My son, who is almost transparent, is going to Miami for 3 wks. I've been trying out sunscreens on my face for him. If I can tolerate it, he can. I'm sending a tote bag's worth of sunscreen with him.
I like copper tone pure and simple spf 50 or higher. I use the body and face one. I’m extremely pale with sensitive skin that reacts to sun exposure and it doesn’t give me any issues. It does have a white cast for a little bit but that goes away as you rub it in and it dries. I layer it on super thick too and it goes away on me, granted I’m pale so it might not to the same on someone with a darker complexion. I also like that once it absorbs and dries it doesn’t leave a greasy residue.
Me and my friend Erica severely got sunburned on our scalps several years ago in Lake Havasu and we literally thinned in that area and lost a lot of hair. The scratch was unbearable. It also widened my hair part.
I'm a person of color and I've never had a sunburn on my skin in my life (even before I wore sunscreen; I tan rather than burn). But once in Florida I did get a sunburn on my scalp. I was in a convertible for several hours and I lent my hat to my friend--big mistake! The part in my hair was really red and sore. So, just in case you thought you can't get sunburned on your scalp because you have a deeper skin tone--learn from my mistake and don't let anyone borrow your hat!
I didn’t know these products exist! I’m allergic to aloe Vera so getting sunburn is a no no for me. I lather every part of my body with sunscreen. I’m definitely going to be buying sunscreen for my scalp now.
For the record, any nice thick moisturizer is a life saver for a sunburn! It doesnt have the same cooling effect as aloe but I find it shortens the life span of a sunburn SIGNIFICANTLY.
@@hippopajamas trust me when I say there’s NO cooling effect when aloe touches my skin 😂 but the last time I got a sunburn (6yrs ago) I used apple cider vinegar and it helped to a certain extent

My mother was the same way. Ate nothing but pastries, drank nothing but coffee, and stayed thin as a rail. Had a year-round tan, even though she was a red head and never got skin cancer. Smoked a pack of cigarettes a day and never got lung cancer. Lived to be 87!
I've burned the part in the hair a couple times and it always freaks me out because my grandfather had melanoma on the top of his head. I remember just how much they had to take from his scalp to treat it.

I also have the Coola hair and scalp spray, my daughter says it smells strong. She is only a child :) I hope it works after a day at the beach or the pool. I just moved from the NJ to CA & I am in the pool and sun a lot more here. I have a history of melanoma in my family, so I am trying to be very faithful with sun protection! I just put two tablespoons of my regular sunscreen in a spray bottle with about a cup of water. Works fine (doesn’t make my hair greasy) and is FAR more cost effective. I put it all over my hair though ...gotta protect my locks as well!
ulta has a new powder for hair & scalp, it's spf 45, and is mineral. i would love to know your thoughts on it! 🥰 i know powders aren't ideal coverage, but i have very thick & coarse hair, with an oily scalp, would this suffice?
I am very intrigued by powders too. I’d also like to know if I could use a face powder with spf on my scalp. I have the Bare Minerals one and HATE how it wears on the skin but am hoping to repurpose it on my oily scalp.
Hm, that seems a tad iffy to me because the spf powder might mix with scalp oils and cake onto the scalp. Aren’t our scalps more oily than the skin on our face? I thought that’s why dr dray discourages dry shampoo.
So true. My husband got skin cancer on his scalp and had to have surgery at the derm office. Not fun. Trying to get him to wear sunscreen on his scalp now.
I’ve used the Banana Boat scalp spray at the beach already and it worked great! It didn’t leave my scalp or any part of my hair greasy and didn’t wake up to a red scalp! Highly recommend if you don’t like wearing hats like me to the pool or beach.

I was just having a discution with my best friend. She stopped using any kind of cleanser, moisturiser and spf for 2 weeks now. Her skin feels better than ever. No more acne, no more redness and spots. (She only uses water to cleanse.) Interesting :)
@@user-pw8xf5qi2z sure, same as me basically. Bioderma atoderm moisturiser, 0.05%Tretinoin gel once or twice a week, some vegan natural soap- i use Laroche posay cleanser (the only difference I think) and laroche posay spf 50 fluid.
This is why they say skincare is very personal, I used to do the bare minimum also and I have basic lack luster skin but when I started a good skincare routine my skinnis amazing, people assume I must get a facial every week but it's just my routine but I have friend who have even better skin than mine and all they use Is dove soap bar and e45 or vaseline, I could never because I need more oomph in my routine. So it's always good to try things out and if it's not working then go back to basics. But do what's best for you.
I'm sensitive to fragrance and finding anything to protect the scalp is impossible. Having extremely sensitive skin is such a struggle with literally all products even products without fragrance can be hit or miss. I really hope companies start realizing that we are sick of fragrance being in every cosmetic product!! It's so aggravating. Putting anything oil based on my scalp will result in contact dermatitis or flare up my seborrheic dermatitis. And I can't wear hats to work so I'm just out of luck I guess since I can't put sunscreen lotion on my hair without looking like a grease mop all day and spraying fragrance on my hair after doing so much work to get rid of all fragrances in my shampoo conditioner and leave in spray and skin care in the last year I'm obviously not trying to just spray fragrance in my hair knowing it'll hurt my skin. :(

I will be going on a cruise in January. Struggling on what sunscreens to take, how much too take and what other sun related items to take. At home I remember to reapply but it is hard when I am out of my everyday routine. The Sun Bum products, I will definitely look into.

At the International Swim Center in Santa Clara, CA, they no longer use chlorine in their pools. All of them are now salt water pools. The down side of this is that they no longer allow swimmers to wear sunscreen!
Husband looooves SunBum anything. (Same but he’s hooked!) What about their scalp sunscreen spray? He loves it but I didn’t hear/see you mention that. I’m definitely checking out the shampoo and conditioner, leave in and detangler. Especially since live in Florida. Thanks!
Even before I was sunscreen-savvy and diligent about use, I've always worn a hat and big sunglasses year-round. Now that I'm on the cusp of 50, I am sooo glad I did. Loving the Sun Bum detangler/UV protectant since Dr. Dray talked about it a couple months ago.
I have a mohawk and hate putting regular sunscreen on my buzzed sides. This is amazing! Scalp sunburns are no joke, people! I have gotten many a burn on my hairline and OOF.

Living in Arizona is challenging with the sun. Last year I spent more time in the pool and my blonde/graying older hair got pretty damaged. I've started this year with more cocoa butter on my ends to help protect it. I think I'll snag up some of these suggestions as far as a leave in product goes.
Try a shampoo and conditioner for swimmers. I like to take the conditioner and use it to pull my hair back (it's long) before going into the pool. Especially when it was bleached. Amazon has many brands and Sally beauty stores have their own brand that works well too.
I’m a sunscreen slatherer 😄 and I use mineral sunscreen since I’m extremely sensitive to the chemical filters out there. My problem is that I always get stains from the sunscreen (both tinted and untinted) along the neck of my clothes. I try to wait as long as possible before I put them on but it doesn’t help much. Do you have any good tips on how to avoid this, or how to remove the stains?
I can confirm that hairstyles with a parting can lead to burns. One summer when I wasn't wearing hats, I just kept moving my parting to a new place so I imagined that if I hypothetically had shaved my hair off my head, I would have had stripes - red sunburn lines from where the partings had been. Funny thought. Unless I get melanoma...
I started using Sun Bum over a year ago. I really like it, I go back and forth between the one for curls and the blonde for my high lights. It's way better than the other purple shampoos out there. I use the sprays on me and the kiddo

Idk if it’s still relavent to you, but a sunscreen like supergoop invisible, or the Kroger or Trader Joe’s copycats of it might work well, it has a matte sort of smooth finish compared to most other sunscreens.
I got a horrible blistering sunburn on my scalp as a kid when I went swimming. I have oily skin so I tend to prefer the powder sunscreens for my scalp. Most recently I have been using poof by supergoop. It works great for my blonde hair, but would leave a white cast on dark hair.

My family went to Orlando the past week and though we lathered up on sunscreen, we still got super tanned. After this trip, I decided to purchase the long sleeve rash guard as I can't afford more sun damage to my skin but still want to spend time at the pool. Such a dilemma LOL
Rash guards are designed for surfing so you can definitely still wear it to the pool. I have a friend who only swims with a long sleeve rash guard and inspired me to do the same.
Hair only offers an SPF factor of 6. I removed several cancers over 2-3 year period using bloodroot salve. Several more from neck to feet. Too much time outside as a kid and as young adult without protection

I purchased the Bumble to Bumble 2 oz. A little goes on a long way. I use it on dry/wet hair. I have thin, wavy hair 2B-3A. It is suitable for taming flyaways, and the scent reminds me of summer. It was nice to try a sample before committing to a large bottle and in the in the Midwest summer is only 3 months.

Hi Dr. Dray. This is not a sunscreen comment but I hope you can answer my question. I recently ordered Vitamin C serum from "EVA". When I received it I noticed it contains 20% C, 2% retinol, 10% MSN 5% hyaluronic acid, 3.5% niacinamide. I've never heard of combining C and Retinol in the same serum. Dr Alexis Stephens has a video, how to use vitamin a and vitamin c together. Some of the products she mentions are combo vit a/vit c products. MSN is Methylsulfonylmethane which is a solvent, viscosity controller.

The coola doesnt have chemical frangrance if im right ( only flavor)
Ultrasun make a uv scalp spray which I seem to remember is not fragranced. I've used it. Not oily, and you can't see it. All round Great.
Do you mind sharing what fragrance free shampoo and conditioner you use? Would you be able to wear a headscarf at work to protect your scalp and hair?

At the International Swim Center in Santa Clara, CA, they no longer use chlorine in their pools. All of them are now salt water pools. The down side of this is that they no longer allow swimmers to wear sunscreen!

Even before I was sunscreen-savvy and diligent about use, I've always worn a hat and big sunglasses year-round. Now that I'm on the cusp of 50, I am sooo glad I did. Loving the Sun Bum detangler/UV protectant since Dr. Dray talked about it a couple months ago.

I have a mohawk and hate putting regular sunscreen on my buzzed sides. This is amazing! Scalp sunburns are no joke, people! I have gotten many a burn on my hairline and OOF.
A faithful sunscreen wearer since age 15 years old & I am just learning now that hair sunscreen is a thing. I have same hair style as you, Dr Dray!

I would love to know more about how to protect myself from mosquitos, they really love me 😖 Also, is there any science behind those electric zappers for the bites, or is it just another marketing gizmo?
Go to Lake Havasu in the summer and see what scalp and lip sunburn is. It’s bad!

Living in Arizona is challenging with the sun. Last year I spent more time in the pool and my blonde/graying older hair got pretty damaged. I've started this year with more cocoa butter on my ends to help protect it. I think I'll snag up some of these suggestions as far as a leave in product goes.
Try a shampoo and conditioner for swimmers. I like to take the conditioner and use it to pull my hair back (it's long) before going into the pool. Especially when it was bleached. Amazon has many brands and Sally beauty stores have their own brand that works well too.

I’m a sunscreen slatherer 😄 and I use mineral sunscreen since I’m extremely sensitive to the chemical filters out there. My problem is that I always get stains from the sunscreen (both tinted and untinted) along the neck of my clothes. I try to wait as long as possible before I put them on but it doesn’t help much. Do you have any good tips on how to avoid this, or how to remove the stains?

I can confirm that hairstyles with a parting can lead to burns. One summer when I wasn't wearing hats, I just kept moving my parting to a new place so I imagined that if I hypothetically had shaved my hair off my head, I would have had stripes - red sunburn lines from where the partings had been. Funny thought. Unless I get melanoma...
I did the same thing!! It kept lines of mild burns instead of one really bad burn in one part.

I started using Sun Bum over a year ago. I really like it, I go back and forth between the one for curls and the blonde for my high lights. It's way better than the other purple shampoos out there. I use the sprays on me and the kiddo

I would LOVE to get your thoughts on best sunscreens for the few of us that are bald or have shaved heads. Normal sunscreen tends to make my scalp shinier than I like. Thank you as always!
Idk if it’s still relavent to you, but a sunscreen like supergoop invisible, or the Kroger or Trader Joe’s copycats of it might work well, it has a matte sort of smooth finish compared to most other sunscreens.
I got a horrible blistering sunburn on my scalp as a kid when I went swimming. I have oily skin so I tend to prefer the powder sunscreens for my scalp.
Most recently I have been using poof by supergoop. It works great for my blonde hair, but would leave a white cast on dark hair.

My family went to Orlando the past week and though we lathered up on sunscreen, we still got super tanned. After this trip, I decided to purchase the long sleeve rash guard as I can't afford more sun damage to my skin but still want to spend time at the pool. Such a dilemma LOL
Rash guards are designed for surfing so you can definitely still wear it to the pool. I have a friend who only swims with a long sleeve rash guard and inspired me to do the same.
Hair only offers an SPF factor of 6. I removed several cancers over 2-3 year period using bloodroot salve. Several more from neck to feet. Too much time outside as a kid and as young adult without protection
People with textured hair can use raspberry oil in their hair. It has natural spf

I purchased the Bumble to Bumble 2 oz. A little goes on a long way.
I use it on dry/wet hair. I have thin, wavy hair 2B-3A. It is suitable for taming flyaways, and the scent reminds me of summer.
It was nice to try a sample before committing to a large bottle and in the in the Midwest summer is only 3 months.

Got the sun bum sea spray with UV...it dies not make my VERY COARSE Silver hair crunchy...on sale at CVS this week.It actually defrizzes, but I don't see a UVA screen Only the Cinnamidopropyltrimonium chloride?

Hi Dr. Dray. This is not a sunscreen comment but I hope you can answer my question. I recently ordered Vitamin C serum from "EVA". When I received it I noticed it contains 20% C, 2% retinol, 10% MSN 5% hyaluronic acid, 3.5% niacinamide. I've never heard of combining C and Retinol in the same serum. Is this good, bad, or indifferent? I don't know what MSN is. Hope you're having a great Thursday! Thanks!
Dr Alexis Stephens has a video, how to use vitamin a and vitamin c together. Some of the products she mentions are combo vit a/vit c products. MSN is Methylsulfonylmethane which is a solvent, viscosity controller.

I've had my part burn a few times and it's the worst thing... I was actually looking for a scalp spf for an upcoming vacation! I'm going to go for the Banana Boat one - the Walgreens isn't on their website for some reason.
