Wow - INCREDIBLE interview. I was blown away by the questions - BRILLIANT - and then the answers. I am so BLESSED to be Catholic - so blessed to be a child of God. So blessed in my life. The CONTENT of this interview is so RICH - that I need to listen to it a number of times to fully comprehend. Thank you Dynamic Catholic Team!!!

My own father has passed away since the previous comment...I miss Dad talks. Father Mike and Matthew Kelly are having a dialogue that allows us to get to know Father Mike the person. The Bible in a Year is that Dad conversation every morning. I see two sinks of dirty dishes in the morning and hear children who need to be fed. By the time Father Mike is done sharing, I have my mind filled with the Word of God, knowledge of history, and a perspective for the day. He has Dad jokes, makes up his own words and keeps the difficult simple. He has a heart that breaks for the lost and broken, but he isn't afraid to have the difficult conversation that a Dad would have with a child. A Dad tells you the hard truth in a straight and loving way.

I have "known" Matthew Kelly for years..and Father Mike for 322 days.. love you both. The world needs more "Christ inspired" people like these two, along with Dr Scott Hahn and Bishop Barron...all following in the footsteps of Bishop Fulton Sheen...the greatest. Thank you ✝️🙏💞🙂 ps..I just told my age..I watched him on a black and white tv as a child.

Matthew, you spoke of love in an earlier interview in a way I’ve never heard before. You said we should seek to ask God for the grace to find the person in the room who needs the most love and give it to them. More recently I read a quote from St Pope JP2 that said that when we pray the rosary we enter the psychology of love. Mind melting... Thank you for giving me a new charism to aim for. I’ll be keeping all of this in my mind and heart as I go through my days. God bless you, brother!

@@MatthewKellyAuthor First, that we all are flawed and that is ok. Second I am always amazed at the stories being told about when a person's eyes are open to God. Yhay pivotal time. I look back and dont know if I have had that. I did have a priest in our parish who by his faith dree me to church. Then he to took time off because he had questions and doubts. Thankfully he did return and has done great things in the diasease. And he has touched many lives. So, i guess i did have a light shine the way for me after all. It was great listening to this interview, because I follow you both. Thank you again.

      Best:
*Sometimes we treat strangers with more respect than family. YES! Treat family BETTER.
*He/ she is not going to change. You put up with their foibles better when u first met. Remember that.
*Take time to pray. Know yourself enough to KNOW what it takes, the time u need to get to that center where u finally focus on Jesus and talk with Him.
Need MORE: on child rearing. And include the special challenge of single parenting. It’s a huge disadvantage, more than society recognizes. The loss of the echo back of parental feedback is huge: “What did u just say to YOUR MOTHER?!!” “Your mom asked you to do -- so do that first and afterwards let’s go do --- for fun / [ get out of her hair]. I adopted my girls in their teens 13 and 15. I see now clearly the loss for them- needing a good male model, needing the support on discipline but also the cushion of someone else to go to for comfort.

When asking Fr Mike what young people need to hear I had a flash back: I had a teen pregnancy… We are lucky to be part of each other’s lives now so everything is ok. I was/am a dedicated church goer, belonged to 2 church choirs, started the Right to Life in our parish as a teen for goodness sake. Sex was never discussed at home nor in church, except in evil hushed tones. I think I might have been better off if the Church outwardly talked about sex as “ marital love”, as a gift the man AND woman give each other. Speak about how the Bible is an instruction manual for life and the cheat notes are the10 Commandments and how there are their outlines that help you there; it’s called The Catholic Catechism. Just an idea. (I know it was all my responsibility) I went to premarital counseling and don’t remember any of this. It was watered down talking about bills and family visits. I’d like some traditional teaching brought back to this but with a Fr. Mike type voice, firm and compassionate.

    Great questions, great answers.
And, because I kind of know the answers to few of your shared questions, I'm going to share what I do know because I think it might help with how you can approach some of these things.
    I'll keep it brief.
    1. On the subject of love and relationships (of all natures). The best approach is to establish problem solving skills (I have done a lot of social service work over the years and that's what taught me to come up with this).
So, to do this you have everyone learn the three subjects of respect:
    1. Respect yourself
    2. Respect other
    3. Respect your environment
If one has a complaint against another you have them identify the core problem. To do this you address the behavior that triggered the complaint. Each person must come up with one thing that was good (what benefit or outcome they felt they achieved) and one thing that was bad (what unexpected consequence was created) about the experience. Then they have to identify how each of those good/bad things violated/benefited the three types of respects listed. For the end, they have to establish a new method of interaction that they're willing to try out.
If it doesn't work and they encounter the same or a new problem we do the process again and establish a different new method of encountering one another.
It creates an atmosphere of respect pretty quickly, ppl can't stand having to go through all of that. So, as a secondary benefit, they think it through before doing things that violate themselves, others, and/or the environment we're in. As a tertiary benefit it teaches them empathy and consideration for one another.
    2. Walking and standard meditation. My MA thesis was on Mandalas (think Rose Windows and the Wheel of Fortune, both Catholic).
What I did at first when I was learning how to meditate was I would visualize Christ sitting in front of me. I would then pretend I could feel his energy all around me keeping me safe as I asked Him questions about life.
What happened by starting this way was God would bring me answers through the universe. Then as I continued to grow and develop more security and trust He started communicating with me on more and more levels.
Just start with the bunny slopes. Earlier today I prayed you'ld be able to hear him audibly.
    3. Back to 1 for a second, Power Dynamics. Power Dynamica are a huge thing when it comes to human love and relationships. Most times ppl get into relationships to fulfill deficits in particular area of their lives (Eric Erickson's Stage Theory is the best resource for understanding and identifying these deficits as far as I've encountered while in in-field practice (I'm not doing soc serv work currently). Once the deficits are filled they run out of reasons to be together, or they deplete the other's energy banks because they don't recognize the other person is a trigger and not a power bank, or they try to give what the other doesn't need or want, etc
Sorry, I forgot I said short and quick, smh.
    Great interview guys.

Affirming if you’re trying to live the Gospel. These guys are striving to be good men.
But relationship advice, misses the mark to persons married to abusive, lecherous spouses.... choosing to love can also mean, choosing to love ourselves the way God loves us. And that choosing to love means choosing to leave!

My takeaway was, priests are people like us. They have their own battles with sin and dealing with life’s challenges. They just have learned to surrender to God and have a relationship with him. We tend to keep the father at arms length instead of embracing him. You (Matthew) encourage us to embrace God and trust in him. Priests already do and it’s not always easy for them to do so either.

Aside from her church program, she and I are working through the Decision Point workbook. We meet in her backyard once a month and go through two sections. She is very articulate for her age, and we end up sharing our thoughts for an entire afternoon! I am finding myself renewed in my faith as I sponsor her.
