Lovely cleaners - I have a 502 and a co op exclusive 520 from 1987 - they are good grooming machines and must have been great value for money back in the day
This was my family's vacuum cleaner in the 1970s & 80s and I know it very well. The original carboard box that the hose and tools came in could be turned into a storage box for the tools. The box was cut in half around the middle then folded together to make two compartments to store the hose, extension pole and attachments. We put a couple of strong elastic bands around the bottom to keep the two halves of the box together. A hole was cut at the top in the centre of the cardboard box to make a carrying handle.
Some strange coincidences here Roger. Firstly I’m from Yeovil originally. Secondly back in the 80’s when I was living at home with my parents in Yeovil a neighbour of my parents had a 502. I replaced the motor in that machine at the time. I know that the lady that owned the 502 moved into a care home some months ago. So there’s a possible, albeit slim chance that this is the same 502. The video brings back many memories.
I grew up with these too - we’re about the same age I guess. We had the 502 and it blew up so my dad went and bought my mum (when vacuums were considered a present for ‘the wife’) a new 502S which in hindsight it was probably just the suppressor and didn’t need replacing - the 502 went in the bin and I’m sure it wasn’t even very old. Anyway, fast forward 30 odd years and I found one on EBay back in 2008 - absolutely mint 502 which I got for £25! I love it! These were great cleaners - I since got 2 504, a 560 and a 502S. These were well made and stylish - very durable (suppressors aside). I’d be happy if they still made them!
My mums friend Vera has one of these and in the early 80s she wanted a new brush strip on it as it had worn, so I took the beater off as it was like the brush strip and slid out and I made it 2 brush strip vacuum, but to be honest I couldn’t really notice a difference, I’ve done it a few times over the years with various models of this style of lux
We didnt see the ratings plate on that - I guess you forgot to show it due to it being hidden on the back of the motor housing, but suspect this is from the mid 70s, as its an early design, with the stripe only going halfway down the bag housing and it having a shiny metal bag latch. Later 502 models became the 502S and they had the longer stripe down the front of the bag housing, and were from the late 70s early 80s, before the 550 came out, in the early 80s.
Very nice classic design and colour, shame no neon light in the switch. They should re-release a retro range of vacuum cleaners like this with modern tech inside they would be a huge hit. As always, great video.
Oddly, the light in the switch of the 504 glows when it's off and goes off when it's turned on! I guess it makes sense given you should know when the machine is on but I always found it strange for some reason - maybe it was a solve for all those poor people that walked all of the 12 feet of the cable and found it wasn't turned on at the switch! life was hard back then ;P
This was the first vacuum i bought when i got engaged and was buying bits for our new home. We stored all the stuff we bought at my mother in laws in her back room and i was so annoyed to find that she had used my lovely new cleaner in her house when her one had broken! She had 2 large German shepherd dogs and the bag was full of dog hair! She didn't even tell me she had used it.
Aww the missing jigsaw piece... Maybe part of a 1000 piece Jigsaw... No idea it was missing after days and days of putting the jigsaw together... Looking everywhere for hours for the missing piece... to make things worse.... The hoover is on the blink... It isn't picking anything up!
Yes, I hadn’t noticed the front suction channels until I was editing the video. I think this must have been a later version than my Mum had and possibly the internal hose was original and a replacement for the type Electrolux used to fit.
@@ibaisaic I never knew they did the base plate in that style. I don't think I've ever seen them even as a replacement part which is a shame as I'd like to try! Look forward to any test you do, would be good to see if it is more effective than one with a flat plate. I think the hose is an original replacement as you say - I don't know what my mum used to do to hers but it did seem to go through parts regularly and I recall this being one of them - I prefer the originals aesthetically speaking but I'm a bit pedantic about those little details :)
How on earth can they have used that totally blocked? My Aunt did the same with a 550 - it was blocked all the way up the bag box, down the body and into the floor - it was simply because she had never changed the bag in about 3 years and grumbled about it endlessly...
@@ghostlylurker8353 No idea! at least it's a story the whole family still recount 30 years later - I was the one who sorted it for her and when I opened the lid, to find a compacted dust/fluff snake all the way through the machine it was a bit perplexing "when did you last empty it?" - "empty it? I don't think I ever have?" .... It's a credit to the 550 that it continued to suck stuff up right down to the floor head!

It has been cleaned up awaiting a final polish after which I will make a new demo video featuring the full set of cleaning tools that I managed to get.
ibaisaic amazing that was the very first vacuum cleaner my parents owned and I loved it. We also had the Electrolux 505 and also the 625 (I think) the white one with onboard tools prior to the contour series. I much prefer the old Vacuums to today’s modern ones.

Nostalgia my mum had a 502 when I was a toddler. I remember the handle on my mums going same colour .
I remember my parents having this vacuum in cream in the 1990's!!
It was probably the later 502S version. That was cream with a brown trim.
Very nice 502. Regarding the trim, the earlier one has the shirt trim and the later version has the trim that runs the full length of the bag housing.

The base plate also has the front suction channels which I think were a later addition - the chrome plates on all of mine are flat at the front.
