Well, being French, I can tell you some people drink wine every day, if not every meal (instead of water of course...) I don't know about other countries, but when my grand mother was raised, as a kid, she never drank water 😁

An American here. I think you're right. During the cold war years Russians were our go-to villains in movies and TV shows and since we export so many movies everybody has seen Russians as spies or Russian super villains with underground bases.
In America we are obsessed with espionage. James Bond, the real-life misadventures of the CIA, Benghazi, all types of spy tales. The Russophobia of the cold war is being passed down to the younger generations by video games like Call of Duty, where the antagonist is ALWAYS someone from a CIS country. Sad to say, the stereotypes are often true: most Americans are ignorant about geopolitics & believe only what the NATO-aligned news media tells them.
Been there, found the people really inviting, providing you try to communicate in Russian, even if it is basic or incorrect, the effort is appreciated, and be polite.

We miss living in nature and want very badly to leave Hong Kong sometime after our 4th child is born later this year. We're very, very discouraged to see what's happening with society in North America. It's very sad to see the high crime rates and moral/ethical/political degradation. We feel that Russia may be a better fit for our family with our conservative views on family values. My eldest daughter and I have just started to learn to read, write & speak Russian with the goal of going to see if it's for us. Again, thanks!

Unfortunately, that goes both ways with the media/propaganda aspect. Ironically, (or, perhaps, unironically), actual common citizens from both countries tend to like and respect each other. It's just the folks that believe the media as if it's truth - but that's a general problem with mass media. It's not specific to this particular situation. You'd probably find it challenging to find a country without biased media - and that is a shame, to be honest.
Ironically, in US metropolitan areas I live in or have visited (San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Seattle, New York), vodka has been extremely popular among people of many age ranges - young, middle aged, and old - for the last 20 years or more. From cheap brands that come in plastic bottles like "Popov" to classy ones in fancy glass bottles like "Grey Goose" and "Belvedere"

Judy - You wrote that really well! A little mistake with the name Fyodor, which is spelled “Фёдор”. I studied Russian in college, and I forget how to spell things all the time. When I’m not sure, I often go to Wikipedia and look up someone with the same name, and it will show me the correct spelling. For Fyodor, I looked up Fyodor Dostoyevsky, and here is the name in Russian: Фёдор Михайлович Достоевский. You may already know this, but the “Михайлович” part of his name is called a patronymic, which is based on his father’s name (which is Михайл in his case).
Very funny about the bears! When we moved to Florida I had no idea there were bears, but we have them walking through our yard several times a year. We saw one today! I've seen more bears than alligators!
As an American I have never once heard the stereotype that bears walk the streets of Russia. Instead I have heard the stereotype that Russians are strong enough or give no rats but enough to actually fight Bears themselves or take them for their own personal labor uses

Agreed, I've met French people here in Brazil and they confirmed that. You'll never know how it is unless you go to the country or someone from there with an active "night life" tells you how it is. Brazil for instance, most people never comment on it, here people either don't drink at all, or drink like CRAZY. Me and a few mates from here have put plenty of aussies, irish and brits to shame on drinking, people just don't think about it when picturing Brazil, they only think beaches and soft cocktails. While in truth we drink a f*ton of beer and hard liquor even during summer.
You know the tap technology we finally have rolling out in the states for credit and debit cards? Russia has been widely using that for the last..at least 15 years I think (it's probably been more) Also, the bank apps there are ridiculously convenient - you can pay pretty much anything you can think of or anyone.. Never been a need for apps like venmo - you just pay a person using their phone number via the bank app or you can just text your bank app with their number and amount and money goes directly into their account.
People don't always trust new technologies. In Russia, people are a little conservative, because they have the experience of the 90s, when we were deceived even from TV screens, attracting foreign film stars who did not even know that they were being used in fraud. Therefore, adults do not really trust everything new.

The guy who was filling the car came out and asked how much gas he wanted, since that's not the same guy that's confirming the transaction inside. @5:40: I'd say that people associate Russians with drinking vodka frequently because many believe that it was invented there. I guess the jury is still deciding if it was Russia or Poland but you get the point. France, for example, has a lot of wine - but you don't associate them with wine because it existed well before France did. Granted, it's obviously an untrue stereotype, in many cases, but I think this is a pretty reasonable explanation.

As an American, I'll say that if people were asking you if you were a spy, they were probably joking. It's an overused trope from Cold War-era fiction, we like to laugh about it. Our humor can be a bit insensitive and clichéd at times (what's the difference between making fun of a cliché and just using it?), but if somebody actually thought you were a spy, it wouldn't make any sense to tell you.
I am not sure what to say. I was in Russia and I had vodka. Younger people tend to drink more beer these days, but I think vodka still has a presence. The vodka in Russia also somehow just tastes better imo.

In St. Petersburg, a bunch of cultural programs, hanging around museums with a girl is not necessary, two weeks will not be enough. It’s a little difficult to believe (too well sponsored) that this is the stereotype of a typical Russian wilderness guy, but if some Russians come close, it is a compliment to them.
This stereotypes are really funny, but that's truth, that Russia has a bad reputation in many countries. Not just because of american films, but because of history as well. For example, in Hungary almost every family keep dreadfully terrible stories from that time, when russian soldiers were here. So people maybe believe bad stereotypes easily, although russians left our country more than thirty years ago, and Russia has changed a lot (and of course, communism had more russian victims than hungarian)
Some of these made me laugh. To be fair I've seen a lot of videos where babuskas are always pushing their vodka onto people I guess that's why I personally thought Russians love vodka. Love this series can't wait for the next one I definitely want to visit Russia one day.
I just read some data that only 32% of Russian families has bought vodka at least once in the last 6 months. Not that much I believe. I think #1 is пиво, number 2 is вино, number 3 is водка
My mom likes vodka as her main alcohol of choice. My Russian friends that are around my age don't. They mostly drink beer and then for special occasions I think it's whiskey and cola that's a common drink

Great video, but I got to stop you on the Russian military or rather the Russian Federation’s military, because they ARE big and have a lot of resources and assets, but they’re under funded, under developed, under equipped, outdated and over politicized. Let me explain; first the population is not interested in serving, they also don’t have much say as to where federal money is spent. Second, the soviet union’s reign held back infrastructure and created many enemies and few allies. The reason they’re on the global stage is due to have nuclear weapons. Meanwhile the nato countries are creating alliances and sharing technologies. Let’s take Swedens military for example. Similar long history to that of Russia, but a lot less active personal. Even for being a conscription state. However every soldier has the best of the best of modern equipment, including updates to armor and aircraft. Sweden also must prepare for a Russian invasion, not to mention the backbone of their allies namely the United states and its massive naval fleet and budget. The Russian military has its might in propaganda and historical events. The Russian landscape is that of legends even beating the likes of nepolian, hitler, and even the Swedish empire in the past, notably when the Russian military was at a severe disadvantage. I don’t personally think that leadership is to blame. The soviet government set the country back very far, and sacrificed a lot of soldiers that would still be of age to serve today. They’re on track to be a formidable force, but they’re statistically in a bad position. But again, the Russian fighting spirit and determination is like no other and for that I offer respect

Disassembly rate of 13 seconds is excellent and 17 seconds is satisfactory. Thus, disassemble and assemble the Kalashnikov assault rifle perfectly for 36 seconds. Assemble and disassemble for a satisfactory 47 seconds. Shop equipment for 30 rounds of 30-40 seconds (excellent - satisfactory, respectively). Children of preschool age are not given a Kalashnikov assault rifle, there are some springs and mechanisms that are very rigid, they will not have enough strength. We are taught to assemble and disassemble at school.

@@georgepoolver4508 that is exaggeration. Yes, homophobic propaganda in Russia is horrible, and there are Nazi anti gay laws in place. At the same time, acceptance of LGBT in the society is on the rise, especially among younger people. Majority of LGBT are open to their families about who they are and generally there are no issues with that.
I've heard that that is pretty bad but yeah would be nice to hear from gay people from there to know their perspective on whether they feel safe or able to be open with their partners or be able to outwardly express themselves in a different way from the norm. In the US it's not great in a lot of places. Some places you can feel safe but in a lot of places you can't, and I get the impression it's even worse in Russia from what i've heard.
@@antidote234 It seems more like they have to live in anonymity, but it's not unreasonable for folks to express themselves as others do without trouble. It doesn't do any harm to allow them. Just being personally uncomfortable with something others are doing which doesn't negatively impact others doesn't count as harm or a reason to disallow something.
On the subject of vodka, if you go into a Russian supermarket you will find a very large selection of various varieties.... so someone is drinking vodka in Russia. Are Russians alcoholics? I know where I have lived the sale of alcohol has been banned between 23.00 and 07.00. On certain days the sale is completely banned. Also statistics can be manipulated, if like for like comparisons aren't made. Mafia? May be still in Yekaterinburg. The ability to pay for items by phone is not something new or exclusive to Russia. The spy thing works both ways, I've been asked am I a spy when I was in Russia.
I've seen videos of Russian supermarkets and you'll find very similar sights in supermarkets in the US in states which allow alcohol in supermarkets, which is most states.
I have never heard of these bear stories you and other Russians speak of . Not till I started watching Russian videos .I think this is a made up Russian myth .

Never been a need for apps like venmo - you just pay a person using their phone number via the bank app or you can just text your bank app with their number and amount and money goes directly into their account.

People don't always trust new technologies. @5:40: I'd say that people associate Russians with drinking vodka frequently because many believe that it was invented there. I guess the jury is still deciding if it was Russia or Poland but you get the point. France, for example, has a lot of wine - but you don't associate them with wine because it existed well before France did. Granted, it's obviously an untrue stereotype, in many cases, but I think this is a pretty reasonable explanation.

As an American, I'll say that if people were asking you if you were a spy, they were probably joking. It's an overused trope from Cold War-era fiction, we like to laugh about it. Our humor can be a bit insensitive and clichéd at times (what's the difference between making fun of a cliché and just using it?), but if somebody actually thought you were a spy, it wouldn't make any sense to tell you.
I am not sure what to say. I was in Russia and I had vodka. Younger people tend to drink more beer these days, but I think vodka still has a presence. The vodka in Russia also somehow just tastes better imo.

This stereotypes are really funny, but that's truth, that Russia has a bad reputation in many countries. Not just because of american films, but because of history as well. For example, in Hungary almost every family keep dreadfully terrible stories from that time, when russian soldiers were here. So people maybe believe bad stereotypes easily, although russians left our country more than thirty years ago, and Russia has changed a lot (and of course, communism had more russian victims than hungarian)

Great video, but I got to stop you on the Russian military or rather the Russian Federation’s military, because they ARE big and have a lot of resources and assets, but they’re under funded, under developed, under equipped, outdated and over politicized. Let me explain; first the population is not interested in serving, they also don’t have much say as to where federal money is spent. Second, the soviet union’s reign held back infrastructure and created many enemies and few allies. The reason they’re on the global stage is due to have nuclear weapons. Meanwhile the nato countries are creating alliances and sharing technologies. Let’s take Swedens military for example. Similar long history to that of Russia, but a lot less active personal. Even for being a conscription state. However every soldier has the best of the best of modern equipment, including updates to armor and aircraft. Sweden also must prepare for a Russian invasion, not to mention the backbone of their allies namely the United states and its massive naval fleet and budget. The Russian military has its might in propaganda and historical events. The Russian landscape is that of legends even beating the likes of nepolian, hitler, and even the Swedish empire in the past, notably when the Russian military was at a severe disadvantage. I don’t personally think that leadership is to blame. The soviet government set the country back very far, and sacrificed a lot of soldiers that would still be of age to serve today. They’re on track to be a formidable force, but they’re statistically in a bad position. But again, the Russian fighting spirit and determination is like no other and for that I offer respect

In the US it's not great in a lot of places. Some places you can feel safe but in a lot of places you can't, and I get the impression it's even worse in Russia from what i've heard.
