27:00 that blind jump is the reason why i was never able to beat the arcade version. and there is no way to warp past world 6 unlike in the nes version.
Hey John! 1080p60 is the way to go. For the content you provide, it only makes the quality that much more enjoyable. The scan lines of the CRTs in the cabinets is no longer visible and your arcade really shines that much more on video. (Anyone reading with an AMD Radeon HD5xxx or 6xxx series, you're out of luck on 1080p60. The current implementation of the renderer used in Chrome just can't decode fast enough for these processors to handle. 720p60 works fine though. They've since rewritten the renderer and one of the future version of Chrome should fix this. For now, just set to 720p60.)
I was watching on firefox browser then switched to chrome to and you can definitely tell the difference from the normal 1080P vs the 60fps 1080P. Game play looks amazing. The details are very sharp and the colors are crisp and clean. You should do all your game play vids like this.
John, born in 1970, I have a warm and fuzzy feeling about space invaders too, but you hit the nail on the head about it not aging well. I also played it to death on the 2600. When Pac Man came along, it took over, and then soon after (at least the arcades I went to) Donkey Kong ruled, and DK has aged well, still a great game. I wouldn't get space invaders if I were you, its just not that fun any more, but when it came out, it was truly revolutionary, but now its just a decoration that would take up valuable space.
HowAbout NoSon DK is way way better than SI. There are a lot more things to do in DK and a lot more ways to die. Plus there are four different screens with different challenges. You can really play DK for a long time before you start to learn everything. Even then there are lots of ways that the experts can squeeze out more points that beginners could never do. It's surprisingly deep for being practically the first platformer ever. Of course it is much harder than it seems at first - that's key.
I like the 1080p 60 fps quality! You need to do a year end tour of the arcade in this format. A close look at each game with a mini backstory would be great!
World 8 is almost identical between the NES and Vs. versions. For the rest of the game, whereas the NES version repeats layouts for some levels, the Vs. version omits the repeat layouts and uses, instead, layouts from Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan) ("The Lost Levels"). I've always preferred the Vs. version because of this increased variety and challenge.
John, I myself also wondered how much money you pumped into your arcade. It's only natural. You seem to have invested a lot of time and energy educating yourself on how to restore these games. Guys like me are envious because we don't have the skills or the opportunity to have what you have. Watching your videos has motivated me to get into collecting when I move home from Korea to Canada. All I have to do now is break this news to the wife.................let the games begin.Rock on John!
I am experimenting with your 1080p60 and it's an amazing picture. A little sluggish but the quality of your videos have jumped by leaps and bounds over the past couple of years. Cheers!
Hey, John. Great video! I didn't know there was a battery slot on the Vs. board. Now I'll have to check whether mine has any batteries in it. By the way, the key to the 6-3 "leap of faith" is to carefully walk back and forth on the right edge of the platform until the red Koopa Paratroopa scrolls into view. Then go almost all the way to the left of the platform and wait for the Koopa to reach its lowest point and begin to ascend. As soon as it starts moving upward, run across the platform, jump off the right edge of the platform and hold the button in. You should bounce on the Koopa and get across.
Wow some cool presents from Chuckie Egg there. I have the Ministry of Sound 80s album and it is pretty good, the Carry on Camping film however maybe some what of an acquired taste ;)
Best viewer mail section to date! I'm sure you get those questions a lot, but it comes with the territory of making such great videos dude. I already knew you shared a passion for the same stuff I do, but it was nice of you to take the time to personalize yourself within the context of the hobby you love. I'm an avid subscriber and I hope our paths cross one day. I'm a pilot so getting out to BOS is no problem. I'm also a retried rock lead guitar player stuck in the 80's. Cue John's goofy chuckle. ;). BTW thanks for the Tito's plug....its me and my wife's fav vodka now and she used to hate vodka. :)
I love the new 60fps videos! Great video, John! How much do you know about the basics of arcade hardware? I'd love to see a video where you go over the most basic and integral parts of hardware in arcade games. I'd like to understand more about electronics, and I'm sure you'd make learning about it fun! :-)
John love this video of the Super Mario vs and to answer your question in world 1-2 yes you can go above the screen in the same place on the nes super mario bros that you can on Vs. S.M.B. . By love the crisp look for the video game of 60fps looks great. Have a Happy New Year looking forward to your year end video on sunday. Love your graphic design work for your youtube channel really sick
Merry Xmas john,i wish you the Best always. The new format is great, although i have to say, that the quality was very good "before" as well :) Love your vids, they keep me good company whenever i watch em,
Hey John! Love the video and it looks just fine playing on a roku. Vs super mario was actually its own game similar to the second quest in the first game where the enemies were changed into more difficult versions. Smb2 in Japan was a different game and its difficulty is legendary. Conflicting stories actually have them keeping the game from the US as to not alienate younger less skillful players.
SMB 2 (Japanese version), AKA: The Lost Levels, is a completely different game than Vs. SMB. Vs. SMB is a little harder than regular NES SMB and has some minor changes, while SMB 2 is WAY harder, and has completely different level designs the whole way through, as well as different graphics for the ground (rocky pattern instead of a brick pattern).
Didn't know you were a full time graphic designer... I use to be one as well, I graduated from Full Sail in Orlando, then worked for the DoD on Macdill AFB/ Centcom, then went back to FS for my bachelors and then worked at a web design company before trying project management at another design company and doing what I do now... Anyway, I knew you did GD but not full time... So, cheers!
Merry Christmas man another great video. Please watch the Carry On DVD it's well funny. Also wait till you put batteries in that calculator. The numbers really pop, something like the vectors on a Tempest cab. Take it easy B
Lol at "bookkeeping fucktions." I used to have my birthdays at Putt-Putt mini-golf every year but since it's in March usually most of the time was spent in the arcade. One year they had Vs. Super Mario and my brother and I played it a few times. The thing I remembered most was that the coin counter had three digits for no apparent reason; I learned a lot later that apparently the arcade operator could set the coins needed for an extra life up to 250 if they wanted. You get the fireworks at the end of a level by having the timer end in 1, 3, or 6 when you hit the flag. The infinite lives trick was on 3-2, not 4-2, but they prevented that from being doable in the Vs. version by replacing the turtle with a goomba there. As for what I got for Christmas this year... Tales of Xillia 2 and Tales of Destiny Chronicles for PS3. Yeah, I'm a sucker for Japanese-style RPGs. :) Anyway, liked the vid, looks great, looking forward to your other videos this week.
Cool quotes from this video that can be misinterpreted... "I love this joystick" "I want a mushroom" "I'm sure I did all of that" "honestly I'm just so disgusted by the topic I didn't want even to think about it"...lol
Mario and Luigi weren't originally in Super Mario Bros. The original protagonist was a small square that was a placeholder. Eventually, Nintendo decided to use Mario and Luigi after seeing how popular Mario Bros. was in the arcades and on the Famicom in Japan.
This is on my wantlist for longtime and i tried this beauty last night in a barcade and its was amazing! This is possible to put NES ROM on this as Playchoice-10 with a kit?
John when you figure out the contrast brightness issues of the 720, can you pleeeease provide a hint to the Funspot people, they've been having the same problem with the APB (Atari) game
Yeah, the NES has a lateral elevator at the one part... Have you ever beat SMB naturally with no warps on NES? I tried a while back but die in Lev 8 dungeon maze... I just never completed it as a kid... Have you beat Castlevania ever? Did that a couple summers ago... I felt like I conquered the world... Then I tried playing through it again, and it's near impossible the 2nd play through... I can't even imagine the third... I couldn't get to Medusa the 2nd time... Insane
I think SNES/MegaDrive (Genesis) 16 bit stuff has really aged well because that's how the developers wanted the games to look like; it's the peak of how a 2D game can look. Most of the early 3D games wanted to be photo realistic but obviously the hardware couldn't do it so they don't look so good now; even if they were cutting edge at the time. Personally I don't think the NES has held up too well but who cares its still fun.
Hey john It's funny seeing All that stuff over there when it was over here lol Glad you liked it mate. The super Mario marque is original it came out of electrocoin which was the biggest supplier in the UK Hope I can come over soon and you can give me a tour of your basement and maybe funspot Hopefully next year 😎👍 I am working on it Happy new year buddy
SMB2J: The Lost Levels is a whole 'nother beast entirely! it's no wonder it was never released in the US up until Super Mario All-Stars on SNES... Nintendo must've figured that the original 2J was way too hard, so we got the conversion of that other easier Japanese game instead. (A port of VS. SMB wouldn'tve been as bad, but since it was so similar to SMB on NES... it's just as well they skipped on an official port.) There does seem to be quite a few noticeable differences between the VS. System version and the NES version, like more 'gaps' on some of the later staircases that weren't there on the NES one. Also that WAS the right warp in 4-2, it just doesn't give you world 7 or 8 in the arcade :( It is a fun one to play in the arcades though, last I was at the Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas (December 2012) they had a dedicab version of it and I got to try it, it was actually a lot of fun! There's also a romhack for VS SMB that'll work on most nintendo emulators, and I believe it fixes that weird palette thing that usually occurs with some emulators. (the turtle thing was at the end of 3-1... I swear I could almost do that game blindfolded.... granted IF I got the extra lives there but yeah heh) Lastly it was Tetris & Dr. Mario on SNES! even had the interesting vs. mode where one could be playing tetris and the other dr. mario and vice versa!
It's like this. First there was SMB on the Famicom. SMB on NES is basically identical. Then there was Vs. SMB which has some of the levels changed. Then SMB2 came out on disk. SMB2 has all the new levels introduced in Vs., and the rest of the levels were also replaced with new levels. SMB2 also has new things like poison mushrooms, wind, Luigi jumping higher, and some different graphics.
Another awesome video,,,looks great!! I loved the Super Mario vs. play video. The red tent has always intrigued me. Almost bought one last year at Midwest Gaming Classic, in Milwaukee. Is 500.00 bucks a good price on a working ,, decent cond. one of these??? I think there was several there last year for sale. I heard the monitors are hard to find. and or fix.... Anyway I think thats what makes your channel so great is that your willing to try different things. Viewer mail for example.... Rock -on, JON
Love the video, as I do them all! I'm noticing though that several comments have mentioned their quality isn't as good as usual. I had the same issue, even though I am running Chrome as my browser. It wouldn't go above 360 resolution. It may be that it hadn't completely rendered, as I was only the 40th view. Is that even possible, I don't know. Be that as it may, regardless of the video quality, always excited to see a new John's Arcade video in my inbox! I'm glad you took a few days to decompress with the family. That's important. At the end of the day, it's all about family. Thank you for all of the great videos, and I want to wish you a wonderful and exciting 2015! Happy New Year my friend!!
If the video is not done processing it only makes the low resolutions available. So... if that happens, check back in a few until 1080p is done rendering.
Pinballz is awesome! I took my boys there last year on our way down to Schlitterbahn water park (best water park in the world, btw). Also check out Arcade UFO on the campus of Texas University. They mainly have Japanese fighting games. It's tiny, but worth checking out. If you can burn a morning waiting in line, check out Franklin's BBQ. Austin is a must do trip.
john i no bullshit had a dream about the sherif arcade last night and i dreamt i was moving it around this guys room and the paint was falling out.. like i fucked it up. lol i was trip pin out.. hella crazy.. i want one! hahaha
john got me a wii u basic with smash bros, super mario wii u and nintendo land far cry 4 ps4 (still unopen waiting for the hack to get fixed) and some comics i have a question john do you use the tv or the gamepad more to play wii u games i use the gamepad more saves me putting on the tv
John, I started to watch your video, but did not read the full title. After a few seconds i asked my wife if she mess around with our internet service because the quality of the video was bad ass ;-) until you explained how you recorded it. anyway, great video of the vs super Mario, such a great game. are you a fan of the Goonies? If you are (like i am) in june of 2015 they will have the 3oth years anniversary in Astoria Oregon (where the movie was made) i went the the 25th anniversary few years ago and it was awesome I did not know you were a graphic designer...that explain all the cool stuff on your web site...
Does anyone know of a good arcade in tennessee or otherwise near Nashville? Just asking because I listened to the part about arcades in the south but only Austin was mentioned.
- I have a casio pt-80 which has the same demo song. The little beat you mentioned was used by Trio - Da Da Da th-cam.com/video/lNYcviXK4rg/w-d-xo.html back in the 80's - Sennheiser great products - Best of Depeche Mode is a great album.
Hey John (or anyone else), I can use your help. I recently bought a VS. Super Mario Bros cabinet from a friend. The tag on the back has- Model #- MGS-UP-US Serial#-37688PAK It's a stand-up cabinet, blue on outside, and Super mario bros graphics on the sides. Do the numbers match?? I plan on restoring it if they do! Thank you!
Actually John on 4-2 you did have the correct warp on the nes that warp is for 6 7 and 8 on the vs it's only world 6 that's one of the differences between the games
I actually played this before the home version man 6-3 is unforgiving on the arcade I actually beat it though farthest I ever got to was 7-1 which had a ridicules water stage. I remember playing the home console version of SMB1 afterwards ,and was like wow 6-3 totally way easier, and you got to warp to level 8 I was amazed lol.
Ugh! Dude the 60fps was the first thing I noticed within 3 seconds and it is nauseating... Please go back to 30! Your lovable constructive critic, Shane
PLEASE don't do this as standard! It only looks better in Chrome and all other browsers/systems get severely downgraded. I'm using Firefox in Linux and I can only see this video in 360p, for example, and it suuuuuucks... :( I got a harness and a leash for walking my cats.
60FPS doesn't quite work for me on any videos since it stutters a lot, it could be either because it isn't completely compatible with Firefox yet or my laptop's a piece of crap about this since it only has an integrated Intel GPU and 3 Gigs of ram.
I got an NES for xmas this year and it feels like im back in my childhood and it rocks!!!!
Wow, i'm kind of blown away! Thats the first time I watched a 60 FPS video and it looks awsome. Please do more of this stuff!
Will do! Thanks. :)
John, The clarity of the 1080p60 is unbelievable. You've set the bar, now you've got to keep it up.
1080p 60fps is beautiful and perfect for these kinds of videos!

HowAbout NoSon
DK is way way better than SI.
Awesome video - looking forward to seeing you with a ZX Spectrum, cheers for the mention.
love the 60fps it's like your in the same room man and the gameplay looks awesome keep it up.
@20:38 - Those bricks are needed for -1 World warp on NES. They were removed from VS. SMB.
I laughed out loud when Super Mario Bros.had that crazy turtle that you couldn't see until you died :-) Video looks great!!
1080p 60fps .. this needs to be the standard for all your future videos
looks great!
I am experimenting with your 1080p60 and it's an amazing picture. A little sluggish but the quality of your videos have jumped by leaps and bounds over the past couple of years. Cheers!
Great video John, love the viewer mail and the gifts!
Wow some cool presents from Chuckie Egg there. I have the Ministry of Sound 80s album and it is pretty good, the Carry on Camping film however maybe some what of an acquired taste ;)
A video every day for the next week?! Sign me up! New 60 fps is amazing! Very happy you are doing the effort!
are you going to do an end of year arcade tour again? i really enjoyed that video last year.
Cue John's goofy chuckle. ;). I love the new 60fps videos!

17:41 That racing sound in the background matched up with the startup of the Vs. Super Mario Bros. game.
hahahaha omg! yes!
Nice video Jon. I grew up on Nintendo Super Mario Brothers and still play it today. Mostly the arcade version too.
Everyone in Britain was brought up on the Carry On films, Sid James is a legend :)
Love the 60fps
John love this video of the Super Mario vs and to answer your question in world 1-2 yes you can go above the screen in the same place on the nes super mario bros that you can on Vs. S.M.B. . John I'd like to point out that vs. Super Mario Bros. Is a mash up that contains levels from both smb 1 and the lost levels
Great vid John- Depeche Mode #1
Lol at "bookkeeping fucktions."

Still waiting for the video when you take the popcorn machine off your table. You look so cramped sitting there!
Cool quotes from this video that can be misinterpreted... "I love this joystick" "I want a mushroom" "I'm sure I did all of that" "honestly I'm just so disgusted by the topic I didn't want even to think about it"...lol
OMG i had that keyboard that demo tune plays in my head every now and again!

Cool if you are coming to Denver the 1 up arcade bar is awesome.
Yes! If I come to Denver in January it's gonna be to the 1up. Stay tuned!
Amazing john!
You went to the correct warp pipe. The NES version has 3 pipes, the arcade only has 1 pipe.
This is also my first mario experience. I remember being on holidays in america playing this in an arcarde when it was new! :O
I think SNES/MegaDrive (Genesis) 16 bit stuff has really aged well because that's how the developers wanted the games to look like; it's the peak of how a 2D game can look. The monitors in the bg looks better at 60fps. But that your table is out of control. Still way too wobbly;D
60 fps is looking great. Go ahead and continue to make your videos in 60 fps. :D
***** I can't go back now! :)
I agree with the Xmas Nintendo comments, Bayonetta as well, and I still feel like I need to play some SMB3DW and NewSMBU before New Years...
Peace
Hey john
It's funny seeing All that stuff over there when it was over here lol
Glad you liked it mate.
The super Mario marque is original it came out of electrocoin which was the biggest supplier in the UK
Hope I can come over soon and you can give me a tour of your basement and maybe funspot
Hopefully next year 😎👍
I am working on it
Happy new year buddy
Wow! That marquee is ORIGINAL? SICK!! Thank you!
If you come to the USA you have to come to my house too!
Would you know the reason why arcade boards are so big compared to cartridges on the home consoles
SMB2J: The Lost Levels is a whole 'nother beast entirely! it's no wonder it was never released in the US up until Super Mario All-Stars on SNES... I have never played that system can you play against somebody sitting across from you?
Holy shit! 60 fps was amazing.
60FPS looks great., Stick with it if it's not too much of a hassle to edit.
love the 60 fps!
Hey I was wondering what is an average cost of a fairly common arcade machine
Happy holidays, also enjoying the mailbox gifts don't mind them.
Do u have a arcade machine of a game called Kiki kaikai.
????
Pinballz is awesome! I took my boys there last year on our way down to Schlitterbahn water park (best water park in the world, btw). Also check out Arcade UFO on the campus of Texas University. They mainly have Japanese fighting games. It's tiny, but worth checking out. If you can burn a morning waiting in line, check out Franklin's BBQ. Austin is a must do trip.
1:02 please note Nintendo vs super xevious PCB to work has put development premiere the new video is workable nice work remember
john i no bullshit had a dream about the sherif arcade last night and i dreamt i was moving it around this guys room and the paint was falling out.. like i fucked it up. lol i was trip pin out.. hella crazy.. i want one! hahaha
Are you going to try to do a video everyday John?
The enemy with the cloud is called a "Lakitu"

John,
I started to watch your video, but did not read the full title. After a few seconds i asked my wife if she mess around with our internet service because the quality of the video was bad ass ;-) until you explained how you recorded it.
anyway, great video of the vs super Mario, such a great game.
are you a fan of the Goonies?
If you are (like i am) in june of 2015 they will have the 3oth years anniversary in Astoria Oregon (where the movie was made)
i went the the 25th anniversary few years ago and it was awesome
I did not know you were a graphic designer...that explain all the cool stuff on your web site...
Is it true that the arcade version of super mario is different from the nintendo home console one
John... That song that used that beat on the keyboard was Trio - Da Da Da th-cam.com/video/nr86RCqYcao/w-d-xo.html
Hey john you should get the Tetris lamps for you arcade it's awesome
Does anyone know of a good arcade in tennessee or otherwise near Nashville? Just asking because I listened to the part about arcades in the south but only Austin was mentioned.
The 60 FPS is so much better!
- I have a casio pt-80 which has the same demo song. The little beat you mentioned
was used by Trio - Da Da Da th-cam.com/video/lNYcviXK4rg/w-d-xo.html back in the 80's
- Sennheiser great products
- Best of Depeche Mode is a great album.
Hey John (or anyone else), I can use your help.
I recently bought a VS. Super Mario Bros cabinet from a friend.
The tag on the back has-
Model #- MGS-UP-US
Serial#-37688PAK
It's a stand-up cabinet, blue on outside, and Super mario bros graphics on the sides. Do the numbers match?? I plan on restoring it if they do! Thank you!
The serial number is a bit scratched, some 6's might be 8's, and vice versa.
what if the 1st red shell is at the same height as the 2nd?
WooHoo comment. Merry Christmas John.
OMG! I had that exact Casio.
MOAR 60FPS!! :D
Actually John on 4-2 you did have the correct warp on the nes that warp is for 6 7 and 8 on the vs it's only world 6 that's one of the differences between the games
Oh, Anthony! I see. So, on the NES I could have warped to 8 on 4-2. That's right!
Yes sir that is correct
also the warp to 6 7 and 8 was at the end of the stage accessed in the same way as the warp in 1-2.
It's 3-1 for the infinite lives
Wow that's a giant cartridge !
LITTLE MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAC!
Norsk John? Minnes du er Norsk/Italiensk? Hei fra Norge :-)
Yes, I am Norwegian and Italian. :) A little german too. LOL. (I don't speak the language, I used google translate.)
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech
Well done! And thanks for the Podcasts.
Your lovable constructive critic,
Shane

Like the show. Love old arcade games.
forget it John 480 fine :)
John the 1080p 60 fps took a long time to load and got glitchy. 720p60 seems to be the best on my computer. Rock on John.
John you need a better setup lol
i love super mario bros on the nes
PLEASE don't do this as standard! It only looks better in Chrome and all other browsers/systems get severely downgraded. I'm using Firefox in Linux and I can only see this video in 360p, for example, and it suuuuuucks... :(
I got a harness and a leash for walking my cats.
It seems that it was just taking TH-cam time to process the video. Can now watch it at 1080p just fine.
60FPS doesn't quite work for me on any videos since it stutters a lot, it could be either because it isn't completely compatible with Firefox yet or my laptop's a piece of crap about this since it only has an integrated Intel GPU and 3 Gigs of ram.
TheDabeavis it's crap lol
