Howard is the only one of the main characters to seek out a therapist and work on himself. He doesn't give up on his troubled marriage, he tries to do right by Jimmy and this is how he's rewarded. Homie did NOT deserve that death which makes it all the more shocking.

One of the reasons Jimmy hates Howard is because Howard rectified his inner self and unburdened himself of the guilt of Chuck's death while Jimmy had refused to process those emotions. He hated Howard for not wallowing in self pity and depression anymore.

Howard was the better version of Jimmy, what he always wanted to be. Just as gifted with natural charisma, but choosing the path of using his "powers" for good while not getting dragged down by the problems that were thrown his way. He's the foil to slipping Jimmy.

Howard's death was so affecting because by this point in the series you come to realise he's the most moral main character in BCS. I think Jimmy misplaced a lot of anger towards Howard that was meant for Chuck. Because Chuck used Howard to be the fall guy in why Jimmy was not hired for HHM. He manipulated both Chuck and Howard. Steering Howard to make decisions, which Howard knew were not right but felt compelled to go with since he looked up to Chuck as a mentor (mirroring how Jimmy looked up to Chuck).By the time the truth came out, it was hard for Jimmy to see Howard as anything other than Chuck's accomplice, when in reality he had also been used by Chuck.

He did actually change a bit after Chuck's death. His feelings of guilt affected him and he had to deal with that. After seeking therapy he became a noticeably kinder and calmer person. He dealt with his grief, realized he wasn't truly at fault, and grew as a person. Basically the opposite of Jimmy, who never dealt with his grief or his guilt, and only became a worse person.

This death along with Hank's, was the most surprisingly and impactful to me. These are characters that seem like they have the "plot armor", or "main character armor", that you would believe they would never be killed. That is was makes it so impactful seeing these characters die. Especially Howard, since he was simply in the wrong place, at the wrong time. Breaking Bad had some of the most intense shocking scenes i’ve ever seen in any film/tv ever, Janes death, Walt running over the killers with his car, the crawl space, the child murder after the train heist, Hank finding out it was Walt all along, the Nazis showing up in the desert, Hanks death, so many scenes where i was literally shouting at the screen, after it ended i thought no other film or show will produce this feeling again where i’m completely on the edge of my seat like i’m actually there with the characters in those intense scenes, and then Better Call Saul came along. I don’t think i’ve ever in my entire life experienced the shock that was seeing Howard get shot in the head, by far the most shocking scene i’ve ever seen in any film or show. It really felt like witnessing a loved one being murdered in front of you, the entire day after i saw this episode i couldn’t get it out my head and how dark and unfair what happened was. It’s crazy that i used to like Lalo in a bad guy but he’s charming kind of way he was fun to watch but after this i never wanted a character to suffer so bad, what a truly evil human being. Completely unexpected and I felt so bad for Howard, he was not in the "Game" and did not deserve it at all. It truly shows the level of danger being in the "Game" brings, even if you are not in it, you never know how close it is to you. We got to see Howard's progression, getting somewhat attached to him, and just like that, in a blink he's done. He was a nobody to Lalo, just in the way of his goals. Wrong place wrong time. The sad part, think of how often things like this happen in real life to people around the world. This show is a masterpiece.

Howard was one of the most likable characters in Better Call Saul. His loyalty was towards his fellow partner Chuck and did what he wanted. You can't fault that. Howard possessed all the great qualities and ethics that Kim and Jimmy didn't have and yet was successful. They probably resented that and put a nail in his coffin because of it.
The writers although representative of what usually happens true to life where evil people succeed, showed him no mercy whatsoever.

This video is WONDERFULLY edited - moments like 9:24 seem to me like obvious things to do with a video that dives deep on a scene, but for whatever reason it's not common to see this kind of visual punctuation used to really explain & heighten the point that the speaker is making
That's just one great example, but this video is so full of great editing choices that I could make my own video exactly like this explaining why it does its job so perfectly (except nowhere as well as this one does haha)

Lalo and Howard represent two different worlds for Kim and Jimmy. The actions they both take against Howard are reviled but also safe within an acceptable world. But Lalo represents the no holds barred side of their personalities. Both worlds are attractive to Jimmy and Kim. They understand the consequences of both but they never accept the idea that the world of Lalo will come back to pay dividends. That is the beauty of Jimmy and Kim, we all hold those characters in ourselves and we all think we will make the 'right choice' but when we get caught up in our own pathology, it's hard to see the consequences of our actions. It's both real and beautiful in how this scene is played out
