The JJC lens cap to me is a must have, if you have the camera in your pocket or in a bag you can just grab it with no fear of damaging the leaves on the lens.
I had the cap but lost it. I think that actually the JJC UV filter is a better option for me, it keeps out dust as well as protecting the plastic shutter doors you mention. While we're at it I would also recommend a screen protector for the LCD back screen. This gives me more confidence day to day as the GRIII isn't perhaps quite as robust as you might expect in my opinion.
If you forget to take of the lens cap either the camera lens will push the lens cap off or detect that it can't open and retract again. So no worries it won't damage yur camera if you forget 👌
I've given up worrying too much about forgetting to take off that cap before turning on the camera: it is easily pushed off by the lens as it extracts from the body. The only punishment is the clinking sound of the cap falling on the cobblestones. In return you gain additional street cred after a few such occurrences by being able to show off your "distressed" lens cap. Leica brassing for the cheap! Keep it clean on the back side though, you do not want that urban grime rubbing into your lens.😊

It’s in my jeans pocket every day and use it a lot, the cap is perfect/a must for doing that. I’ve had no issues with dust or anything

the is an earlier thinner version of it.. they replaced it with a thicker version due to concerns but I guess it's good enough for gr3..
