Just a small note: If you keep on swimming regularly ( let's say at least 3-4 times a week ), your breathing will optimize itself naturally. Without realizing you'll start exhaling just before putting your head above the surface and you will only exhale as much as necessary. No worries if things don't work out directly.
Yeah. Another small note. If you do anything you're not used to for like a hundred hours, that thing is going to feel a lot more natural than it did before that effort ;) I've been struggeling with this and more of the basics for just 3 weeks, 2-3 times a week and man is it hard. Even if I got the first two exercises down, I sink like a rock if I rotate to the side and lift one arm out of the water.

OMG! I've been struggling to breathe in freestyle for the last few days, watched tons of videos but nothing helped. Until I found this one. Your suggestion of breathing out just as you turn your head was all I needed. Finally I got the breath right! Thank you.
Started swimming lessons again. I was told to exhale all the time while looking down but the advice to just exhale as you turn your head for a breath makes sense to me. Exhaling all the time leaves my breathing out of sync. I'll try this. Thanks
WOW, I have been watching a lot of swimming videos and see everybody has own techniques. Most people say start exhaling as soon as your head goes under water and keep it until you inhale again so that you don't accumulate CO2 in your lungs. What Skill NT says is totally opposite, but I am willing to try it. I guess the key is to figure it out with lots and lots of practice.
well you can gauge an estimate? just thinking on my feet here, if you get a long balloon used for making balloon animals etc, you could get a pretty good idea how big it gets from a full lung exhalation, then half of that is near enough 50% lung capacity, half *that* is 25 and so that's a decent guide. or, in a slow, controlled full breath in and out, time it several times until each breath in or out is taking just about the same time from empty to full or vice versa (lets say 5 secs), and then divide that time into tenths or whatever, and there you can count each 10%, and get a feel for what 10% or 20% or 50% etc really feels like. so if you can time from empty lungs to full lungs as 5 seconds of smooth flow, each second is another 20% lung capacity. then if you try to just limit it to lose that final 30% that way, you'll know how it feels in your body to withhold the final 30% or so (although when practising this kinda stuff be careful to have breaks with full breathing so you don't get dizzy!)

siraj mohiuddin hey! So I actually ended up becoming a lifeguard/swim instructor and since my stroke was weak, everyday since I worked at the pool I would get in and practice swimming my freestyle and my technique only became better and better. Some things I would do is use a kick board and put some fins on my feet to strengthen my kick because that is what propels you through the water. Then I would use a bouie that goes between your legs and I would slowly swim only using my arms focusing on keeping my elbows high and my arms in a “11” position (which means not crossing over your shoulders) while focusing on breathing every third stroke. Using paddles help tremendously with this drill as you can move slower and really focus on what your arms are doing. If you do struggle with breathing every 3rd stroke you can breath on the second stroke and slowly progress. Once you start getting all the parts in motion and you are comfortable I would swim with, for example, a hoodie and sweatpants on to cause drag, this will help you get stronger and faster with your front crawl stroke!

What I never get is I see this swimming videos and these people taking a breath and then they go back in the water with their mouth open in less than a second. How are you breathing that fast without choking on water?
With swimmers that are good at freestyle, their stroke creates a little dip in the surface of the water by the face. When they turn to breathe there is a bit more space there. It’s not much but since their breath is very quick, it works. Still working on that myself lol!

It's my theory...
This breathing skill is effective for pool swimming or short distance swimming...
The other breathing skill that you mentioned is good for long distance or open water swimming.
In pool environment, there's less surface drag...
When swimming short distance, you have enough stamina....
But in open-water, there's so much surface drag caused by wave and choppy water.
When you swim long distance, you need to be energy-efficient.
So it would be disadvantageous when you get higher in the water.
Since when is a higher body position of disadvantage when swimming?
Is it normal when you do the first exercise, I can only inhale back around 5 times before my chest starts to hurt (like wanting to breath normally)? Or does by practice I should be able to do the exercise for a longer period of time?

좋은 정보 감사합니다.밴드로 퍼가겠습니다.
It looks like you take in a little water when you open your mouth to exhale. Is that okay? I usually like bring out my head out enough to exhale.
it is a good excercise , just do it with good kicking ...the more you kick ,more you float on water and will have enough time to breathe...
감사합니다!^^ thank you
I have a sprint and a relay on 12 and 13 of August but I cannot do faster and I am getting breathing problem can u please.tell me
I am here a bit late like six years, do you still have any swimming caps left?
Hi. I was stuck at the breathing step for a very long time. Exercises in Your video really helped me.. Especially the 1st and 2nd one. Thanks and keep up the good work
When you say a long time, how long?
Today I did my first freestyle but the problem is when I try to breath, i drowned & then I had to stop, I am going to try that same tectonics hopefully it works.....love you
Water goes in my mouth everytime I go up to breathe? How can I fix this
The reason I even Googled for this video. Still not clear
Exhale through mouth and nose as your head turns out of the water, then inhale when your head is clear of water then turn back down
Defiantly applying to my swimming
Very useful thx
Good video!
tq.... brother 😎
