  • Watch this new sermon from Pastor Jeff Durbin on the Olivet Discourse and the Great Tribulation. What does the Bible teach about the "end times"? What is the Great Tribulation about? Who did Jesus say would witness and experience the Great Tribulation? Did it occur when Jesus said it would? Find out here in Jeff Durbin's series on the Great Tribulation. The verse is Matthew 24:23-28.

    I might be misunderstanding, but I've tried watching this series of videos and have found them very troubling. I have been seeking for a stronger understanding of eschatology and have found nothing but confusion. I know the Lord calls his people to be faithful and endure to the end, while working heartedly to give Him glory and spread His name. I just can't help but think that your position on eschatology affects this tremendously, or at least gives you a brighter outlook on the Kingdom of God, which is what we all should have.BUT I almost think that your viewpoint on eschatology is pretty close to FULL preterism, which is outside of orthodoxy completely and has some significant implications on the rest of our beliefs. I really enjoy your ministry and the passion for Jesus' name you have, but I am hoping to at the very least gain clarity on your eschatological position, and if you actually believe Jesus will return one day. Much love brother.

      Check Moriel - Jacob Prasch or Mark Hitchcock or Chuck Missler or John MacArthur for solid teachings on eschatology. I really enjoy Jeff's work to save the unborn, and how he preaches to mormons and JW to approach them in loving truth. But his position on eschatology really is pounding the proverbial round peg in a square hole. Read Revelation and Daniel and Zechariah, has there been a literal fulfillment of the seal, trumpte and bowl judgments yet? Obviously not. His hermeneutics seemed largely reactionary from his prior unhealthy obession with eschatology. Swinging from opposite pendulum ends is equally erroneous. Just be a berean and search out the scriptures for your self. The Spirit of Truth will open your eyes is you are saved.

They get it from Corinthians where Paul said - whether there be tongues or prophecys it shall pass away. It seems as if the whole interpretation hinges on Matt 24:33-34 "33 So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 34 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place." I just want to point out that v34 is directed at those who "see all these things." I think Jesus was referring to the generation that will "see all these things" and not necessarily the audience. Can someone explain why that wouldn't be a valid interpretation? It seems like an unwarranted presupposition to assume that Jesus was only talking about the people listening to Him at the time.

    • @Chico60Colt
      @Chico60Colt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      When He says "When you see all these things" who is He telling this to? He is talking directly to his disciples they are the ones that had asked Him when the temple was going to be destroyed. The disciples expected this to happen sometime in their lifetime not something to take place over 2000 years later. So I don't see how you get that He is talking to the generation that see these signs. You would have to twist the scripture to get that interpretation. We need to remember when Jesus says this He is talking to his disciples not to me or you.

    • @banjoninja
      @banjoninja 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Chico60Colt Did that generation see "the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory"? Or is that just hyperbolic language? You've got some real problems with your interpretation that should make you go back and question some of your presuppositions. You asserting that Jesus is only talking to his immediate audience and not a future generation doesn't answer my question about why my interpretation isn't valid. I'm asking for a reason it's not valid. For example, I would assert that Jesus isn't only talking to that generation because they never saw "they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory." That's a reason to question your interpretation.
      Respectfully, I would also assert that are many other places in the bible that you wouldn't use that hermeneutic to interpret scripture. Later in Matthew 24:45-46 "45 Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? 46 Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes." Since you're saying Jesus words only apply to his audience, does this verse apply to me? Will I be blessed if Jesus finds me in obedient service when he comes? If you're going to be consistent in your hermeneutic that you would say "no, it doesn't apply to you since you aren't a member of that generation that heard these words." However, I don't think that you would say that. The fact that you can't interpret these passages in the Olivet Discourse with the same hermeneutic should tell you that you have a problem with your interpretation.

    • @Chico60Colt
      @Chico60Colt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@banjoninja Im going to argue yes they did see Him coming on the clouds there were many signs before and during the siege of Jerusalem. For instance there were many recording of soldiers and chariots running from cloud to cloud in the sky before the siege. Many people in the city knew these signs meant judgment was coming on Jerusalem but the Jewish leaders changed these signs and said no these are signs God is with us and we will be victorious.
      I would agree with your argument if Jesus had said the generation that sees all these signs will not pass away but He doesn't. There is no where in Matthew when Jesus is talking about a generation is he talking about a future generation every time He is talking to the generation that was there. Your trying to change what He is saying to fit a presupposition where anyone who was just reading the text without any knowledge of either side would say He is talking about that generation.
      Actually in Matthew 24:45-46 I would still say He is not talking to you. The wicked servants He is talking about are the Jewish leaders who were supposed to be taking care of His house but didn't this is why He came in judgment on them in 70 AD.In His conversation with the disciples your not there they are. Are there truths we can take from what He says to His disciples yes of course but you cannot say this is written for me even when Matthew was written it was written for a Jewish audience. You have to keep that in mind when ever we interpret scripture.

    • @banjoninja
      @banjoninja 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Chico60Colt Did Jesus come and then leave again? It doesn't say anything about soldiers and chariots in the bible, its says "the Son of Man" with power and great glory. Its says "all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see." Did all the tribes of the earth mourn when they saw this or are we just talking about the people where the siege was located. The bible plainly indicates a world-wide event. I really think you're stretching credulity to credit these accounts of soldiers in the clouds with what scripture is describing here. It just doesn't fit. It's a prime example of making the scripture fit a doctrinal presupposition. You have a doctrine and now you must make the scripture fit it with secular accounts of people seeing soldiers in clouds. That approach is really the same approach as people looking at headlines today and trying to fit a pre-tribulation rapture into current events. The only difference is that you are looking back. I once again want to point out that you vary your interpretation to fit what you presuppose. When Jesus speaks of "this generation", you take a supraliteral approach but when He mentions His coming with world-wide mourning, power, and great glory you then take a figurative approach. I'm not saying I have all the answers but I don't find your position and many others very convincing. I've come to be mostly pre-wrath in my eschatology, which I know is a minority view. I'm just trying to understand the other views at this point. At the end of the day, I'm going to trust Christ with my future; however it plays out according to His sovereign will.

      @banjoninja 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Chico60Colt Be careful of your approach to scripture, the Word of God was written to believers. I realize that Jesus spoke these words to a Jewish audience but it's a very slippery slope to say "Matthew wasn't written to me." Jesus can speak these words to a Jewish audience 2000 years ago and speak them to us today when we read them. People have gotten into a lot of heresy by segmenting the Word of God by audience and saying that part of scripture is not for me because it was written to Jews. Was the Sermon on the Mount written only to Jews? I thought there was no difference now between Jew and Gentile because we are all one in Christ. I have seen people fall into some real false teaching by taking that approach too far.

      Liquid Cryo That’s a great point to note. As I challenged myself to study “dual fulfillment” I found that it is quite a slippery slope. How do we determine which prophecies have two (or more!) fulfillments? Is there another Messiah coming? Is there a second Second Coming? My conclusion is that Scripture is specific as to fulfillment of a prophecy in a single context, always. I can’t name a single prophecy that has multiple fulfillments. Brian Godawa has a great chapter in one of his books explaining the problems of multiple fulfillment theory, and many other theologians of previous centuries likewise reject the premise. I encourage you to examine both sides of the argument and come to your own conclusion. Peace!

      Christ IS coming back. ALL authority on Heaven and Earth is his RIGHT NOW as he says in his ascension.
      The secret rapture "Left Behind" version of the end of the world is modern fiction. It's a tradition only about 200 years old.
      Christ will return to a conquered earth like 1 Corinthians 15:25 says.
      We've got a LONG way to go but you should be thinking long term, just like the early church and most of church history did.

    Pastor Durbin, I love what you do when it comes to witnessing to the lost! You provide an excellent example for other believers. However, this is not true. We are in the end times!!! All you have to do is look at end times events through the nation of Israel. In addition to the 8/21/2017 total solar eclipse. That is a sign of God’s impending judgement on this nation. In addition to the evil that is on the rise in this nation. Corruption at the highest levels in our government, our national debt and and the rise of sexual freedom. Which is a characteristic of end time events. I love you Pastor and I pray that God would open more clearly your spiritual discernment into things of this present age. God has blessed you with a wonderful platform. It’s time to wake up Christians not keep them sleep by this interpretation of the scriptures. May God bless you brother!

      Its interesting you disagree with what he says but instead of arguing from the scriptures which is what we use as our authority for what is true. You argue on what you see around you and what you think are signs that the world is ending and we are in the end times. Maybe we should look more at what the scripture actually says then all the events that we think are signs that the end is near.

      Every generation since Jesus left earth has believed that we are in the End Times. They were all wrong. Eventually someone will get it right.
      We are at least 1-2 generations away and quite possibly 100 or more years.
      Jerusalem is Babylon - Babylon killed the PROPHETS, SAINTS & Jesus Christ. Carefully read these scriptures from the KJV.
      Revelation 18:24
      18 And in her (Babylon) was found the blood of PROPHETS, and of SAINTS, and of all that were slain upon the earth.
      Revelation 17:5-6
      5 And upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, BABYLON The Great, The Mother Of Harlots And Abominations Of The Earth.
      6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the SAINTS, and with the blood of the MARTYRS of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.
      Matthew 23:34-37
      34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you PROPHETS, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye SHALL KILL and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
      35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous ABEL unto the blood of Zachariah (A to Z from the first person killed to the last in the OT) son of Barachias, whom YE SLEW between the temple and the altar.
      36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
      37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that KILLEST the PROPHETS, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
      1 Thessalonians 2:14-16
      14 For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have OF THE JEWS:
      15 Who BOTH KILLED the Lord Jesus, and THEIR OWN PROPHETS, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary (against) to all men:
      16 Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the WRATH is come upon them to the UTTERMOST.
      Luke 13:34-35
      34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!
      35 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

      Matthew 24:4 So that’s interesting!! Did you know in the Old Testament the idea of something happening very soon goes back to the Old Testament. You should research the Day of the Lord!! Simply meaning that God has been receiving the end of the world way before Jesus came on the scene!! Which makes sense because if God views a day as a thousand years and a thousand years a day then simply going back 6000yrs wouldn’t even be a week in Gods time!! I appreciate your knowledge of the scripture and all though I agree with your verses. To argue Durbins position you would have to through out other texts. Which is why it’s not accurate! In addition your response reminds me of 1 Thessalonians 5:1-4!

    Wait, I'm so confused.... what you're saying is that of Mathew 24 was not Jesus speaking about the distance future regarding His second coming then He said nothing at ALL about His coming?... that is the only time in the records of His time on earth in which He speaks of coming again in the future?.. prompted by the question from His disciples "what will be the sign of your coming?"...... He didn't come in that generation!?.. don't you need to do some mental gymnastics to make that fit?.
    You keep saying "LET THE TEXT TALK!" well, let's let it talk then?... he is asked what the signs are of His coming, if you have to get around this then obviously you're not letting the text talk? You can't pick and choose when something is stated as it appears and then when something doesn't fit you force very convoluted interpretations to it?
    None of this makes sense. I don't think it makes sense the other way around either because you're right that He said ALL these things will happen before that generation passes.
    So the way I see it, we have a few options...
    1. Jesus said absolutely nothing about His second coming at all during His life..
    2. He was asked a question and He didn't answer it but instead told them what would happen in the coming years, rather than what the signs of His coming are, or..
    3. This is contradicting because it's not true and the bible is fiction.
    Like I said, makes no sense at all. None of it, from any angle.

      You're right, preterism is confusing. It's not Biblical. "This generation" means the generation that sees ALL the signs will not pass until all those things are accomplished. The meaning is that the Tribulation will be confined to a short enough period (7 years) so that the generation that sees the beginning will see the end. Behold, He is coming quickly.

      Trey we have almost your exact situation can relate very much.
      We used to drive 130 mi every 2nd Sunday to a strong Reformed church. Great times & fellowship but wore us out.
      By Gods grace a local SBC church here was either closing down (large bldg, Cong # dwindled from 800 to >100) - due to large variety of factors INCLUDING the SBCs double mindedness (long story).
      1 or 2 of the Elders had noticed the Optimism inherent in a Reformed Postmillenial perspective & they called for & found a great candidate - PTL we now have a growing church once again. It's hard but rewarding work serious Reformation is done on our knees seeking Jesus humbly & being willing to reexamine all our false or questionable premises.
      I would advise you search around I'm pretty his situation is not unique.
      Meantime meeting as a family/house church is not unacceptable - it may be your season for it.
      Pray for the LORD to link y'all with Reform minded believers & study together.
      I think it was John Calvin who said if all local churches were corrupt (He prob meant 'Catholic') then He suggested private / family worship.
      The Scrooby Manor congregation in early 1600s led by Pastor John Robinson gave off the Pilgrim Separatists that by 1620 emigrated to our Eastern Shores & planted the Colonies, the seed = USA.
      So look what the LORD can do !
      An over-reliance on Institutional church models is rampant today.
      The tragic reality is that they as often as not, serve to make a congregation of timid non-fruitful sheep rather than loving, bold mature Disciples.
      If we humbly ask Christ to call us & our wives & children to Him & lead us, the latter outcome is far likelier !
      I believe real training in the Faith & Discipline of Christ begins first in the Home, then in the wider church body.
      Oops sorry I've written a novel but your comment touched a nerve / reflects our reality too.

    This is not a command to gather together once a week for 90 minutes INSIDE a building and sit quietly as a spectator while some hirelings sings some songs, gives a sermon, Biblical or not, every week. Assembling together can be done daily. This Scripture is vague, the church has twisted it to fit the church staff's meaning, keeping the hirelings in a standard of living usually higher and better than half those sitting in seats for 90 minutes being spoon-fed or bottle-fed what one man (the CEO of the CORPORATION, a profit making business ) wants to twist Scripture to justify his sermon.

    Scripture teaches that the coming of the Lord is at the end of the age not the end of time, His coming is at the the end of the old covanent age not the Christian age, His coming is at the" time of the end", you have to link 2 Peter 3 to 1 peter 4:7 it would be the end of the mosaic age not the destruction of the physical cosmos also it would be the new heavens and new earth, and the kingdom and the age of messiah, Hebrews 9:28 teaches he comes the 2nd time to bring salvation for those who wait for him, not a future 3rd coming, the second coming happens at the fall of Jerusalem, Jeff's partial preterism doesn't make sence.

      Clearly, "this generation" refers to the generation that see the signs mentioned prior to the coming of the Lord, not necessarily the generation Jesus was speaking to at the time. This is what the context shows, and logic- as the resurrection obviously has not happened yet.

    • @andrebias3534

      Who is the "You" in Mathew 24? Clearly it's the disciples and whomever was on the mount or near the temple, then if it was a future generation that Jesus would be speaking about then he would have said "that generation" but he dint he said "this generation". Pay attention to audience relevance, the list of things that were to happen in Mathew 24 would accomplished before ' this generation " passes away not " that generation" sometime in the distant future.

    • @hellohurricane912
      @hellohurricane912 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrebias3534 You are ignoring the context. I just demonstrated that "this generation" is the generation that sees the signs of Christ's coming...i.e. the sun being darkened and the moon turned to blood.
      It's obvious that the resurrection and the Second Coming of Christ have not happened yet as Scripture nowhere records their occurrence and the orthodox church fathers make no mention of their occurrence either.
      My friend, you really just need to use some common sense here and stop getting hung up on one word like "this". It is so blatantly obvious that neither the resurrection nor Second Coming have happened yet that I can hardly believe we are actually having this conversation.

    @dand4485 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I know Pastor Durbin holds to a Preterist view and it sure seems that view has a number of problems associated with it. He uses Matthew 24 to say "This generation..." and true many of them did see a lot of what was written, but that doesn't invalidate a pre-trib view, as many if not most all O.T. prophecies had a dual fulfillment, specifically that to validate the prophecy was from God, there would be a short term fulfillment of the prophecy, but many also have a future fulfillment. Typing this, can't help but think about what God warned through out the O.T... God is clear to Israel walk in my statutes, i'll protect you, if not then is will ... God warns Israel a number of times finally say but if you don't beleive i will scatter you to the four corners of the earth. Along with this God say but in that last days God is clear that He will bring His people back into the land, even to the point the land would be barren but will cause the hills to flower once He brings His people back into the land...
    Just saying this would be a short overview of the O.T. and what God prophesied about Israel, if one holds to a preterits view can't see all of the scriptures were fulfilled in 70A.D.'s destruction of the temple.
    Next trouble point... Was the Holy Spirit taken out when the temple was destroyed in 70A.D.? Just saying God was clear about the tribulation will start only once the restrainer is taken out of the world and that from what we can read would be the Holy Spirit. But Christ was clear and said "i go away and it will be better for you for i will send the Holy Spirit, but rest assured I will never leave you nor forsake you..." Question is that and one of the main reasons i reject preterism if the restrainer is taken out, wouldn't that be leaving the Bride of Christ alone in the world? Or even a bigger problem God is clear He had not appointed us unto wrath... And clearly we see all men/people will suffer righteous plagues of God's wrath in the tribulation, as it says in
    Rev 6:14 The sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. 15 Then the kings of the earth and the great men and the commanders and the rich and the strong and every slave and free man hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains; 16 and they said to the mountains and to the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; 17 for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?"
    Just saying sure seems all the people will face God's wrath here... But absolutely clear here in:
    1 Thes 5:9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
    Sorry all those who believe and accept Preterism, don't see how some of the other related issues fit in to the rest of the story without contradicting a number of other passages...

    • @MansterBear

      God didn’t bring the Jews back to Israel, Satan did.
      Gods covenant with Israel was CONDITIONAL on the Jews being OBEDIENT (IF). They weren’t obedient, they rejected the prophets that God sent them, they rejected and killed Jesus. Compare Exodus 19:5-7 and 1 Peter 2:9-10.
      Exodus 19:5-7 (KJV)
      5 Now therefore, IF ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, THEN ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
      6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
      7 And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the Lord commanded him.
      Exodus 24:7-8
      7 And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the Lord hath said will we do, and be obedient.
      8 And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the Lord hath made with you concerning all these words.
      1 Peter 2:9-10
      9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;
      10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
      Jerusalem is Babylon - Babylon killed the PROPHETS, SAINTS & Jesus Christ. Carefully read these scriptures from the KJV.

      18 And in her (Babylon) was found the blood of PROPHETS, and of SAINTS, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

      Todd White could not do what he does if God was not with him. I seek the Holy Spirit first before all things. To avoid Todd White would be to avoid the anointing of God on his life. The most important thing is to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and win souls for Christ. When the Pharisees rejected Jesus Christ he told them if you don't believe me then believe the works that I do.
      John 10:31-39
      31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?”
      33 The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.”
      34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods” ’? 35 If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), 36 do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37 If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.” 39 Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.

      22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebub,” and, “By the ruler of the demons He casts out demons.”
      23 So He called them to Himself and said to them in parables: “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself, and is divided, he cannot stand, but has an end. 27 No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. The Bible this guy reads from is so changed from the word it isn't funny. It's no wonder he teaches that we are all going to fly away. God knew back in the day that men would be pushing a narrative of flying away. Ezekiel chp. 13 vrs. 20 "Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against your pillows, wherewith ye there hunt the souls to make them fly, and I will tear them from your arms, and will let the souls go, even the souls that ye hunt to make them fly." I pray that people study the word for themselves and stop only getting the word of God from a man. Man can be a good source to bounce ideas off of, but most men that supposedly teach the word today don't actually get around to teaching any truth.
