Faster than a car: Zoopa electric scooter

- Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland - they all have one thing in common: agonisingly slow traffic, but Gav might have just found the ultimate 'cheat codes'. It's a funky little scooter from Zoopa and as he quickly discovered, in city traffic this electric machine is faster than an ebike or a car. Heck, it's even faster than the bus!
And seeing as Gav's a certified tight-wad, the best part is the cost. Brand new, a Zoopa scooter is $5499. That's less than a high-end ebike, yet the Zoopa costs only $168 a year in registration. Plus, there's no Warrant of Fitness to worry about, and a typical ride into the city costs about 15 cents.
Forget the financial incentives though, because absolutely best of all it is FUN! But don't take our word for it, press Play and take a look at the goofy grin on Gav's face.

Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it's not! Ecotricity is real, with really affordable electricity, thanks to it being purely renewable.

The Zoopa. It's remarkably navigatable!
A good rain suit and you can ride in most weather.
Gav you're now world famous in NZ haha.
An oxymoron...?
Brilliant video/review. Interesting to learn that moped licences are still a thing 😂 they use to be here in the UK, but that got removed quite a long time ago. Anyway, yes, electric scooters...brilliant things, and definitely something that needs to be encouraged as a clean, cheap/affordable alternative to local/metropolitan public transport.
It was great to see you being recognised too 😊 by both car drivers and cyclists; what a lovely bunch Aucklanders are 😊
Now we are talking. Thanks Gavin...good to know.
Great video. Loved seeing the fans in the video. All scooters should be electric. No need for Dino death ash. Cool seeing all the evs on the road.
Brilliant review. I imagine a lot of people might skip this video because it is about a scooter, but they will miss out on a very good option. If I was more physically able I would definitely look at getting one, especially when it is about the same price as a half decent E-bike.
I own a Zoopa Nova and love it in Wellington 😂
Great video. Looks so much fun. You looked like a kid in a candy store 😂
Very interesting! Yet another excellent video!
Brilliant video as always. You looked like you had a lot of fun doing this one.
Yes a 50cc equivalent e scooter is all you need, unless you need to keep up with 100km traffic on the northern or southern motorways. I have a NIU EVO GT (125cc) electric scooter (6.5kw motor) 80km range and 114km speed. I feel very safe on this as I can keep up with traffic, and have power to overtake. But you need a bike license and rego is expensive.
Great video, Gavin! I've been wanting a Vespa Elettrica but they are nearly double the price of this one.
But how do the ute-bros phallically compensate on an electric moped?
Let’s face it. Nobody phallicly compensates on any kind of scooter!😂
@@PeterLucasathome compensating can go both ways
That was my exact commute for years. Onehunga to the CBD. On a motorbike though.
With the rain I thought it would be bad too, but you'd be very surprised how few times you get properly rained on, 5 times a year maybe? $20 pvc rain pants and a jacket you're 100% sorted
When we go for drives in our Atto 3 near Mandurah Western Australia ($5 off peak charge for 350-450km) we count EVs compared to Soul Red Mazdas. EVs have slowly overtaken Soul Red in the last year.
On your 15min journey Gavin, I counted 9 to 1 (rough count). NZ is definitely ahead of Western Australia in EV adoption. Well done NZ.
In my country (Belgium) your car license - if obtained before 2004 or thereabouts - is the ticket to a 125 cc/15 kW motorcycle. And the good thing is: they look at nominal power. So we can get a Zero S motorcycle with 60 hp peak power but a nominal power rating of 15 kW and drive it through traffic.
The only thing stopping me from getting one is... my spouse. A hurdle I'll never be able to tackle, I'm afraid ;)
Looks awesome! Would be great around Melbourne too! Can't seem to find them in Australia as yet, so fingers crossed...
Really nice video. Thanks
Gavin, i'd love to see you test a Taiwanese Gogoro electric scooter, they have been around for ages and feature battery swapping if needed.
anytime manufacturer puts "I'm electric" sticker, they should give you 50% off - I'd rip that off straight away
I'm pretty sure that here, mopeds have to have pedals as well. MO for motor, PED for pedals. I've seen some that people have taken the pedals off, but it changes the classification as far as the law goes.
In the old days, now it's a motorcycle under 50cc or EV less than 3kw, max speed 50kph. Only car license needed.
I always thought that a moped had Pedals! That's what the '...ped' part of the name means, or meant. Kiwi classification.
It needs to have more range than 60 km
Walking is faster than a car in Auckland.
I don't know what scooters you have ridden , but obviously nothing above 100cc because most 125cc scooters will leave any car and many motorcycles at the lights.
I had to keep a 1250cc Suzuki Bandit in lower gears than I normally would have to keep up with a Yamaha T-Max scooter (500cc) on a motorway on ramp.
Scooters' acceleration benefits enormously from their CVT transmissions.
No gloves, Gav that is NOT good. Helmet and gloves are the absolute minimum on mopeds and motorbikes. Most important question, can it wheelie?????
Hey! What about the PSC?!? 😅
Spud storage capacity?
Wear decent wet weather gear and arrive at work dry . On a pedal assisted bike you'll probably be drenched in sweat
It has regen braking!
you need some eye protection. even at local road speeds, getting a bug or stone in the eye is pretty dangerous.
Are you sure they are faster than an e bike? i saw 2 pass you in the video ha ha ha
The downside is breathing in the fumes from all the petrol/diesel vehicles. For that reason, you are arguably still better off in an EV car (also a lot safer from being squished like a tomato). Also much more pleasant being in an EV car when the weather is raining/windy/cold and scooters can't carry passengers or anything more than a shopping bag's worth of cargo.
Not wearing gloves on ANY kind of bike is a real shocker to see. It only takes a low level spill to rip one’s hand to pieces - gravel rash anyone??
Statistically hands are the 1st impact on any given accident…
I know that only too well from early bicycle racing days.
@@bungee7503 Absolutely my friend. I’ve ’gone down the road’ so many times on either motorcycles, bicycles or even a simple trip and the your hands are always the first to cop it.
If I had one choice of apparel on two wheels it’d be gloves and a smile…🧤🧤
I’d be wearing gloves if I was you
I love your work Gav. But my grumpy side says.... please wear some decent gear (gloves, jacket at least), don't park on the footpath, don't ride in the green cycle lane/box (broadway/khyber pass Rd intersection) thanks.
Oh and lane splitting is ok. Cops will only stop you if you are being a dick doing it. Passing on the left is illegal unless you're on a bicycle. These e scooters are great until the battery dies prematurely. I've seen them go after a couple of years. Then it's uneconomical to replace them. A decent bicycle and some fitness is the way to go in AKL if you commute is under 20kms
And perhaps glasses.
A stupid title. It should say "quicker" not "faster".
