"How long their run was" -- the band existed for a long time but their glory years were 1974-1983, when they had the "classic lineup" of Davies, Hodgson, Helliwell, Siebenberg, and Thompson. They put out 5 studio albums and one astounding live album in that period. Hodgson left the group in 1983 and it was never the same.
Rockin' the Klezmer! Breakfast in America was a massive record back when it was new. I was in eighth grade. I remember that we reacted to "The Logical Song" in our social studies class. Our teacher was cool. At any rate, one of the benefits of getting old is losing track of new artists and being completely unaware of the various covers they record for better or worse.
Supertramp is super high on my list! It's what some of us used to refer to as Art Rock. Wish they were still playing together! When I was in high School drama class I did a pantomime of the song Lover Boy as a brand new senior at a new school. I was crazy nervous pulling a girl from class to be on stage with me, but I got an A and some new friends! ✌️❤️🤟🥁
I put this album on the turntable at the radio station when it was new. I only took the needle off long enough to turn the album over! Every song, love at first listen!!!
I think ( although I love so many of their songs too) the last time I have heard someone say that their favorite band was Supertramp was Julia Louis Dreyfus on her show New Adventures of Old Christine. The way it was written into the sitcom, her friends/family were ribbing her for liking Supertramp. This is one of those bands that was saving a lot of us from having to hear disco all the freaking time in that era.
Hi BizMatik, I suggest you look at all Supertramp's songs live. The Live in Paris concert is available on TH-cam and there are several singles pulled from that concert are also available. I saw them in 1979 in Seattle. I've been following Roger Hodgson for years, since he left the band in 1983. My favorite now is "Another Man's Woman" (Live), Rick Davies on piano and Roger Hodgson on guitar. TOO GOOD!
I looked at what Supertramp you have done from Breakfast in America... 2 song that you haven't done that are both EPIC are Child of Vision and Gone Hollywood.
Hi Biz!This song came out just as I was preparing to go on my first trip to America, so I feel a lot of nostalgia and memories when I listen to this! One of my favourites! Peace and Blessings to you and yours from Australia.
Why aren't they in many people's top five? Well, I've been a long time fan of Supertramp, going back to their early albums and I mean at the time they came out. For instance, I wore out "Crisis What Crisis* back in the day ...a much underrated album. You're quite right, Biz. Catchy songs, meaningful lyrics, great instrumentation and yes, they can play. They weren't seen as a cool band ...they weren't hard or tough, they looked like geography teachers and they didn't have sex appeal, thus didn't attract a female following. Plus they didn't really fit into any particular genre. None of the aforementioned issues bothered me any, but they are issues that bother many people. For me, it's all about their music ...and it's stood the test of time, for sure.
The whole album is fire - as are their previous albums "Crisis What Crisis" and "Crime of the Century". All three albums are worth full-album reviews. The "Even in the Quietest Moments" album isn't far behind them either. On this song, I always love the use of trombone and tuba to fill out the sound and add that bass horns feel. And yup, Gym Class Heroes used the basis of this song, and their song is credited to McCoy/Hodgson/Davies :)
Always in my longstanding top 5 with the Beatles, Genesis, Led Zepp, and Floyd. Not fussed about this track or the album. Go for 'Crime' or 'Crisis what Crisis.'
Musically, a banger. Lyrically, just slightly poking fun at some features of American culture. Songwriter Roger Hodgson being a Brit, quite understandable
@@watchbizmatik The album cover is a parody of the view you might see from an airplane window seat while on approach to a New York airport. 🙂 The diner waitress is posed like the Statue of Liberty, holding a menu and a glass of orange juice in place of the statue's tablet and torch, and the New York cityscape behind it is built out of cups, saucers, silverware, condiment bottles, napkin dispensers... It was a lot more obvious back in the 70s when we bought the album on vinyl, since you got to see it as a 12"x12" piece of art rather than a postage-stamp-sized thumbnail image.
Gym Class Heroes copied the "Take a look at my Girlfriend" part in 2006 and he thought that was original by them. I'm 24 so that was my first exposure to it too
@@3xclusiv3sodak Thank you for explaining that. I have never heard of Gym Class Heroes, which isn't surprising since I am old enough to be your grandmother 😩 ACK !!! thanks for reminding me, in my mind I'm still young. At least I remember and appreciate Supertramp.
Damn I love thls song. Been a favorite of mine forever. Never gets old. I remember at couple decades ago some douche rap group sampled it for some horrible song.
EVERYBODY owned this album back in the day.
I need my copy
Yeah Every Teen Had This Album in 79
That’s just straight facts.
you bet !!!! every song on this album a hit

HAAAAAA! Classics! Everyone ract like him on the first listen
I bought this Supertramp album when it came out in 79 and Supertramp Live in Paris. Used to love playing them while driving down the road.
The real hidden gem on this album is “Child of Vision” IMO. One of my all time favorite albums, and Supertramp is a top5 for me.
I agree and Gone Hollywood is the other real gem.
I will definitely get to that one

This is one of the best albums of all time, IMO. Brilliant! It was a revelation to the 16 year old me back in 1979!
Check out their live videos, the Paris concert was awesome 🔥

Crime of the Century album is a gem
Love ST!!
Yes you've seen my Top 5 but I also told you Supertramp is battling for #6 with Genesis & Styx so that's not bad
My favorite on this album is a deep cut called: Just Another Nervous Wreck
Supertramp has never been underrated.
I still do...CD...!!!!
Biz in America
lmao

Lovin it!
Hey my Man, react to Coverdale/Page, the song, "Over now."
You'll love it.

Sorry Biz. Most of what you thought was new, was very old.
crazy world lol

not much of a Girlfriend...
Don't be too hard on Gym Class Heroes. You should react to them now that you've heard this song
I like them they were different
Gym class SMUCKS, only this artistic about them is being RIP OFF ARTISTS! They made such a mess of such a great SUPERTRAMP song! Shame
