    Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

    They don't come out and say exactly why they divorced, but this scene makes it clear that Chuck is unable to be honest to Rebecca about his problems, so he shuts her out and reacts in ways that seem completely bizarre to her. Jimmy really tried to show him that he could choose to be better, but Chuck couldn't let go of his fucked up pride.

    • @job489
      @job489 2 ปีที่แล้ว +140

      There's also a hint of Chuck being oversensitive and having to be right in this scene. Although Jimmy mentioned that Chuck's "hypersensitivity to electricity" appeared around the same time they divorced, Rebecca's presence didn't stop Chuck from experiencing his "symptoms". I often wonder if Rebecca's passion to her music and travel factored in the divorce if Chuck's passion in law prevented her from following hers.

    It’s very odd that Chuck never thought to have kids. He’s been married to her for years, yet he divorced her so she could go on with her career. Obviously they had some problems, but they really cared for one another. Not having kids would mean time off work, and obviously he would never stand for that. I also have a hunch is that he feared the kid would love Jimmy more than him.
    Chuck though couldn’t change, or stand the fact Jimmy became a lawyer and thus Chucks condition actually started. His betrayal of Jimmy when denied to work as a lawyer at his firm was straw that broke the camels back for his mental health.
    Not being able to change, or come to terms with your issues can cost you everything, and Chuck is a victim of his inability to change.
    Ironic the more you think about Breaking bad as a whole. It was about Walters change, and we all thought it would be the same for this show, but it isn’t. It is not about change, it’s what happens when Nothing changes. Absolutely brilliant show.

      His problem isn't even a medical condition, it was his choice to live like that. It developed around the time Jimmy got his law degree, so I guess his "condition" is related to his hate towards his brother. Judging by what went on, he was right about Jimmy in a lot of ways, but his attitude was wrong. Older brothers usually play father figure on younger brothers, like what we see in a flashback scene where Charles is reading some book to Jimmy. As an older brother he should have been supportive and smart about his relationship with Jimmy.

    @takakocaesar579 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I just realise a lot of the problems between Chuck and Jimmy's relationship could have been solved if both people were just honest and direct about how they feel. Chuck was never vulnerable about how he felt less loved by his parents than Jimmy. He never shared how upset he was with mom's last words in her deathbed. He never opened up to his wife about how he feels insecure and jealous about Jimmy's charisma. Instead he bottled up all his vulnerable feelings, and eventually it manifested into hatred for Jimmy. He used this hatred to make sure Jimmy never reaches the same level as him, which is a well respected lawyer.
