I remember first seeing the WSM in the 90s, my all time favorite is Magnus Ver Magnussen. You had the British guy with the big ears I think Gary Taylor is his name. He won once. There was an Arab guy who had the biggest arms in the world at the time. 93-95 those years. Later on came Joko Ahoula, Magnus Sammussen, you the big Lithuanian who would win later on. Phil Pfister the American, then came Mariusz Pudianowski.
I think the "arab" guy you are thinking of is Manfred Hoeberl. He is Austrian and was born in the same town as Arnold Schwarzenegger. He had 26" arms and was awesome in the early 90s. Too bad he got into that car wreck in 95'. I would have liked to see him win WSM.
In 1997 I attended a seminar Bill put on at the USPF national masters meet in Austin. Awesome guy and I spent time with him at the 2016 IPF Classic world championship. Truly enjoyable time.
I watch strongman casually, never watched a body building tournament beyond highlights but I love your channel Nick. The stories & drama is always captivating.
Do Don Reinhoudt!! He’s from Western NY and my pops used to “work out” with him or as my dad said watch him and pray that he never needed a spot. He’s still strong in his 70’s! Will come into Buffalo and go to some powerlifting gyms and still embarrass these young roiders, who think he’s just some fat old dude. He was pre Kaz.
Excellent video. I personally had the pleasure of meeting him at my gym in 2007. He's amazing individual and an evenly intelligent man. Was still very built even then. How the hell can you not know this legend?
Kaz was a beast and the best ever. I think that the "World's Strongest Man" organization acted like cowards when they banned him. Its such a shame to deprive one of the greatest athletes of all time, the accolades and recognition that is due him. Bill Kazmaier is remembered and revered among those who have spent decades pounding the iron. Good post, thanks Nick.
The Kaz!!! GOAT! He wasn’t just winning he was demolishing the competition! Kaz and Magnús Ver Magnússon are my two favorite. Mariusz looked like a bodybuilder and strong AF!!!
Mariusz admitted he was jacked to the max. Served bans and still came back steroid loaded by his own admission!!! Tainted champ!!! Look at his physique compared to any other competitor in the years he was dominant. But amazing to watch!!!
I'm old enough to remember seeing kaz compete at the WSM and boy did he have an insane look on his face when doing the events I think he scared alot of the competitors. A superb sportsman and comes across as a really nice fella as well.
Very cool, i saw him tip over a car in the mall when i was a kid. He lived in Auburn, AL and owned a gym(Kaz’s gym) there back then, also used to sponsor our little league teams. I know he did a strength exhibition with the 'power team' at a local church when they came to town. Seemed like a great guy but i dont think he lives there now.
@Nick S&P I think you should do a video on canadian-born strongman, Tom Magee, who also competed in the "World's Strongest Man" and powerlifting events. Tom Magee, who turns 60 in July, is a former WWF wrestler and is also probably better remembered in the biker pit-brawl with former NFL linebacker, Brian "Boz" Bosworth, in the 1991 movie, "Stone Cold". **Note: Tom Magee was attacked and beaten badly this past May (2018) in a dispute over a parking space while performing duties as a neighborhood watchman in the city of Los Angeles. Fortunately, he was released from the hospital and should be able to recover.
His 2nd place in 1988 was controversial and personally I don’t think they wanted him to come back and win. Especially since he had his injury which made him weaker. That would have further proved his claim as best ever. No other athlete has been banned from being too good. It’s ridiculous that it was allowed to happen. Would easily have 6 titles pretty much guaranteed and it’s highly possible it could have been 2 more on top of that.
He visited South Africa in the early 80's where one night I bumped into him in a place called Hillbrow and had a 20 minute chat, very humble and friendly guy.
I may be mistaken and i know i'll get the names misspelled. But i read that in 1983 Douglas Edmunds took over as head refferie and alot of the old wsm staff was replaced. Duglas was good friends with Jon Pall and most in the orginization was pro british. By the time they Let Kaz back in he just had to many injuries that held him back. Kaz got screwed big time. Most strong men have good runs for around 5 years. I don't care who you are but when you use gear and you move around weight that would normaly crush a normal man it will age you quickly.
Great video and great info. Kazmaier is on the Mt. Rushmore of American Strongmen along with Anderson, Shaw and we can argue over Pfister, Wilhelm or Reinhoudt. Thanks buddy I always enjoy your videos.
The year is 1994. I'm 8 years old. It's 8am on a Sunday morning. ESPN is on, showing a rerun of the 81' wsm. The Kaz was squatting a cage full of women on his back. His intensity was so great my nose started to bleed. My dad just sat there, arms crossed, drinking his coffee. We made eye contact and his nose started to bleed too. Thank you for this moment Kaz.
It’s sad but also highly impressive at the same time. To be so good there’s little point having a competition with him in it. It really elevates his legacy in Strong man competition to possibly the highest level. The man was an absolute legend.
Hey nick, odd question but can you make a straight forward diet video? I’m tired of 2,000 videos of all these “secret” bs diets and you’ve had (have) a physique most people wanting to get into it would want to have.
Thanks for the strongman coverage nick I competed for about 5 years till a PR deadlift claimed my back! I am only 33 and KAZ has been my strongman idol forever it hurts my heart that people forget and never know the legends that created these sports hahaha also In larger than life when kaz being the first to do a log press ever didnt know how to lift so just side ways lifts to an event win.....also have talked to kaz nicest savage ever! Bodybuilding is the way to build a beautiful and harmonious body (do not pay attention to today's steroid freak). This is Body Building. One of the benefits you make by doing this is the power you get. But it is a different thing to train in order to gain strength. There is the difference between bodybuilding and strongman. Every man in the gym is not bodybuilding, do not confuse them.
Cool video Nick. I used to watch the strong man competitions when i was just a kid, part of the reason i got interested in the weight room. Keep up the good work . S.Spro
Thanks for making a video on Bill Kazmaier. When I was a kid we we're so poor that I had to use an antenna to get only one TV channel. On the one channel I had they would always play Bill Kazmaier world strongest man rerun competitions. Bill Kazmaier is the Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali of the world strongest man. He was my hero as a kid
Bill Kazmaier was one of the best Worlds strongest man competitors of all time, if not the best. I remember reading an article about him in a British magazine in the 1980’s called “strength athlete” (if I remember rightly). I remember one of the lines from the article was about Bill being a bouncer and oil rig roughneck! I’m sure he is still involved with the WSM, as I do remember him being present at a few lately. Can I please ask that when you reference another video (like the Tom Platz video you mentioned), can you please link to the video in the description? I watched several of your videos yesterday and found it really difficult to find the video that was mentioned in another video. Merry Christmas and greetings from the UK
Great vid. It barely touched his accomplishments though. If I remember, his last WSM he took 1st in every event, by choice. He picked up the Inver stone, looked through the hold, put it on his shoulder and carried it across the street into the local bar. Placed it on the bar and ordered a beer.
dynomax101 Seen Platz in his heyday! Those legs were not just for show! That dude was legit. They didn’t have fake weights. They would have ran him out of the gym. It was hardcore in those days!
He used to do commentary for WSM when they used to tape it for ESPN. I also remember him from the Met-Rx commercial curling heavy dumbbells like it was nothing as an announcer.
i trained with ronnie collins in the late 70s bill was one of his best bates when he came to england i seen him bench 780 in are gym. he was massive. and a nice bloke
O,D Wilson was another 1 that got cheated out of a win at the wsm. He was dominating the power events, but wsm put to many endurance and speed events in it for him to win. In the last event they had to hold a pack of bricks on their back and run around a long track. O.D would have won it if it wasn't for that stupid event. Now there is a stongman event where there was 2 man teams. Kaz and O.D were a team and dominated the other teams.
I used to watch WSM back in the late 90's and early to mid 2000's. Mariusz was my favorite WSM. He was an absolute genetically inclined freak. Magnus Samuelsson was fun to watch too. I enjoyed Bill's commentary and his interviews. He was integral part of interviewing these elite athletes because he was one himself. It's cool watching a former champion with competitive insight interview other champions and competitors. Big fan of Bill.
Don't forget that in 1979 he was dominating the field and had a big lead going into the last event...... A tug of war contest, which was laughable and the points rewarded for that event was higher than the power events. He lost the tug of war and lost his lead in the final event in 1979. Since there was so much attention paid to that event, he worked his ass off and practiced the tug and war and began his dominant run thereafter. Even being told not to compete, he could have been and should have been a four time Champion.
Kaz is the best athlete in history in one more category: the scariest face ever. Man, those faces he made in I think 1982. before sumo wrestling, c'mon. That is PURE crazyness. As pure as it can get. That should be the measuring point of how much fear athletes put in their opponents before competition. Even the Iron Mike look wasnt that animalistic and purely instinct based as Kaz'. And we are talkin fucking Mike Tyson, perhaps the most feared man on planet, a guy that won like over 50% of his fights before he ever entered the ring. And thats not just a random number thrown without any tought behind it, actually 50% is pretty low estimation, one for which Im sure Im not pimping that number. Mike really did won a LOT, Id say a majority of his fights by pure intimidation. I will allways remember watching his opponents enter the ring, their entrance song playing, dancing, shadow boxing on the way, being massaged and pumped by their whole corner crew: -"You are the man, remember how much effort you'd put into this, remember the preparations, remember the camp, it all comes on this, if you loose it was all in vain, but HEY!, you will CRUSH him, coz you trained like a beast that you are...." etc, etc, raising their testosterone/adrenaline levels to the max. Than flexing in the ring when they would take off their (whats the word for that boxing "coat"? lol) and when the public roar would reach crazy levels of loudness. And than, almost as if a damn dark shaddow would fall on the venue, heavy, black, THICK shaddow. It would all stop and go quiet. The fighter that was previously running and shaddow boxing arround the ring, still pumped from the entrance, would VISUALLY slow down. He would stop slowly running and jumping, mesmerized. Than he would suddenly cramp, almost as if he would wake up from hypnosis and suddenly remember where he is and what he came to do, he would throw quick uppercut motion in the air, trying to convince himself that he didnt loose yet, painfully unaware of how much, of all punches, uppercut mimics a motion of going into fetal pose - the ultimate and last body reaction to the utter fright and horror before unconciousness. Mike would slowly come closer to the ring by every step, closer and closer, step by step, while everybody there and infront of TV almost imagined the thumps of his rhytmic steps drumming a death march to the gallows for the poor bastard unlucky enough to cross paths with the death incarnated. No one talking to him, no one massaging his neck. Eyes dead cold, you could see the emotional emptyness in them, , just a will to do his job without any remorse. Only rarely there would be a flash of a split second when you could se damn hate in his eyes. That cocky man that was so wide and tall as a peacock entering the ring just 15 minutes earlyier would visually tighten up, his broad wide shoulders would pull inside, his high held head and chin would in a turtle like motion start to enter his body. He looked as if he lost 20 pounds of muscles in 15 minutes. By the time Tyson would enter the ring his opponent wouldnt even trying to hyde fear any more, as if he realized how unneccessary and in vain all that sharade was. He would almost start to openly BEG for mercy. You could almost hear his never spoken toughts: "Its just a sport", "I didnt ment to" "I know you are the champ" etc. bell goes off, Mike goes into frenzy bezerk mode, throwing punches anywhere, just that they are as strong and violent as they can be. Minute or two in, the counting was over, the belt was raised high,it was over. And that same exact scenario would be repeated time after time after time after time almost to the point. There was no fighter, that was so successfull in intimidating his opponents and subduing them into giving up by pure psychic games. At least Im not aware of another one. That Mike Tyson looked like ordinary tough guy when compared to that self slapping and growls of Kaz. Perhaps the best staredown in fighting sports that happened before MMA match Crocop VS W.Silva 2 looked as love emotion exchange compared to that crazy moment. Kaz should really be the measuring point for intimidation. As in "man, did you saw that staredown?? So damn intense, the guy on left reached at least 0,87 Kaz's." Iron Mike was perhaps arround 0,93 Kaz's. Since no one but the man itself could possibly reach one full Kaz.
Kaz used to show up at the gym I used back in the late 1980’s/early 90’s. An extraordinarily immense man, he looked like a prize bull in a sweatshirt...incredible. A really nice bloke, too.
Talked with Billy Kaz in 2008 at the Mohegan Sun during the WSM Gran Prix. Super cool guy and I was surprised that he remembered my wife and I from a powerlifting meet that we both competed in years earlier. To many he remains the greatest WSM ever.
I is refreshing to listen to someone so passionate and knowledgeable as you sir. Great Video superb content , will watch again. Terrible shame this great athlete was robbed from realizing his true potential.
Hahaha, not letting compete the world strongest man at the world strongest man competition ... euuuuhmmm. Should we go back to square wheels. Because the circular wheels are way better...
Kaz is the first person i ever saw eyes change color during a lift, he is a legend in wsm, as much as magnús ver Magnússon, sigmarsson, Samuelsson and Shaw and pudz. Ppl now just think Thor and martins eddie hall, and brian shaw are the strongest ever and don't know the humble beginnings of these sports like Arnolds and wsm.
I met bill in 1981 in charlevoix mi st a powerlifting competition where he would do a few demonstrations and give autographs. My father was a frequent workout partner for bill. He pulled a hamstring but still squatted 800+pounds 8 times. After we went to pizza hut and he ate 6 extra large pizzas. He was incredibly gracious and for me it still remains one of my greatest memories
Mariusz is a great athlete, but the split of WSM hurts his legitimacy. I doubt he would have won 5 times if Big Z didn't compete in the IFSA WSM. Besides the IFSA WSM counts just as much - if not more - so Big Z has won 6 times.
I always liked Mariusz, but by his own admission, late in his career, he was asked in interview, "Have you ever taken steroids?" - Answer. "Yes" Second question... "when was the last time you took steroids?" Answer- "About 5 minutes ago".
Balkamp because some people have other interests dipshit not everyone knowa who who is. You sound like a teen girl obsessing over Bieber or something. Act like an adult.
I can relate to this kind of.. I was banned from all local pool tournaments in the 90's because possible entrants asked if I was playing and if I was, they wouldn't register. No turn out. I even offered to play one handed and was still refused.
He is without a doubt one of greatest strength athletes that has ever lived. They really shafted him by blocking him from WSM. I have met him a couple of times now and he always has time to chat and if he meets you once he remembers you and he is still in pretty good shape.

Later on came Joko Ahoula, Magnus Sammussen, you the big Lithuanian who would win later on.
Phil Pfister the American, then came Mariusz Pudianowski.
ComplexBlackness *Jouko Ahola
Haha Arab 😂 he was an Austrian called Manfred Hoeberl 👍🏼
I think the "arab" guy you are thinking of is Manfred Hoeberl. He is Austrian and was born in the same town as Arnold Schwarzenegger. He had 26" arms and was awesome in the early 90s. Too bad he got into that car wreck in 95'. I would have liked to see him win WSM.
The man is a LEGEND! There is NO doubt he would hold the record for most wins if he was allowed to continue!
In 1997 I attended a seminar Bill put on at the USPF national masters meet in Austin. Awesome guy and I spent time with him at the 2016 IPF Classic world championship. Truly enjoyable time.
Kaz could have won 5. And yes, his opinions matter on strength and lifting totals
Kazmaier was a beast and his feats were unique. He is also a nice person and a great teacher.
A bouncer or a lumberjack, that killed me for some reason lol.
Lumberjack killed me as well lol
Yes sir! I will leave the bar now. Sorry about the disturbance. Just give me three steps Mr.
Well said Robert. Fucking joke they banned him.
Nick's videos are getting better & better. He is covering various topics related to fitness, strength, bodybuilding & prowrestling.
The Kaz!!!
Bill Kazmaier was the shit and i grew up watching him on the strong man contests!!! Bill Kazmaier if you read this thumbs up to you!!!
Another amazing video, i got into bodybuilding, powerlifting and strongman competitions through this channel and haven't looked back ever since.
I’m so weak that they won’t let me compete, I get his frustration
I used to watch The World's Strongest Man every year. Bill was a great commentator. I don't know why ESPN doesn't televise it anymore.
Son of Tiamat cause LeBron James doesn't do it
CBS Sports Network carries it now.
Great guy met him at the Arnold classic couple year's ago and spoke with him..and he was still a huge man.. very cool as well.
@Nick S&P
I think you should do a video on canadian-born strongman, Tom Magee,
who also competed in the "World's Strongest Man" and powerlifting events.
Tom Magee, who turns 60 in July, is a former WWF wrestler
and is also probably better remembered in the biker pit-brawl
with former NFL linebacker, Brian "Boz" Bosworth,
in the 1991 movie, "Stone Cold".
**Note:
Tom Magee was attacked and beaten badly this past May (2018)
in a dispute over a parking space while performing duties
as a neighborhood watchman in the city of Los Angeles.
Fortunately,
he was released from the hospital
and should be able to recover.
This is a fucking shame. We must never forget this! Mariusz pudzianowski is a champion in worlds most athletic man. We also never forget this shit.
I saw him in a bodybuilding contest in Tampa in the late 80s. He curled 225 lbs 10 times! He was a true giant. One of the biggest men I've ever seen.
Not as good as castleberry
Mick Jones pretty much. He could bench press a fucking mountain.
Mick Jones Buddy, he’s 100% natural, he can most likely curl like 600lbs
Rumour has it, he even benched his momma.
Castleberry is my favorit natty vegan record holder powerlifter
it politic bro
It’s sad but also highly impressive at the same time. To be so good there’s little point having a competition with him in it. It really elevates his legacy in Strong man competition to possibly the highest level.
The man was an absolute legend.
Hey nick, odd question but can you make a straight forward diet video? I’m tired of 2,000 videos of all these “secret” bs diets and you’ve had (have) a physique most people wanting to get into it would want to have.
Asuh Dude Eat above mainteanance = gainzz. Eat below mainteanance = cutzz. Thank me later
Chicken, rice and steroids.
Thanks for the strongman coverage nick
I competed for about 5 years till a PR deadlift claimed my back!
I am only 33 and KAZ has been my strongman idol forever it hurts my heart that people forget and never know the legends that created these sports hahaha also
In larger than life when kaz being the first to do a log press ever didnt know how to lift so just side ways lifts to an event win.....also have talked to kaz nicest savage ever!
Keep up the awesome work nick
more strongman videos please
Great video, I’ve always loved Bill’s commentary on the Strongman broadcasts; learned a lot from this.
I dont think anyone is wsm can match his raw official bench or millitary press
Bill was incredible in the strongman competitions an all other areas he endeavored in! The cat is just amazing!
Strong man > bodybuilding
G4p > strongman > bodybuilding
Bodybuilding is made a PREGNANT BELLY SHOW nowadays, but bodybuilders up to 1990 were THE BEST STRENGTH ATHLETES who actually turned the PUBLIC ATTENTION towards strength sports and resistance training as good thing to undertake than any other strength sports. Moreover Bodybuilding is not just pushing huge weights and drinking milks and devouring tons of red meat like STRONGMAN IDIOTS, bodybuilding needs total conditioning and strict standards to maintain. Last but not least there were a some really strong bodybuilders like the Mentzer brothers, Jeff King, Matt Mendelhall, Franco Columbu who could give any STRONGMAN run for their money WITHOUT BECOMING HUMAN GORILLAZ with 45 inch waist like Bill Kazmaier who always find GOD after retirement because they are TOO DUMB to write an ORIGINAL article LET ALONE a COMPLETE book on wellness BECAUSE THEY HAVE ONLY 1 TYPE OF SHITTY ROUTINE like 5-3-1 and EATING LIKE A MAMMOTH 😂🤣
Welcome to 2 different sports.
Nobody gives a shit, do what you like. Anything you're good at is a good thing.
S.Spro
Please do a video on mateusz K the new polish strongman and savikas. Strenghth needs more focus on here i think
Please Nick do a video on Zidrunas also
This is a very neat video and you have done remarkably well as a researcher and narrator !
growing up listening to his commentary 😍
Great video. I still watch the old STRONG MAN competitions when they air reruns on tv
Kaz will always be the Strongest Man in the World. There are others, but he was the guy who pushed it over the top.
Dude was a beast! And he actually looked the part. Great pics. Good on the mic too.
What's your take on Tom Platz's squatting feat? Looks real to me.
dynomax101 Seen Platz in his heyday! Those legs were not just for show! That dude was legit. They didn’t have fake weights. They would have ran him out of the gym. It was hardcore in those days!
A true giant and legend and a man with personality and charisma to match! Thanks for this great video. Peace and blessings.
How about o.d Wilson ? Do a vid on him
I would love to see that
O,D Wilson was another 1 that got cheated out of a win at the wsm.
O.D. Wilson and Mark Henry tow of the strongest of all time but no cardio. Th events should be changed to reflect more pure strength than cardio.
54 people who thumbed down are sickened by true greatness.
I will allways remember watching his opponents enter the ring, their entrance song playing, dancing, shadow boxing on the way, being massaged and pumped by their whole corner crew:
-"You are the man, remember how much effort you'd put into this, remember the preparations, remember the camp, it all comes on this, if you loose it was all in vain, but HEY!, you will CRUSH him, coz you trained like a beast that you are...."
etc, etc, raising their testosterone/adrenaline levels to the max.
So damn intense, the guy on left reached at least 0,87 Kaz's."
Iron Mike was perhaps arround 0,93 Kaz's.
Since no one but the man itself could possibly reach one full Kaz.
Kaz used to show up at the gym I used back in the late 1980’s/early 90’s. An extraordinarily immense man, he looked like a prize bull in a sweatshirt...incredible. A really nice bloke, too.
Nick, look up Angus Macaskill.
Or Louis Cyr but Kaz is of the modern era. Kaz is the strongest man who ever lived of the modern era.
Talked with Billy Kaz in 2008 at the Mohegan Sun during the WSM Gran Prix. Super cool guy and I was surprised that he remembered my wife and I from a powerlifting meet that we both competed in years earlier. To many he remains the greatest WSM ever.
So early Vince MacMahon hasn't given out a contract yet.
Kazmaier a legend.
Remember Paul Anderson. Strongest man in the world ever.
ive met bill twice at seminars, what a lovely calm humble man a real gentleman, god bless you mr kazmaier
smh politics in every sport not just bodybuilding
Great video Nick, this was a much needed follow up to the tom platz video.
I’d say pudinkowski is still #1 if for no other reason than he went to prison and competed so soon after his release, and still won.
Mariusz is a great athlete, but the split of WSM hurts his legitimacy. I doubt he would have won 5 times if Big Z didn't compete in the IFSA WSM. Besides the IFSA WSM counts just as much - if not more - so Big Z has won 6 times.
I am definitely going to look up those guys that you fellas had mentioned. I like Anrhony Clark he had an impressive 800 lbs. reverse grip bench press
I always liked Mariusz, but by his own admission, late in his career, he was asked in interview, "Have you ever taken steroids?" - Answer. "Yes"
Second question... "when was the last time you took steroids?"
Answer- "About 5 minutes ago".
Big Z is the greatest ever!!! He ran Pudzianowski really close, even when Mariusz was jacked up to the eyeballs!!
@@01270211136 And you don't think any of the other competitors were on it too??!! At least Mariusz admitted it.
I use to love seeing big Bill on WCW on Saturdays!! He used to perform strongman feats and throw people around bad in the late 80s and early 90s!!!
Whos Bill Kazmaier? Who da fuq doesn't know who Bill Kazmaier is???? What is wrong with kids these days? 🤣
Balkamp i didn’t know who he was either and I was born in 74.
Stephen Holyoake what??
Saw him in person at europes strongest man last year. He was one of the hosts. He is an absolute rock in person.
Oh jeez lookout another “oh these millennials” type guy ... it’s getting old mate !
Balkamp because some people have other interests dipshit not everyone knowa who who is. You sound like a teen girl obsessing over Bieber or something. Act like an adult.
Thanks for filling me in on those where's kaz years. I always wondered why he just disappeared. Great work NSP!
The Kaz what a total freakozoid strongman! Been following Kaz since day 1 !
I can relate to this kind of.. I was banned from all local pool tournaments in the 90's because possible entrants asked if I was playing and if I was, they wouldn't register. No turn out. I even offered to play one handed and was still refused.
He’s the GOAT of strongmen
He is without a doubt one of greatest strength athletes that has ever lived. They really shafted him by blocking him from WSM. I have met him a couple of times now and he always has time to chat and if he meets you once he remembers you and he is still in pretty good shape.
