Mama Scorsese is such a good actress for someone who wasn’t an actress. I heard that scene was mostly improvised, so her reactions are perhaps genuine, but she contributes the the conversation in a great way. Good work Mrs. Scorsese!
Great movies have great ironies: In Goodfellas we see Henry who adopts his mob family over his real one, but he never truly belongs among the mobsters. He doesn’t have what it takes to be a true gangster: when they kill a made man, Henry is there, but never participates in the actual beating and killing; he only (ironically) does the dirty work of digging the grave. When they have to dig up the corps, Henry literally doesn’t have the stomach for it as he has to stop and vomit, while the other two make jokes about eating peppers and sausages. A stark contrast. Throughout the movie, we see Henry as a thug, but never a true gangster. Among psychotic man, he is always the voice of reason, somehow trying to control a given situation with reason and by doing so, clearly showing that he doesn’t have what it takes in a world where everything is solved with violence. In fact, we never see Henry ever killing anyone, nor even in a fist fight. When everything is said and done, he turns on his family and disappears. He calls the rest of us schmucks, but we see him as the quintessential schmuck. Martin Scorsese, throughout his gangster movies, always demonstrates that the mob are ultimately bozos in a circus who kill or ditch each other on their way down.
The movie shows how the Mafia like to think of themselves as family. But what the young naive Henry mistook for a family was in fact a business. Jimmy wasn't afraid to kill his "family" when it benefitted him, Paulie had no problem abandoning his "family" in their need. It was all about the money. I think that's part of what drove Henry to betray them
Interesting that the only time he uses violence is in his domestic life- against the neighbour or on his wife. Never is he violent in his "professional" life.

Pesci was great in this film but was more deserving of an Academy Award for his performance in JFK. I'm not trying to nitpick. Excellent analysis.
Henry was laughing at maury getting chocked out because before that scene the commercial says his wigs can handle hurricane winds but jimmy easily knocks it off by putting a chord on his neck xD
Good review! Another crumbling moment was when Karen secretly visited Jimmy in the third act and he tried to have her killed, but she caught on to that. It seemed as such a naive move, but goes to show how little he thinks of this woman, trying the bare minimum to take her out. He underestimated her, and kept playing this fake role to his demise.
Henry Hill was a always smashed near the end of his life. He was a frequent guest on the Howard Stern show and they always made him look like a drunken fool.
This some brilliance that shows the difference of detail from Goodfellas and the godfather the whole wedding sequence is longer than Henry's childhood sequence
"1) Never rat on your friends, and 2) Always keep your mouth shut." Yeah? What about "Never murder all your friends", huh, Conway? Also, "Never murder a made man, never help your psycho friend murder a made man, just because he hurled a mortal insult by telling him to go home to get his fucking shine box." All these people have the emotional intelligence of a 2-year old. Stunted, with real guns!
Thats the whole point of the movie, Gangsters pretend to have rules only to break them as they see fit. They see rules as justification for their poor behaviour and life choices.
Yeah whatever. It's all BS anyway. Give me a break. What are they going to tell you? If you get caught tell the cops everything and make a deal so you do less time? And all that advice to Henry did no good whatsoever. He ratted on everyone because he was facing a very long prison sentence.
"And all of their daughters were named Marie". This film is one of the greatest of all time; from the music to narration to cinematography, I love this movie. The movie did the book "Wiseguys" justice, painting a picture that not everything is not what it seems. The glorified violence, pious greed, and merciful theft sucked me in. I'm right there with the action getting sucked into the nuanced music placement per scene and the carefulness of each scene. Martin should have won this back in 1990 but I was only 3 when this movie came out. I appreciated this film sometime as a teenager and I can recite lines from the film from the film. It's obvious that you deserve what you get when you get what you deserve. This is not a negative or positive critique. However, it shows the lengths of obtaining what we want most in our lives only coming close to really deserving it. Are we ever deserving of the lifestyle we deem worthy of obtaining? I think this is one trope that is missed often (the narrator of this video touches upon it briefly in the beginning when Henry is a teen). We feel for Henry because we think/know he deserves the American Dream that ultimately becomes his American Nightmare. The feeling of belongingness closes the gap of this deservedness. It is this reason among many others that I love this movie. It examines so much of our own capacity, capability, and culpability with the people we most associate.
Yes. There is an important earlier scene where Club Owner asks Paulie for ‘help’ and they become ‘partners’. To call him a ‘waiter’ is a bad miss by the reviewer.
@@JacksMovieReviews though it didn't happen in reality, it would be twice as scary if the Guy was built like he was in reality Tommy Desimoni was actually 6.2ft and was built like Rocky.

The music in this movie. My man. But then I'm 38, and grew up listening to the music of my Mother. Not that I don't love the Grunge of the 90's, or other things from the Dresden Dolls to The Airborne Toxic Event or George Watsky, but nothing is as pure as these 'Oldies'.
Beyond doubt. One of the greatest ever American gangster films ever produced. Liotta,Pesci and de Niro chemistry is sublime. Up there with the first two Godfather films. That's for sure. 😊👍❤

I interpret that last scene where Tommy fires a gun into the camera a little differently. I interpret it as Henry reminiscing the life he had as a Mafia gangster, his "rockstar days". Henry doesn't really display an expression of fear, so much as one of nostalgia if that's possible to express.
There are many good points here but the one biggest problem i could see is when you state that Henry is is losing his love for the Mafia, but this simply isnt true because Henry states that his biggest problem when leaving the life is that he didnt want to leave the life, he still loved the life. But over all this is a good essay on this film, One of my favorite things about this film is how many different ways it can be interpreted. Ive watched this film to many times to count and i still get the same feeling of wow everytime i watch it.
That's your opinion, I like Godfather better, that movie is just out of the world, keep in mind that's like the first classic I watched, but I ain't going to lie the first time I watched it was slow but the second time it was amazing.
I always liked how he used colours in this movie - notice 05:07 - they EAT from a table that has a very peculiar red almost "glowing" - exactly the same "glowing red" of the first scene, when they stab "Batts", and - AGAIN the same red "glow" when they dig him up back again after 6 months - i.e: they live and sustain themselves, from murder and the misery of other people.
If you’ve noticed an uptick in views, that’s me watching this video at least three times a week. (Currently working on my own crime screenplay.) Great work!!
Great video. I especially like the parts from the movie being presented in order to clarify key points of the analysis. Like when Ray Liota says: "_______________ " and Joe Pesci replies: " __________ " And then DeNiro enters the scene: "_______________" Man, really great lines
@@manuharter6382 Well, when he first uploaded the video, you could hear the tracks. But then TH-cam probably cut them off. And the uploader did not re-upload with subtitles afterwards
supertacticalbacon Pretty sure tootie was a made guy, and Vinnie who they show a few times in the movie. And some of the other guys in Paulie's crew from when Henry was a kid were probably made guys but they don't specify.
What a great film review/analysis! Your video is both straightforward and comprehensive, and it also highlights some aspects that I definitely missed while rewatching this masterpiece.
Great review, I learned a lot. I'm sure you were forced to remove the dialogue but if you could put subtitles in it would prevent this issue ruining the context.
I think the drugs is the turning point in the movie. Without that cash, jimmy might have killed him off also. The money was just too good to pass up. But in doing that, he was doomed to failure. He would eventually get hooked and get caught. It saved his life by giving him a choice later: rat on his friends or die. The only person jimmy would have let live without that is tommy. What I never understood was paulie allowing jimmy to kill them all off. Isn't that a huge waste of manpower? Did paulie end up telling jimmy that they had to seem legit so to tie up loose ends? I also feel bad that tutti ends up vanishing in the movie. The movie has so much conflict on varying levels. It's incredible.
Jimmy wacked all those guys because of them possibly being rats, but also because he wanted the money all to himself. I'm not sure if the real Jimmy even asked for permission to wack all the robbers as most or all of them were only Lucchese associates. I have read stories of people claiming Jimmy had Tommy wacked which is ridiculous because according to Henry the only time he saw Jimmy cry was when they got the news Tommy got wacked.
Yeah whatever. Gotti was dealing drugs. That's why he killed Paul Castellano. He realized that Paul was going to find out what he was doing, so he figured he would kill him first before Paul had him killed.

It seemed as such a naive move, but goes to show how little he thinks of this woman, trying the bare minimum to take her out. He underestimated her, and kept playing this fake role to his demise.
Can you fix the audio of the movie
Seems to be working fine for me.
Jack's Movie Reviews I can't hear anything from the movie,I can hear your voice
ho weijian
That is bizarre, maybe try it with or without headphones in.
Jack's Movie Reviews I agree, each time u say something important, your voice gets muted
ho weijian happens with me too
Henry Hill was a always smashed near the end of his life. He was a frequent guest on the Howard Stern show and they always made him look like a drunken fool.
This some brilliance that shows the difference of detail from Goodfellas and the godfather the whole wedding sequence is longer than Henry's childhood sequence
I can't hear the dialogue from the film.
Try it without headphones or with different headphones-it works fine for me.
Doesn't work for me.
Jack's Movie Reviews yeah from about 8:00 on the movie audio is silent...before 8:00 is fine tho
"1) Never rat on your friends, and 2) Always keep your mouth shut."
Yeah? What about "Never murder all your friends", huh, Conway?
Also, "Never murder a made man, never help your psycho friend murder a made man, just because he hurled a mortal insult by telling him to go home to get his fucking shine box."
All these people have the emotional intelligence of a 2-year old. Stunted, with real guns!
Thats the whole point of the movie, Gangsters pretend to have rules only to break them as they see fit. They see rules as justification for their poor behaviour and life choices.
👍👍👍👍👍👍!.
@@punjabilaundde9893 The movie WITNESS TO THE MOB proves that. NO LOYALTY!
My Favorite Movie ......I Have Seen it at Least 50 Times and Never put Some of Those Links Together .......Good Video man .......
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed!
My favorite too
Just one correction, I believe that is the club owner, not just a waiter (i.e. an employee) that Tommy berates and beats over the tab.
Yep-you are totally right he is the club owner. It makes Tommy a bit more intimidating!
Glenn Highcove, yea! I noticed that!
For the people watching the video and wondering why half of the audio is missing is likely bc the video was likely claimed so he had to edit out the audio. He should of added subtitles though.
"And then he kissed me" best use of a song in a scene in any movie ever... Anyone agree????
This movie particularly the first third is full of staggeringly good utilization of music
Agreed. It went so well with that scene.
Something to note is that no one except Paulie in Henry’s crew is actual mafia and Tommy was being made a soldier.

One of the greatest movies ever made!! I always watch it whenever its on TV.
I wish the “good times” part of goodfellas was longer, but I understand the story necessitated it
Thanks for playing the soundtrack throughout the video! Made it feel like watching the movie
It's so fast paced and kinetic, dialogue and chemistry between the characters, musical choices are perfect and really set the mood of each scene
No. It's not the best gangster movie of all time.
It's the best MOVIE of ALL TIME -- barnone.
Behind "The Godfather"... LOVE both, for entirely different reasons...
Awh man, I was getting ready to slap a punk. Then I read the second line...
BOOOM!!! Somebody had to say it!!!!!!!!!!
thatonedrewguy the good the bad and the ugly
Zero Cool. That is a great one!!
Beyond doubt. One of the greatest ever American gangster films ever produced. Liotta,Pesci and de Niro chemistry is sublime. Up there with the first two Godfather films. That's for sure. 😊👍❤
Whenever I hear Joe Pesci, my brain automatically reminds me the Greatest comedian I have yet seen George Carlin!
"I pray to Joe Pesci." I remember that joke too.
fantastic analysis! keep up the good work
+swagmasta Thank you-I'm glad you enjoyed!
Splendid! Thank you so much for your work!
Would be really nice to see review of Scorsese's CASINO!!

As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a Goodfeather.
Man, the jokes and references you never got as a kid.
you mean gangster
@@jessicapinkman-hd4bw Nope. I intentionally was quoting Animaniacs.
My favourite line from the movie is ‘hey henry heres a wing!’ Makes me laugh every time
you will get a 5+star for tremendous work excellent....

More realistic and in my opinion better than the Godfather
True. The godfather was still great, but it felt more pretentious.
Period
That's your opinion, I like Godfather better, that movie is just out of the world, keep in mind that's like the first classic I watched, but I ain't going to lie the first time I watched it was slow but the second time it was amazing.
@@cs-ke1byhow was it pretentious?
This is literally a breakdown of the film. You should change the title
Check One he is breaking it down and explaining why it is the best . . .
How else is he going to elaborate idiot?
You change your name to idiot.
You mean to tell me he broke down the film to show how it’s the best gangster movie of all time. What a HUGE surprise.
Check GS because you can’t really just say it’s the best with no defence and no breakdown? goddamn idiot
Who's excited for 'The Irishman' ?
Jeremy Nothing it was amazing!
Im gonna get da papers, get da papers
Good ole Henry Hill, his late-life notoriety was mostly Howard Stern's doing.
One of my favorite movies. The acting, soudn design, music, heck, all of it. Martin's one of my favorite directors. I'm a film buff, and I'm blind.
Wasn’t a waiter, he was the owner of the joint
This movie is on par with both godfather movies
I think Goodfellas is better than The Godfather tbh
@@joyasaxena9976no Godfather is far better
Technically Henry Hill was never in the Mob , he was associated with them but he was never a made man
The “Layla” scene gives me goosebumps every single time.
I'm gonna go get the papers, get the papers!
You forgot to talk about that "what is life" by the great Harrison
Such an amazing film and great review
Thanks Ramsey, very much appreciated. Nice profile picture BTW
such an amazing album..
I always liked how he used colours in this movie - notice 05:07 - they EAT from a table that has a very peculiar red almost "glowing" - exactly the same "glowing red" of the first scene, when they stab "Batts", and - AGAIN the same red "glow" when they dig him up back again after 6 months - i.e: they live and sustain themselves, from murder and the misery of other people.
one of my faves
If you’ve noticed an uptick in views, that’s me watching this video at least three times a week. (Currently working on my own crime screenplay.) Great work!!
damn the editing in this is appalling! I kept thinking something was wrong with my speakers
Great video. I especially like the parts from the movie being presented in order to clarify key points of the analysis. Like when Ray Liota says: "_______________ "
and Joe Pesci replies: " __________ "
And then DeNiro enters the scene: "_______________"
Man, really great lines
Is that a bug or is that on purpose

oh, I never noticed that the mafia depicted here is, like "once upon a time in America" (by Coppola) a jewish mafia
piero san giorgio That was a Sergio Leone flick
I seem to always confuse Coppola and Leone... thanks!
Goodfellas is about the Italian mob. None of the characters besides Paulie and Billy were actual members.
supertacticalbacon Pretty sure tootie was a made guy, and Vinnie who they show a few times in the movie. And some of the other guys in Paulie's crew from when Henry was a kid were probably made guys but they don't specify.
piero san giorgio once upon a time in America is by far the worst mob movie.
What a great film review/analysis! Your video is both straightforward and comprehensive, and it also highlights some aspects that I definitely missed while rewatching this masterpiece.
Thanks for this great analysis of this five star movie.
Great review, I learned a lot.
I'm sure you were forced to remove the dialogue but if you could put subtitles in it would prevent this issue ruining the context.

Joe Howgego ?
this is a great analysis of the movie
Tutti whacks Tommy.
Yeah whatever. Gotti was dealing drugs. That's why he killed Paul Castellano. He realized that Paul was going to find out what he was doing, so he figured he would kill him first before Paul had him killed.
Consider casino, I’m telling you, I thought goodfellas was all that until rewatching Casino after years. It’s almost like you’re watching something you aren’t supposed to see
No more shines, Phil Leotardo.
