- Joshua Bell and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra bring a world premiere to the stage under the baton of Chief Conductor Alan Gilbert: "The Elements - Suite for Orchestra and Violin" which Bell commissioned the composers, Jake Heggie, Jennifer Higdon, Edgar Meyer, Jessie Montgomery and Kevin Puts. The five pieces are dedicated to earth, water, fire, air and ether. These five elements form the basis of the Greek philosophy of Aristotle as well as traditional Chinese philosophy and medicine.

Saw this in Chicago on Saturday. Moving beyond words. I cried multiple times because the beauty of it all was just so overwhelming. These recordings are awesome, but seeing it live took it to another level. If you have the chance to see it, take it!!

I saw Earth played last night by Joshua Bell at the SF Symphony and I was moved to tears. My god how beautiful! This has quickly become my favorite classical music piece of all time simply because from the very beginning it sprung a well of emotion in me that was quite unexpected. Wow - so hypnotic, aching, hopeful, beautiful, soulful and timeless!
I just returned from Davies and immediately sat down to find this piece!

Wunderschöne Uraufführung dieser einzigartig konstruierten doch fein komponierten Suite mit seidigem doch gut phrasiertem Ton der genialen Solovioline sowie gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen der anderen Instrumente. Der intelligente und ebenso geniale US-amerikanische Chefdirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete deutsche Orchester im veränderlichen Tempo und mit künstlerisch kontrollierter Dynamik. Faszinierend vom Anfang bis zum Ende!

Magnificent performance! Thank you so much for posting this! Bell's performance with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra last night, conducted by Peter Oundjian for the West Coast premiere, drew an immediate and prolonged standing ovation that was richly deserved. Looking for something to inspire greater climate change / environmental activism? Look no further than Kevin Puts' "Earth." The audience's response to this evocation of Earth's most sublime beauty (at 08:00) was palpable. As the composer of this movement wrote, "Beyond the fundamental sense of stability and endurance the element Earth suggested to me, I hope the music also conveys a more spiritual reverence for the planet Earth itself and, in some minute way, might inspire its protection."
