How can a masterpiece like this one be so unknown? I've just added this symphony to my list of favourites.

Thank you for posting another symphonic gem. I only wish folks would stop comparing Wilms, Fodor, Weyse, Fesca, Pleyel, etc. to Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven. Each composer has their own unique voice and should be judged on their own merits.

People do it with contemporary composers too--"Oh that sounds like a mix of Elgar, Tchaikovsky, and Sibelius!"

Since we're comparing, I wouldn't mention Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven. Not even close actually. I'm thinking somewhere between Mendelssohn and Schumann, and probably closer to Mendelssohn. And that's just on the basis of this one piece. It'll take me a while to decide just how much I like it, since I know Mendelssohn's and Schumann's symphonies approximately 50-100x better. And I happen to think Schumann's four symphonies are among the greatest ever written.

@@clavichord That is because the academia have gone down the shitter. A while ago I was sent the graduation thesis of some master student at the Brussels conservatoire and it was titled something like 'why Western music theory promotes white supremacy'. If you pursue a degree in music composition and especially musicology, cultural criticism + self-loathing + postmodernist bullshit ideas are what is expected of you.
There are still great composers out there but they're utterly neglected by the academia-bound music press and the composers they promote are utter shite. Karlheinz Stockhausen for example. Who in his right mind listens to that crap?

There's a little more pixie dust in Mendelssohn, less heavy footed-ness, and a little more lively dancing energy, nevertheless quite close .....

Mendelssohn might have been a somewhat conservative composer in comparison to some of his contemporaries but not this conservative. This symphony isn't even a proper Romantic style work, not because Wilms wasn't a gifted composer but because Dutch classical music culture lagged decades behind that of the German speaking areas of Europe until much later. We were a nation of alcoholic peasants and sailors and even the nobility here were Philistines.
