Some people may not remember this as it was a Gameboy Color Mario game, but it's been called on of the best portables of all time. But Nintendo seems to have locked away Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. The premise is a simple as most Mario games are. There's a castle to get into, but instead of a princess in there, its Wario. And Wario has taken over YOUR castle. So now Mario must travel through Mario Land and Mario Zone to get the 6 Golden Coins to unlock his dang house.

this is my FAVORITE gameboy game.. I have completed it 1000 times. So many memories in the back seat of the car on a vacation trip. love it

Holy shoot, this is probably the shortest Completionist episode we've gotten in years.
Shade2800 at 9+ minutes? Easily. Granted you could probably blow through this game in an hour. Still a freaking amazing game though.
9 minutes include the 1:30 minute long intro . . .
IT's a short game, that's the problem
I love it, it's nice having bite-sized Completionist. Not every vid has to take up 20 whole minutes of my day.
Super Mario Land 2 is a big part of my childhood alongside with Pokemon Yellow and Wario Land
I fucking LOVE Wario Land. I really hope he completes it one day.
When I think of hardest Mario 2d levels of all time, Warios castle is top 3 forsure!
There actully is a Game Boy color remaster, it’s a fan hack that fixes frame issues, changes a few power ups, and even adds Luigi who has better jumping abilities!
It was one of the first virtual console games I got on my 3DS and it's so charming!
Played the game the final level was a pain to beat.
Heck Yeah! This was my first Mario experience on the OG Gameboy!

So funny you mention a ride to grandmas as a kid cuz um here to get some nostalgia about the old days. My dad passed away and the music and gameplay remind me of old vacations drives playing in the car. Good times... Miss you pops.
This game is harsh, I got game over at Wario and I had to do all 6 boss fights again to get the golden coins back.
But it´s amazing game for the original Gameboy.
You gotta grind those lives before going after wario

Highlights of the game, IMO:
Space World's music and zero gravity mechanics
F*CKING RABBIT EAR POWER UPS
Actually, the music in general
Some of the most unique level design in the entire Mario series
Wario's video game debut, to my knowledge
Cons:
Although relatively easy, the difficulty somewhat spikes at Wario's Castle
Getting a game over means you essentially have to do a boss rush to get your golden coins back, as you lose them all when it happens
Oh no... Davis said the worst F word possible.
Never say Fan-art.
I don't want to see the fan art, but I want to see a video of Jirad looking at it all.

Man I remember this game like it was yesterday, the music man. THE MUSIC. So simple yet so groovy. I even remember that I didn't own this game, but instead got to play it thanks to a friend when our class had a sleepover in ... some place. Can't remember where tho. I got to play it and instantly fell in love with it, and I even remember how scared I was when I turned off his gameboy by accident, knowing he would be suuuuper pissed.
This is one of favorite games of all time and the first game I ever played. I'm so happy you did a video on it.

This has always been one of my favorite Gameboy games, and the Super Beard Bros. playthrough you did with Davis is still one of my all time favorite Let's Play Series, so it's no surprise that I absolutely loved today's episode of New Game Plus. Keep up the good work, Jirard.
i wish they kept thevisual differences for the Powerups in the later games, like they did with the suits in Metroid
I feel I should mention there's also a DX style romhack that adds color and Luigi.

Ah, this brings me back... 'twas my first Mario game. I'm not that much into 2D Mario games nowadays, but this really gives me a good blast of nostalgia.

This game needs a remake.
It would be beyond Gold.
December 2017. A fan made remaster called Super Mario Land 2 Deluxe was released. Adds GB colour palette, and an option to switch between Mario and Luigi.
But I can understand Jirad might not always address a fan game doing what Nintendo didn't do... like with AM2R (for a time) or the Castlevania 2 patch community.
I feel like you guys had /so/ much fun with this one, and it's delightful~

Also, speaking of Wario, has Jirard ever completed Wario Land (Super Mario Land 3)? If not, well... you know what to do. Call ProtonJon for advice, since he's had a fair amount of experience with that game.
Even tho I havent played this game in over 10 years I still remember every track in this game so clearly as if I played it yesterday.

this was the game I played on the playground as a little kid. 1st mario experience on gameboy. Having a gameboy made you quite a crowd attractor back in 1996!
My friend and I found this game in the middle of a field during summer camp years ago. No one claimed it so we got to keep it. It's still hanging out on my bookshelf today.

I remember playing this game on a yellow Game Boy while in hospital (had an accident that broke my left leg). It was a nice experience!

The umbrella monsters are called Karakara in game and are modelled after Kasa-obake or Karakasa, one of the more well known yokai or ghosts in Japanese folklore. They are usually depicted as umbrellas with one eye and one leg that they hop around on and are often considered to be regular umbrellas that aged to a point that they became spirits. Due to their well-known status, they often appear as enemies in games, such as in the Kirby games where they have been common miniboses, and elsewhere in Japanese media.
This was the first game I ever owned and played and I still love it very much to this day.

I've been trying to watch this video all day but for some strange reason every time I start watching it I suddenly feel the urge to go watch an entire Proton Jon stream instead.
I love the ending of this game with Wario giving you a thumbs-up and being all like "Hooray! You defeated me!"

God dammit, you are so right about Super Mario Land 2 never getting old. I've played through this game dozens of time because it never stopped being fun. The art direction is charming, the music is catchy, and the game play is nice and simple. A timeless classic in my book, and my favorite Game Boy game.

I finished part one not to long ago, and this is on my list to complete all Mario Games
While I like Bowser and Peach and the usual formula in most Super Mario games, the Super Mario Land games on the Game Boy are some of my favorites simply because they dare to be different. And they gave us characters such as Daisy and Wario.
Now if only they would bring back Tatanga...

For my sixth birthday I received a GameBoy Big Pack with Super Mario Land 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. These two games are still two of my favourite games

SML2 was one of my first Game Boy games and is still one of my favorites. Used to play it a lot when I was a kid.

The first time I played this game I thought "this is too easy" until I got to Wario's castle, I literally lost all my lives and every time you game over, you lose all the of the golden coins you have, having to fight the bosses again.
