Suomenlinna , also Viapori, is a sea fortress located in front of Helsinki and a district of about 700 inhabitants . As a historical monument and attraction, its cultural value is significant, and it is a strong part of Helsinki's identity. The construction of Suomenlinna started in 1748, and until 1918 it was officially known in Finnish as Viapori, based on its Swedish name Sveaborg , and in some contexts the name Viapori still appears today. Suomenlinna was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991 .
