    One tip I’ve heard is if your using a removal company don’t write the contents of a box on it. Write a number an the box and then write a list with each number and what’s in that box somewhere else. This minimises the risk of someone stealing a box if they think it contains something valuable. Of course most employees will be very trust worthy but you can never be too careful

      It’s a good idea to keep an inventory! So you can see when box 5 has gone missing quickly!

    • @thatduded3587
      @thatduded3587 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I think just in general this is a good tip. Why let someone (who has intention of stealing) know what’s in the box.

      @rickyking1741 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      We use duct tape strips on the boxes. One color for each room. When you get to the new house put a strip on the coriespondin room door so all can help unload and use tape strips to put in those rooms.

      Yes that happened when my mum moved. She wrote soccer ball on the box. Box disappeared.

    A moving tip: Put a set of bedding for each bed together & set up the beds first when you arrive at the new house. That night when you are too exhausted you can fall straight into bed as they were the first thing set up.

      I have a futon I just lay on the floor, super portable, but will definitely remember this for my dad's bed. We have a cot for emergencies, but I'd rather not use it if we don't have to(he's getting older and it's hard on him to sleep on)

      I also recommend a 1st to Open kitchen box, which for us means tea kettle, French Press, coffee grinder, coffee beans, tea bags, cocoa packets, a small Tupperware of sugar, and dry creamer (just in case). And 4 cups/mugs. Because no one in our group wants to start the day without our own coffee, etc.

    My tip would be to film a tour of your old house with everything in its place before you start packing up. I did this before I moved out of my very first apartment and it’s so nice to look back on, to remind you of a home you loved 🙂❤️ good luck with the move Emily, sooo excited for you! X

      Yesss! That’s so crazy because I literally just did that today, and this is probably my 30+ move in my life but I’ve never done that before and always regretted. So for this live, it was the first thing on my list of things to do before anything else. Now that it’s done, I feel like I can really dive into the huge project of moving, while feeling a sense of freedom and completion because I‘ve captured and honored the place that I’m now leaving. It’s so funny you mentioned this and I came across it today!

    I used to have SO MANY books. And I moved 4 or 5 times with them. To prevent heavy book boxes, I packed a few books in almost every single box, with other things. So I never had a crazy heavy box of books. And we've done the color coding with tape. SUPER helpful.

      5:34 The box is flat and horizontal, the wrapped frames are actually shown as being placed vertically. Some padding in between frames, especially those that may jut out a bit, would help avoid breaking during any impact.

      yeah, making holes in moving boxes so the bugs and other critters can get in them while they are either in a garage or storage waiting to be shipped to their new home. LOL....DO NOT leave open holes in moving boxes. The entire point of taping up the box to start with. If you you need handles on a box, its too heavy or too bulky for you. Pack smarter, not harder.

    Hack 2: plastic grocery bags work super well to wrap breakable items. Even the plastic grocery bags you ripped open can be used to wrap breakable. It seems a little thin at first but you'll realize as you wrap items and place them in boxes together that the plastic wrapped around everything makes really thick protective puffy barriers that compliment each other and everything is padded and safe!

    I’m very sentimental and I have learned that the “everyday” things are what make up “the good ol’ days”. Each home I have lived in is a season of my life. While I do end up with many pictures within the home, one of the best things I’ve learned to do is take pictures of each room without anyone in it, same as if you’re taking a picture of a loved one. I wish I had always done this, it’s like a visual time capsule. Then you can start de cluttering and packing, etc. One day your children will be grown and moved out, and these pictures will make nice momentos.

We also passed on those boxes to other people who needed them for moving. Also make sure you know there will be an open Chinese or Indian take away nearby, so you can plan to not need to cook on moving day. You’ll need that at the end of moving 🤣

    For knives, insert them into cardboard for an easy non-slip sleeve! For books, I've found donated boxes from liquor stores to be the perfect size without them getting too heavy or cumbersome.

    I will say i didn't care for vacuum seeling. Everytime i pulled something out, i had to rewash it because it was SO wrinkled. I loved using the bags over the clothes, especially if you have people helping because your clothes just get thrown everywhere and at least in the bags they are protected

    The black bin bag one is fab! A,so like the sock /glasses idea. We have moved house 11 times in 14 hrs (ex mil) so have had some ok moves and not ok moves but we’re fortunate that they did the moving all for us - full pack /unpack. My top tip would be to buy some bottles of water, cans of coke etc and sandwiches/cakes for the removal team - keeps them sweet and they generally work so hard!
    Eager to see your new house videos! X

    My family's been moving around renting houses for years since I was born (I'm 22 now) because my mom likes to think of it as an adventure and being able to live in a new kind of surrounding. Some of these hacks I am familiar like using a bin bag which we've also been using for our clothes because we don't really have suitcases and I think it's clever to suck the air using a vacuum that can give us more space in our car that we usually use since we only rent trucks for our big furnitures like beds, sofa, and our dining table. I would definitely use these on our next move or maybe when I get to move abroad. Thank you.

      Naomi Scott I was a bit confused as well 😁 I asked myself “does she show us the wrong way first and afterwards the right way? Or is she just confusing vertically and horizontally?”
      Nonetheless, it is a great hack 👌🏻

    Some good tips, others not so much. Sharp pointed knives in oven mitt? They will poke through easily. Cut for box handles? That really depends on how heavy they are, may tear the whole box. Probably more. I liked the socks in glasses one.

    It’s worth asking your removal company whether they expect you to empty drawers (especially clothes). We were amazed that our removal company literally picked up and moved our chest of drawer/wardrobe which meant we didn’t have to pack our clothes. Worth asking :) all the best for the move. I love your videos xx

      I just did the same thing and they said yes. Mine is a local move but nonetheless a tough one as I'm 60, not in great health and live alone. I already did the black bags on hanging clothes, BUT (dummy me) did them upside down! I still have some clothes on hangers that I want to have when I 1st get there. I'll but the bags on right side up now. PS Wonderful video!!

    • @randy6616
      @randy6616 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@SissyD61, if you haven't changed out the bags already, just take another bag and tie it onto the bottom of the bag making a completely enclosed garment bag out of the two tied together. I feel your pain and then some. I'm 60 and in a wheelchair, so can't really do much but "directing". I know I'll be loved the day of the move. (Sarcasm inserted)

      That's so wonderful, and such a blessing!😊.. When I move; I now just take out the drawers and move the empty dresser, then replace the drawers once on the moving space.. Then do the opposite to remove from moving space (truck/van/trailer) into new area.. If I don't have time to pre-organize the drawers I just cover the top space with, (towel/t-shirt/sheet/throw blanket).. It just helps with appearance and my stress! Lol..

    Emily, couple of tips for you; 1) when marking boxes, don’t just write or mark the top, do the sides too otherwise when the boxes are stacked, you won’t know what’s what, 2) if you are using a removal firm & they’re supplying boxes, try to only use theirs as they have a system for stacking in the lorries and random size boxes can make that harder and everything less stable, 3) when packing your plates, also stack vertically. If you are using a removal firm, they should really show you how to pack and supply paper, corrugated card, bubble wrap, tape etc so might be worth checking as although it might cost a bit more, there’s nothing worse than opening a box to find things broken. My Mum is the Queen of moving and virtually an expert at packing up a house, she’s done it so many times and even the removal firm our family use, know she knows what she’s doing and doesn’t need the “talk”. Good luck when it does finally happen. I’m hoping to be doing the whole thing again next year🤞, so empathise. Also you might want to check with your skip firm about the lawnmower, as usually electrical items can’t go in skips unless you’ve made special arrangements. Otherwise you could be charged extra as they need special WEEE processing. 🤷‍♀️ x
