This screams of inspiration from Robert Chambers' "The King in Yellow". You have strange beings and worlds not understood by mortals being elaborated upon through subtle and surreal theatre involving masks, a play that no one knows the ending to, but supposedly reveals irresistible yet horrific truths to whoever reads/watches it, a protagonist who seeks this knowledge and disappears as a result, and the attention of these supernatural beings being drawn to the protagonist as a result of their obsession leading them to delve too deep. The ending of the first part is even possibly a rendition of the most infamous climax of "The King in Yellow", which goes as follows:
    Camilla: "You, sir, should unmask."
    Stranger: "Indeed?"
Cassilda: "Indeed it's time. We have all laid aside disguise but you."
    Stranger: "I wear no mask."
Camilla: (Terrified, aside to Cassilda.) "No mask? No mask!"
Tarnold is terrified as Camilla is in this scene, but also euphoric. It's an eldritch scene, where he finally has the knowledge he sought, but at a high cost, as he realizes he must be undone to know it. Just as no one can see "The King in Yellow" and live due to having seen beyond the King's "mask", no one without a mask (having died) can witness the finality of Soates' masterpiece, as she was merely the one who transcribed it, while the real writer is Death itself, Kindred and the other spirits accompanying them.

I really loved how the actors' bodies adopted the spirits after putting on their masks.
Its said that everyone wears a mask, that being the version of themselves they present to others. So if you dawn a new mask, you fundamentally change.
Also the thing with the wood from that tree still being alive even when separated makes me think to how thats basically life even in death.
So like how spirits are basically dead, when the tree blooms. (when someone puts on their mask) they can come back to life in a sense.

in the very end, death is eternal until nobody is alive to be claimed by death. The Kindred is of a tale spoken in many countries and factions. Just like Ionia's depiction of death is very different from other countries (a child wearing a mask, together with her wolf, playing around in the forests until duty calls), but the base 'foundation' of such tales stay the same; always two, always together. Therefore I think the tale of The Kindred can be dug so deep, it's endless. Many people may have rewritten such stories with their own 'witnesses'. A legend spoken of over and over to be constructed further and different from past ones.
Yet death remains eternal, until forgotten. But in the universe of Runeterra, death has a face (or two). And they will always be the Kindred until the very end of existence.

I don't know if this has ever been said but "Demacia" sounds similar to "Demagia" which in spanish can more or less be translated to "no magic" as "magia" means magic and "de-" is a prefix which gives the meaning of the contrary (more or less). More than spanish i'd say it's based on latin or something but "Demacia" literally meaning "no magic" makes a lot of sense as they are against magic.

Theory: the spirits disappearing in the purgatory mordekaiser went to after his original death were being "eaten" by the vulture as they were completely forgotten. Mordekaiser, because of his conquest during life and by virtue of really, really wanting to continue existing, resisted the vulture and was able to finagle his way back to the realm of the living. His subsequent conquest guaranteed his continuing existence because now he'll never be forgotten.

  • @BrontiThor
    @BrontiThor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

So wait, if everyone just becomes immortal, or undying. Like let's say the ruination takes over all of runeterra, then in theory what Necrit is saying could happen. Death becomes a far away concept, and all death spirits like kindred loose all belief in them, then they hunt each other, and are forgotten then they are preyed upon by the vulture, who for the time being would be the strongest of the death spirits by far. Until he runs out of prey and is forgotten himself.
This technically means that the ruination is a direct threat to kindred. Which means that maybe if veigo goes too far in his quest to find his wife, kindred or some other death spirits might step in to stop him from ruining all of runeterra.

Most likely. What I don't understand it's why there are two different entities of death coexisting. I'm.not talking about Wolf and Lamb since they are pretty much one, but Kindred and the fading idol. This idol is almost forgotten but it's like still "there" while kindred is very active doing reaper things. How Grey Man/Kindred replaced that idol in the first place? Or this idol isn't a reaper but an idol for another things entirely? That's what's confusing to me more than mask mother and vulture.

I believe Soates met kindred in some sort of death she came back from, and told the story as she saw it. In the story “all kindreds eves” there is a story teller who scuffs the “pale man split himself in two” story and wolf says he isn’t familiar with this telling, kindred remarks “a tale throughout time is tainted by each tongue that tells it [...] we know a truer story of which this faint dramaturgy projects only shadow.” This leads me to believe that the kindred are the most believed incarnation of death in runetera so they are the form “death” takes. Similar to how Evelyn was “born” from human suffering from a simple dark spirit, kindred was “born” when Soates popularized their physical form. This would also explain why in dialogue when the mask mother asks “do you know my name” to lamb and wolf they respond “mother” because Soates was the person who brought the kindred from being an omnipotent being with no form in the world, to lamb and wolf. This would also explain how kindred’s spirit blossom skin is cannon in runeterra because it is simply how Ionia’s stories and fables about the kindred allow them to incarnate into that form while staying largely the same to the original lamb and wolf as the Ionian perception of lamb and wolf is derived from the original story. Just my thoughts since I don’t believe they are spirits from my interpretation.

This is just an idea and maybe someone can help me with this. I don't remember if the lore states where the Kindred masks came from. Is it possible that after the pale man split himself in two, Kindred was just a soul split in two and the mask mother gave them masks? I don't know, it's just an idea of how the mask mother could be Kindred's creator but also still have the original origin story.

Dude this is awesome, Kindred Stuff it's absolutely the most complex and mysterious Lore of this game, it's so complex it makes me wanna ear story's of Kindred before I go to Sleep, becouse they are beautiful and they represent Death as a totally diferent concept of the normal Horror Death Story's, and now I think of this could be Khada Jhin a 'Fan' or maybe it may follow the spirit legends of Death, and he uses a Mask, he is other one that sees Death as Peace of Art, and he is a Artist that shows the Death of the World, maybe he thinks that if he has a mask he can bring more people to belive in the Kindred, to make them more strong as a Spirit, Jhin can be so related to Kindred in this point of View! This alludes to the theory that Wolf and Lamb must destroy each other (or at least deal with each other) at the end of their story as well. This emphasis also appeared in their classic lore and Spirit Blossoms as well, since Wolf is always seen to be drooling at Lamb, wanting to eat her, whilst Lamb wants to hunt Wolf down.
I've always thought that it's weird that only Lamb has the human form whilst Wolf is just a mist, but now I understand that it's to balance things out and keep Lamb on her feet and equal to Wolf. (It shouldn't be just Predator and Prey, but rather Predator and Hunter). Also, I assume that the two were never really "born" at the same time, it seems that Wolf is older and more primal than Lamb, which also fits well because before advancement in civilization, every world must experience struggle for survival in the wildlife more than having a satisfying death, which is a relatively late concept for intelligent lifeforms.

I know the whole "Vastaya" thing is kind of a meme now, but it could still be valid, to an extent.
Some Lore blurbs we got from Nexus Blitz during the Spirit Blossom event mention a Vastayan race of frog-men called "the Canghapi", who had left Ionia at some point. So it is likely that the Canghapi migrated to the Blessed Isles, made a home there, and started worshiping spirits, crafting masks and donning them so that they could act as vessels through which they could act (much like the actors in this short story). That would explain the Mask Mother and Forgotten Icon cards from Legends of Runeterra, they're spirits who possess mortal bodies through their masks.
Another theory that I think we can grasp from this is that Vilemaw could be another spirit of death, embodying "the Spider" (whose mask is worn by the Soulspinner, another Canghapi). However, unlike the Forgotten Icon, whose worshipers have all died and thus he is being, ya know, forgotten, Vilemaw has an entire cult to remember him, which would explain why he needs Elise and why he rewards her with eternal youth.
    Just my 2 cents.
