build-up (script or no) flows very well,, points really resonate.
keep it up. you'll grow for sure.

I spent the first week with mine just playing with sound shaping. I'd hook my mic up and just capture shakers, my voice, ambient noise whatever. I have spent days just sending things through low/high pass filters and resampling over and over making sounds completely unrecognizable. I've given up on the idea of making music for now and just completely fallen in love with the process. I've played guitar and piano most of my life but this machine is - to me - way more fun and a completely new experience with music and sound that I've never experienced before. I literally just got it to lay down some beats and record musical sketches and I've been completely derailed.
It's my first piece of "DJ" gear, never really worked much with a DAW, either and it really blows my mind what all you can do even on the fly. I love the process but you nailed the negative of it, too. It's not the perfect machine, but it is great.
I really look forward to checking out more videos, man.

Can't wait to see another future vid pop up. It seems frustrating learning it at first but then once you get used to it the fun is how it makes you explore without even realizing it. You'll just be trying random things you never initially intended to that will even become favorite go to effects. Yo I’m right there with you man. My 404mk2 was my first stand alone sampler and it really felt nice disconnecting from the computer . I use Ableton and have a Push 2 as well as a Maschine but a total standalone sampler is next level and has really helped my production by being limited to that box . When ready to finalize the joint I’ll slap it into Ableton for mixing and mastering , etc

I just picked up this machine myself the other day, in my humble opinion this is a great piece of gear and there is a lot to learn about it. I'm a person just starting off making videos myself, but I have none at the moment making beats. I own the AKAI MPC One and a few other Sequencers and drum machines, but I really like this machine and as you said in your video there are people explaining how to use the 404MKI. I'm still a beginner at this machine, but love learning the functionality and the capabilities it offers. I also like the portability of having a machine to take anywhere to create different effects and best when the time should arise. Keep up making videos !

I started on fl studio 5 back in the days and ended up getting the sp 404 OG a couple years after. I continued to use fl studio most of the time because it was faster than using the OG SP. But after I got the mk2 I love it. You're right, it's a very different and unique workflow but I get good results. There are drawbacks to learning a sampler after using a DAW for so long but it's worth it. Enjoyed your video alot thank you man.

This was a great breakdown, brother. I just got my Mk2 a few weeks ago, and as an MPC One User the workflow intimidated me a bit initially - but coming from using the Koala app, I had some bearing. It’s a FUN and powerful machine, and kind of a rule-less, messy way of making music with a host of possibility - and that’s why it’s so beloved! Having a blast with it so far. That said, great breakdown and vid - can’t wait to follow along and see more from you. Thank you for sharing. Also, tracks are 🔥. Best to you, fam. Peace!

The dawless setup can be a slippery slope to try to obtain without it revolving back around to become just a new form of a daw minus the computer. It's not just a device for hip hop producers, but for people in bands, DJs use it for stems (one shots basically) You can also use it for electronic drums. You can also use it to record vocals if you don't have a daw around. And use it as a guitar fx pedal. It's a swiss army knife of music production as far as hardware goes. I wish they could allow you to change the screen settings, maybe different fonts or colors would be nice.

My monitors nearly crushed my ears because of that ventilator sound in your video !
Youre right the 404 community is great, each one teach one love it.
the most important part when you decice to go the 404 road is to give this device time and put effort in it, to learn the workflow, i came from a mpc background (rack mpc in the 90s and later 1k series) and im honest the first months i was close to send the device back because my mpc hardwired brain could not handle the workflow, but the suffering was worth it i wont look back now
why switch from the mpc to the 404? its simple the mpc (live) is just another daw, i tend to get lost in the infinite possibilies and my creativity suffers, with the 404 i get alot more output and its such a great tool, resampling efx monster!

I do not own the 404 myself but from what I've heard it's an awesome piece of gear as u have said. I hear what you're saying about the complexities of the device & the high learning curve. Due to its size and small screen it makes it even more difficult to learn. As a longtime owner of many different musical devices I would recommend you start off with the maschine MK3. It has a highly intuitive workflow the buttons and knobs are organized in a logical manner. It also includes a massive amount of beats included with the purchase. The frustration you mentioned with a higher learning curve I've experienced with other devices myself but you won't experience this with the maschine MK3. The big thing now is portability and all the big names are jumping in on it including NI with the standalone maschine. I would not suggest a beginner getting it because without the use of a computer screen it's more difficult to learn. Sometimes too many features are packed into a small device and trying to navigate the interface using a tiny screen such as the 404 will result in nothing but frustration which should not be the case when making music.

Every piece of hardware takes time to learn, but I do think that the mk2 just isn't a Centre piece. I'm dawless and use an SX & a mk2 in my setup. The mk2 has found its way to the end point of my setup, so I can dj with the music I produce, but its also at the start of the process too, I like to craft samples on it first, then import them to other devices.
I will say this about them tho... they're just damn fun to use.

In regards to the “daw in a box” claim, I think this is by far your best bet for a first one. You mention the MPC and yeah, it is a better example of a standalone device but it’s still only about 1.5x the daw for more than twice the price lol. Tbh personally I’d say this is definitely the most affordable option for most people who are just looking for something other than a daw.

My experience EXACTLY. Each piece of gear has its standout features and its crippling workflows. You have to WANT to master a piece of gear to get the most out of it. My biggest issue with almost ALL of these beatboxes/groove machines is the lack of simple track by track transfer to a DAW. That should be basic! It's like MS applications, (Excel, Word). They ALL do amazing things but no one person is a masters ALL functions in any one of them.

I suggest to give yourself a month or two to become a Jedi on this machine. Watch videos, read manuals. Then you will really get the most out of it. It was something I had to do when it was on back order. It helped a lot. Newer features are great like recording automation and mute performance is 🔥

I've never used the 404, but I did have a 303. Around 10 years ago, I bought an SP303 and an MPC 4K at the same time. The 4K is supposed to be a "deep" machine with a bit of a learning curve, so I expected the SP303 to be the easier machine to learn because I knew that it was a more advanced version of the Roland MS-1 which I had way back in the day. I thought I'd be using the SP most of the time and slowly getting a grip on the 4K. Exactly the opposite was the case. I had the 4K mastered in no time. It was turning into an extension of my mind while I made it do backflips and the 303 just ended up on the shelf collecting dust. Honestly, I found the 303 to be really difficult to get used to, just totally counter intuitive and required the manual to do anything. I ended up selling it. Maybe it's actually easy and I just didn't get it or spend enough time with it. Whatever lol. I still have the 4K to this day.

I just bought one, usually I use a DAW. Actually u write lyrics more than anything but sometimes do beats to fill the gaps on my album for a specific sound. So ima learn this, I’m tryna use it for fun and to make beats. Hope I can learn it easily. At first was gonna just cop a cheap sampler for fun but then just thought why not get this

You gotta look directly at the camera whenever you're speaking; Reading off the computer screen while the camera is showing the side of your face ruins the connection you're trying to establish with your viewers.
Other than that everything's good. Good luck on hitting 10K, I know you'll get there in no time.

I also have a love/hate relationship with this machine. I’ve always been DAWless but this was my first SP. It’s one of the most fun boxes I’ve owned and definitely leads to some unique outcomes that I would not have achieved elsewhere but it’s definitely not a good center piece for a DAWless setup. Elektron or AKAI devices are far more useful as centerpieces. I seem to outnumbered on this opinion but I find the effects to be mostly garbage. I find that it sounds lofi enough that I don’t need to use the lofi effects and for reverbs, delays and chorus’ I have pedals that are vastly superior. All that is fine for me though, what my absolute biggest gripe is that I cannot label my samples on the device when saving, it requires setting it up to a computer and that 100 percent negates the purpose of a standalone unit. Without being able to organize samples on the device itself I just resample them to my Elektron’s. This gives me more control and better sequencing options but it also uses up tracks that I’d just assume assign to the SP, and it also means the samples are baked however I had them in the SP so I’m losing that flexibility. That sloppiness to the workflow is very liberating and creative for me but it sucks when I’m trying to actually create a complete song.

This accurately catches some of my thoughts on it. I think it would be a great side piece instead of a main piece in a rig so right now I’m trying to use it more in conjunction with FL Studio

I have my SP404mk2 now for 2 month. Never used an SP before. I learned a lot with youtube and I am using it mostly like a standalone DAW replacement to create full tracks. Learning curve was ok for me, I used an MPC500 in the past and that thing was way more complicated imho. Unfortunately my MPC500 is broken, that‘s why I bought the SP. It does a good job so far but I am missing some features like sidechain compression/ducking and I am struggling with some stuff like motion recording of FX is out of sync. For live jams, I am mostly missing a feature to record from ext-in while playing a pattern. I want to be able to e.g. play a synth and record it like a live looper. However, I still feel I am only scratching the surface right now, there‘s a lot of potential in that box. I tend to GAS but my GF brought me back to earth a couple of weeks ago when I told her how Burial made his Untrue album. She asked me, if he was able to do it without a DAW, why do you need more devices? And that‘s totally true. The SP is a a beast. Not only for lofi hip hop fingerdrumming.

By far...MPC Live 2...is the most easiest to learn (the touch screen is GODsend). im on my mpc at least 1 hour a day. im slowly learning SP404 and Sonicware lofi. i just learned how to connect those machines to my mpc...to use the effects and sounds on my mpc. im saying all this to say...if you can...pickup one of the mpcs...get used to it first...and trickle down and learn the SP404 or other machines. or just flatout follow other youtubers to assist you with the SP404 learning.

I have to say alot of the stuff I see done on a sp-404mk11 just doesn't seem musical.
I am over 60 so I have always heard music that had rhythm, everything had a rhythm. Super slow music like "music for airports" and "no pussyfooting" from eno still had a rhythm. Prog rock had dudes who could change time signatures every 4 bars live without a click-track, but everyone was in time. Then hip-hop came along and everyone's songs were really heavy beats that had a rhythm. the drops were in time. The music was in time the spaces between the music had a rhythm.
I see lots of clips with MPC players and even if I think their music is boring it still has rhythm and a beat. But so many sp-404 clips are just random hits no melody no rhythm...and no beats. So the sp-404 mk11 seems to have so much tech in it but it doesnt make its users musical. I had a tb-303 and it was so easy to make random stuff but it still inspired people to make music.
So I got a sp-404mk11 and started looking at everything and noticed this statistic.

The SP404 Mk2 is a brilliant machine with great built in effects. It’s not for me personally but it’s a great device for those who get it. Not everything is for everybody. I prefer working with MPCs.
Music creation itself has a lot of complexities. Sit someone who has no musical experience in front of a piano. It will be some time before they can create something worth hearing. Anything worth learning takes time.
