"a bummer song by somebody else" turned into a bar of gold by opening the song for us to look at. What a power. Many lives are like this messy story, mine is. It neednt have been this way.
Mary brought this song to a level that everyone can actually understand what it's about! I've heard this song since MTV days & this is THE FIRST time I've heard the song. "A bummer song written by somebody else.. " Too funny...
This made me really respect Bruce Springsteen as a songwriter. Everyone knows his version, Clarence Clemons, Courtney Cox dancing, its high energy...this version makes the lyrics, which are really really sad really resonate.
absolutely beautiful version..and his lyrics are something else...beautiful ballad..I love Bruce's version..but this is a lovely take on the song..different perspective.
If angels are real...I envision they would look and sound like Mary Chapin Carpenter...she has that innocent lovely effect...an almost surreal majestic effect where I wonder if humans can really be that beautiful in heart and soul. A siren's voice that can charm you into not giving up on life...even amid a pandemic where we are loading thousands of souls into refrigerated trucks to be hauled away without a last goodbye...
This is SUCH a powerful, lonely, rich version of this song... I'm really blown away by the completely different messages from this one song by her and Bruce. His is celebratory and hers is like it's coming from a lonely someone 2 minutes away from suicide... It's incredible...
I've seen her in performance at a couple of venues in northern Virginia. She's a beautiful writer, guitarist, and vocalist, and amazing at interpreting others' works.
As 'rustylavalamp' says below, it was released as the B side of the Almost Home single from 1999 and was recorded live at Madison, WI. Springsteen is nearly always great but MCC is always sublime!
With this, Mary Chapin Carpenter shows she is as great an interpreter of other's songs as she is a singer-songwriter. Check out "Downtown Train" on Hometown Girl, she makes it her own.
@@JamesHarris-hl2bm Actually, as much as I love MCC, and I do, her cover of Passionate Kisses actually prevented me from diving into her music for a long time. I'd heard good things about her, but I thought that was way too tame and smooth compared to Lucinda's version. Glad I gave Mary a 2nd look, though. She is an American treasure.
@@JamesHarris-hl2bm A little while ago, I put together a list of my absolute, top of the line albums -- just 9 out of my entire collection. And both of those women are on there -- Sweet Old World and Stones In The Road.
And here I thought I would hear a cover of Artie Shaw's 1941 hit, but I get Bette Midler ("Do You Wanna Dance") meets Bruce Springsteen? Just kidding; most anything Chapin touches comes out good. Still in love, 25 years later; keep going.
"This is a bummer song written by somebody else." For certain, It wasn't a slam ... not many slam the song's author. + She wouldn't slam a song and then do it ... do it damn well, in fact. That's a compliment .... not a slam.
where is She now..I really appreciate her. I have a lock of her hair. she is wonderful with fans. I just got the music... boy!! where Has all The 💓 gone.. bless her..
She's still around. Unfortunately, they don't play smart songs that require thinking anymore, and since she's not 20, and since she's not in tacky videos, looking cheap, they're not interested. Sad.
Hal Zendle it’s on a CD single for the song Almost Home. It’s listed on Amazon.com. I got a copy of it when it first came out. Unfortunately, that’s the only place you can find the song besides on here.
cougar24 I got "Dancing in the Dark" mixed up with another Springsteen song that Chapin does: "My Love Won't Let You Down"...MLWLYD is the song I'd really like a recorded copy of...Thank you anyway!
To all who appreciate the "different perspective", I submit my thesis that it shows a contrast between female pathos and male pathos. But yeah, I totally agree with everyone who said it opened up the lyrics of the song. That was my experience, and the reason why I subjected my reaction to deeper scrutiny.
the best about this is her opening: 'this is a bummer song written by somebody else'! So, why you singing it (aside from the fact it's nice poetry...) ?
It's a "bummer song" because it's about loneliness, and the desperate need to do almost anything to ease the feeling, even if it's only temporary. I remember those feelings, and actions, from the late 70s - early 80s.
This is the 2nd song from Born in the USA that Bruce Springsteen gave uptempo music to but the lyrics are not very upbeat. The other is the title song. I love this version of the song and I keep hoping that someday he will do an acoustic version of this song.
Love this version of this song, Mary delivers it like no one else can. A true artist!!

Why does it have to be like this.?
Don't you just love that intro?
Oh yeah and the way she sings it, Heavenly.

This is the first time I actually thought about what the song was about, and I've heard it 500 times.
Dude. I just said that to my wife. Brilliant version.
But not Bruce's fault, eh?
I love the way she does this song...wow
I. Love. This. Song. Thank you so much for. It. God bless you. Love you so much
OMG what a voice.
Nothing less than brilliant, Miss seeing her at the old twist and shout..
Thank you for this version. A bummer song but so true for a lot of us. Didn't listen to the words before.

Amazing song for a Twin Flame connection!! 😥😥
every note and word a gem
Wow, ist das gut!
I heard this the other and its been in my head all week....great job MCC!
I used to have this on the B side cassingle of "Almost Home". Lost it somewhere along life, but, loved this cover... Thanks for uploading it.
Love Mary so much
MCC is truly an artist and I thank you for this.
Great rendition

Simply stunning 🌹
2021 and still one of the most beautiful covers I have ever heard of this song
A wonderful version !
Beautiful~!~~!!!~~
always Dancing in the Dark~
She's CHAPIN.....!! She can sing ANYTHING she wants.....and it is always FABULOUS !! YOU GO, GIRLFRIEND !! I'm sure "The Boss" appreciates your nod!
A very many of the best songs are bummer songs.
Full of bitter sweet sentimental from a talented singer who is the top of her career. I like this song !
Excellent cover.

Changes it all around doesn't it? Great version I like it a lot. I found Mary 8 songs ago and played several of them twice or more. Going for more.
Haunting
amazing version!!
mesmerising voice. love her all songs. some are exceptionally heart touching.
.
wow! such an amazing voice... it gives me goosebumps n believe me, only the best would provoke goosebumps for me..
Incredible...and current message!

"Message keeps getting clearer... I check my look in the mirror... That's how I wanna change my clothes, my hair, my face..."

Yes, you're correct, Michael. She nails it, and let's not leave out Passionate Kisses, which is a Lucinda Williams song.

@@MattJocks Yeah, nobody does that like Lucinda Williams, who is herself a great singer/songwriter.

@@MattJocks That sounds like good listening to me! Ironic. Just finished listening to A World Without Tears.
Mary Chapin Carpenter is a true poet and the voice of an angel! I can hear a bit of a Tracy Chapman vibe in her voice.
i hope for not many years i want this at my funeral sorry bruce MCC IS JUST SOMTHING ELSE
Really 🥺 reminds me of home

She meant that she writes bummer songs. But this one isn't hers.
Apocalypse Plough How do you know what she meant? Asked her did you?
love this
Amazing -
It is my deep hope that she include this on a audio recording (soon).

best advice i got when first learning to play was...take a song and make it your own....here's a great example of that approach..
I love you r song's i love you so much. Big hugs and kisses for you
Would love to hear Bruce's thoughts on this.
Wish I was there with 😮 and like you
😊
Where is this from? Thanks so much for sharing. One great songwriter paying tribute to another.
What would Bruce say to this phantastic version of his song ?
Perhaps he's taking singing lessons from Mary, Even on his best night he couldn't pull off this kind of delivery..
what album is this on?
Where's Springstein?
It's FRUNKEN-STEEN!
Baby girl, your the best. I have has seen her three times. Twice at the Greek theater in Los Angeles. She is just incredible.

Is she related to the Carpenters siblings of 70s fame?
No but she is related to Harry Chapin.
nice, thank you@@MattJocks
the best about this is her opening: 'this is a bummer song written by somebody else'!
So, why you singing it (aside from the fact it's nice poetry...) ?
A tribute to a fellow singer from NEW JERSEY!!
Well, Then.
My answer would be to state the obvious - almost all the best songs written are songs about sadness and heartbreak, ergo, the "bummer" comment. ;)
It's a "bummer song" because it's about loneliness, and the desperate need to do almost anything to ease the feeling, even if it's only temporary. I remember those feelings, and actions, from the late 70s - early 80s.

It's only a bummer if you sing it 200x slower than it's written
No doubt!!!
Great rendition but discourteous to refer to Bruce Springsteen as 'somebody else'.
Oh I don't think so. She's being funny but it acknowledges that no one needs to be told who wrote it.
That was hideous!
