  • An Envoy Embraer ERJ-175 on behalf of American Airlines, performing flight AA-4168 from Washington National, DC to Key West, FL (USA) with 73 people on board, was climbing out of runway 01 when the crew upon contacting departure declared emergency reporting they had a bird strike on initial climb and they had a flaps failure.
The aircraft stopped the climb at 5000 feet and diverted to Baltimore, MD where the aircraft landed safely on 33L about 45 minutes after departure.

    IMPORTANT:
This video is all about education. It's designed to give aspiring pilots and air traffic controllers a taste of real-world situations through example scenarios and helpful info. But that's not all! Current pilots and controllers can also benefit by listening to real radio communications from around the globe. This helps them stay sharp and think about how they might handle similar situations.
To create these videos, I keep my ear to the ground on major aviation news and events. I check the dates and time zones to see if I can find recordings of the radio conversations. Then, I become a bit of a broken record myself, listening to them repeatedly to create subtitles and identify key moments. Finally, I whip up some animations (or grab them from ADS-B websites) and combine them into a neat package.

I list to BWI all the time. That female ATC is always the friendliest operator I have ever head. 😀

Nice job with the Emergency. Need more controllers like that last one at BWI! 😀

Why divert to Baltimore rather than National or Dulles?

oh. I listened to this yesterday live, as it flew around me-ish. Longer and better runways or something like that. A pilot told me that's the plan from that runway. Also for engine failure

      Longer runways.

National is a no-go for emergencies

*jamescollier3* & *saxmanb777* are correct. Given that there was a bird strike damage issue with a slat, they may not be able to lower flaps and slats to the nominal landing configuration, so protocol calls for the longest runway available - if there are no flight control or fuel status issues that would demand an expedited return to the nearest field. Baltimore (BWI) has longer runways than National (DCA), and American Airlines (Envoy's mainline partner) dispatch determined that it would be easier to rebook AA4168's passengers from Baltimore than from Dulles (IAD).

National is a very short runway. It is tough even when conditions are perfect.
