "joke by committee" though.
Parodying stuff you like is a good reason so many Mel Brooks and Zucker, Abrahms, and Zucker movies turned out so well. When they parody a movie or genre, you can tell they have a fondness for the originals. This results in a good-natured parody instead of a mean-spirited one, and they tend to hit the right marks and are funnier and way better for it! Watch movies like Airplane, The Naked Gun, Hot Shots, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, or Spaceballs and you'll see what I mean.
That's sounds like great advice, and also explains why so much of what passes for humor these days just isn't funny.
I think their "myst" parody kinda had this issue a lot, tbh. That game just felt like a third grader doodling a picture of someone they don't like and drawing arrows to it saying "fartmaster." This one had a bit of that style of humor, but not nearly as bad.
So basically "comedy" in 2018? lol

Windows 98 did it's job for awhile, I used it until XP too, but I remember towards the end I was getting frustrated with it. I had to reinstall it every like 6 months because it would get really buggy and slow. There wasn't really any updates back then like there is now.
Pyst was actually somehow worse.
Imagine the same minds working together to turn Myst into just a bunch of toilet humor whilst slightly editing the screens of Myst island to be covered in discarded beer cans, cigarette butts and whatever else. Say what you will about the original Myst, but it's pretty obvious that Pyst just kinda wants to cash in on that game's success.

I meant to mention it, but this is actually a Windows/Mac hybrid CD. So you can "enjoy" it on System 7 and such.
The rivalry between Microsoft and Apple reminds me of Spacely Sprockets and Cogswell Cogs from The Jetsons. Pretend Bill Gates is Cosmo Spacely, and Steve Jobs is Spencer Cogswell.

He outright states that there was plenty of material at their disposal from Microsoft's shitty business tactics during those years but the "game" is a repetitive juvenile fart joke that gets old fairly quick. But I guess some idiots would rather dismiss the entire video entirely just for the sake of their delusions.

Okay, fun fact for you: In both this and The X-Fools the actual ART and PROGRAMMING were done by none other than WayForward! Yes, as in the creators of Shantae, Contra 4, Duck Tales HD, Mighty Switch Force, Double Dragon Neon, Sigma Star Saga and many more. Indeed, Matt and Erin Bozon, the actual creators of Shantae are did do some of the art for this "game".
...yeah, WayForward's PC games were not so hot. They really didn't get good until Xtreme Sports on Gameboy Color.

I remember seeing the X-fools games in the bin of a video store back in the late 90's (not sure if Winblows was there too) wasn't good enough to be at at place that sell software or video game
Played about an hour (two playthroughs to make sure I didn't miss anything), a few hours editing, a couple writing and research... probably 10 overall, which is actually not too bad for a software review for me. And yeah, I feel dirty.
Alright, seeing the MS Word-Up box with a man walking with a boombox was a pretty funny visual gag, although the voice-over ruined it.
I'm sorry LGR, but that Steve Jobs impersonation was actually pretty spot-on. Probably the only slightly redeeming thing in this whole package IMO.

Geez, its frightening to think this somehow got to market. By that logic, there should be thousands of flash animators from the noughties who ought to be rich by now, because this REALLY reminds me of all the flash based Windows "parodies" that were popular on Newgrounds back in the day, most common in the early noughties though some were made later on and they still appear now and then and some of them actually are kinda funny, though most are more or less the same "jokes" displayed here and sometimes even worse.
I think the flash-based games were superior because they were endearing in their simplicity and you didn't have to pay money for them. Having one big "game" just takes the joke way too far.

When I first heard of this, I expected Internet Exploder. But no, It's Internet Exploiter and Winblows Exploder. Internet Exploder would have been better in my opinion. Every website would violently explode.

they also could have given you a blue screen, then a reboot sequence that runs for one minute and fifteen seconds, then gives an entirely different blue screen, with different coding, then another reboot screen. but make it part of the game itself so that it only LOOKS like a reboot. youll end up tearing your pc down to the bones and rebuild it twenty times before you figure out the game is set to boot first before even windows due to a single line of code the game wrote when you installed it

It was $30 if I remember correctly. But just because something is "cheap" doesn't give it an excuse to suck. Honestly, I didn't think it was funny back then either, and looking back at other people's reviews/condemnations of it online, I wasn't alone.

The added D would have made it into a far more effective pun so I'm legitimately stunned they didn't do this.
I'm gonna speedrun The Roll Ahead, because my new thing is speedrunning such obscure games that I can get a world record with no competition. It's lame when you spell it out like that, but this is what I do now.

There was an old flash game that was "kinda" like this. I think it was windows XP 'really good' edition, but that was more like a game, and it entertained me as a teenager. It was obviously also free since it was a flash game. Man I feel sorry for anyone who bought this thing.
Why the hate? This is GENIUS. Gates and Windows were absolutely hated in the 90s and Microsoft's monopoly and the power of terrible software lives on today. Feels like this is being reviewed in the context of today instead of the 90s.

I actually remember playing both this and Star Warped when I was younger. I like them both for nostalgia but if I had to pick which one I prefer more it's Star Warped because of how big a Star Wars fan I was.
I love the timer on the bottom right corner of the screen. If it says it's a waste of time who am I to question it? They knew it was bad.
Pyst sounded like an interesting idea from what I'd heard of it (the Myst island after a shitton of people walked through it and scribbled notes on how to solve all the game's puzzles on the walls and just vandalized shit,) but definitely not something I'd actually pay money for.
Of course, judging from this video, the version that exists in my imagination is probably a lot better.

I've played Pyst. While the concept is funny (the Idiot's Guide to Myst, complete with "pull all the switches except for the one between the sunken ship and the and you get the last page" speedrun shortcut), the execution is far from it.

What an odd moment in time this was. I was still playing pajama sam and mario type to learn so I wasn't quite aware of the controversy surrounding the OS software. Now that I'm older it seems like the people worrying about the monopoly were doomsayers. I wonder if the demonizing of windows is the main reason Apple is seen as a positive luxury product?

Oda Swifteye Same boat here. Although aside from huge fixations on Myst, Pajama Sam, and dozens of other similar games there on, I spent a majority of my childhood sick in the hospital, blind to what was happening in the world - also being around 3-7 years old, born 1993.

Apples CPU and motherboard architecture was designed to do work tasks very efficiently with very clear streight forward processing, so they were fast and efficient and reliable at what they were designed to do, but incredibly poor at doing anything else. Windows was made for Intel PC Architecture CPUs and Motherboards which were far more versatile and flexible, BUT not as efficient, because the processing wasnt as direct. Microsoft did have a bit of a nightmare to create an OS that could do work tasks but the super flexible Intel architecture made the programming more messy.
Ah, the first LGR video I've stumbled upon... considering that it's so full of despair I find it weird today that it made me laugh back then. Anyway I am glad I've stuck around.

Late to the game with my comment but this was a different era. If you believe some game reviewers out there, they will say gaming didn't exist on computers until the 1990's. Which isn't true, the first video game was made on computers in the 1960's if memory serves me correctly. But the genres of pc video games were not well defined at this time but we're taking shape in the 1990's. Obviously there were RPG, RTS, and other developing genres at the time like "Doom clones" which ultimately became FPS.
At the time of this product is when home computing became affordable and discreet GPUs were in their infancy. So for the general populous, this was their first experience with products like this called Interactive Software. They were made to promote the capabilities of home computers coming with standard CD drives and sound cards which were not standard just a few years prior. So there were many products that used FMV video in CDs in conjunction with the evolving sound card landscape. Some were cute but mostly junk. I will say PYST was my favorite of them all with the performance of John Goodman

I mean obviously someone wrote it, someone okayed it, two people performed it, they programmed it into the game, but like, why? I don't understand the purpose of that. And if the purpose was "because it was a joke" then that's even more confusing because how the hell is that a joke

Nah, that's an insult to Parroty Interactive. Even though the jokes in this are shit, at least they amount to more than showing a character from a popular movie for a few seconds and dropping a cow on them, and everything ties back into the overall "Microsoft sucks" theme instead of going off on a tangent just so they can say "Hey, this exists! It doesn't have anything to do with what we're parodying, but it exists!"

I stick with PCs, but PCs don't have to have Windows. I use Windows for gaming and Ubuntu for mostly everything else.
Not really, Ubuntu is a much better OS to attempt data recovery in and more stable than Windows. I get about 3 customers a week who bring in their Win 10 devices because an update bricked their OS.

I remember having this on my bookshelf at work, but I have zero recollection of ever running it.
Since this was released in 1997, around a year before the First Edition of Windows 98, I consider this better than Windows ME (0:45)
